Artemisinic acid inhibits melanogenesis in human melanocytes by reducing cholesterol synthesis. It decreases cholesterol content by downregulating the HMG CoA reductase gene, which is critical for cholesterol synthesis. Artemisinic acid treatment leads to downregulation of the C/EBP α gene, which mediates reduced expression of the HMG CoA reductase gene. This inhibition of cholesterol synthesis attenuates melanogenesis in human melanocytes.
