by Dr. Andrei Ternauciuc, Dr. Diana Andone
Distance education and online learning history at the Politehnica University of Timisoara was initiated more than two decades ago, with a vision on opening up traditional Romanian higher education. And more than half of this time was invested in Moodle's challenging orbit and its development. Launching the Virtual Campus for Digital Students - ViCaDiS platform in 2007, as a result of our research, continuing with the highly successful Virtual Campus of the Politehnica University of Timisoara (CVUPT) platform, and getting to our latest Moodle-based endeavour - the Open Virtual Mobility Learning Hub, we grew alongside Moodle's ever-helpful community. Thanks to its open status, we were able to mould the world's leading learning environment into the tool most of our students know and (mostly) love. The road has not always been easy, but thanks to the well-meaning people behind the plugins and the forum posts, we were able to accomplish our learning process goals of honing a complex and complete instrument for online learning. We also learned to fend for ourselves by adapting or even designing from the ground up the functionalities we greatly required, always for the benefit of our students. Our actions have always been towards introducing, supporting and advocating the open education principles in our work, research and development. In the last months, due to the pandemic time and the complete move to online education, we performed a major scalability of our learning environments into what it is now the Politehnica University of Timisoara Digital Eco-system. This scalability and increase will be presented at the Global MoodleMoot 2020. https://moodle.com/events/global-online/

In order to better integrate OERs and MOOCs in traditional higher education on a large scale and maybe to use MOOCs as a method to offer new training opportunities to the business world, universities need to adopt clear policies on the accreditation of MOOCs and OERs. The three models proposed for the integration of MOOCs and OERs need to be included in university policies. The lessons learned until now show that a strategic approach, involving policies and quality validation are important but that clear guidelines and support also need to be given to professors and students, for universities to be more influential in the digital world.
Today's students will learn independently and digitally throughout their lives. They will therefore need to develop a robust set of Open Life Long Learning Student skills. When they graduate, they will need to be ready to identify, access, learn, analyse, apply and practice new knowledge using different media, information channels, and communication tools to enhance their skills and develop their careers. But does traditional higher education prepare them for this? Do we use models, methods and tools for learning and knowledge acquisition that will develop their skills as creative, independent, confident learners? Are they equipped for learning in a classroom-less society throughout their lives?
Presentation held at the webinar "Online Teaching Reshape Education during and after COVID-19", jointly held by UNESCO-ICHEI, UNESCO IITE, INRULED, Southern University of Science and Technology, and Tsinghua University China. There were launched six guidelines for teachers, students, parents and communities, principals and educational administrators, learning technologies and platforms, and personal data security.
Also the webinar bring together educational actors worldwide to talk about their experiences and lessons learned regarding online teaching during COVID-19 and share their views on how these will reshape education.
OERs and MOOCs – the Romanian experience Diana Andone
OERs and MOOCs – the Romanian experience paper, authors Radu Vasiu, Diana Andone, presented at International Conference on Web & Open Access to Learning, 24-27 November 2014, Dubai, UEA.
Using Open Educational Resources (OER) provides opportunities for collaboration both in the classroom and beyond. Started in 2008 and gathering momentum over the past two years, now an online phenomenon, MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses) reunite different perspectives over a globalized online learning. The paper analyses the use of OER and MOOCs in different study cases in Romanian universities. Several OER initiatives resulted from the over 1000 academia involved in the DidaTec lifelong learning and training for higher education teachers in the technical sciences and engineering field as a training course for university professors in 12 universities, within the aim of improving the use of ICT in higher education. Four universities from Romania started a Romanian MOOC environment, the UniCampus, which provides free access to valuable education in Romanian language, presented by well-known professors. The evaluation and quality assurance challenges of the Unicampus are mainly due to the restrictive educational setting in Romania. Two study cases on blending MOOCs in traditional higher education courses at undergraduate and Master level are also analysed from the impact on students’ motivation. Integrating MOOCs in blended learning empower students with new abilities and requires a new and open teacher model.

A Tool for Determining an Optimal Model of Student Engagement in Wikis for Le...Cristina Felea
Paper presented at the 10th eLearning and Software for Education Conference - eLSE 2014, Bucharest 24-25 April
The problem of learners’ engagement is receiving renewed attention against the background of the transition from traditional to technology enhanced learning environments and the ensuing shift from the transmission to the (co)construction of knowledge model in teaching/learning.
Recent studies on the use of social media for academic purposes have also revealed transformations in student and teacher roles and behavior. This study is part of an ongoing research on various pedagogical aspects related to early adoption of Web 2.0 tools (wikis) in a blended language learning program of English for Academic Purposes attended by undergraduate students in social sciences in a Romanian university.
The authors’ prior research on student behavior suggested low participation levels during the semester and high activity under the pressure of finals. Our current objective is to continue the research in an attempt to provide a more accurate learner profile that could help teachers improve the learning environment to further activate their students.
We applied the ROC analysis, a cost/benefit analysis of diagnostic decision making, in order to diagnose the features of students who would use successfully a Web 2.0 tool for learning. The study aims to exemplify how ROC analysis can be used to offer a classification of students with positive/negative inclinations to adopt a Web 2.0 tool by eliminating the false positives, respectively the false negatives.
Consequently, it may become a tool to select a possible optimal model to be considered in the process of needs analysis and of taking important decisions regarding teaching methods, course contents and design.

Keynote from Manuel Castro, Ph.D., Professor, UNED (Spain) - INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON PEDAGOGICAL INNOVATION July 20, 21 and 22 2022, in Sousse - Tunisia / https://ciip.ieee.tn/
E-learning, often known as "online learning," "virtual learning," "remote learning," and other similar terms, is an alternative to traditional classroom instruction. "Distance education," "digital learning," or "mobile learning." E-learning involves using several distinct technologies, including the web, open broadcast, loop, cable, microwave, broadband lines, fibre optics, satellite, wireless communications equipment, audio/video conferencing, and others, for one-way or two-way transmission. To improve educational knowledge, e-learning makes use of interactive technology and communication infrastructure. It has the ability to change how we typically teach and learn across the board. It will improve standards and increase long-term learning involvement. Although it cannot completely replace teachers and lecturers, it will improve the quality and scope of their instruction and reduce the time spent on administration. Each learner will be changed to reach his or her full potential, and it will make it easier to give an academic force the freedom to change. It makes a very ambitious educational system for an emerging learning society feasible. As demand grows, there is a need to standardise the E-learning system and to use new technologies to raise the standard of the current system. Despite the fact that many corporations and academic institutions have previously adopted various standards, there are still certain issues with these standards' benefits and drawbacks that must be addressed by incorporating new technical standards into the current norms to improve their usability and systematicity

Faculty, Visuals, and Values: Shaping a Learning Technology EcosystemMichael Greene
Given at EDUCUASE ELI16
In 2012, Duke University's Center for Instructional Technology (CIT) began experimenting with MOOCs with an interest in both open education and campus impact. Today, faculty are increasingly interested in content mashups and technology integrations that go far beyond the average course site. Presenters share how CIT evaluates technology tools and platforms to meet faculty needs, maps the Duke learning technology ecosystem, and tests new technologies for fit. In this presentation I discuss the methods and applications used, the results of Canvas and Open edX testing (summer 2015) and an Open edX pilot (spring 2016), and the values shaping the ecosystem moving forward.
OUTCOMES:
-Compare learning ecosystems, needs, and aspirations among session participants
-Identify strategies for visualizing a learning ecosystem
-Assess methods and applications for evaluating technology platforms

Captured Alive: Generating visually rich evidence to support learning (throug...Vanguard Visions
Traditionally evidence in education has been captured through text and writing. This has limited how evidence could be represented, especially when demonstrating practical skills and applied knowledge.
Eportfolios and mobile devices are being used to visually capture evidence within the Australian vocational education and training (VET) sector to demonstrate people’s exiting skills when entering a course or while remaining in the workplace.
Capturing evidence through video, audio and digital images is allowing the better representation of a person’s skills and ability, thus providing cost saving to learners, employers and training providers and enabling people who are less text-literate to gain a qualification.
This evidence collection method is also allowing individuals to develop their digital literacy skills by being supported to effectively represent themselves online. This evidence is also being re-used and re-purposed by learners to gain employment or a promotion; entry into higher qualifications and/or gain credit/articulation; as well as applying for grants or entering exhibitions.

Creating Virtual Reality in a Business and Technology Educational Context Diana Andone
Creating Virtual Reality in a Business and Technology Educational Context, presentation by Diana Andone and Mark Frydenberg, at The 4th International AR and VR Conference, 21 - 22 June 2018, Manchester, UK.
Virtual reality applications have enabled students to experience the world through visually immersive experiences in business and educational contexts. This paper shares the results of a collaborative project (TalkTech) in which students from universities in the United States and Romania work together to study uses for virtual reality in a business context, and then create their own VR scenes for a selected business or industry. In doing so, students follow a learning scenario in which they explore the capabilities of virtual reality in both business and technology educational contexts.

Ehnacing Creativity and Opeining Up Learning Through Virtual MobilitiesDiana Andone
Paper presented at EDEN 2015 International Conference in Budapest 14-17 June 2016
The concept of virtual mobility can be defined as a set of ICT supported activities that realise or facilitate international, collaborative experiences in a context of teaching and/or learning it. Since 2008, the authors have offered TalkTech, an online collaboration enabling students from their universities to research technology trends, share their experiences, and create multimedia objects to present their findings (Frydenberg & Andone, 2010). As members of international teams, they must produce a viable digital media product created working with international partners located on another continent. Throughout the six-week project they must select appropriate digital tools to support with their communication and collaboration efforts, manage time zones and technologies, and track their progress. The purpose of this collaborative project is to create a controlled work environment which models the global enterprise, where the use of web-based collaboration and communication tools are commonplace. The analysis in this paper will show how this project supports Wheeler's characteristics of digital literacy (Wheeler, 2012).

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

This is a presentation by Dada Robert in a Your Skill Boost masterclass organised by the Excellence Foundation for South Sudan (EFSS) on Saturday, the 25th and Sunday, the 26th of May 2024.
He discussed the concept of quality improvement, emphasizing its applicability to various aspects of life, including personal, project, and program improvements. He defined quality as doing the right thing at the right time in the right way to achieve the best possible results and discussed the concept of the "gap" between what we know and what we do, and how this gap represents the areas we need to improve. He explained the scientific approach to quality improvement, which involves systematic performance analysis, testing and learning, and implementing change ideas. He also highlighted the importance of client focus and a team approach to quality improvement.
