The main collective theme in functionalist theories is the ability to look at society as a whole, rather

education, health care, food, clothing and shelter, as the main factors that define an individual s life
chances (Reference.com). For example a life chance would be if you were born into poverty and a
broken family. The chances of you have a high social status, and good quality life are lower. In my
personal life I have faced many life chances that would limit a person by definition of life chances. I
was born into a poor family that was broke. I have two parents that are criminals and addicts. From the
time I was born my life chances where against me. I personally can see how life chances are truly how
our society works. Because of my family s situation I was luckily put into a boarding school for poor
families. I lived their year round with my brothers and sisters because we didn t go home because it
was not safe. By being in this school I was being given a better life chances. The school ended at 8th
grade, and I was lucky enough to get into another boarding school that deals with families in the same
situations. Not all my brothers and sisters were lucky enough to get in. My twin sister was not

Jazz Music In West Side Story And Romeo And Juliet
In my essay I am going to bring up three different topics. How jazz music makes West Side Story be
evocative of the decade in which it was written, how gang related music would change West Side
Story and Romeo and Juliet, and further how different Romeo and Juliet would be if they would of
sang rather than spoke their soliloquy. Each of these topics has gang related actions and how music
defines the gangs.
In West Side Story both Acts 1 and 2 are mostly instrumental, allowing suspense to form in each
scene. In the 1950 s, gangs are growing more and more. With West Side Story being in New York,
there were the Jets and the Sharks. Jazz music help bring out the actions in each of the two gangs and
helps bring out each of the characters and shows who they really are. In Tonight, the characters are
reflecting on their hopes and dreams. Bernstein crafted the music to mirror the visions of each
character. Jazz music helps build suspense in many scenes in West Side Story, for instance, in The
Gangs Fight in the Street, the music starts to become allegro and the snaps of their fingers build the
suspense even more. The jazz helps show the differences in each gang and how their actions are like
that of the sounds of jazz orchestra. West Side Story also has classical and pop music played
throughout it, and at certain instances all three can be heard together. At the very end of the musical,
the music become piano; and the hurt and anger from Maria is radiated from the music choice.
