From our trip to the Norton Museum of Art one piece out of the allotted few struck me as odd and
interesting. The Sailor s Barracks by Giorgio De Chirico is a oil on canvas impressionist/metaphysical
work of art. The painting is composed of multiple small objects laid about somewhat carelessly on a
tilted plane in the foreground with a long piece of architecture in the background that stretches
towards the horizon.

there appears to be no decision without adverse secondary and tertiary effects. Since the Persian Gulf
War, US policy has been fully supportive of the Arabs and Turks while limiting official support for the
Kurds in Turkey, Iraq, and Syria. Nevertheless, unofficially, the US has fully supported the Kurds
militarily through the establishment of long term partnerships between military forces. While always a
point of contention with Turkey and the Government of Iraq (GOI), the recent increase in support for
Kurdish forces in Syria to oppose the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) brought the issue to
the forefront. The time for US policy to withhold support for the Kurds is past due to their critical role
in the campaign against ISIL. The US attempted to establish a coalition amongst the Turks and the

I was very excited when I saw that Core/ El Centro is looking for summer interns. They have made so

Theatre on 11th and Mitchell. In college, I choreographed, taught dance, and stage managed for the

like simplicity. The morals hidden in Intellect aren t simple per se, nevertheless we are reminded of
the riddles of our primary school days; we remember the catchy rhythm and traditional morals we
learned from these riddles. The rhythm and meter are also vital aspects of this poem s structure: each
line contains seven syllables and begins with a stressed syllable. This didactic rhythm jumps out of the
page at the reader, causing us to pay attention. The stressed and unstressed syllable pattern produces a
sing song effect; the poem beckons us to listen to the wise counsel of Emerson with a child like
openness and implores the reader to find the moral that Emerson is trying to get across. The imagery
of Intellect is challenging: the poem features a fountain, a wave, the shore, and wings all in just six
lines. This abstract imagery allows us to tap into our own intellect and it leaves room for the reader to
interpret its meaning. Let us contemplate the fountain first. A fountain is often used to symbolise the
source for something desirable: whether it be a drinking fountain, a fountain of youth, or the fountain
of life we come across in Christian doctrine. Often times we crave rules; or we might just crave

Extension activities were therefore directed towards increasing efficiency in crop production and
marketing. Regulations were made to set and enforce standards in export crop production.
The colonial government also established some agricultural development schemes to upgrade the
skills of farmers and to produce agricultural commodities. The Kware irrigation scheme was
established in 1926. It was situated 16miles or 25.74 kilometres north of Sokoto town. Its purposes
were to increase rice yields and provide experimental data on production under severe drought during
dry season and flooding during the rains. The scheme started with 1000 acres or 405 hectares
involving 800 farmers with farms situated along the river banks. The irrigation scheme employed the
shadoof which is an ancient Egyptian technique, also used by the Sudanese. The scheme did not attain
much of its objectives because (a) the irrigation scheme (shardoof) was inadequate on large farms; (b)
it is a slow technique of irrigation; (c) it was difficult to collect cost of services from users; (d) in
1943, 1945 and 1954, river Rima over flooded and washed away most of the rice crop; and (e) use of
manure was not popular among the farmers.
