Addition and Subtraction
of Polynomial Functions
Example 1. (2x2 – 3x + 1) + (3x – 4).
(2x2 – 3x + 1)
+ ( 3x – 4)
2x2 - 3
(2x2 – 3x + 1) + (3x – 4)
= 2x2 - 3
Example 2. (x5 – 3x4 + 4x – 1) – ( 2x5 – 2x + 2).
(x5 – 3x4 + 4x – 1)
+( -2x5 + 2x - 2)
-x5 – 3x4 + 6x – 3
x5 – 3x4 + 4x – 1) – ( 2x5 – 2x + 2)
= -x5 – 3x4 + 6x – 3
Let’s remember:
• The sum of two functions f and g is defined by (f + g (x)
= f(x) + g(x).
• To add polynomial functions, follow these steps:
1. Align like terms.
2. Combine like terms.
• To subtract two polynomial functions f and g, follow these
steps:
1. Align like terms of the given functions.
2. Change the minus sign to plus sign then
simultaneously get the additive inverse of each term of g(x).
3. Combine like terms.
Let’s Apply
Let f(x) = 2x3 – 3x + 4 and g(x) = 5x3 + 4x2 – 3x – 7.
Find the following:
1. f(x) + g(x)
2. f(x) – g(x)
Let f(x) = 2x3 – 3x + 4 and g(x) = 5x3 + 4x2 – 3x – 7.
1.f(x) + g(x)
2x3 – 3x + 4
+ (5x3 + 4x2 – 3x – 7)
7x3 + 4x2 – 6x – 3
2. f(x) – g(x)
2x3 – 3x + 4
+ (-5x3 - 4x2 + 3x + 7)
-3x3 - 4x2 + 11
