Book Thief Effect
Don t judge a book by it s cover. Unless, of course, the cover hints at a major literary element used
throughout the entire book. The Book Thief by Markus Zusak is printed with a series of dominoes on
the cover. Simply picking up the book for the first time, a reader would not know the meaning behind
the image; but as the story unfolds, its significance and meaning is realized. Cause and effect has a
major impact on our lives. Actions all have a reaction and a consequence. The Book Thief is an
excellent example of this. When Hans helped the Jewish man in the street, he was viewed as a Jew
lover which resulted in fear that his house would be searched for hidden Jews. Because of the fear,
Max was forced to leave for all their safety. When ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Liesel and Rudy s relationship as well. At one point in early December, the two friends ran into

her about it. Rudy defends her, saying that he s the one they re after and to leave her alone. Viktor
Chemmel throws it into the river and Rudy immediately runs down the bank after it until he spots it
floating away. Then he jumps into the water and rescues it, asking Liesel for a kiss after he gets

Theme Of Allusion In Grass And English Con Salsa
History and Allusion in grass and English con salsa According to Kennedy and Dana, an allusion is
where a person, place or thing is referred to indirectly, either by text or as an illustration (Kennedy and
Dana 408). When allusions are used in a poem, it is assumed that the poet and the reader share a
common body of knowledge. The poems grass by Carl Sandburg and English con salsa by Gina
Valdès are both similar in the sense that they both employ allusions in their narratives. Furthermore,
the allusions in these poems discusses history and reflecting on the role of a person in history. The
poem grass has five allusions which are Austerlitz, Waterloo, Gettysburg, Ypres, and Verdun. On the
other hand, English con salsa alludes to Xochicalco, Tuxpan River, Benito Juarez, George
Washington, Donald Duck, Batman, Teocaltiche, Uruapàn, Oaxacan, Juchitàn, Zapotec, Nahuatl,
Santa Tristeza, Santa Alegria, Santo Todolopuede, Lake Pàtzcuaro, Jalisco, Santee, and La Jolla.
Interestingly, both poems discuss renowned history through the illusions. In grass, line 1 in the first
stanza states that Pile the bodies high at Austerlitz and Waterloo (Sandburg 126). The use of the word
Austerlitz points out to the historic Battle of Austerlitz. Historically, the Battle of Austerlitz occurred
in 1805 involving armies from French, Austria, and Russia. There was a high number of casualties in
the battle, which the phrase discusses by stating pile the bodies high (Sandburg 126). Similarly,

A Retrospective Cohort Design And Measuring...
The initial primary article selected was written by Chopra, Ratz, Kuhn, Lopus, Chenoweth, and Krein.
This study discusses recognizing patterns of PICC associated bloodstream infection by studying and
measuring characteristics of patients with PICCs as well as the details of the specific PICC used in
order to identify common factors of infection. The researchers viewed the topic of interest as clinically
significant due to the growing implementation of PICCs and to provide information for safer decisions
among PICC use and care of patients (Chopra et al., 2014). To recognize these patterns of infection,
the researchers opted to follow a retrospective cohort design; looking back to adult patients who
received PICCs between June 2009 ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
All participants were studied until the PICC(s) were excised or an infection developed. Patient
characteristics measured included: demographics, hospital unit, comorbidities, and markers of illness
(Chopra et al., 2014). Device factors considered included: duration of use, indication for placement,
complications such as dislodgement or number of insertion attempts, arm of choice used, vein of
choice, unit where PICC was placed, implanting operator such as radiologist or vascular access nurse,
number of lumens, and gauge of PICC. The association between the descriptive characteristics chosen,
both PICC and patient, and the development of bloodstream infection was determined using bivariate
logistic regression for unadjusted odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals (Chopra et al., 2014). The
study determined the most common factors among those sampled to be: an overwhelming majority of
male patients (98%), most seeking long term use for antibiotic treatment (52%) or for venous access
(21%), 85% were placed by vascular access nurses within the basilic vein of the right arm (Chopra et
al., 2014). Single lumen PICC devices (48%) were the most commonly used, many placed within
medical or surgical units (18%) and remained for a median length of time of 21 days (Chopra et al.,
2014). Over a total of 1156 catheter days, 966 PICCs were analyzed, 58 PICCs (6%) acquired

How Is Randle Mcmurphy A Trickster
The novel One Flew Over the Cuckoo s Nest, by Ken Kesey, presents a mischievous character
inspired by the mythological trickster. Bearing many strong resemblances to the trickster archetype,
this man of the name Randle Patrick McMurphy strives to transform the new world into which he was
placed as many mythological tricksters do. By taking advantage of his natural talents and traits, he
shapes the ward to his will and disrupts the natural order of things. In One Flew Over the Cuckoo s
Nest, Randle McMurphy utilizes trickster like qualities, akin to those found in the tales of The Coyote,
Homeric Hymn Hermes and Prometheus Our Creator to bring revolution and disorder to the ward.
This is accomplished through the rebellious personality he ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

As seen in the story of the Coyote, McMurphy defies authority in order to achieve his own personal
goals and create disorder. From his first encounter with nurse Ratched, McMurphy makes it clear that
he bows to no one. When she reminds him that he must submit to his admission shower and follow the
ward s rules, he replies: Ya know, ma am, ya know that is the ex act thing somebody always tells me
about the rules... just when they figure I m about to do the dead opposite (Kesey, 24). What this first
impression describes in McMurphy is not only that he will not be molded by the authorities, but he
will in fact disrupt their system. Much like the Coyote, if certain rules do not agree with his objectives,
he will have no trouble breaking them. A second example of this rebellious behavior is shown at then
end of part I when McMurphy leads the other men to watch

Every corporation must start somewhere meaning they must research where they want to be located.
To find an appropriate location, research is necessary because they cannot just build their business
wherever they want because that can be considered acts of aggression if they do not ask the
community for them to be in that area. So, to avoid confrontation corporations can ask the community
and give them their intent and how they are going to improve their community. With them taking the
extra step of asking for help from the community, then the business will run more smoothly.

The Origin Of The Aboriginal Noongar People
In the south west of Western Australia lay over a dozen tribes of the Noongar people. The aboriginal
Noongar tribe is one of the largest Aboriginal cultural blocks in Australia, and their names stems from
the meaning of the original inhabitants of the south west of Western Australia. The Noongar people are
deeply, spiritually connected to the earth, nature, and their ancestral past through what they call the
dreaming , or dreamtime . For Aboriginals, the Dreamtime is how their cultural knowledge is formed
and how they understand the creation of the world, passed down traditionally through oral telling and
stories. The Dreamtime is the world of their ancestors and how the spirits were born out of darkness.
One of the most well known deities/spirits and its corresponding origin story is that of the Waugal, or
the Rainbow Serpent.
The serpent is believed to be the first thing that moved across the land, making the paths in the land
such as dunes, rivers, mountains, valleys, and where the serpent stopped to rest is where lakes and
bodies of water were formed. The Noongar recognize the Waugal as the giver of life because it mainly
created waterways to provide for the people.
The story of the Waugal comes with a story of the creation of the earth, when it was dark, flat, and
featureless. The serpent is said to have awakened, aware of what would happen when he becomes real,
because how could the serpent be able to shape the earth if he was no hands or feet? Suddenly, as

China s Current Growth Rate
China is currently the 2nd largest economy in the world, trailing the us and set to overtake the us
economy by 2024 according to the IMF. GDP of china has grown extensively over the past three
decades and have contributed to large scale growth in exports and imports, technological
advancements, health, and more. The acceleration of globalisation was due to two major
advancements, the first was the economic reforms of 1978 when china opened the country and the
joining of the WTO in 2001. China is classified as a socialist economy currently being ruled by a
communist government. China s current growth rate for GDP is recorded as being 7.7% in 2013 and
has continued to slowdown over recent years due to a global economic slowdown. Trade By 2013
china had accounted for 15.4% of GWP and 10.5% of exports of goods and services around the world.
The expansion of china s exports and imports from 2005 to 2012 is phenomenal. In 2005 exports were
valued at $762 billion and in 2012, it was rated at 2,048.8 Billion. Imports during this time increased
from $660 billion in 2005 to 1,818 billion in 2012. However in 2009 china took a small hit as the GFC
effected the world economy and the export value from 2008 to 2009 dropped from $US1,430 billion
to $US 1,201 Billion. In 2014 the biggest exports from china were electronic equipment, machinery,
clothing and accessories and furniture, thus showing the major use of the manufacturing sector in

Beijing s fear for regime change, particularly since the IAEA inspectors visited the Parchin military

Nevertheless, China also had to maintain stable relations with the U.S. in order to keep a favorable
macro environment for economic growth, resulting in a balancing strategy to maintain good relations
with all parties concerned.
However, not only Iran s nuclear activities catered for suspicion among the international community.
Ahmadinejad s exclamation, to wipe Israel off the map particularly affected the U.S. approach, with
Israel being the U.S. most important ally in the region. Even though China was forced to ban military
trade with Israel in the beginning of 2005 due to U.S. pressure and with the same reason it already
happened during the late 1990 s, Ahmadinejad s choice of words made China increasingly critical,
stating that Israel s sovereignty has to be respected and that it would not tolerate anything that could
alter the stability in the Middle East. At the same time, China progressively opened its borders for the
Gulf states, resulting in four rounds of negotiations in the beginning of 2006 regarding customs, trade
remedies and trade of goods. The results of these negotiations, a reduction of import tariffs and
accelerating oil relations, made China increasingly independent from its trade with Iran, but
maintained a close and supportive relationship to it. Consequently, China slowly replaced the United
States as a trustworthy, at least trade wise, partner of Saudi Arabia by offering economic incentives

The Pros And Cons Of US Immigration
On Monday March 6, President Donald Trump signed a revised executive order that bans immigration
from six Muslim countries, including Syria, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Yemen, and Sudan. The previous
executive order also included Iraq, but was dropped due to the state s significant role in the war on
ISIS. This order also bans all refugees from coming into the United States for 120 days for the purpose
of stronger security in the U.S. But, there are a few flaws in this ban, like the fact that the none of the
six countries have committed a terrorist act on U.S. soil in the past 40 years (Gibbs). The ban will

Dangerous Challenges In Richard Connell s The Most...
Everyone needs to believe that they have a chance especially during difficult challenges. In our world,
we are faced with tough challenges and tough decisions. In Richard Connell s The Most Dangerous
Game, it is no different. In the story, Rainsford is faced with a very dangerous challenge. Rainsford is
faced with life or death games where Zaroff and Rainsford have a game where they hunt each other.
During this game, Rainsford believes that he had a chance against Zaroff and that helped him because
he outsmarts Zaroff in the game. If Rainsford is experienced with nature and his surroundings then
this means that Rainsford is very intelligent in nature, especially against a madman like Zaroff. In
Richard Connell s, The Most Dangerous Game, readers learn that experience with nature will help one
survive.
To begin, one event that helps the theme to develop in the story is when Rainsford could decipher
what animal was shot with what kind of gun even in the darkest of the night (Connell 4 5). This scene
is significant because this scene shows readers that Rainsford is smart, skillful with his surroundings,
and can problem solve quickly. When Rainsford heard gunshots he knew he could be in danger, so he
reacted quickly and stayed quiet. This proves Rainsford has lots of experience with nature and knows
what to do in tough situations. Thus, he is able to survive when in danger. The authors crafts Connell

Elizabeth Cady Argumentative Essay
Elizabeth Cady Stanton, the leader of the women s civil rights movement, said The best protection any
woman can have is courage. Having courage was one of the most important things during the women

Women were used to get work done around the house, make food, and basically be a maid for their
husband and children. Women were not allowed to vote, and weren t allowed at important meetings
because society believed that only men could lead. These unfair rights are what lead to the actions that
Elizabeth was doing. Elizabeth Stanton was also majorly influenced by the world around her because
she learned about the Holy Bible (the Christian s Bible), and was not a fan. She believed that the Bible
denied women of their full rights, since the Bible said that men are inferior to women. Following this,
Elizabeth took on the role religion played in the struggle for equal rights for women. With her

similar to the beliefs of the Transcendentalists. There is actually a transcendentalist tenet that supports
the belief of being individual and not conforming to society s standards. It reads, The idea of thinking
of oneself without the rules of society inspires free thought. The abolitionist movement and the
women s rights movement embodies this tenet by showing that they will not obey the rules that say
they can t contribute to society because they are just women, and these women choose to express their

Humor In The Chahonesque
Introduction Humour is an universal human characteristic which all cultures posses. In the British
society it is important to have humour, because it is seen as demonstration of health and well
being.Humour firstly appeared in British literature during the Middle Ages, when Chaucer developed
the storytelling tradition along with the ironies that resulted from the juxtaposition of people from
different classes and points of view.Britain s ancient class system has always been a mystery to
strangers and a great source of humourfascination. In the past, the British were expected to know their
place .This means that British people accepted their status as working class, middle class or upper

Estee Lauder Strengths And Weaknesses

CORPORATE STRATEGY International Expansion
Amanda Ruiz
SWOT Analysis
Strengths
Estée Lauder has an extremely large presence as the global leader in prestige beauty with products
being sold in more than 150 countries. This global success is attributed to their focus on cultural
relevance, making sure that their products, signage, marketing etc. appeals to consumers in each local
market. Estée Lauder also benefits from brand recognition and loyalty; however, this seventy two year
old company isn t only known for high end, classic products anymore. They have a very successful
track record of incorporating complimentary firms through merger and acquisitions. Consumers from

The company spent $179 million on R D in 2017 alone (Research Development, n.d.). With this
budget, they are able to identify shifts in customers preferences, improve upon existing products and
to deliver the new superior products they are known for.
Weaknesses Estée Lauder s distribution network consists of salons, specialty stores and high end
department stores. This is potentially limiting its reach to customers. A limited distribution strategy
tends to increase dependency on specific channels which could be disastrous. For instance, Macy s is
Estée Lauder s biggest client, accounting for nine percent of total sales and nearly forty percent of
sales in the United States (Terlep, 2016). Macy s is also aggressively closing stores. Unfortunately, the
company has not fully made use of the internet, increasing its online presence and focusing more on e
commerce would be advantageous. They were also very late to the specialty channel stores, such as
Sephora, costing them prime placement (Fernandez, 2017). Estée Lauder should work to expand its
reach if they want to stay relevant.

Manchester Terrier Research Paper
The Manchester Terrier has a small, muscular body with erect ears and a short, glossy coat. He is the
perfect dog for people who are looking for a small, hardy dog that also makes a wonderful sporting
companion. This breed fits well to most types of family, although it tends to be a one person dog. He
is very affectionate with his owner but suspicious around strangers. He is intelligent, high strung, and
has an unlimited supply of energy. Because this breed can be bossy, he requires early, consistent, and
precise training and should not be spoiled. As a terrier, he may show dog aggression and can have a
high prey drive toward small animals.
He is a good watch dog and tends to bark incessantly if he is left alone for too long. He is a little hard
to housebreak and is sensitive to extreme climate. This is a breed that appreciates a sweater in cold
days to keep him warm. He is long lived and very seldom ill. He can live outside the house provided
you have a heated kennel.

was once closely related to a white English Terrier that seems to have vanished probably due to his
tendency to deafness. The Manchester Terrier has evolved as a reliable house dog that maintained a
keen sporting instincts. A number of this breed was exported form the United Kingdom to the United
States, Canada, and then later on to Germany in the 1800s. Early Manchester Terriers had cropped

Essay on Native American Ritual Dancing
Native American Ritual Dancing
It has often been said that the North American Indians dance out their religions (Vecsey 51). There
were two very important dances for the Sioux tribe, the Sun Dance and the Ghost Dance. Both dances
show the nature of Native American spirituality. The Ghost Dance and the Sun Dance were two very
different dances, however both promote a sense of community.
The Sun Dance was the most spectacular and important religious ceremony of the Plains Indians of
19th century North America (Lawrence 1). The Sun Dance became a time of renewal and thanksgiving
for Native Americans. Everyone had a role to play either in the preparation leading up to the dance, or

In the conversation the Sioux woman has with the tree she explains why they are killing it, and what
their plans for the tree are. After the tree is cut down, it is not allowed to touch the ground. McGaa
states that the men can only set the tree down four times to rest on the way back to the reservation
(86).
There is an arena set up where the dancing and other activities will take place. Once the cottonwood is
brought back, the men place it in the center of this arena. Some fifty men then join the group and raise
the tree with rope. Four songs are sung four times to the each of the four winds. Cloth banners
representing the four directions are tied to the branches, and then two hides are tied above the cloth
(one in the shape of a human and the other of a buffalo).
The cutouts represent thankfulness. Twelve chokecherry branches are tied crosswise beneath the
buffalo and the human images. The branches symbolize the twelve moons, the twelve months of the
year (McGaa 86).
The same evening the dancers who will be pierced in the ceremony participate in a Sweat Lodge
ceremony.
On the first actual ceremonial day of the Sun Dance another Sweat Lodge is held for those men and
women who are going to participate in the dancing. A Sweat Lodge is believed to help heal a person
spiritually. Groups that participate in Sweat Lodges are supposed to gain empowerment.
The dancers then dress and prepare him or her self in the tipi. There is a traditional dress

Descriptive Essay About My Family
My Oasis
A little girl with blonde hair and blue eyes stares out the window of her parents red Mazda Tribute. As
the Mazda comes to a stop, the little girl lays her eyes upon a big green house with a sign out front that
says, Welcome to the Lake . That blue eyed girl was me ten years ago, and that big green house was
my grandparent s lake house right after they purchased it. This was the first time I ever laid eyes on a
home that now holds a special place in my heart. I have grown to love the lake house for three
reasons; the lake provides me with a place to connect with my family, it s a retreat from the outside
world, and I have many different hobbies that involve the lake.
Directly in the middle of the large green lake house is a family room. The room has two dark blue
couches and the floor has bean bags scattered all over; all of the seats provide us with enough space to
fit my grandparents, aunts, uncles, parents, siblings, and cousins all in one room. Whenever families
get bigger they start to drift apart because everyone has so much going on. All of my family lives less
than fifteen minutes away from me, but sometimes we all get so caught up in our own lives that we
forget how important it is to spend time with each other. This family room is our anchor; It provides us
with a place where we can all forget about the little things in our lives and focus on what matters,
family. Some of my best memories of the lake aren t even about the lake, but instead the memories

Kurt Vonnegut s Slaughterhouse-Five Essay
I. Author
Kurt Vonnegut s background had an endless influence upon his writing. In his early years, Vonnegut
was a private in the 106th infantry division in World War II. He and five scouts were caught behind
enemy lines, and then captured. They were held POWs and were beaten on various occasions. In 1945,
they witnessed the fire bombing of Dresden, Germany. Kept during this time in a slaughterhouse, this
is part of the inspiration for Slaughterhouse five. After being released from the Slaughterhouse,
Vonnegut called Dresden utter destruction and carnage unfathomable . This distressing time in his life
led to one of the many themes of Slaughterhouse five which is that nothing good can come from war
and a massacre. This theme ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He also is in a zoo on the foreign planet, Tralfamadore. Billy also spends a brief amount of time in an
institute for people suffering post traumatic stress disorder due to the war. Point of View: In the
beginning, Vonnegut the narrator, explains his relations to the war and his experiences in Dresden.
After that he narrates the story, but comes up at other various times in the book as this is I or this is me
. He comes up then as for the reader to relate Billy Pilgrim to the author. The rest of the book is in
third person omniscient. It mostly talks about Billy and his experiences, but sometimes minor
characters thoughts are talked about too. Theme: There are a couple themes in this book. The first
theme is the destructiveness of a massacre. This is displayed when the narrator says Everything is
supposed to be very quiet after a massacre, and it always is, except for the birds. And what do the
birds say? All there is to say about a massacre, things like Poo tee weet? (pg. 215 Vonnegut). The bird
says this because the narrator is trying to get the point across that there is nothing good to say about a
massacre, and really nothing at all to say about the pointlessness and pure destruction it causes. The
second theme displayed in this book is the illusion of free will. The Tralfamadorians have the
knowledge of the fourth dimension which shows them their whole life played out for them and all
parts of it happening simultaneously

References to Sue s Homosexuality in Thomas Hardy s Jude the Obscure
Perhaps the most interesting character in Thomas Hardy s Jude the Obscure is Susanna Florence Mary
Bridehead (Sue). Throughout the novel, she is described as everything from boyish and sexless, all the
way to Voltairean and just simply unconventional. Some claim she had read prolifically many writers
noted for their frankness and/or indecency (Hardy 118). Upon a surface reading, one can t help but
wonder about the sexual identity and desires of Sue. At first, there seems to be none; however, upon a

In fact, the conception of all three of her children is conveniently skipped in the text. Take into
consideration Jude s previous behavior with Arabella he is a man with an enormous sex drive and
probably next to impossible to fight off night after night, especially living in the same house with him.
He is, indeed, powerfully sexed (Howe 514), and her relationship with Jude is one that she accepted
with distaste (Gosse 390). He is often stealing kisses and she is continually asking him to stop. As
cousins, and similar in many ways, these two isolated people completed each other and needed each
other, but their relationship shouldn t have been physical. As Ingham informs us in the introduction,
Sue says, We ought to have lived in mental communion, and no more (xx). Ingham also states that Sue
inspires the spirit side of Jude s nature, whereas Arabella supplies the flesh side (xii).
Early in the novel, when Jude and Sue are first getting to know each other, she tells him that she has
no fear of men and that she has mixed with them almost as one of their own sex (Hardy 118). In fact,
she could be discussing the undergraduate that she lived with for a short time, who wanted to be her
lover, but she saw him as a best friend. This passage depicts a woman who has nothing against men
and enjoys their company, but who is in no way sexually interested in them. Furthermore, in part
three, Sue tells Jude that she is a virgin: I have

There are no separate ideals for women versus men, and no task that are strictly for women or men. A
newly married couple often lives for weeks in the wife s settlement since majority of the time spouses
are from different settlements. The couple takes turns living within each other s settlement until they
finally settle down in one or the other. As long as the couple remains sleeping and eating together they
are considered married. But if the couple no longer sleeps or eat together they are considered
separated. For the Semai, the ideal adult man has a good relationship with his wife, lover his children
more than anything, has a normal sexual appetite, a good appetite, and a healthy cool body. He keeps
his feelings and thoughts to himself. He does not cause confusion for others and does not try to make
someone including his own child do something contrary to that person s will. He does not harm
strangers even if he mistrusts them. If he is being attacked he will open his arms hoping to make the
attacker change their mind or the Semai man will flee.

What Does Integrity Mean To Me
As described by Merriam Webster dictionary:
1. Integrity
a. The quality of being honest and fair
b. The state of being complete or whole
2. Professionalism
a. The skill, good judgment, and polite behavior that is expected from a person who is trained to do a
job well
What integrity means to me? Integrity is being honest and fair along with being complete or whole.
Throughout my career in the military as well as in my personal life, I find integrity to be an important
trait in the way I live and hold myself. As of this time and point in my life I do not believe that I have
lost any of those things. Integrity and professionalism can go hand in hand. During my time on
deployment, being the only mine man, I have found myself working 13 plus hours on many days. A
normal work day is 0600 to 1600 but we do not see too many of those. Possessing the integrity to be at
work at 0600 to muster with someone that is not here themselves. With the long schedule I do not
complain, in turn, I provide the Navy with my strength, skills and abilities to do the best that I can.

Social Injustice Book Review
Social Injustice Book Review
Injustice: why social inequality persists, by Daniel Dorling.
The main aim of this book is to help re define injustice but first we must ask ourselves what is social
justice? As defined by (Walker, 1999, p.9). Social justice is mutual responsibility it insists that we all
accept duties as well as rights to each other and to society .
Dorling s book focuses on 5 main causes of injustice in todays modern world and how these 5 causes
have changed in comparison to what they were in the past. The path to a better future, these contend,
lies in a better understanding and appreciation of how the injustices of the past affect patterns of
oppression today (Spinner Halev, 2012, p.4). What was once seen as unfortunate many years ago has
now become what s known as unjust . Dorling does an excellent job of explaining what these 5 tenants
of injustice are and he does so in an easy to understand language whilst giving us examples of how
these 5 tenants have changed to prior years. Each tenant both past and present is briefly explained to
us in the introduction of the book, but Dorling delves deeper into each tenant in such greater detail in
later chapters. Each chapter shows us how these tenants affect/have affected certain domains within
our society.
These new tenants/faces of injustice nowadays are stated as: Elitism, Exclusion, Prejudice, Greed and
Despair. Old evils/faces that were once said to cause social injustice were due to a lack of: Education
(ignorance), Money (want) Work (idleness) Comfort (squalor) and Health (disease).
Dorling points out that while many people say they don t agree with these beliefs or claim to reject
them, are often at times the ones to uphold ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

William Golding s stance in Lord of the Flies implies that humans will often succumb to their dark
and primal desires, and very rarely to their civilised ones (seeing only Ralph and Piggy considered
their civilised mannerisms) (Green, 2016). Psychologists theorise about a Tripartite or three aspects of
the mind. ID which is a humans most primal desires; and the Super Ego which is the ethical values
that person believes to be right and wrong. These two facets combine to the third, which is referred to
as Ego (Conscious mind) (McLeod, 2016). Golding started to believe that humans inherent desire is
savagely based (Green, 2016). There was a Beastie on the island with the boys, in which all boys
became frightened of. The Beastie was an imagining of the boys inspired by the body of a dead fighter
pilot in the trees suspended by his parachute. As the boys became less inclined to follow rules and go
hunting, they saw the Beastie more and more often. The Beastie finally manifested into a physical
being as the Lord of the Flies for the boy Simon, through the form of a pig s head. This Beastie was
the metaphor for the savagery in the boy s minds their ID facet and only Ralph, Piggy and Simon
could see past this to their Super Ego (civilised) mindset. One can also apply this mindset directly to

Analysis Of Elizabeth Barrett Browning s Sonnets Of The...
All literature reflects the values, attitudes and beliefs of the context of construction. Thus, this means
that whenever we study any text, we must develop a deep understanding of how the context impacts
upon the purpose of the texts and the writers intended discourses. The comparative study of Elizabeth
Barrett Browning s sonnets of the Portuguese and Scott Fitzgerald s Pros fiction The Great Gatsby
allow for a thorough evaluation of the relationship between the texts contexts and values. Both
composers craft arguments on the nature of and value of life itself within the framework of love and
spirituality. Browning, however writes from the perspective of a woman challenging values of the
conventions of the Victorian era. Whilst, Fitzgerald construct s his text as an indictment on the
emerging hedonistic and capitalist creed of 1920 s America the Jazz Age. As we will move through the
texts, the writer s context will influence their discourses and hence the meaning and significance we
derive from each text. Mortality:
Both Gatsby and the sonnets provide commentary on the meaning and value of life itself. The
composers articulate a number of arguments on human mortality and what does and doesn t constitute
a waste of human life. ( I will change the parts I have highlighted)
The Great Gatsby presents most of the characters using immoral and corrupt means to achieve their
American dream. This results in the physical/metaphorical death of a being. Contextually, The Great

to calm her movements down which was good. Overall, I believe Ann Simmons is such an amazing
speaker. Not only was her story life changing but I hope to have the assets that she has as a speaker

  • 2. Book Thief Effect Don t judge a book by it s cover. Unless, of course, the cover hints at a major literary element used throughout the entire book. The Book Thief by Markus Zusak is printed with a series of dominoes on the cover. Simply picking up the book for the first time, a reader would not know the meaning behind the image; but as the story unfolds, its significance and meaning is realized. Cause and effect has a major impact on our lives. Actions all have a reaction and a consequence. The Book Thief is an excellent example of this. When Hans helped the Jewish man in the street, he was viewed as a Jew lover which resulted in fear that his house would be searched for hidden Jews. Because of the fear, Max was forced to leave for all their safety. When ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Upon saying goodnight to one another, Rudy gives her a title, the book thief. The book represents Liesel and Rudy s relationship as well. At one point in early December, the two friends ran into Deutscher and the group that they used to steal with. They snatch The Whistler from Liesel and tease her about it. Rudy defends her, saying that he s the one they re after and to leave her alone. Viktor Chemmel throws it into the river and Rudy immediately runs down the bank after it until he spots it floating away. • 3. Theme Of Allusion In Grass And English Con Salsa History and Allusion in grass and English con salsa According to Kennedy and Dana, an allusion is where a person, place or thing is referred to indirectly, either by text or as an illustration (Kennedy and Dana 408). When allusions are used in a poem, it is assumed that the poet and the reader share a common body of knowledge. The poems grass by Carl Sandburg and English con salsa by Gina Valdès are both similar in the sense that they both employ allusions in their narratives. Furthermore, the allusions in these poems discusses history and reflecting on the role of a person in history. The poem grass has five allusions which are Austerlitz, Waterloo, Gettysburg, Ypres, and Verdun. On the other hand, English con salsa alludes to Xochicalco, Tuxpan River, Benito Juarez, George Washington, Donald Duck, Batman, Teocaltiche, Uruapàn, Oaxacan, Juchitàn, Zapotec, Nahuatl, Santa Tristeza, Santa Alegria, Santo Todolopuede, Lake Pàtzcuaro, Jalisco, Santee, and La Jolla. Interestingly, both poems discuss renowned history through the illusions. In grass, line 1 in the first stanza states that Pile the bodies high at Austerlitz and Waterloo (Sandburg 126). The use of the word Austerlitz points out to the historic Battle of Austerlitz. Historically, the Battle of Austerlitz occurred in 1805 involving armies from French, Austria, and Russia. There was a high number of casualties in the battle, which the phrase discusses by stating pile the bodies high (Sandburg 126). Similarly, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. A Retrospective Cohort Design And Measuring... The initial primary article selected was written by Chopra, Ratz, Kuhn, Lopus, Chenoweth, and Krein. This study discusses recognizing patterns of PICC associated bloodstream infection by studying and measuring characteristics of patients with PICCs as well as the details of the specific PICC used in order to identify common factors of infection. The researchers viewed the topic of interest as clinically significant due to the growing implementation of PICCs and to provide information for safer decisions among PICC use and care of patients (Chopra et al., 2014). To recognize these patterns of infection, the researchers opted to follow a retrospective cohort design; looking back to adult patients who received PICCs between June 2009 ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... All participants were studied until the PICC(s) were excised or an infection developed. Patient characteristics measured included: demographics, hospital unit, comorbidities, and markers of illness (Chopra et al., 2014). Device factors considered included: duration of use, indication for placement, complications such as dislodgement or number of insertion attempts, arm of choice used, vein of choice, unit where PICC was placed, implanting operator such as radiologist or vascular access nurse, number of lumens, and gauge of PICC. The association between the descriptive characteristics chosen, both PICC and patient, and the development of bloodstream infection was determined using bivariate logistic regression for unadjusted odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals (Chopra et al., 2014). The study determined the most common factors among those sampled to be: an overwhelming majority of male patients (98%), most seeking long term use for antibiotic treatment (52%) or for venous access (21%), 85% were placed by vascular access nurses within the basilic vein of the right arm (Chopra et al., 2014). Single lumen PICC devices (48%) were the most commonly used, many placed within medical or surgical units (18%) and remained for a median length of time of 21 days (Chopra et al., 2014). Over a total of 1156 catheter days, 966 PICCs were analyzed, 58 PICCs (6%) acquired CLABSIs. The most common infectious organism was determined to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. How Is Randle Mcmurphy A Trickster The novel One Flew Over the Cuckoo s Nest, by Ken Kesey, presents a mischievous character inspired by the mythological trickster. Bearing many strong resemblances to the trickster archetype, this man of the name Randle Patrick McMurphy strives to transform the new world into which he was placed as many mythological tricksters do. By taking advantage of his natural talents and traits, he shapes the ward to his will and disrupts the natural order of things. In One Flew Over the Cuckoo s Nest, Randle McMurphy utilizes trickster like qualities, akin to those found in the tales of The Coyote, Homeric Hymn Hermes and Prometheus Our Creator to bring revolution and disorder to the ward. This is accomplished through the rebellious personality he ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As seen in the story of the Coyote, McMurphy defies authority in order to achieve his own personal goals and create disorder. From his first encounter with nurse Ratched, McMurphy makes it clear that he bows to no one. When she reminds him that he must submit to his admission shower and follow the ward s rules, he replies: Ya know, ma am, ya know that is the ex act thing somebody always tells me about the rules... just when they figure I m about to do the dead opposite (Kesey, 24). • 27. Descriptive Essay About My Family My Oasis A little girl with blonde hair and blue eyes stares out the window of her parents red Mazda Tribute. As the Mazda comes to a stop, the little girl lays her eyes upon a big green house with a sign out front that says, Welcome to the Lake . That blue eyed girl was me ten years ago, and that big green house was my grandparent s lake house right after they purchased it. This was the first time I ever laid eyes on a home that now holds a special place in my heart. I have grown to love the lake house for three reasons; the lake provides me with a place to connect with my family, it s a retreat from the outside world, and I have many different hobbies that involve the lake. Directly in the middle of the large green lake house is a family room. The room has two dark blue couches and the floor has bean bags scattered all over; all of the seats provide us with enough space to fit my grandparents, aunts, uncles, parents, siblings, and cousins all in one room. Whenever families get bigger they start to drift apart because everyone has so much going on. All of my family lives less than fifteen minutes away from me, but sometimes we all get so caught up in our own lives that we forget how important it is to spend time with each other. This family room is our anchor; It provides us with a place where we can all forget about the little things in our lives and focus on what matters, family. Some of my best memories of the lake aren t even about the lake, but instead the memories ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 28. Kurt Vonnegut s Slaughterhouse-Five Essay I. Author Kurt Vonnegut s background had an endless influence upon his writing. In his early years, Vonnegut was a private in the 106th infantry division in World War II. He and five scouts were caught behind enemy lines, and then captured. They were held POWs and were beaten on various occasions. In 1945, they witnessed the fire bombing of Dresden, Germany. Kept during this time in a slaughterhouse, this is part of the inspiration for Slaughterhouse five. After being released from the Slaughterhouse, Vonnegut called Dresden utter destruction and carnage unfathomable . This distressing time in his life led to one of the many themes of Slaughterhouse five which is that nothing good can come from war and a massacre. This theme ... Billy also spends a brief amount of time in an institute for people suffering post traumatic stress disorder due to the war. Point of View: In the beginning, Vonnegut the narrator, explains his relations to the war and his experiences in Dresden. After that he narrates the story, but comes up at other various times in the book as this is I or this is me . He comes up then as for the reader to relate Billy Pilgrim to the author. The rest of the book is in third person omniscient. It mostly talks about Billy and his experiences, but sometimes minor characters thoughts are talked about too. Theme: There are a couple themes in this book. The first theme is the destructiveness of a massacre. This is displayed when the narrator says Everything is supposed to be very quiet after a massacre, and it always is, except for the birds. And what do the birds say? All there is to say about a massacre, things like Poo tee weet? (pg. 215 Vonnegut). The bird says this because the narrator is trying to get the point across that there is nothing good to say about a massacre, and really nothing at all to say about the pointlessness and pure destruction it causes. The second theme displayed in this book is the illusion of free will. The Tralfamadorians have the knowledge of the fourth dimension which shows them their whole life played out for them and all parts of it happening simultaneously ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

References to Sue s Homosexuality in Thomas Hardy s Jude the Obscure Perhaps the most interesting character in Thomas Hardy s Jude the Obscure is Susanna Florence Mary Bridehead (Sue). Throughout the novel, she is described as everything from boyish and sexless, all the way to Voltairean and just simply unconventional. Some claim she had read prolifically many writers noted for their frankness and/or indecency (Hardy 118). Upon a surface reading, one can t help but wonder about the sexual identity and desires of Sue. At first, there seems to be none; however, upon a deeper reading of the novel, I can t help but suspect that Sue is actually a lesbian. Take into consideration Jude s previous behavior with Arabella he is a man with an enormous sex drive and probably next to impossible to fight off night after night, especially living in the same house with him. He is, indeed, powerfully sexed (Howe 514), and her relationship with Jude is one that she accepted with distaste (Gosse 390). He is often stealing kisses and she is continually asking him to stop. As cousins, and similar in many ways, these two isolated people completed each other and needed each other, but their relationship shouldn t have been physical. As Ingham informs us in the introduction, Sue says, We ought to have lived in mental communion, and no more (xx). Ingham also states that Sue inspires the spirit side of Jude s nature, whereas Arabella supplies the flesh side (xii). Early in the novel, when Jude and Sue are first getting to know each other, she tells him that she has no fear of men and that she has mixed with them almost as one of their own sex (Hardy 118). In fact, she could be discussing the undergraduate that she lived with for a short time, who wanted to be her lover, but she saw him as a best friend. This passage depicts a woman who has nothing against men and enjoys their company, but who is in no way sexually interested in them. • 35. Social Injustice Book Review Social Injustice Book Review Injustice: why social inequality persists, by Daniel Dorling. The main aim of this book is to help re define injustice but first we must ask ourselves what is social justice? As defined by (Walker, 1999, p.9). Social justice is mutual responsibility it insists that we all accept duties as well as rights to each other and to society . Dorling s book focuses on 5 main causes of injustice in todays modern world and how these 5 causes have changed in comparison to what they were in the past. The path to a better future, these contend, lies in a better understanding and appreciation of how the injustices of the past affect patterns of oppression today (Spinner Halev, 2012, p.4). What was once seen as unfortunate many years ago has now become what s known as unjust . Dorling does an excellent job of explaining what these 5 tenants of injustice are and he does so in an easy to understand language whilst giving us examples of how these 5 tenants have changed to prior years. Each tenant both past and present is briefly explained to us in the introduction of the book, but Dorling delves deeper into each tenant in such greater detail in later chapters. Each chapter shows us how these tenants affect/have affected certain domains within our society. These new tenants/faces of injustice nowadays are stated as: Elitism, Exclusion, Prejudice, Greed and Despair. Old evils/faces that were once said to cause social injustice were due to a lack of: Education (ignorance), Money (want) Work (idleness) Comfort (squalor) and Health (disease). Dorling points out that while many people say they don t agree with these beliefs or claim to reject them, are often at times the ones to uphold ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... William Golding s stance in Lord of the Flies implies that humans will often succumb to their dark and primal desires, and very rarely to their civilised ones (seeing only Ralph and Piggy considered their civilised mannerisms) (Green, 2016). ID which is a humans most primal desires; and the Super Ego which is the ethical values that person believes to be right and wrong. These two facets combine to the third, which is referred to as Ego (Conscious mind) (McLeod, 2016). Golding started to believe that humans inherent desire is savagely based (Green, 2016). The Beastie was an imagining of the boys inspired by the body of a dead fighter pilot in the trees suspended by his parachute. As the boys became less inclined to follow rules and go hunting, they saw the Beastie more and more often. The Beastie finally manifested into a physical being as the Lord of the Flies for the boy Simon, through the form of a pig s head. • 37. Analysis Of Elizabeth Barrett Browning s Sonnets Of The... All literature reflects the values, attitudes and beliefs of the context of construction. Thus, this means that whenever we study any text, we must develop a deep understanding of how the context impacts upon the purpose of the texts and the writers intended discourses. The comparative study of Elizabeth Barrett Browning s sonnets of the Portuguese and Scott Fitzgerald s Pros fiction The Great Gatsby allow for a thorough evaluation of the relationship between the texts contexts and values. Both composers craft arguments on the nature of and value of life itself within the framework of love and spirituality. Browning, however writes from the perspective of a woman challenging values of the conventions of the Victorian era. Whilst, Fitzgerald construct s his text as an indictment on the emerging hedonistic and capitalist creed of 1920 s America the Jazz Age. As we will move through the texts, the writer s context will influence their discourses and hence the meaning and significance we derive from each text. Mortality: Both Gatsby and the sonnets provide commentary on the meaning and value of life itself. The composers articulate a number of arguments on human mortality and what does and doesn t constitute a waste of human life. ( I will change the parts I have highlighted) The Great Gatsby presents most of the characters using immoral and corrupt means to achieve their American dream.
