The problem of learners’ engagement is receiving renewed attention against the background of the transition from traditional to technology enhanced learning environments and the ensuing shift from the transmission to the (co)construction of knowledge model in teaching/learning.
Recent studies on the use of social media for academic purposes have also revealed transformations in student and teacher roles and behavior. This study is part of an ongoing research on various pedagogical aspects related to early adoption of Web 2.0 tools (wikis) in a blended language learning program of English for Academic Purposes attended by undergraduate students in social sciences in a Romanian university.
The authors’ prior research on student behavior suggested low participation levels during the semester and high activity under the pressure of finals. Our current objective is to continue the research in an attempt to provide a more accurate learner profile that could help teachers improve the learning environment to further activate their students.
We applied the ROC analysis, a cost/benefit analysis of diagnostic decision making, in order to diagnose the features of students who would use successfully a Web 2.0 tool for learning. The study aims to exemplify how ROC analysis can be used to offer a classification of students with positive/negative inclinations to adopt a Web 2.0 tool by eliminating the false positives,respectively the false negatives.
Consequently, it may become a tool to select a possible optimal model to be considered in the process of needs analysis and of taking important decisions regarding teaching methods, course contents and design.

In order to better integrate OERs and MOOCs in traditional higher education on a large scale and maybe to use MOOCs as a method to offer new training opportunities to the business world, universities need to adopt clear policies on the accreditation of MOOCs and OERs. The three models proposed for the integration of MOOCs and OERs need to be included in university policies. The lessons learned until now show that a strategic approach, involving policies and quality validation are important but that clear guidelines and support also need to be given to professors and students, for universities to be more influential in the digital world.
Today's students will learn independently and digitally throughout their lives. They will therefore need to develop a robust set of Open Life Long Learning Student skills. When they graduate, they will need to be ready to identify, access, learn, analyse, apply and practice new knowledge using different media, information channels, and communication tools to enhance their skills and develop their careers. But does traditional higher education prepare them for this? Do we use models, methods and tools for learning and knowledge acquisition that will develop their skills as creative, independent, confident learners? Are they equipped for learning in a classroom-less society throughout their lives?

DIGITAL-S aims to experiment and develop the effective use of ICTs for trainers willing to keep pace with digital technology in the field of training. The project will particularly focus on distance education learning for adult learners from rural areas having urgent specific needs to enhance their digital skills as an essential European key skill.

Media education is an intercurricular subject in Austrian schools, however, it is not a part of teacher’s formal education. Teachers with good digital competencies are much more willing to discuss online safety issues with their students in classes. Therefore, enhancing these skills among teachers will ultimately help to bring these topics into mainstream education. A handful of powerful e-learning tools have been introduced to help teachers familiarise with online safety basics and integrate this topic into their classes.

The recruitment and retention of students in early computer programming classes has been the focus of many Computer Science and Informatics programs. This paper describes an initiative underway at Indiana University South Bend to improve the retention rate in computer science and informatics. The approach described in this work is inspired by the SCALE-UP project, and describes the design and implementation of an instructor-guided, active learning environment which allows students to gradually acquire the necessary critical thinking, problem solving, and programming skills required for success in computer science and informatics.

This paper introduces the concepts of Hypermedia and Hypertext systems as tools for managing information in the field of architecture and enhancing the landscape of education. An application developed by the author is used to illustrate the use of Hypertext programs in architectural education. Paradox, a powerful relational database program, is used to develop an application illustrating the works and philosophies of twentieth century masters of architecture. The paper recommends the development of similar applications to be available for students through computer networks, as tools for managing growing amounts of information and enhancing the landscape of learning.

Drawing on our experience of supporting a nationwide Open Educational Resources programme (the UKOER programme), this presentation will consider the diverse range of approaches to describing OERs that have emerged across the programme and their impact on resource sharing, workflows, and an aggregate view of the resources.
Due to the diverse nature of the projects in the programme, ranging from individual educators to discipline-based consortia and institutions, it was apparent that no one technical or descriptive solution would fit all. Consequently projects were mandated to supply only a limited amount of descriptive information (programme tag, author, title, date, url, file format, file size, rights) with some additional information suggested (language, subject classifications, keywords, tags, comments, description). Projects were free to choose how this information should be encoded (if at all), stored, and shared.
In response, the projects have taken many different approaches to the description and management of resources. These range from using traditional highly structured and detailed metadata standards to approaches using whatever descriptions are supported by particular web2.0 applications. This experimental approach to resource description offers the wider OER community an opportunity to examine and assess the implications of different strategies for resource description and management
This paper illustrates a number of examples of projects’ approaches to description, noting the workflows and effort involved. We will consider the relationship of the choice of tool (repository, web2.0 application, VLE) to the choice of standards; and the relationship between local requirements and those of the wider community.
We will consider the impact of those choices on the dissemination and discoverability of resources. For example, the implications of resource description choices for discovery services which draw on multiple sources of OERs.

Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
