A chilled beam is a type of convection heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system designed to heat or cool large buildings.It is now regarded as the most space efficient and environmental friendly method of heating and cooling a building.The primary advantage of the chilled beam system is its lower operating cost.Chilled beams reduce energy consumption.It is now regarded as the most space efficient and environmental friendly method of heating and cooling a building.It improves the comfort levels by cutting out the intrusive noise and aesthetic problems.It provides good energy efficiency and reduction in carbon dioxide emission. Since they do not require high forced air flows, chilled beam systems also require reduced air distribution duct network.

Some passive types rely solely on convection whilst there is a "Radiant"/convective passive type which cools through a combination of radiant exchange (40%) and convection (60%) which can provide higher thermal comfort levels, while the active type (also called an "induction diffuser") uses ducts to push ("induce") air toward the unit (increasing its heating and cooling capacity).

The chilled ceiling uses water flowing through pipes like a chilled beam does; however, the pipes in a chilled ceiling lie behind metal ceiling plates, and the heated and cooled plates are the cause of convection and not the pipe unit itself. Chilled beams are about 85 percent more effective at convection than chilled ceilings.

The segmentation of data centers into alternating hot and cold aisles is an established best practice. A number of manufacturers are taking this premise of airflow separation a step further by marketing "containment" solutions. By containing the hot or cold aisle, the air paths have little chance to mix, presenting data center operators with both reliability and efficiency gains.

Maximizing the Efficiency of Condensing Boilers - Cx AssociatesCx Associates
This presentation focuses on maximizing the efficiency of condensing boilers in heating hot water applications. Specifically, the presentation describes how to determine the appropriate control setpoints for outdoor air temperature reset of hot water supply temperature and how to maximize the benefits of a condensing boiler. We show how default factory control parameters can affect condensing boiler efficiency, and present straightforward strategies for obtaining and implementing the optimum operational settings for condensing boilers. The result is a condensing boiler system that meets design load and part loads with improved combustion efficiency at little to no first cost.

A dehumidifier is a bit like a vacuum cleaner: it sucks in air from your room at one end, takes the moisture out of it, and then blows it back out into the room again. The moisture drips through into a collection tank that you have to empty, from time to time. Dehumidifiers work in one of two ways—by refrigeration (cooling air to remove moisture using similar technology to a refrigerator) or by absorption/adsorption (where moisture is absorbed into or adsorbed onto a drying material and then removed). The refrigeration method is far more appealing since its functioning can be controlled far more easily and effectively, thereafter it can be used as an Air conditioner if needed. In this project, we are aiming to develop a dehumidifier that is conducive to the local weather and is cheap and effective simultaneously.
When developing data center energy-use estimations, engineers must account for all sources of energy use in the facility. Most energy consumption is obvious: computers, cooling plant and related equipment, lighting, and other miscellaneous electrical loads. Designing efficient and effective data centers is a top priority for consulting engineers. Cooling is a large portion of data center energy use, second only to the IT load. Although there are several options to help maximize HVAC efficiency and minimize energy consumption, data centers come in many shapes, sizes, and configurations. By developing a deep understanding of their client’s data center HVAC requirements, consulting engineers can help maintain the necessary availability level of mission critical applications while reducing energy consumption.

Water-cooled chiller systems have typically been designed around entering condenser water temperatures of 85°F with a Optimization of Water - Cooled Chiller – Cooling Tower Combinations The warm water leaving the chilled water coils is pumped to the evaporator of the chiller, where the unwanted heat from the building is transferred by the latent heat of vaporization of the refrigerant. The compressor of the chiller then compresses the refrigerant to a higher pressure, adding the heat of compression in the process. The high pressure refrigerant then moves to the economical condenser water flow of 3.0 USGPM/ton and a 10°F denser, where the unwanted heat is rerange. In recent years, there has been considerable debate on the merits of designing around lower condenser water flow rates with a higher range in order to improve system lifecycle costs. However, two other parameters must also be considered in any analysis - approach and design wet bulb. The question to be answered is: What nominal condenser water flow rate and approach is best from a first cost standpoint as well as from a full load energy standpoint at any given wet bulb.

A bench-top air-to-water heat pump experimental apparatus was designed, developed, and constructed for instructional and demonstrative purposes. This air-to-water heat pump experimental apparatus is capable of demonstrating thermodynamics and heat transfer concepts and principles. This heat pump experimental setup was designed around the vapor compression refrigeration cycle. This experimental apparatus has an intuitive user interface, reliable, safe for student use, and portable. The interface is capable of allowing data acquisition by a computer. A PC-based control system which consists of LabVIEW and data acquisition unit is employed to monitor and control this experimental laboratory apparatus. This paper provides details about the development of this unit and the integration of the electrical/electronic component and the control system.

Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems.
