Since Helen Keller s early years in life she has always been blind, deaf and mute. Members in her
family knew there was sure to be many difficulties in teaching her basic life routines, and from where
the family stood there was no way to teach her. Helen sometimes got so frustrated she would lash out.

Humanities brings students a very important understanding that there is a big difference between
understanding history and understanding culture. In history we learn about certain events, wars,
treaties, plagues, etc. With humanities, we can come to understand the culture behind the history, how
people behaved in a certain time period, what they believed in, what they created. This gives us a
deeper understanding into how history was shaped, and the more we learn about other cultures the
more we can respect each other as human beings.
From the beginning of the text, in chapter one I was amazed by the how advanced some were in their
day to day lives. The Hammurabi s law was as advanced as modern culture in many aspects. Women
were largely independent, they could own property and do many things women in America couldn t do

Within chapter 14 we read about idealism and romanticism. These artistic concepts I myself still use
today. The discussion of music such as Beethoven, music we admire through school bands, and even

You may know him as Mark Twain, but his parents John and Jane referred to him by his birth name
Samuel L. Clemens. Samuel was a well known American humorist, journalist, lecturer, and novelist.
Samuel wasn t known to laugh or smile much, for reasons that will be presented. He was and is most
commonly recognized for his best selling novels The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Adventures of
Huckleberry Finn. Samuel learned to take responsibility early on in his life, which helped immensely

Clemens was born November 30th, 1835 in a tiny village in Florida, Missouri. In 1839, his family s
