The document discusses direct and indirect speech in English. Direct speech uses quotation marks to report the exact words spoken, while indirect speech does not use quotation marks and does not have to be word-for-word. Indirect speech requires changing pronouns, adverbs of time and verbs to reflect the current tense. Commands and questions also change structure in indirect speech.
In todays life the generation of plastic waste has become the serious issue. It causes serious health and ecological problems like breeding of mosquitos and if eaten by cattle and wild animals endangers their lives too, also it stops vegetation from growing and obstructs in drain and piping, etc. The consumption of plastic has reached to 100 million tons, and this has caused increase in depletion of natural resources such as petroleum and natural gas etc. About 13 percent of the municipal solid waste is caused by plastic. 32 million tons of plastic waste was deposited in 2011, which is 12.7 percent of total MSW. Annually approximately 500 billion plastic bags are used worldwide every year. More than 1 million bags are used every minute. The main aim of this project is to make useful product from waste thermocol i.e. adhesive. The Roman Empire A Historical Colossus.pdfkaushalkr1407
The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

2. Speech
In the English language, there are two
ways of conveying what someone else has
said:
•direct/quoted speech and
•indirect/reported speech.
3. Direct Speech
What is it?
Direct/quoted speech, involves quoting the exact
words uttered by the person, within inverted commas
or quotation marks.
2nd September 2012 Anne said, “I will
be coming home
tonight”.
Anne said, “I will
be coming home
tonight”.
statement
4. Indirect Speech
Indirect/reported speech, on the other hand, does not
have to be within quotes or reported word-to-word. In
fact, unless one is relaying the exact words spoken, one
should never use quotation marks.
5th September 2012 She said that she
would be coming
home that night.
She said that she
would be coming
home that night.
statement
5. Changes in Time and Adverbs in
Indirect Speech
Changes to
Today that day/the same day
Tomorrow the next day/the following day
Yesterday the day before/the previous day
Next week/month/year the following week/month/year
Last week/month/year the previous week/month/year
Now/just then
Ago before
Here there
This that
6. Changes in Pronouns in Indirect Speech
Direct

Reported
speech
I He, she
you I, she, he, we, they
we they
Me Him, her
You Him, her, us, them
Us them
my His, her

yours Mine, his, hers, ours,

ours Mine, his , hers, ours,

Direct
speech
Reported
speech
7.
8. • When the reporting verb is in the past tense,
all present tenses in the direct speech will
change into the corresponding past tenses
• For example, the simple present will become
simple past.
• He said, ‘I want to go.’
• He said that he wanted to go.
9. • She said, ‘I am coming.’
• She said that she was coming.
• He said, ‘I have finished.’
• He said that he had finished.
10. • When we report questions, the indirect
speech is introduced by verbs such as asked,
inquired etc.
• He said to me, ‘What are you doing there?’
• He asked me what I was doing there.
11. • If the reporting verb is in the present tense,
the tenses in the direct speech do not change.
• He says, ‘He is leaving.’
• He says that he is leaving.
12. There are two types of questions:
1.Information questions (wh questions):
• Reported questions change the word order
• You usually write asked to introduce the reported
sentence
When will Sally and Tom come
for dinner?
Peter asked me
when you would
come for dinner
13. 2. Yes/No questions
•If/whether is used to introduce reported questions that
do not start with wh words.
‘Is it windy
today?’Kevin asked his
grandfather if it was
windy that day
14. C. Commands
In commands you change the imperative into
infinitive
‘Go and do your homework’
Paul told his son to go and do his
homework
‘Don’t kiss me’
Chris told his mother not to kiss
him
The introductory verb in commands is
told+object
15. Indirect Speech of Imperative
Sentence
A sentence which expresses command, request,
advice or suggestion is called imperative
sentence.

• Please help me.
• Learn your lesson.
16. • To report an Yes/No question, we
use if or whether.
• He said to me, ‘Are you interested?’
• He asked me if I was interested.
• He said to them, ‘Will you listen to such a
man?’
• He asked them whether they would listen to
such a man.
17. • When we report commands and requests, the
indirect speech is introduced by verbs expressing
a command or request. Examples are: ordered,
requested, commanded, shouted etc.
• The master said to the servant, ‘Go away.’
The master ordered the servant to go away.
• He said to them, ‘Please wait here till I return.’
He requested them to wait there till he returned.

The teacher said to student,
“do not waste time”.

19. Indirect Speech of Exclamatory Sentences
Sentence which expresses state of joy or sorrow
or wonder is called exclamatory sentence.
For example.
•Hurrah! We won the match.

•Wow! What a nice shirt it is.
20. Direct speech Indirect Speech
