Simple Definition of SUBJECT: 
o the person or thing (word or word group) that
is being discussed or described
o a noun, noun phrase, or pronoun that performs
the action of a verb in a sentence

Making Subjects and Verbs
Agree
1. When the subject of a sentence is composed of two
or more nouns or pronouns connected by ‘and’, use
a plural verb.
She and her friends are at the fair.
A clean driving license, sales experience and team spirit are
essential.
2. When two or more singular nouns or pronouns are
connected by ‘or’ or ‘nor’, use a singular verb.
The book or the pen is in the drawer.
Neither he nor his wife is to be seen.

Making Subjects and Verbs Agree
Sums and products of mathematical processes are expressed as singular
and require singular verbs.
One plus one is two! Two multiplied by three is six!
The expression, ‘more than one’ takes (strangely enough) a singular
verb:
More than one student has tried this.
Making Subjects and Verbs Agree
Nouns such as civics, mathematics, dollars, measles, and news require
singular verbs.
 The news is on at six.
Note: the word, ’dollars’ is a special case. When talking about an
amount of money, it requires a singular verb; but when referring to
the dollars themselves, a plural verb is required.
 Five dollars is a lot of money.
 Dollars are often used instead of rubles in Russia.
