Why The Giant Panda Is One Of The Most Misunderstood Animals
The Giant Panda is one of the most misunderstood animals on the planet. For many years, it was
believed to be a type of racoon, like the similarly named red panda. However, genetics testing and
observation have revealed that the panda is in fact, a bear. It has several adaptations that make it
unusual. First is the fact that it has six digits on the front paws, giving it an opposable thumb ideal for
holding onto the stalks of bamboo which it consumes in great amounts. The genitalia of the male are
rear pointing and small which is also decidedly bearish, and much more like those of the red panda. It
has only been since 1995 that the Panda has been officially considered a bear.
Typical pandas have a large head, and distinct white and black ... Show more content on

Males grow to 190 275 pounds and 64 76 inches in length, with females being slightly smaller and
lighter at 155 220 pounds. They reach sexual maturity between ages 4 1/2 to 6 1/2 years and mate
once during the spring months of March, April, and May. The females are in estrus for anywhere from
1 to 3 weeks, but are only really receptive for a few days of that time. During August and September,
pregnant females give birth to anywhere from one to three cubs, with one being the more common.
The cubs are weaned at nine months, but often stay with their mothers for more than two years.
Like most bears, pandas are solitary animals. Females with cubs being the only exception. They mark
their territories by scratching trees and by rubbing a musky anogenital gland against rocks and trees.
Additionally, they communicate with different vocalizations. Scientists have identified 11 distinct
calls, but cannot identify the exact function of all of them.
Pandas are quite vegetarian, making bamboo 99% of their diet. Adults can eat anywhere between 26
and 33 pounds of it in a day, and with soft new shoots up to 84 pounds! Incredibly, that s almost 40%
of their body weight! Occasionally they consume meat and some other

There s no question that we need tougher drunk driving laws for repeat offenders. We need to take a

The worst part of drunk driving is the deaths caused by it. Almost half of drivers killed in crashes who

Conflict Between Scotland And England
Identity is what forms the core of humanity as it is claimed and sustained in reciprocal role
relationships (Thoits, 175). People are constantly defining themselves to fit into a group, ethnicity, or
regional identity. It is crucial because humans need the community and culture as the greater the
number of identities held, the stronger one s sense of meaningful, guided existence (Thoits, 175).
Hence, by having a regional identity and a larger sense of unity as an imagined community gives a
sense of security to humans as stated that people s awareness of being part of the global space of flows
seems to have generated a search for new points of orientation, efforts to strengthen old boundaries
and to create new ones, often based on identities of resistance (Paasi, 475). Humans are partially
threatened by globalization as they struggle to maintain identities of what they had in the past; this is
demonstrated not just in individuals, but also amongst countries, as with Brexit. In the UK, Scotland
has had many struggles to sustain their own heritage and regional identity as a separate entity from
England. From the basic necessities, like currency, the conflict between Scotland and England can be
seen; as the sterling pound in England is different from the sterling pound in Scotland. From the
banknotes, it portrays the friction between Scotland and England and amplifies the regional identities
of the two areas. The sterling pound is currency circulated around the UK.

Alexander The Great And Greek Culture Of Alexander The Great
Through his admiration of Greek culture, Alexander The Great was able to spread the Hellenistic ways
of life such as art, education, government, customs, ceremony, and purpose. Those cultural factors fall
under the category of Classical Greek ideals which are the basis of the influential Hellenistic period
promoted and envied by Alexander of Macedon. Through learning the history of his extensive military
campaigns across many lands, it is fair to state that Alexander of Macedon and his empire represent
the essence of Greek culture as well as a transformation of it in in a way he saw as more modern. We
even see this in some of the cities he named after himself. Alexander of Macedon left a legacy in not
only the Hellenistic kingdoms, but across the globe though Asia as well. What is interesting is that the
Macedonian Empire was an idea of its own, but we still see Alexander follow many Hellenistic views
as he values some beliefs in which are Greek. He admired the Greek culture and brought it to the
many places he conquered. After his death, the Macedonian ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Through his conquest as king of Macedonia he managed to spread Greek culture which is referred to
as the time period of Hellenism. Macedonia, in which he was born, fell under the Hellenistic circle.
This being the reason why he was so knowledgeable of Greek culture and made it a part of life in
every land he conquered during his reign. The Greeks disfavored Macedonia as told by Diodorus of
Sicily, but that has not much to do with the fact that Alexander envied the Greek culture. Even though
his vast empire fell apart after his death, his name still lives on as one of, and if not, the greatest
conquer to ever live. His admiration of Greek culture has had an influential impact on the world since
and seeing in which it has is truly remarkable. His advocation of Grecian cultural lifestyle and

One year later, Dr. Hollerith won a contest held by the U.S. Census Bureau with his tabulating
machine that eventually saved the government agency $5 million and years of work. He then
organized his company in 1896, and finally incorporated the Tabulating Company in 1905.
The third installment of the Computing Tabulating Recording Company s predecessor is the recording
industry. Many different companies invented their own type of recording device. Dr. Alexander Dey of
Dey Patents Co. (later Dey Time Register Company) invented the first dial recorder in 1888. Willard
Bundy invented the first time clock that could record the arrival and departure of employees. Harlow
Bundy incorporated the Bundy Manufacturing Company with his brother Willard s time clock as its
main product. Bundy then acquired the Standard Time Stamp Company, which produced time stamps
and card recorders, and soon after came up with the key punch as their job time recorder. The Chicago
Time Register Company created the first autograph time recorder, and manufactured key, card, and
autograph employee time recorders. J. Willard and F. Frick formed the first time card recording
company. In 1900, the International Time Recording Company is formed by George Fairchild to be
the selling agent for the recording industry. Their suppliers included Dey Time Register Company,

Stanley s Last Letter

my interruptions in class, lateness in class, and my interruptions in your class have been a wake up
call for me. I know I wrote an email apologizing but I felt that writing a letter would be the best way
to express my sincerest apologies. You made me realize that I haven t been putting as much of an
effort as I should in your class. I cannot afford to fail your class as that would cancel my scholarships
which would then stop me from attending college and would seriously affect my future and family. I

The Meaning Of Agona By George Santianina
Those who do not remember the past are condemned to repeat it. These illustrious words were spoken
by George Santayana. They are words that carry special meaning to me. I have heard these words
spoken by some of the most powerful influencers and role models, such as Chuck Palahniuk and Mark
Twain. Many people see our history and future as a chaotic timeline of events and historical moments
that define who we are and who we have been, but that is not always the case.

Good Vs. Evil In The Epic Of Beowulf
Beowulf is thought to be one of the first major English epics estimated to be written between (insert
time period) and is still to this day considered one of the greatest epics of all time. What typically
would characterize a proper epic is the use of a main character known as the Epic Hero with a
supernatural enemy that compliments the character s traits. An epic also recounts travels, quests and
heroic battles; as well highlights the ideas of good vs. evil and moral dilemmas. It is through the
portrayal of the great hero Beowulf and his battles with foes to cater to the greater good that this epic
is brought to life and immortalized.
It is fitting to think that Beowulf is possibly the first major epic because in many ways, it proves to be
very simple in the idea of what an epic truly is about. In any proper epic, the idea of good vs. evil is
always prevelant. There is the idea that a protagonist must go against an antagonist in effort to defend
the greater good. Beowulf surrounds the conflict between a brave and mighty warrior and demons
from hell. Beowulf himself represents the good and must fight many evil monsters such as Grendel
and a dragon in order to save his own people in an attempt to create peace. Beowulf makes the fight
between good and evil a necessary part of his life. This can be further identified when he says I have
wrestled the hilt from the enemies hand, avenged the evil done to the Danes; it is what was due. (lines

De Aeternitate Mundi By St. Thomas Aquinas
In De Aeternitate Mundi, St. Thomas Aquinas postulates whether the world could have always existed
and whether God could have caused the world to begin existing. Initially, St. Thomas Aquinas posits
that if either an eternal or temporal world is possible, then it is impossible to conclude that the world is
definitely eternal or created in time without divine revelation. Basically, Aquinas is saying that both
worlds are possible.
The eternity of the world argument is this if it be impossible that something caused by God has always
existed, it will be so either because God could not make something that has always existed or because
such a thing could not be made, regardless of God s ability to make it. Basically, if the world could not

Since nothingness is followed by existence in time, then there existed an instance when existence was
nothing. Thus, there was a certain time that the world did not exist. In contrast, Aquinas states Rather
it suffices that non being be prior to being by nature. Now, whatever naturally pertains to something in
itself is prior to what that thing only receives from another. Essentially, Aquinas is positing that if an
order is affirmed it is due to nature and not time. To say that X is made from nothing means that it is
not made from anything. Further, Aquinas states, A creature does not have being, however, except
from another, for, considered in itself, every creature is nothing, and thus, with respect to the creature,
non being is prior to being by nature. Essentially, Aquinas postulates that non being precedes being by
nature because something needs to be caused by something else. Further, Aquinas asserts, the nature
of the creature is such that, if the creature were left to itself, it would be nothing. Aquinas is saying
that if something in itself is considered you can consider it nothing because it cannot cause itself.
Additionally, Aquinas uses the example of the sun illuminating an object, the air, demonstrating that

radicalization in its current form is most often used to describe a phenomenon that leads to home

the United States. Another group known today is called ISIS, and have the same interests of recruiting
young individuals for possible attacks on our own soil. These individuals share certain commonalities,
such as hobbies, religion, and specific ideologies. Terrorist organizations provide a specific ideology
that caters to a very specific type of individual. Young individuals are targeted by terrorist recruiters in

Sexual Assault On Campus
Did you know that a woman in college have the same chances of getting sexually assaulted as getting
the flu? Did you know that one out of every six women has been assaulted or is the victim of an
attempted assault? Sexual assault is a very real problem in todays society. I chose this subject because
I have been personally affected by it.
Sexual Assault on Campus ( Armstrong, Hamilton, and Sweeney)
College girls are the most at risk for rape. One major factor why, is the drinking of alcohol while at
parties. The majority of rapes that happen on and off campus, are considered party rape . Party rape is
when women are plied with alcohol for the purpose of taking sexual advantage, or an intoxicated

Sometimes we forget that men are assaulted too. In 2003 there was a scandal in New York about a
football team that raped lowerclassmen. The players reportedly lured them into a cabin at camp and
used things such as broomstick, pinecones, and golf balls to assault them. It got out a couple days later
when one of the boys was still bleeding at told his parents. One of the boys was so injured that he
needed surgery. When the media got ahold of the story it was automatically assumed as rape, when
you hear about un consented anal penetration it s considered sexual. In the United States the definition
of rape is as Wencelblat (2004) says Carnal knowledge of a female, not one s wife, forcibly and
against her will. Only vaginal penetration by the penis constituted Carnal knowledge pg 40. As you
can see this leaves it kind of open ended for men. In the case of the football players they ended up
falling under deviant sex acts and indecent assault ( Deviant sex being anal penetration for anything
other than medical purposes). Men being raped is much rarer than women but it still has happened to
one in thirty three men. One in ten rape victims are

This is because of Egyptian artwork has many artworks in the frontal pose, only wearing some fabric
around their waist, leaving the top halves of their bodies exposed. I specifically think about the Seated
Scribe, where a man has his top half of his body naked and has a white piece of fabric wrapped around
his waist. It also reminds me of the blank face, clenched fist and open palm of the Khafre sculpture.
Similarly to Khafre sculpture, the girl is in frontal pose. The girl has one hand clenched into a fist
holding the balloon and the other relaxed and open. The sculpture could possibly have the same
meaning to the painting, with her clenched fist representing the strength of the album and the relaxed
palm showing the steadiness or fluidity of the album. Additionally, just like the sculpture, the girl has
an emotionless face, which could suggest there is no weakness or flaw in the album. All in all, I
believe modern art has traces/resemblance to past art in them, and there are no exceptions in this
artwork for an album

Describe the types of dementia and common signs and symptoms
Unit 40 P1 Describe the types of dementia and common signs and symptoms The term dementia
describes a set of symptoms which can include loss of memory, mood changes and problems with
communication and reasoning. These symptoms occur when the brain is damaged by certain
conditions and diseases, including Alzheimer s disease, vascular dementia and Creutzfeldt Jakob
disease. Age is the greatest risk factor for dementia. Dementia affects one in 14 people over the age of
65 and one in six over the age of 80. However, dementia is not restricted to older people: in the UK,
there are over 17,000 people under the age of 65 with dementia, although this figure is likely to be an
underestimate. Alzheimer s Disease Alzheimer s disease ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The difference between these types depends on what has caused the damage in the brain and which
part of the brain has been damaged. Common signs and symptoms of vascular dementia may include:
Problems with speed of thinking, concentration and communication. Depression and anxiety
accompanying the dementia. Symptoms of a stroke, such as physical weakness or paralysis. Seizures.
Periods of severe confusion. Visual mistakes and misperceptions (for example, seeing a rug as a
pond). Changes in behaviour (for example, restlessness). Difficulties with walking and unsteadiness.
Hallucinations and delusions. Problems with continence. Psychological symptoms such as becoming
more obsessive. Dementia with Lewy Bodies Dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) is a form of
dementia which shares characteristics with both Alzheimer s and Parkinson s disease. It accounts for
around 10% of all cases of dementia in older people and tends to be under diagnosed. Named after the
doctor who first identified them in 1912, Lewy bodies are tiny, spherical protein deposits found in
nerve cells. Their presence in the brain disrupts the brain s normal functioning, interrupting the action
of important chemical messengers. Lewy bodies are also found in the brains of people with Parkinson

The Causation Of The Modern Slave Trade
There are endless reasons that human trafficking exists in modern times. These reasons are not black
and white, and have a multitude of contributing factors, cause and effect, and influences. The
causation of the modern slave trade is outlined in chapters three, four, and five of the text: Human
Trafficking: Interdisciplinary Perspectives, written by Mary C. Burke. Chapter three, titled,

broadband communication, and economic upheaval to prey on those most vulnerable ... people are
largely defined by their economic worth, and since the most vulnerable have only their bodies to sell

four defines population and migration as an explanation for human trafficking. As the world s
population increases dramatically, there are many poor and vulnerable individuals who are forced to

traffickers can exploit and from whom they can profit (Burke 2013). Victims are driven into human
trafficking because they are unable to sustain themselves living in poverty, or are vulnerable as an
immigrant or refugee.
However, poverty is not a black and white cause of human trafficking, as poverty and economics
exacerbate other reasons, such as gender inequality. Females around the world do not have the same
opportunities that a male might, including adequate healthcare, nutrition, and education. These

In the 1960s, continuing affluence and cheaper building technology meant that Australians could
afford to pay for bigger homes. The addition of second bathrooms and extra bedrooms became
common. Many families built a family or rumpus room, providing two living areas and some homes
were air conditioned. As car ownership increased, many new houses were built with a garage or

benches made household cleaning even easier.

The behavior in this document is inhumane and not natural. Why do people watch James Bond? To
see action. Why do people watch films about Nazis? To see power and sadism! We can do that! We
can make something even more sadistic than... more sadistic than what you see in movies about Nazis.
Sure I can. Because there is never been a movie where heads get chopped off except in fiction, but that
is different because I did it in real life! Anwar think making a film of killing would intrigue people and
they would enjoy watching it. But, in the documentary there so much pain and suffrage, we usually do
not see crimes these deadly and brutal in film. This documentary has no boundaries when it comes to

Cuban Migration
In order to understand the complex relationship that Cuba has with the United States and the nature of
Cuban American immigrant communities that exist in South Florida, it is necessary to first understand
the unique circumstances that led to the large influx of Cuban immigrants.
For many Cubans the Batista government was simply a puppet regime with the puppet masters being
wealthy Americans. This was because his economic policies favoured foreign investors and did little
for the development of domestic industries, which resulted in the wealth of the country being
concentrated in the hands of a wealthy white minority. Consequently, in the 1950s, this harsh regime
caused political resistance to reach to its boiling point. In response to these ... Show more content on

Prior to the development of Cuban American communities, 1940 census reflected the population of
South Florida being 172,172. Approximately 99.9% of the population spoke English and over 92% of
the population was white. The growth of Cuban American communities in South Florida drastically
altered this demography. Today, Florida is now the third largest state in the nation, with more than 20
million people in 2015. Florida s growth can best be termed a population boom facilitated by a series
of migration. Although migration from other northern states continues to be a major contributor to
population growth, international migration plays a more important role, particularly in the south.
According to the Pew Research Center 2015 statistical profile of Hispanics of Cuban origin, there is
an estimated 2 million who live in the United States. This accounts for 3.7 percent of the overall
Latino population. Cuban Americans are the most regionally concentrated, with approximately 70
percent residing in South Florida. This change in demography has also carried linguistic implications.
The first wave of immigrants who arrived in the United States all thought that they were in temporary
exile and it was only a matter of time before the new government was overthrown and they would be
able to return to their island home. Consequently, unlike many other immigrant groups they made little
attempts to assimilate in the United States, instead they maintained their culture, customs and more
importantly their language. Therefore, in the late 1900s Spanish speakers comprised over 1/3 of the

Summary Of Margaret Atwood s The Victory Burlesk
Madeleine Davies had once said that Margaret Atwood s female bodies are inevitably coded bodies
that tell the story of the subject s experience within a political economy that seeks to consume them,
convert them into consumers in turn, shrink them, neutralize them, silence them, and contain them
physically or metaphorically. (Davies 60). In Margaret Atwood s short story, The Victory Burlesk,
Atwood is showing just that; Atwood is demonstrating how a woman is shrunken, silenced, and
contained. This short story is bringing attention to how people feel shame for women in realization of
reality, and how there is a focus on the Good Woman and the Bad Woman , how Bad Woman are
represented.
The Victory Burlesk is a story in which a woman is on stage and reveals herself as an elderly woman,
putting on a show for one another to watch, a show in which people in the audience began to feel
shame about. I could feel shame washing through me. (Atwood 20 21), there is a woman on the stage,
making herself vulnerable for everyone to see, and yet others are shameful in this situation. Why do
others feel shame? Because there is a realization that this woman is real. That that is a actual body up
there, one that no one wants to sexualize anymore due to her age and appearance. But also because
they are not properly showing the representation of how women are shown on stage. Difference can
make one feel uncomfortable, to the point they feel shame for another person. It was seen as if

Credibility Judgement Of Information
Credibility judgment of information largely rests upon three elements of communication: source,
message, and medium (Metzger, Flanagin, Eyal, Lemus, McCann, 2003). Source credibility refers to
the degree to which individuals perceive an information source as reliable. A source of information
may be a person, a group, or an organization, each of which has its own characteristics that may affect
credibility perception such as ability (expertise) and motivation (trustworthiness) to provide accurate
and trustful information (Tormala Petty, 2004). Message credibility is an evaluation of characteristics
of the message communicated such as informational quality, accuracy, currency and language
intensity, which create believability (Metzger et

Symbolism And Allegory In The Crucible By Arthur Miller
The Crucible, a phenomenon play, written by Arthur Miller is an allegory to the McCarthy Trials of
the 1950s. An allegory is a story with two levels of meaning literal and symbolic. In an allegory the

William and Hathorne represent Arthur Miller, Joseph McCarthy, and J.Edgar Hoover. Events like the
people who were hung, and people were accused for being witches were similar to blacklisted and
they blamed for being communist. Instances were, when Procter s wife was pregnant, and Danforth
made people choose a side were in comparison to Francis Walter s wife took a photo with his finance
and the communist hide their beliefs. Miller wrote The Crucible as an allegory to show morality
within a society that will accept others, to teach paranoia results in trauma and to criticize the
government way of causing unnecessary fear. In the allegory several characters represent real people
for example, John Proctor is symbolic to Arthur Miller. Therefore, both were convicted of serious
crimes against society. John Proctor stated his innocence before the court accused him over witchcraft
(Miller 198). On the other hand, Arthur Miller was called before the HUAC and was asked to give
information on communist activities( Navasky 219).These men are seen as noble because they would
not bend to the corrupt courts, but to convince their pursuers each man had to offer up his own
wrongdoing. In

The Role Of Concreteness And Imagery Of Mental Processing
Psycholinguists are interested in the role of concreteness and imagery in mental processing. The dual
coding theory proposes that mental representations are associated with two distinct systems: the verbal
system, which deals specifically with language and the non verbal imagery system, which deals with
nonlinguistic objects and events (Clark Paivio 1991; Harley 2008; Paivio et al. 1988). The two
systems are distinct, yet they are interconnected to each other in a way that activation in one system
can lead to activation in the other. For example, one can think of the word apple and also visualize the
object apple. The dual coding theory holds that concrete language has the ability to activate both the
verbal and the visual system, while abstract language activates only the verbal system (Clark Paivio
1991; Kounios Holcomb 1994).
Previous studies in the field have shown that the imagery and concreteness of a word can influence its
identification. Specifically, it has been suggested that imagery can produce better performance in
learning and recall because of our ability to access existing mental representations and use them as
memory aids. The guiding question following from this is: Are concrete words indeed superior to
abstract words in their ability to evoke mental images? This paper intends to explore the dual coding
theory and the effects of concreteness and imagery in greater detail. I present studies that discuss the
role of images as possible mediators,

Rutherford B. Hayes s Impact On The Civil Rights Movement
Rutherford B. Hayes Rutherford B. Hayes was the 19th president of The United States of America. He
also served in other important political positions, including the Governor of Ohio. Perhaps the most
important thing Hayes did was get America on the right track towards the civil rights movement.
During the president s political career, he was known for being honest and trustworthy, which helped
him become one of our nation s presidents. Rutherford B. Hayes was born on October 4, 1822 in
Delaware, Ohio to Rutherford Hayes and Sofia Bichard. His father died before he was born and was
raised by his mother and uncles. The future president began attending Harvard Law in 1843 and
graduated in 1845. Hayes married Lucy Webb ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Rutherford B Hayes resigned to campaign all across Ohio to run for governor. The biggest topic of the
election was whether African Americans would get voting rights. The election was won by Hayes in
1867, but he had some struggles. He was a Republican under a Democratic legislator and had no veto
power. However, he helped create a deaf mute school and a school for girls. In his second term, he
won voting rights for black males, and helped what would become Ohio State University be founded.
He also brought the idea of lower taxes and a better life for prisoners. He left office in 1872 and came
back in 1876 and served a year long term. Rutherford B. Hayes had one of the most controversial
presidential elections. In 1876, Hayes won the Republican presidential nomination. Nearing the end of
the election, South Carolina, Louisiana and Florida had trouble with the ballot. To solve the problem, a
group of representatives voted on where all the aforementioned states votes would go. The majority of
the panel were Republican, Hayes s party and he was voted into office. The Democrats were outraged.
There was an agreement made, and many troops in the south were called back. This officially ended
the Reconstruction of the states. Rutherford B Hayes was named the president by the council and
began his term March 4, 1877. Shortly after the president was elected, The Great Railroad Strike
began. Railroad workers

Descriptive Essay About Hotel
Today i went to the coolest hotel ever! I couldn t believe what i was seeing, it was amazing!
Everything was made out of glass, but that s not all. Every room had some sort of waterfall, river,
creek, or body of water in it. When I got off the plane all I wanted to do was go inside. The outside
was gorgeous, it was all glass and surrounding the hotel was the pacific ocean .When you walk in you
see that the floor is made of glass, the walls are made of glass, the ceiling is made of glass, even the
tables and chairs are made of glass. Right beside the front desk is a big waterfall with beautiful blue
water pouring out of it, at the end of the waterfall there is a place where you can sit down. The
concierge leads you up to your room and you have to walk up these beautiful glass stairs. In my room
there was a soft blue rug covering the whole floor but still being able to see the floor was glass
underneath. There was a king size bed and on the opposite wall there was a fireplace with a tv on the
mantle. I turned and noticed there were two other doors in my room, so I walked into the first door
and everything was black.. I turned on the light and there was a huge waterfall with a swimming pool
at the end of it. It looked like the one downstairs but it was a little bit smaller than that one. I decided i
would go into the other room and it was the bathroom. The floor also had a blue rug but everything in
the bathroom was glass and i mean everything. The toilet was glass, the

Pet Guinea Dog Research Paper
Unexpectedly as she approached, my sister showed a worried face as she held our pet guinea pig. His
name was Ramiro, he and his guinea pig brother were our first pets ever. We had just gotten home
after spending a whole morning garage sale hunting with our mom and brother. It was around 2:30 in
the afternoon when we were experiencing something new, the loss of a member of our family.
Although he was just a guinea pig, a big bond grew between him and our family. It was from that day
December 7, 2012, that our lives changed, we sat petting our new pets as our dad turned a normal pet
cage into a mansion. It was times where this tiny white furred body with spots finished obstacle
courses and put smiles on our faces. When he rode in a custom remote

The Works Of Vincent Van Gogh

absolutely love. You put every ounce of your being into this one assignment with the hopes of
receiving praise and knowing that your hard work has paid off in the end, only for you to be shattered
when you re work is ridiculed. Now imagine that this doesn t just happen once, but everytime.
Constantly being surrounded by this negativity would surely make you believe that the people are
right; that your work is useless. This is the constant state of mind that Vincent Van Gogh lived in with
his work being heavily criticized and never praised.
Background and Audience Relevance: Van Gogh is one of the most well known artists today. His vivid
landscapes and portraits are praised for their use of different colors and bold brush strokes. Many
people can easily recognize a Van Gogh painting, but they don t know much regarding his life or the
struggles he faced as an artist.
Speaker Credibility: I took French for 3 years, and learned more than just the language but also some
history and culture. Impressionism was an art movements that begun in France, so naturally we
focused on impressionistic art and artists for most of the time. Furthermore, I also took a European
history class that incorporated the importance of art for each time period.
Thesis: Learning about Vincent Van Gogh will help you better understand the post impressionist art
movement, and the difficulties he endured.

  • 2. Why The Giant Panda Is One Of The Most Misunderstood Animals The Giant Panda is one of the most misunderstood animals on the planet. For many years, it was believed to be a type of racoon, like the similarly named red panda. However, genetics testing and observation have revealed that the panda is in fact, a bear. It has several adaptations that make it unusual. First is the fact that it has six digits on the front paws, giving it an opposable thumb ideal for holding onto the stalks of bamboo which it consumes in great amounts. The genitalia of the male are rear pointing and small which is also decidedly bearish, and much more like those of the red panda. It has only been since 1995 that the Panda has been officially considered a bear. Typical pandas have a large head, and distinct white and black ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Males grow to 190 275 pounds and 64 76 inches in length, with females being slightly smaller and lighter at 155 220 pounds. They reach sexual maturity between ages 4 1/2 to 6 1/2 years and mate once during the spring months of March, April, and May. The females are in estrus for anywhere from 1 to 3 weeks, but are only really receptive for a few days of that time. During August and September, pregnant females give birth to anywhere from one to three cubs, with one being the more common. The cubs are weaned at nine months, but often stay with their mothers for more than two years. Like most bears, pandas are solitary animals. Females with cubs being the only exception. They mark their territories by scratching trees and by rubbing a musky anogenital gland against rocks and trees. Additionally, they communicate with different vocalizations. Scientists have identified 11 distinct calls, but cannot identify the exact function of all of them. Pandas are quite vegetarian, making bamboo 99% of their diet. Adults can eat anywhere between 26 and 33 pounds of it in a day, and with soft new shoots up to 84 pounds! Incredibly, that s almost 40% of their body weight! Occasionally they consume meat and some other ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 4. Conflict Between Scotland And England Identity is what forms the core of humanity as it is claimed and sustained in reciprocal role relationships (Thoits, 175). People are constantly defining themselves to fit into a group, ethnicity, or regional identity. It is crucial because humans need the community and culture as the greater the number of identities held, the stronger one s sense of meaningful, guided existence (Thoits, 175). Hence, by having a regional identity and a larger sense of unity as an imagined community gives a sense of security to humans as stated that people s awareness of being part of the global space of flows seems to have generated a search for new points of orientation, efforts to strengthen old boundaries and to create new ones, often based on identities of resistance (Paasi, 475). Humans are partially threatened by globalization as they struggle to maintain identities of what they had in the past; this is demonstrated not just in individuals, but also amongst countries, as with Brexit. In the UK, Scotland has had many struggles to sustain their own heritage and regional identity as a separate entity from England. From the basic necessities, like currency, the conflict between Scotland and England can be seen; as the sterling pound in England is different from the sterling pound in Scotland. From the banknotes, it portrays the friction between Scotland and England and amplifies the regional identities of the two areas. The sterling pound is currency circulated around the UK. ... • 5. Alexander The Great And Greek Culture Of Alexander The Great Through his admiration of Greek culture, Alexander The Great was able to spread the Hellenistic ways of life such as art, education, government, customs, ceremony, and purpose. Those cultural factors fall under the category of Classical Greek ideals which are the basis of the influential Hellenistic period promoted and envied by Alexander of Macedon. Through learning the history of his extensive military campaigns across many lands, it is fair to state that Alexander of Macedon and his empire represent the essence of Greek culture as well as a transformation of it in in a way he saw as more modern. We even see this in some of the cities he named after himself. Alexander of Macedon left a legacy in not only the Hellenistic kingdoms, but across the globe though Asia as well. What is interesting is that the Macedonian Empire was an idea of its own, but we still see Alexander follow many Hellenistic views as he values some beliefs in which are Greek. The Greeks disfavored Macedonia as told by Diodorus of Sicily, but that has not much to do with the fact that Alexander envied the Greek culture. Even though his vast empire fell apart after his death, his name still lives on as one of, and if not, the greatest conquer to ever live. • 11. Good Vs. Evil In The Epic Of Beowulf Beowulf is thought to be one of the first major English epics estimated to be written between (insert time period) and is still to this day considered one of the greatest epics of all time. What typically would characterize a proper epic is the use of a main character known as the Epic Hero with a supernatural enemy that compliments the character s traits. An epic also recounts travels, quests and heroic battles; as well highlights the ideas of good vs. evil and moral dilemmas. It is through the portrayal of the great hero Beowulf and his battles with foes to cater to the greater good that this epic is brought to life and immortalized. It is fitting to think that Beowulf is possibly the first major epic because in many ways, it proves to be very simple in the idea of what an epic truly is about. In any proper epic, the idea of good vs. evil is always prevelant. There is the idea that a protagonist must go against an antagonist in effort to defend the greater good. Beowulf surrounds the conflict between a brave and mighty warrior and demons from hell. Beowulf himself represents the good and must fight many evil monsters such as Grendel and a dragon in order to save his own people in an attempt to create peace. Beowulf makes the fight between good and evil a necessary part of his life. This can be further identified when he says I have wrestled the hilt from the enemies hand, avenged the evil done to the Danes; it is what was due. (lines 1668 1670 page). He carries great ... • 12. De Aeternitate Mundi By St. Thomas Aquinas In De Aeternitate Mundi, St. Thomas Aquinas postulates whether the world could have always existed and whether God could have caused the world to begin existing. Initially, St. Thomas Aquinas posits that if either an eternal or temporal world is possible, then it is impossible to conclude that the world is definitely eternal or created in time without divine revelation. Basically, Aquinas is saying that both worlds are possible. The eternity of the world argument is this if it be impossible that something caused by God has always existed, it will be so either because God could not make something that has always existed or because such a thing could not be made, regardless of God s ability to make it. Basically, if the world could not have ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Since nothingness is followed by existence in time, then there existed an instance when existence was nothing. Thus, there was a certain time that the world did not exist. In contrast, Aquinas states Rather it suffices that non being be prior to being by nature. Now, whatever naturally pertains to something in itself is prior to what that thing only receives from another. Essentially, Aquinas is positing that if an order is affirmed it is due to nature and not time. To say that X is made from nothing means that it is not made from anything. Further, Aquinas states, A creature does not have being, however, except from another, for, considered in itself, every creature is nothing, and thus, with respect to the creature, non being is prior to being by nature. Essentially, Aquinas postulates that non being precedes being by nature because something needs to be caused by something else. Further, Aquinas asserts, the nature of the creature is such that, if the creature were left to itself, it would be nothing. Aquinas is saying that if something in itself is considered you can consider it nothing because it cannot cause itself. I chose this subject because I have been personally affected by it. Sexual Assault on Campus ( Armstrong, Hamilton, and Sweeney) College girls are the most at risk for rape. It got out a couple days later when one of the boys was still bleeding at told his parents. One of the boys was so injured that he needed surgery. When the media got ahold of the story it was automatically assumed as rape, when you hear about un consented anal penetration it s considered sexual. In the United States the definition of rape is as Wencelblat (2004) says Carnal knowledge of a female, not one s wife, forcibly and against her will. Only vaginal penetration by the penis constituted Carnal knowledge pg 40. As you can see this leaves it kind of open ended for men. Cuban Migration In order to understand the complex relationship that Cuba has with the United States and the nature of Cuban American immigrant communities that exist in South Florida, it is necessary to first understand the unique circumstances that led to the large influx of Cuban immigrants. For many Cubans the Batista government was simply a puppet regime with the puppet masters being wealthy Americans. This was because his economic policies favoured foreign investors and did little for the development of domestic industries, which resulted in the wealth of the country being concentrated in the hands of a wealthy white minority. Prior to the development of Cuban American communities, 1940 census reflected the population of South Florida being 172,172. Approximately 99.9% of the population spoke English and over 92% of the population was white. The growth of Cuban American communities in South Florida drastically altered this demography. Today, Florida is now the third largest state in the nation, with more than 20 million people in 2015. Florida s growth can best be termed a population boom facilitated by a series of migration. Although migration from other northern states continues to be a major contributor to population growth, international migration plays a more important role, particularly in the south. According to the Pew Research Center 2015 statistical profile of Hispanics of Cuban origin, there is an estimated 2 million who live in the United States. This accounts for 3.7 percent of the overall Latino population. Cuban Americans are the most regionally concentrated, with approximately 70 percent residing in South Florida. This change in demography has also carried linguistic implications. The first wave of immigrants who arrived in the United States all thought that they were in temporary exile and it was only a matter of time before the new government was overthrown and they would be able to return to their island home. • 24. Summary Of Margaret Atwood s The Victory Burlesk Madeleine Davies had once said that Margaret Atwood s female bodies are inevitably coded bodies that tell the story of the subject s experience within a political economy that seeks to consume them, convert them into consumers in turn, shrink them, neutralize them, silence them, and contain them physically or metaphorically. (Davies 60). In Margaret Atwood s short story, The Victory Burlesk, Atwood is showing just that; Atwood is demonstrating how a woman is shrunken, silenced, and contained. This short story is bringing attention to how people feel shame for women in realization of reality, and how there is a focus on the Good Woman and the Bad Woman , how Bad Woman are represented. The Victory Burlesk is a story in which a woman is on stage and reveals herself as an elderly woman, putting on a show for one another to watch, a show in which people in the audience began to feel shame about. I could feel shame washing through me. (Atwood 20 21), there is a woman on the stage, making herself vulnerable for everyone to see, and yet others are shameful in this situation. Why do others feel shame? Because there is a realization that this woman is real. That that is a actual body up there, one that no one wants to sexualize anymore due to her age and appearance. • 28. The Role Of Concreteness And Imagery Of Mental Processing Psycholinguists are interested in the role of concreteness and imagery in mental processing. The dual coding theory proposes that mental representations are associated with two distinct systems: the verbal system, which deals specifically with language and the non verbal imagery system, which deals with nonlinguistic objects and events (Clark Paivio 1991; Harley 2008; Paivio et al. 1988). The two systems are distinct, yet they are interconnected to each other in a way that activation in one system can lead to activation in the other. For example, one can think of the word apple and also visualize the object apple. The dual coding theory holds that concrete language has the ability to activate both the verbal and the visual system, while abstract language activates only the verbal system (Clark Paivio 1991; Kounios Holcomb 1994). Previous studies in the field have shown that the imagery and concreteness of a word can influence its identification. Specifically, it has been suggested that imagery can produce better performance in learning and recall because of our ability to access existing mental representations and use them as memory aids. The guiding question following from this is: Are concrete words indeed superior to abstract words in their ability to evoke mental images? This paper intends to explore the dual coding theory and the effects of concreteness and imagery in greater detail. I present studies that discuss the role of images as possible mediators, ...
