COPD (Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease)
Definition: “According to WHO COPD is a lung disease
characterized by chronic obstruction of lung airflow that interferes with normal
breathing and is not fully reversible but if it is not treated it will becomes life-
threatening lung disease”
COPD is defer from Asthma in such a way , in COPD a predominance
of neutrophils, macrophages, and cytotoxic T-lymphocytes (Tc1 cells) is
observed.
The inflammation predominantly affects small airways, resulting in progressive
small airway narrowing and fibrosis (chronic obstructive
bronchiolitis) and destruction of the lung parenchyma with destruction of the
alveolar walls (emphysema).
COPD also explained by term as chronic bronchitis and emphysema,
smoker's cough.

Diagnosis:

According to WHO Dignosis is carried out in any patient who has
symptoms of cough, sputum production, or dyspnea (difficult or
labored breathing), and/or a history of exposure to risk factors for
the disease.
a simple test used for diagnosis of COPD is spirometry:
Principle of test : In this test we measures how deeply a person
can breathe and how fast air can move into and out of the lungs.
If abnormal shortness of breath
increased forced expiratory time,
A low peak flow,
Chronic cough and sputum production often precede the
development of airflow limitation by many years, although not all
individuals with cough and sputum production go on to develop
COPD.
Treatment
Treatment of COPD is same as like asthma.
Antiasthmatics class of drugs are used for the
treatment of COPD.
