One step at a time numbers are changing the world. Education, politics, transport: so many areas of of our lives have been enhanced through quantification. One stat, one infographic at a time, society has become acclimatised to talking about the world through the lens of numbers, data and patterns. Our contemporary view of the world is now rooted in quantification.
So itâs no surprise really that the next frontier to be enhanced by âquantificationâ should be our own personal lives. Our health, our finances, our habits. The Quantified Selfâs time has come. Venture funding for Quantified Self startups has increased 165% in the last year . There are now over 500 different tools listed on the hub site for the Quantified Self movement.
So could it be that personal data is the secret weapon to help us rise through this, Maslowâs hierarchy of needs? Could it be that self-quantification will evolve us to the pinnacle - of self-actualisation?
Not yet. When you look at the majority of Self Tracking tools out there - tools to track my sleep, tools to track my movement, tools to track what i eat, they are still firmly rooted at the bottom of the pyramid. Currently weâre not rising up the hierarchy of needs so much as getting really good at the basics.
Actualisation has become a the hot topic on the West Coast and our greatest innovators are turning their attention to the question of how technology can improve our overall human condition. Using technology to help us find focus and mindfulness in an increasingly stressed out world. Using technology to inspire awareness and wisdom - 2.0.
The underlying principle is that quantification acts as a mirror, forcing us to stop and to look - at both ourselves and our actions - to notice patterns, problems and habits we can fix.
[Examples of the Hierarchy of the Quantified Self]
Knowledge - rational awareness of what weâre doing - isnât enough to change our behaviours. The majority of our behaviours are automatic, emotional, irrational - driven by a very different part of the brain to the one that processes data.
To help us evolve as people, the quantified self must be able to change behaviour too. And simply looking retrospectively at our data will never be enough to impact that behaviour. Bad habits are too ingrained and automatic for that.
----
Much of our discourse on self-analysis is still rooted in the ideas, language and codes of psychology laid out by people like Freud a century ago. It is a field still heavily weighted towards using words and metaphors. Language over data. Itâs probably time we brought a little more quantification, a little bit more science into the way we think about how we think and feel.
But any form of quantification should be counterbalanced by qualification. Because the real value often doesnât come from the data at all, but from the process of doing, documenting and then reflecting on those experiences through documentation.

It also mentions a meeting between the Armenian Patriarch and Catholicos related to the 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide and a statement by the leader of Cyprus regarding the situation in Nagorno-Karabakh.
Irlanda has elected a new president. Mary McAleese, who has served as president of Ireland for 14 years, has reached her term limit. The new president elected is Michael D. Higgins, who received over 50% of the votes in the first round of voting. Higgins was a professor, poet and politician and aims to be a neutral president for all the people of Ireland. The election was held on October 28, 2011.
Wartan Hsganyan, an expert on Armenian history, was interviewed about the recent protests in Armenia. He said that the protests indicate that Armenian society wants democratic reforms and a reduction in corruption. However, he warned that lasting change will be difficult and that the government may try to delay reforms to maintain the status quo. Overall, he said that the protests show that Armenians want a more just and transparent system of government.
This document provides a 3 paragraph summary of Armenian politician and writer Hovhannes Semyon's life and works:
Hovhannes Semyon was born in 1920 in Marseille, France to Armenian parents from Saloniki. He published his first collection of short stories in 1934 called "Monpa-nas" and his first novel in 1938 called "Arizi zartar". During World War II, he fought in the French resistance from 1944. After the war, he wrote several novels and short story collections including "Haigagan harsanik" and "Tsalovm". He also traveled to Japan and wrote about his experiences there.
In the second paragraph, details are

The United States and several Western nations agreed to ease some sanctions on Iran in exchange for limits on Iran's nuclear program. However, some countries like Israel and Saudi Arabia criticized the deal, saying it does not sufficiently restrict Iran's ability to develop nuclear weapons. Supporters say the agreement provides increased transparency and oversight of Iran's nuclear activities.
Vladimir Putin criticized the European Union's recognition of Kosovo's independence. He said such unilateral decisions could undermine international law and encourage other separatist movements. Putin expressed support for Serbia and its territorial integrity. The article also mentions the Eurovision Young Musicians competition to be held in Armenia in May 2012, which will include participants from 16 countries.
Maksa3in Miov;yan met with leaders from Armenia and Russia to discuss further cooperation between the two countries. The meeting took place in Moscow on November 3rd and addressed economic partnerships and security issues. They also discussed participation in Eurasian economic and security organizations. Earlier in Minsk, Miov;yan met with leaders from other post-Soviet states to discuss similar issues of cooperation.

The mystery...
Contâd from page 9
as an FBI translator.
âCriminal activities were being pro-
tected by claims of State Secrets, she
asserted. After Attorney General John
Ashcroft went all the way to the
Supreme Court to muzzle her under a
little-used doctrine of State Secrets,
she put up 21 photos, with no names.
One of them was Graham Fuller.â
A more revealing testimony by
Edmonds brings Mr. Fullerâs activities
and goals closer home to Caucasus
and consequently to Armenia: âYou
may remember one of these foreign
policy makers from my State Secrets
Privilege Gallery and my under oath
testimony in the Krikorian case. Here
is a quote from Graham A. Fuller, for-
mer Deputy Director of the CIAâs
National Council on Intelligence: âThe
policy of guiding the evolution of
Islam and of helping them against our
adversaries worked marvelously well
in Afghanistan against the Red Army.
The same doctrines can still be used to
destabilize what remains of Russian
power, and especially to counter the
Chinese influence in Central Asia.ââ
Mr. Fullerâs activities do not neces-
sarily reflect on Mr. Ruslan Tsarni, but
his place in the tangle of oil politics
and covert operations shed light on his
statements and his intent to drag the
Armenian name into this mess.
Also special attention must be
focused on Mr. Fullerâs âdoctrinalâ
ideas; while the West and specially the
US are fighting radical Islam, on the
other hand, that same weapon is
being used to âdestabilize what
remains of Russian power.â That cer-
tainly implicates Armenia, where one
of the last power bases of Russia is
located.
Therefore, it is no surprise that
Russia recently expelled most of the
foreign NGOs operating in its territory.
But they are still active in Armenia.
And in conjunction with the infiltra-
tion of religious sects they are intent
on undermining the foundations of the
country. None of the foreign organiza-
tions may entertain altogether altruis-
tic goals. They are all self-serving at
Armeniaâs expense.
Returning to Misha, he seems to be
the remotest person to be connected
with anything Armenian. But Uncle
Ruslan implicates him as the main cul-
prit in misguiding his âinnocentâ
nephews. Misha also seems to be a
shady character. Interviewed in his
Rhode Island home by New York
Review of Books, Misha turns out to
be Mikhail Allakhverdov, a person of
mixed Armenian and Ukrainian
parentage. Certainly he has inherited
his red beard from his Ukrainian. Then
why is his Armenian parentage thrust
into the news media and not the
Ukrainian? What is inconceivable with
Misha is that his family was persecut-
ed as Christians in Muslim Azerbaijan
and he seems to be among the 400,000
Armenians who were either murdered
or deported from Baku and Sumgait.
And then, one needs a psychologistâs
genius to understand that after arriv-
ing in a free country, he decided to
convert to the Islamic religion of his
persecutors. And as if that was not
enough, he acquired the power to radi-
calize actual, practicing Muslims.
All these incredible factors are
being used to cover his main purpose
and activity. Indeed, Walter Katz in
The Week suggests that Misha may
have been âan FBI informantâ who
started grooming Tamerlan for a sting
operation before giving up [premature-
ly].â As we can see, Misha is also a
character in the shadowy underworld,
pursuing a mischievous mission
turned sour. We can speculate on any
potential goal; perhaps Tamerlan was
being groomed to be involved in one
of the Mr. Fullerâs operations in the
Caucasus, and like Osama Bin Laden
before him, he turned against his han-
dlers. That is one of the possibilities.
As bombing victims and their fami-
lies suffer, no one has an interest in
digging further to find where the net-
work of conspiracy against Armenians
leads.
As Armenians we may air our anger
for being hurled into this tragedy, but
our resources are limited for damage
control. Therefore, beyond saving the
Armenian name, must we also worry
about Armenia caught in the complex
crossfire?
An unprecedented joint delegation
of AGBU Europe and EGAM â
European Grassroots Antiracist
Movement - comprised of 20 people
from 15 European countries, gathered
in Istanbul to commemorate the
Armenian Genocide of 1915. They
were invited by DurDe! (Say Stop to
Racism and Nationalism), a
Turkish organization that has been
commemorating the Armenian
Genocide for the past four years.
On April 24, symbolically at 19:15, up
to 2,000 Turks, Armenians and others
peacefully gathered at Istanbulâs cen-
trally-located Taksim Square in an
emotional moment of mourning, com-
memoration and solidarity. Earlier in
the day, they also gathered outside the
former Sultanahmed Prison (now a
museum), where Armenian intellectu-
als, professionals and others arrested
on April 24, 1915, were first jailed,
before being taken away and mur-
dered. A strong police presence kept
watch as a small gathering of protest-
ers shouted nationalist slogans nearby.
These events were organized by
DurDe! and IHD, a Turkish Human
Rights Association. The international
delegation, organized and led by
EGAM and AGBU Europe, included
leading European activists against
racism as well as young Armenian
leaders.
In the days leading up to the April
24 commemoration in Istanbul, delega-
tion members held numerous meet-
ings, a press conference and a confer-
ence at Sehir University to explain
their views and actions, as well as to
learn about developments in Turkey
relating to the recognition of the
Genocide and the treatment of minori-
ties.
On April 25, at the invitation of
AGBU-Armenia, a small group of dele-
gates travelled to Yerevan to com-
memorate the Armenian Genocide
together and share their experience in
Istanbul with the Armenian public.
The delegation members laid a wreath
at the Genocide Memorial in Yerevan
and met with Armenian Genocide
Museum-Institute Director Hayk
Demoyan. They also held a press con-
ference and met with representatives
of non-governmental organizations
involved in Armenia-Turkish relations
at the AGBU Armenia offices.
The Delegationâs activities in
Istanbul and Yerevan received ample
coverage in the Turkish, Armenian and
European press.

Ruslan Tsarni Apologizes to
Armenian Community
WATERTOWN â On April 30, Ruslan Tsarni, the
uncle of alleged terror suspects, Tamerlan and
Djokhar Tsarnaev, contacted the Mirror-Spectator
directly to issue an apology to the Armenian commu-
nity for his recent statements referencing Armenians
in his discussions of the Boston Marathon bombings.
âArmenia has a very strong culture, therefore, I
want to stress that his [Mishaâs] ethnicity has noth-
ing to do with it,â Tsarni said. âI wish I had never
said it.â Tsarni added, âI felt for you [Armenians] and
wish I had never done it.â
He once again apologized for connecting the Armenian community âto this
evil event.â
In previous media statements, Tsarni had discussed a recent convert to Islam
named âMishaâ â now reported as Mikhail Allakhverdova â stressing that he
was of âArmenian descentâ while implicating the man in the possible âbrain-
washingâ of Tamerlan Tsarnev with notions of violence against non-Muslims.
Tsarni spoke briefly on the matter via phone, but said he was unable to com-
ment further or answer additional questions. A reverse phone number search
traced and confirmed that the phone call came from a Maryland cell phone
issued to Tsarni.
