How Does Hume Determine Human Existence
David Hume s An Enquiry Concerning Human Understanding is a work which addresses and
questions philosophical ideas through empirical epistemology. In this work, Hume focuses mainly
on ideas of custom, causality, belief, and fiction. Not only, but Hume interconnects all of these,
creating new ideas of perception, and asserts that although humans are reasonable creatures, there is
no true reason as to why we should rely on causality to determine our actions.
To illustrate, in Of the Origin of Ideas, Hume states, that during observation, rather than taking
things as a they truly are, humans have a tendency to instead contort and alter their perceptions to
work in their favor, and relate to them. For instance, Hume states, When we reflect on our past
sentiments and affections, our thought is a faithful mirror, and copies ... Show more content on

According to Hume, it is somewhat impossible to reach an idea of cause and effect. Take for
instance, ...nor is it reasonable to conclude, merely because one event, in one instance, precedes
another, that therefore the one is the cause, the other the effect. In other words, there is no reason to
infer an existence from the appearance of another. Like stated prior, given the fact that perception is
determined by past experience, Hume is correct in his statement. For instance, since perception is
subjective, it is highly unreasonable to conclude causality.
With all that said, Hume s philosophy can be applied to natural law. For example, natural laws are
moral standards that govern human nature, based on the nature of the world. However, the ideas of
natural laws were derived from instances of causality. With this in mind, it can be understood that
not only is causality unreasonable, but also, in a way, is natural law. This, however, is not to say
that natural law has no truth, but rather address the idea that both causality, as well as natural law
are merely relative

Forensic Use of Acid Phosphatase Tests
People who watched crime based television shows understand that DNA evidence is not always
noticeable at first glance. In fact, in some cases, it can be impossible to detect visually. Take
semen, for example. In large amounts, seminal fluid is easy to detect. It leaves a noticeable crusty
stain on most fabric. However, if that fabric is washed then the stain is gone. Presumably, the
evidence is washed away. This is not the case necessarily. There are several methods forensic
scientists use to find traces of semento identify a male s identity. The Acid Phosphatase Color Test
is widely regarded as the most effective way to both locate and characterize a seminal stain.
Acid Phosphatase is an enzyme found in seminal fluid. It comes from the prostate gland (Johnson
2009). Typically, the more Prostatic Acid Phosphatase found in a sample of semen is a sign of
prostate cancer. This is important because the Acid Phosphatase Color Test was once used to
determine of a male had prostate cancer. It was later replaced by Prostate Specific Antigen, aka
PSA. Forensic scientists still use this test to identify semen, however. In 1938, Gutman and Gutman
reported increased levels of acid phosphatase in patients with metastatic prostate cancer (Taira,
Merrick, Wallner, and Dattoli, Reviving the Acid Phosphatase Test for Prostate Cancer ). It was
later replaced by the Prostate Specific Antigen in 1971 (Taira, Merrick, Wallner, and Dattoli,

Ethical Decision Making of a Nurse Essay
Nurses are face with numerous ethical dilemmas each day and if theses ethical situation are not
handled in a professional and ethical manner there can be severe consequences for both the
nurse and the patient. When nurses are face with theses ethical dilemmas, they have a decision
to make. Therefore, what does the nurse do when decision making involves ethical dilemmas?
So, has a nursing student, I have chosen to put myself in the role of a health care provider such
as a nurse. It was my first day of clinical rotation and the client that I was assigned to, was due for a
bath. I was not comfortable giving the patient a bath a lone, so I ask for assistance from one of
my colleagues. The client was a male who was shy and soft spoken.... Show more content on

The principle of autonomy states; individuals have the right to make choices about their own
lives (Kozier et al, 2010.p.79). In health care, this means health care providers must honour the
person s right to choose methods or approaches to diagnosis or treatment (Kozier et al, 2010).
Moreover, by not giving the client, the right to make her own decision this could cause anxiety
and physiological effect to both parties. Which disregard the World Health Organization (WHO),
definition of quality end of life care as the active total care of patients whose disease is not
responsive to curative treatment (SepГєlveda, Marlin, Yoshida, Ullrich, 2002). This definition
includes meeting the psychological, social, and spiritual needs for both patients and families
(SepГєlveda et al, 2002). In addition, the nurse did not put the beneficence principle in action,
which is the obligation to do good (Kozier et al, 2010, p.80). Nurses have a duty to implement
actions that benefit their client s best interest (Kozier et al, 2010). It lays the groundwork for trust
that society places in nursing professional, and provides nursing s context and justification
(Burkhardt Nathaniel, 2002). This principle seems straight forward, but it is actually very
complex. Should we determine what is good by subjective, or by objective, means? So, when
people disagree about what is good, whose opinion counts? In this case, the client, and not the
family because she has the

Fossil Fuels Are A Non Renewable Source Of Energy
86% of the energy the USA uses comes from fossil fuels like petroleum and coal that provide
electricity and gas to power our growing energy needs. Fossil fuels are a non renewable source
of energy, meaning that we will eventually run out one day in the near future. When we drive our
cars to work, taking long showers, and leaving the lights on, we usually don t realize how much
of our resources we are using. Fossil Fuels, Power Plants and Fracking cause many of our
environmental problems that the world faces today due to our growing dependence on energy.
These environmental problems include global warming, air quality deterioration, oil spills, and acid
rain. Saving and producing energy from a renewable resource such as sunlight not only helps to
conserve our limited resources but also translates into happiness, safety for our environment,
boundless energy, and a personal benefit, such as financial savings. During the 18th century,
massive quantities of fossil fuels were used to power the economy let alone the world. MHI states
that During the Industrial Revolution, fossil fuels seemed to be the ideal energy source because of
its seemingly endless supply. Many machines during the Industrial Revolution such as the Steam
locomotives, used coalas a form of energy which would fuel the machine early on to balance the
lack of firewood and charcoal. In this article about fossil fuels, it states that we continued to use
coal because there was a seemingly endless supply of coal

Feudalism In Cinderella
The French invaded the Rhineland, in what is now Germany, in 1792 during the French
Revolution. During this time, the French invaders pillaged towns, raped women, and destroyed
entire families. While the French believed that they were liberating the Germans from the yoke of
feudalism, (Large 629) they were really creating a bitter enemy of the German people who found
unity in hating anything French. This new found zealotry was exemplified during the Romanticism
period by writers such as the Grimm brothers. They believed that writing down these folk tales was
a way of accurately representing their German culture. Due to this deep seeded belief, they allude to
the French invaders of Germanyin Cinderellathrough the use of the evil stepsisters who invade
Cinderella s home. When the stepsisters arrive, Cinderella is forced to work from dusk to dawn
in her own house, but she is able to maintain her kindness. This image created through Cinderella s
struggle can be compared to that of the German people. The portrayal of the evil stepsisters as
France, Cinderella as Germany, and the Dove as the Holy Trinity, shows that the Grimm s version
of Cinderella acts not only as a story to entertain audiences but as a way to represent the German s
struggles against the French occupation of the Rhineland. The stepsisters that intruded into
Cinderella s home are unmistakable allusions toward the French invaders of 1792. The Grimm s

No Ordinary Disruption By Richard Dobbs
Overview As our venture capital firm prepares to take the plunge into global investment, it is
vital that we understand all the forces at work. In the book No Ordinary Disruption by Richard
Dobbs, James Manyika, and Jonathan Woetzel, they examine four forces that are changing our
world and as a result our business and leadership. This executive summary examines the fourth
force of, Greater Global Connections specifically focusing on Chapter 4, Trade, People, Finance
and Data. As Dobbs, Manyika and Woetzel walk us through their theory and evidence, it is clear
that their analysis is well founded and appropriate. Greater Global Connections Trade in Goods
and Services o Trade today is not just located in North America and Western Europe; trade is
now a complex web that includes Asia, Latin America and Africa. o South to South trade,
meaning trade between developing countries, accounts for 40 percent of all goods flow. The
expansion of trade into these new regions is by reason of technological advances and economic
growth and increasing numbers of consumers. o Companies of all sizes and kind can now
participate in trade, for instance trade is no longer just about manufacturing clothing but robotics
and other more advance goods. Finance o Money is the new commodity because of it ease of
transference and makes trade possible. o As represented with trade, developing countries are

Reaction Between Hydrochloric Acid And Sodium Tiosulfate
Reaction Order and Rate Laws
Glenna Hoefs
December 26, 2017 Abstract
This report discusses a laboratory procedure to study the effect of reactant concentration on the rate
of the reaction between hydrochloric acid and sodium thiosulfate, with the aim of determining the
order of each reactant and the rate law for the reaction.
For this experiment, the reactants were added to a well plate in varying concentrations. The
reaction was timed by using a stopwatch and observing the production of a precipitate. The data
collected during this procedure was then analyzed to determine the reaction order for each reactant
as well at the rate law for the reaction.
The hydrochloric acid was determined to have a reaction order of 0, while the sodium thiosulfate
was determined to have a reaction order of 1. The reaction between hydrochloric acid and sodium
thiosulfate was determined to be first order with respect to N2S2O3. The k constant for this
reaction was calculated to be 0.1 1/s.
We conclude that the concentration of hydrochloric acid does not have an effect on the rate of the
reaction. The concentration of sodium thiosulfate, however, is directly proportional to the rate of
the reaction.

Dj Kol Herc Research Paper
Clive Campbell, better known by his stage name DJ Kool Herc, is a Jamaican American DJ who
often threw block parties in the early 1970 s in one of the most impoverished areas of New York
City, the South Bronx . At these party s Herc created rhythmic beats by looping the breaks in
songs. Later these same beats would be accompanied by rap , a rhythmic style of chanting poetry
which is often presented in 16 bar measures or time frames (Thompson). Herc is often regarded as
the father of hip hop musicbecause what started out as just block party music turned into a cultural
movement for many young African American youths. The music in different eras represents a sort
of time machine into what ideas and problems are wrong with society, thus bringing them to the
attention of the masses and getting them solved. Hip Hop music took a progressive approach to
this by presenting big issues and problems that have affected minorities and society in general. By

The Environment Protection Agency s New Clean Power Plan
Introduction
Consol Energy is heavily involved in two major industries: coal and natural gas. This is an
interesting situation given that the two industries directly compete against one another. As a result,
Consol is diversified and strategically projected against the risk of downturn in either profit stream.
Coal Industry
The coal industry has a gloomy economic forecast going forward. The U.S. Environment
Protection Agency s new Clean Power Plan (a part of the Clean Air Act) causes much
uncertainty for corporations like Consol. It was proposed by the EPA in June of 2014. The goal of
the Clean Power Plan is to decrease CO2 emissions by 30 percent in the year 2030 from 2005
levels. Already, it has had an impact on the internal... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Prices for coal are currently down. This drop has coincided with the drop in oil prices.
Originally, it was expected that these two prices would be tied together, and that the drop would
be quite temporary. However, the longer that coal has been down, the more likely it looks like it
is down for the count so to speak. Many analysts believe that there has been an over production
of coal in the past decade and the market has been saturated as a result. With every passing month
that coal s prices stay low, and the supplies keep growing, it becomes less likely that things will
turn around for the better in a permanent manner. Even with the rest of the world playing catchup
with the transition to zero carbon intensive energy sources, the U.S. coal exports have been
extremely low. China, for instance, has imported less in recent years. At one point, they were
helping to drive our export market. In response to the lower demand, many mining corporations
have begun to optimize their operations. This has been done by focusing on lower mining
production costs, cheaper transportation costs, and favorable exchange rates. The goal is to keep
operations from further declining profit wise as the U.S. Energy Information Administration
expects a 7% decrease in total coal consumption for the year 2015. This decline in coal
consumption will likely cause a decline in coal production, causing a decline in jobs for states such
as Wyoming, West Virginia, Kentucky, Illinois, and

All Men Are Created Equal Research Paper
Culture and ethnic groups have many strict values and principles when it comes to war. Most ethnic
groups tend to focus on themselves rather than taking into account the international issues that are
occurring. With the advancement of society, these groups often stand by their morals instead of
trying to engage in new ones and accepting the worldwide conflicts. More often than not, ethnic
groups are discriminated against even after the rise of the concept All men are created equal (The
Declaration of Independence). Yet, this idea is neglected especially in regards to social status and
race. These people have different intentions and repeatedly are being encouraged to blend into
American society and leave their values behind. In the past, equality and individual rights were
portrayed in an extremely different matter which impacted people s views on freedom today.
In today s generation, converging viewpoints make it difficult for an individual to speak their own
mind without prejudice. Politics have a huge range of diverse opinions; however, international
affairs need to be decided by a nation as a whole. In the past, politics led to rivalry between the

During this stage, children s pleasure focuses primarily on the mouth with chewing and biting as
the main sources of stimulation. Too much or too little satisfaction at this stage may cause the
children to smoke or eat often as an adult. Next, children go through the anal stagefrom age one
year and six months until age three. During this stage, pleasure stems mainly from bathroom
activities as children deal with their want for power. In adulthood, anal fixation may cause anal

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Positive Displacement Pumps
By allowing fluid to flow into closed cavity from a source with low pressure, trapping the fluid
and then force it into a receiver which is high pressure by decreasing the volume of cavity is the
positive displacement pumps work. P.D. pumps have their own advantages and disadvantages but
there are a few pros and cons of these pumps that are similar to each other.
Advantages of P.D. pumps
A highly viscous fluid can be easily handled by a couple rotary technologies and air operated
piston pumps. In centrifugal pumps their flow rate and efficiency start to drop above 500 SSU.
This is due to high friction losses in centrifugal pump. However in rotary pump, the flow and
efficiency will typically increase with viscosity. In addition, fluids with viscosities more than
several millions SSU can ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Inherently, positive displacement pumps necessarily need safety or pressure relief pumps because
the principle of operation does not include a pressure restriction. However, it is only possible
using complex mass balancing in oscillating positive displacement pumps vibration free operation.
Besides that, compare to centrifugal pumps, positive displacement pumps which are oscillated are
less suitable for high speeds. It is also a requirement to have a pulsating flow as when the positive
displacement pumps oscillate, it is a pulsation dampener.
The disadvantage in more complicated and complex designs is there are fault prone constructions
with valves that will cause it the stop working at some point. Other than that, in an oscillating
positive displacement pumps, there will be a larger number of wear parts if it is compared with
centrifugal pump. The major disadvantage of positive displacement pump is pump stroke is
manually set by adjusting the collar for determination of the volumes. It is generally less accurate
and less easily repeatable if it is manual

Virtue Ethics Application to Business Ethics Essay
Virtue Ethics Application to Business Ethics
As with all forms of ethics, whilst written about in a general sense the ethical thought appear a
feasible process and an appropriate way to act and behave, it however needs to stand up against

Macintyre would argue that current ethics of Western corporations is unethical, Milton Freedman s

absolutely contested by Macintyre, who would argue that money is not the end rather a means to a
further end of social responsibility.
Kindness would be an important virtue to own, and with this character trait you would expect the
individual to shown compassion and lovingness in a situation. For example is it acceptable to
sack able workers purely because they are excess to needs of the company and by saving money
on there wages you can earn more for yourself. The virtuous answer would be no it is far better to
treat your staff with the up most respect than to run a business for the maximisation of profits.
Proponents of virtue ethics could argue that by treating your staff more virtuously you will reap
finical rewards anyway. They may be more willing

How Does Juror Use Argumentative Appeals In 12 Angry Men
12 Angry Men depicts twelve jurors deliberating on the life of a young man accused of murdering
his father. In the beginning, Juror 8 (Henry Fonda) stands alone against eleven other jurors with the
sole plea of not guilty. Throughout the film, Juror 8 brings other jurors to his opinion with the use
of multiple argumentative tactics. More and more jurors join the side of Juror 8 until just one juror
remains with a plea of guilty. Eventually, Juror 3 (Lee J. Cobb) succumbs to an emotional
breakdown and pleads not guilty, saving the defendants life. With the use of a variety of
argumentative appeals, Juror 8 skillfully changes the mind of the other eleven jurors to plead not

logical throughout the deliberation. For a large portion of the movie, Juror 4 kept the plea of
guilty. This was due to one unshakeable fact: a woman had seen the defendant stab his father
through the window of her apartment. Juror 4 believed that even if all other evidence was
thrown out, the woman had still seen the boy kill his father and he was, therefore, guilty. Juror 9
(Joseph Sweeny) proves this to not be true after he remembered noticing indentations on the
witness s eyes which could only have been formed from wearing eyeglasses. He then proved that
the woman could not have seen the murder take place from such a far distance at night due to
her impaired vision. Since the woman failed to mention her poor vision in trial, her credibility
became in question, and it was proven that the woman could not have seen the murder take place.
Juror 4 understood the logic in Juror 9 s argument, and changed his plea after all logical facts had
been disproven. Logic was the single influencer in the plea of Juror 4, but that was not the case for

Sostratus Lighthouse
The most outstanding was the creation of Sostratus from Cnidus (III century BC) a sea lighthouse
on the island of Pharos near Alexandria, which was considered one of the Seven Wonders of the
World (it has not survived to our time). It is a three tier tower 120 m high: its base was square, the
middle tier had the shape of an octagon, and the upper tier was a round structure with statues that
adorned it. At the top of the lighthouse, equipped with metal mirrors, the fire was constantly
maintained. The lighthouse served as both an observation post and a fortress. The nature of the
planning of Hellenistic cities was distinguished by strict order. The straightforwardness of the

In order to protect the Hellenistic cities not only had powerful fortifications, but were sometimes
divided into quarters, with their own defensive walls. Sometimes for the safety of the rural
population cities were filled with an additional many kilometer ring of fortress walls. The
acropolis was usually located on the hills, providing the possibility of defense, as in Priene. The
building materials were used basically the same as in the classical era marble, limestone, wood, raw

construction essence of the structure began to push aside the architectural and artistic image of the

monuments began to influence more emotionally and powerfully on greater number of people.

Narrative Essay On A Carnival Dream
The memorable mornings of waking up on a rocking ship in the vast ocean cannot be properly
described without experiencing it first. When I look off the balcony of our ship and see rolling
waves of deep blue water, I imagine the strange and wonderful creatures of the ocean. The miles
and miles straight down into the abyss can only be imagined, yet can never be understood or
fathomed by the mind. While the ocean is incredible, so many other things are happening around
you on the cruise ship. My family has made so many unimaginable memories on our superb
vacations. While the thought of being in the middle of the ocean and going to foreign countries
excited me, I was nervous at the same time. The summer of 2015 changed my life. My family
journeyed to New Orleans amid the horribly humid summer heat. My parents, my brother, and I
had never been on a cruise before, but we had heard so many great things and were expecting
just that. We arrived the night before the cruise and had previously decided to spend the night in
New Orleans. We did not want to risk being late and missing our awaited trip. The next morning
we drove the streets of New Orleans and discovered the port where we would soon board the boat.
We were finally ready to board the expansive CarnivalDream! After working our way through
lengthy health forms, metal detectors, and other forms of security, we claimed our spot on the shipat

The Evil of 1889
I could hear the water running from the shower when I came in the front door. That s strange, I
said. I dropped my keys and my yellow Star of David on top of the fridge and headed up the
stairs. The bathroom door was ajar a few inches and water was streaming out. As my fingers
reached out to push the door open the small hairs on my back stood to attention. It was too late;
the masculine hand was already on me. I endeavored to pull the hand away from my blanch face,
but I had already sank into his arms. It was cold. I woke up trying to free myself from the metal
brace. I screamed for help merely hearing an echo from the damp air. I searched in the darkness
for a way out, when all of a sudden a flash of light appeared. I tried to find the source when a
familiar voice called out, Are you comfortable, Leah? Would you like something to eat? Who are
you? What do you want from me? What an incorrect reply. Let me rephrase that. I didn t kidnap
you but I just borrowed you. In shock I said, Borrow me! You can t borrow a human. Are you a
lunatic? Hahaha, young lady you should never call a noble man a lunatic. You should know of the
consequences. The light shut and a sound that resembled electricity was heard nearby. This time I
listened very closely. The sound kept getting louder and closer. Ahhhhhhhhh! My body was
twitching, my hair smelled burnt. I was in an electric chair. The light turned on again. Trying to lift
my head towards the light, the voice came back.

The police roles in today s society are to try to maintain the order as well as to control to keep the

police departments are facing from today s society are corruption, as well as danger on the job,
and most of all the use of deadly force. For the police when things start to happen and the police

Honesty within the agency it should be a goal for everyone involved in the corporation.
Another issue of racial and biased profiling is also a popular problem for law enforcement today.
The important thing for officers is to maintain a balance of justice and treat all citizens equally.
Of course this become an issue plenty of times when crimes start and the scapegoat of such
crime was a member of a small group, or vice, and the suspect is part of the small group.
Assuming the victim were African American in a predominantly White community, the example
is, the police just might find themselves attack as not working as much to find the criminal.
Looking at it from another standpoint, if the criminal were guess to be Black, the police may be
absolve for going out of their way to find him /her guilty. Now we all should know that race is
not the main or only issue when references to profiling, especially knowing about the 911 attacks
(September 11, 2001). Today, police officers have to proceed with caution in respect to religion,
and make additional efforts to display they are not attacking specific religious beliefs.
Now civil liability has become a consequential issue for police departments and their officers.

Management Function Controlling
Functions of management The functions of management uniquely describe managers jobs. The
most commonly cited functions of management are planning, organizing, leading, and controlling,
although some identify additional functions. The functions of management define the process of
management as distinct from accounting, finance, marketing, and other business functions. These
functions provide a useful way of classifying information about management, and most basic
management texts since the 1950s have been organized around a functional framework. Controlling

Management Control Strategies Managers can use one or a combination of three control strategies
or styles: market, bureaucracy and clan. Each serves a different purpose. External forces make up
market control. Without external forces to bring about needed control, managers can turn to
internal bureaucratic or clan control. The first relies primarily on budgets and rules. The second
relies on employees wanting to satisfy their social needs through feeling a valued part of the
business. Self control, sometimes called adhocracy control, is complementary to market,
bureaucratic and clan control. By training and encouraging individuals to take initiative in
addressing problems on their own, there can be a resulting sense of individual empowerment. This
empowerment plays out as self control. The self control then benefits the organization and increases
the sense of worth to the business in the individual.
Control can be done in, letВґs say, two ways. The company has to decide between the traditional
bureaucratic and contemporary decentralized approaches. There is the third way which is
hierarchical control, but I think this one is using with bureaucratic and thatВґs why we set these
two into one. These approaches represent different philosophies of controlling and generally
corporate culture. Traditional bureaucratic

The United States has been a refuge for many people from other countries since the early 1900 s.
Many Americans do not know the difference between a refugee, an asylum seeker, and an
immigrant. Over the years, different associations, agencies, official acts and laws have come into
existence to limit who can be awarded the title of refugee. Rules and regulations have become the
most confusing part of coming to the United Statesif a person is seeking refuge. This paper will
explore the history of the American refugee and the laws, regulations, and associations that aide or

What is the Difference between a Refugee, and Asylum Seeker, and an Immigrant?
In the United States, a refugee is defined as a person that is outside of the United States and is
seeking refuge from persecution based on their race, nationality, religious beliefs, social group or
political opinion. Refugees can be excluded from being awarded refugee status for polygamy,
health related issues, moral and criminal and security grounds. They could also be excluded for

Definition of osmosis: The diffusion of water across a selectively permeable membrane from high
to low concentrations
Hypothesis: If I place an egg in vinegar, then the outer layer of the egg is going to become slimy
and look like rubber. It will also become larger and bubbles will form on and around the egg.
Hypothesis: If I place an egg in corn syrup, then the egg will become small and the outer layer will
not look like rubber any longer.
Day one:
Date started: 8/6
Volume: 2 oz. pH of acetic acid: 2.4
Day two
The egg shell completely disappears due to the vinegar reacting with the egg; bubbles form on the
surface of the vinegar and on the egg because carbon dioxide was produced from ... Show more

This is also known as a hypertonic solution which explains why the egg will decrease in size. Corn
syrup is a hypertonic liquid because it is very concentrated with not much water compared to the
egg unlike water which is hypotonic because it contains more water than the egg. In this solution,
the solute remains the egg, and the solvent is changed to corn syrup. Osmosis still plays an action
because water is still passing through the membrane from high to low concentrations.
Hypothesis: If the egg is placed into water, then it will increase in size since water is a hypotonic
liquid because it contains more water than the egg.
Day Five
Egg volume: 4oz.
Remaining water: 6oz.
Conclusion:
Osmosis took place in the egg under a variety of conditions because the membrane of the egg has
tiny openings where water can pass through from high to low concentrations. On day one, it was a
hypotonic solution because the higher concentration of water in the vinegar moved to the smaller
concentration in the egg. This means the egg was filled with water, which resulted in the eggs
increase in size. On day three, the hypotonic solution occurred because the corn syrup had a lower
concentration of water than the egg. That means the egg released water into the corn syrup, which
resulted in the eggs decrease in size. On day four, the egg was placed in water which resulted in an
isotonic solution where the concentrations become even. This

According to the Centers for Disease control and prevention, analysts estimate that around

Linda Papa said that while we can conduct many blood tests for other parts of the body such as
the kidneys, the heart and the liver, we have never found a reliable blood test for TBIs. With this
new system, everything could be changed. People could be tested on the field instead of having
to visit the doctor, and with its 94 percent accuracy, it makes sense to use it. When Papa and her
medical team conducted CT scans on 152 children and compared the results to a blood test, they
learned that the blood test could still accurately identify the areas that a patient had experienced
a TBI. In addition, blood testing also gave doctors an idea about the severity of the person s TBI.
Despite these findings, the study did have its limitations. For example, researchers still need to
test the results on a larger group of children to be certain. Should researchers uncover a method of
taking the guess work out of diagnosis s, it would revolutionize the manner that we test for
concussions on the game field. However, researchers want to continue with the studies on this new
technology to make sure that it works. After they have discovered the results on a larger scale,
they suspect that blood testing for concussions will be available over the next five year

Stories Came to Earth, Anansi s goal was to achieve the stories from the sky god, Nyame. Anansi
went through a series of challenges with the help of his wife, Aso, but eventually achieved the
goal of getting the stories, it says in the story, And so, child, stories came to Earth because of the
great cunning of Kwaku Anansi, and his wife, Aso.....Everywhere you look, they spin their webs
for all to see. Benefiting society by giving knowledge to everyone. While Master cat is only
benefiting himself and his master, Marquis de Carabas, by tricking the king into

Analysis Of The Short Story Ennis And Jack
In the short story, Ennis and Jack are both described as rough mannered, rough spoken, and
inured to the stoic life (Proulx 1). Ennis had a high arched nose and narrow face, was scruffy, had a
caved chest, a small torso and caliper legs, possessed a muscular body and supple body made for
the horse and fighting (Proulx 3). He was a high school dropoutand grew up having much of
nothing after his parents died when he was just a young boy (Proulx 2). The death of his parents
forced him to grow up at a young age. At the age of 19, he had a difficult time finding work and it
wasn t until he came to Brokeback Mountainthat he found a summer job. This was also where he
met Jack who had come from a similar background. Jack had curly hair and a quick laugh, but
carried weight in the haunch and his smile showed his buckteeth. He loved the rodeo life. His
boots were worn to the quick and holed beyond repair (Proulx 3). Jack too was a high school
dropout and was looking for summer work and came back to Brokeback Mountainfor the second
year. Not only did they come from the same background, but they also began to share the same
love for each other. It wasn t until Ennis and Jack were on the mountain alone and together that
they discovered this love for each other. Although only a small detail and most times overlooked,
there is a passage that says, During the day Ennis looked across a great gulf and sometimes saw
Jack, a small dot moving across a high meadow as an insect moves

Life And Death Among The Xerox People Summary
An analysis of Cabral s Life and Death Among the Xerox People: Progression of Technology and
Mechanized Life
Olga Cabral s, Life and Death Among the Xerox People is an extended metaphor aiming to make
relevant the effects of technological progress in society. Cabral asserts a new perspective for the
audience, using the title as a connection between xerox (a copying process) and the people in the
poem. Historically, the Xerox corporation began in the 1960s and has had success in progressing
their copy machine and being a role model to other companies by introducing diversified labor. The
scheme of the poem, however, unfolds through a comparison to the death penalty. In the 1960s, the
death penalty became a topic worthy of discussion, as people began questioning the government s
role in deciding the rights of citizens. Olga Cabral references both of these civil movement
components throughout the poem, Life and Death Among the Xerox People , to portray how
society may seem to be progressing through technology, but in fact, is making its way back down
the timeline of societal progression, step by step.
The hierarchy Cabral describes in the poem tends to see the workers, but not as people.
Immediately as it begins, the audience gets an insight of the wrong office (1) being described
when Cabral writes, not a soul knew me / but they said: Sit Down (3 4). The authority developed
by the word they concentrates on a grouping of administration that directs the speaker s

The Death Of A Man s Obedience
Obedience You have to make choices whether to follow the rules of not. To be obedient means to
comply with an order, request, or submission to another s authority. This authority has the power
to make an individual obey in ways that go against their personal and moral values. Because of
this the authority can make individuals commit terrible acts without question. An example of this
can be the abhorrent and inhumane acts carried out by German soldiers in WWII. All the German
troops orders were from one single individual, Adolf Hitler. Why is it that man is so prone to obey
and why is it hard for him to contravene? The reason for man s obedience is a mixture of social
influences, authorityfigures, and their own self conscience. A person s obedience can be derived
from social pressure and group minds. Most all people live their lives in groups such as with
family, work groups, school peers, political groups, etc. Also most people want to belong to a
group and can t stand being unaccompanied. We are group animals and tend to think as the group
thinks which makes it hard for an individual to maintain their own opinions. According to
Lessing, People who have experienced a lot of groups, who have observed their own behavior,
may agree that the hardest thing in the world is to stand out against one s group, a group of one s
peers. Many agree that among our most shameful memories is this, how often we said black was
white because other people were saying it (653). A person s

Judith And Holofernes By Artemisia Gentileschi
Throughout the years artists have chosen to portray the same event in the forms of paintings or
sculptures, but often, due to the time period and views or values of the artist the interpretations
differ and the final products are vastly different. Two primary examples of this are Caravaggio and
Gentileschi who are both renowned artists of the Baroqueera and style, which encompasses the
intensity of the colors, as well as the brutal subject matter that it entails.
Figures 17.9 Judith and Holofernes (c. 1598), by Caravaggio and figure 17.10 Judith Decapitating
Holofernes (c. 1620) by Artemisia Gentileschi both illustrate the same biblical story of Judith
seducing Holofernes and decapitating him to free the people of his oppressive rule. Caravaggio
and Gentileschi pick the precise moment of the decapitation and capture it with brutal realism.
These pieces when glanced at have a similar resemblance, but when one looks more deeply their
differences are put on display. The most apparent and most important difference that changes these
pieces entirely is the way the two artists choose to depict the nature of Judith. ... Show more content

Judith takes ahold of Holofernes head and begins to slice but her expression is one of
uncertainty and repulsiveness as she is standing away from the body. The maid stands besides her
anxiously awaiting for the act to be completed. In Caravaggio painting Judith is portrayed as
young and beautiful as well as more fragile and timid. Caravaggio uses an amplified chiaroscuro
called tenebrism. In his painting there is a dramatic contrast between a somewhat toned down light
and an intense dark. In his painting the darker shades are concentrated on Holofernes and the maid.
The light is casted upon Judith, which may be more of a use of symbolism of the heroines and
virtue of a young and beautiful

Edmund Blunden s Undertones Of War
Undertones of War; was written by Edmund Blunden. Edmund Blunden (1896 1974) Edmund was
conceived on 1 November 1896 in London, brought up in Kent and taught first at Christ s Hospital,
where he found an ability for calligraphy, and after that at The Queen s College. In August 1915, in
the midst of World War I (1914 1918), Blunden was charged as a minute lieutenant into the British
Armys Royal Sussex Regiment. He was exhibited on the eleventh Battalion , Royal Sussex
Regiment, a Kitchener s Army unit that surrounded bit of the 116th Brigade of the 39th
Division in May 1916, two months after the power s entrance in France. He gave the power on
the Western Front straight up to the complete of the war, sharing in the exercises at Ypres and
the Somme, followed in 1917 by the Battle of Passchendaele, and getting the Military Cross all
the while. Blunden survived almost two years in the forefront without physical damage (in spite
of being gassed in October 1917), in any case, for whatever is left of his life, he bore mental scars
from his experiences. With trademark self censure he ascribed his survival to his small size,
which made a subtle target . His own record of his as often as possible horrible encounters was
distributed in 1928, as Undertones of War. Undertones of War is a 1928 diary by Edmund Blunden
,
in light of his encounters in France and Belgium from late 1915 to mid 1918; the target group is for
those to comprehend his experience through the war and after. It

The Market Street Railway And San Francisco
The Market Street Railway, Sutter Street Railroad, and the San Francisco San Mateo Railway
merged in 1902 to become the United Railroads of San Francisco (URR). The URR was created
by the aggressive capitalist consolidator and modernizer named Patrick Calhoun. An early project
was to make uniform the rolling stock and track gauges, which led to the abandonment of the last
four miles of horsecars that had been the backbone of transportation just a generation earlier. By
this stage, the company had changed hands again. Over the years many independent lines had
been absorbed, including the Clay Street Hill Railroad, the Presidio Ferries Railway, and the
Ferries and Cliff House Railway. At 5:12 am on April 18, 1906, the great San Francisco

Chiari Research Paper
Throughout researching Chiari, I have learned that Chiari is not only rare, but research is limited.
In my essay I have defined key components of Chiari and it affects. I looked at who has chiari,
why they have it and how they cope with it. Chiarians around the world have come together to find
find a cure and I believe that with further research and investigation, not only a cure can be found
but also a diagnostic test. The history of Chiari goes back all the way to the 17th century. That s
when reports were first published of hindbrain herniation. Hindbrain herniation had only been seen
in the presence of patients with myelomeningoceles. According to The Chiari Malformations,
Hindbrain herniation was found alone in 1881 by Langhans. 10 years... Show more content on

Hydrocephalus is when CSF (cerebrospinal fluid) builds up in the brain, causing increased
pressure in the brain. The pressure can cause mental defects and possibly a misshapen skull.
Hydrocephalus can occur with any other type of Chiari but it is most often seen with Type II.
Severe Hydrocephalus can be fatal if left untreated. Spina Bifida occurs when the spinal cord is
either incomplete or underdeveloped. Spina Bifida is most commonly associated with Type II.
Syringomyelia is a buildup of CSF, which forms a synix, or a fluid cavity. The growing synix
destroys the spinal cord which results in pain and weakness. Other symptoms include, stiffness in
the back and shoulders, and loss of extreme feelings of cold and hot. Tethered cord syndrome is
another syndrome related to Chiari.Tethered cord syndrome is the attachment of the spinal cord to
spine. This disorder can cause permanent damage to the lower bodies muscles and nerves. Spinal
curvature is commonly associated with type I Chiari. It is seen most commonly with children
whose spine is underdeveloped. According to Conquer Chiari, 60 70% of Chiarians struggle with
sleep apnea. A person with sleep apnea stops breathing in their sleep and then wakes up breathing
again. Decompression surgery decreases sleep apnea occurrences by 90%. According to The

My Dreams Of My Superpowers
Superpowers You can do anything that you set your mind to! This was a very common phrase
that my parents would say to me when my siblings and I were younger. Now at the age of 17 I
understand that it s supposed to inspire me to follow my dream. But that s not how the mind of
my five year old self translated it. At five years old I was more focused on playing with barbie
dolls and watching superhero movies. My favorite superhero was batman. He would always
make sure to save the day and get the bad guys. At five years old my dreams for my future were
nothing like they are now. They mostly revolved around having some type of special ability. I
wanted to have telekinesis which was no doubt inspired by watching Race to Witch Mountain.
Most of the movies that I watched at five years old had some type of main character who either
had a superpower or was a superhero. Most of my dreams were to be like them and have some
cool superpower that I could use. So when my parents kept telling me that I can do anything as
long as I try, I don t think they meant that I can have any superpower I want. Looking back on it
now, most of the time that my parents said that phrase was when I told them I couldn t do my
homework because it was too hard. They most likely meant for that saying to inspire me to work
hard and finish my homework. But at five years old I thought that if this phrase applies to
homework then why can t it apply to everything else, like gaining a superpower. My family and I

  • 2. How Does Hume Determine Human Existence David Hume s An Enquiry Concerning Human Understanding is a work which addresses and questions philosophical ideas through empirical epistemology. In this work, Hume focuses mainly on ideas of custom, causality, belief, and fiction. Not only, but Hume interconnects all of these, creating new ideas of perception, and asserts that although humans are reasonable creatures, there is no true reason as to why we should rely on causality to determine our actions. To illustrate, in Of the Origin of Ideas, Hume states, that during observation, rather than taking things as a they truly are, humans have a tendency to instead contort and alter their perceptions to work in their favor, and relate to them. For instance, Hume states, When we reflect on our past sentiments and affections, our thought is a faithful mirror, and copies ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... According to Hume, it is somewhat impossible to reach an idea of cause and effect. Take for instance, ...nor is it reasonable to conclude, merely because one event, in one instance, precedes another, that therefore the one is the cause, the other the effect. In other words, there is no reason to infer an existence from the appearance of another. Like stated prior, given the fact that perception is determined by past experience, Hume is correct in his statement. For instance, since perception is subjective, it is highly unreasonable to conclude causality. With all that said, Hume s philosophy can be applied to natural law. For example, natural laws are moral standards that govern human nature, based on the nature of the world. However, the ideas of natural laws were derived from instances of causality. With this in mind, it can be understood that not only is causality unreasonable, but also, in a way, is natural law. This, however, is not to say that natural law has no truth, but rather address the idea that both causality, as well as natural law are merely relative ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Forensic Use of Acid Phosphatase Tests People who watched crime based television shows understand that DNA evidence is not always noticeable at first glance. In fact, in some cases, it can be impossible to detect visually. Take semen, for example. In large amounts, seminal fluid is easy to detect. It leaves a noticeable crusty stain on most fabric. However, if that fabric is washed then the stain is gone. Presumably, the evidence is washed away. This is not the case necessarily. There are several methods forensic scientists use to find traces of semento identify a male s identity. The Acid Phosphatase Color Test is widely regarded as the most effective way to both locate and characterize a seminal stain. Acid Phosphatase is an enzyme found in seminal fluid. It comes from the prostate gland (Johnson 2009). Typically, the more Prostatic Acid Phosphatase found in a sample of semen is a sign of prostate cancer. This is important because the Acid Phosphatase Color Test was once used to determine of a male had prostate cancer. It was later replaced by Prostate Specific Antigen, aka PSA. Forensic scientists still use this test to identify semen, however. In 1938, Gutman and Gutman reported increased levels of acid phosphatase in patients with metastatic prostate cancer (Taira, Merrick, Wallner, and Dattoli, Reviving the Acid Phosphatase Test for Prostate Cancer ). It was later replaced by the Prostate Specific Antigen in 1971 (Taira, Merrick, Wallner, and Dattoli, Reviving the Acid Phosphatase Test ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Ethical Decision Making of a Nurse Essay Nurses are face with numerous ethical dilemmas each day and if theses ethical situation are not handled in a professional and ethical manner there can be severe consequences for both the nurse and the patient. When nurses are face with theses ethical dilemmas, they have a decision to make. Therefore, what does the nurse do when decision making involves ethical dilemmas? So, has a nursing student, I have chosen to put myself in the role of a health care provider such as a nurse. It was my first day of clinical rotation and the client that I was assigned to, was due for a bath. I was not comfortable giving the patient a bath a lone, so I ask for assistance from one of my colleagues. The client was a male who was shy and soft spoken.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The principle of autonomy states; individuals have the right to make choices about their own lives (Kozier et al, 2010.p.79). In health care, this means health care providers must honour the person s right to choose methods or approaches to diagnosis or treatment (Kozier et al, 2010). Moreover, by not giving the client, the right to make her own decision this could cause anxiety and physiological effect to both parties. Which disregard the World Health Organization (WHO), definition of quality end of life care as the active total care of patients whose disease is not responsive to curative treatment (SepГєlveda, Marlin, Yoshida, Ullrich, 2002). This definition includes meeting the psychological, social, and spiritual needs for both patients and families (SepГєlveda et al, 2002). In addition, the nurse did not put the beneficence principle in action, which is the obligation to do good (Kozier et al, 2010, p.80). Nurses have a duty to implement actions that benefit their client s best interest (Kozier et al, 2010). It lays the groundwork for trust that society places in nursing professional, and provides nursing s context and justification (Burkhardt Nathaniel, 2002). This principle seems straight forward, but it is actually very complex. Should we determine what is good by subjective, or by objective, means? So, when people disagree about what is good, whose opinion counts? In this case, the client, and not the family because she has the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Fossil Fuels Are A Non Renewable Source Of Energy 86% of the energy the USA uses comes from fossil fuels like petroleum and coal that provide electricity and gas to power our growing energy needs. Fossil fuels are a non renewable source of energy, meaning that we will eventually run out one day in the near future. When we drive our cars to work, taking long showers, and leaving the lights on, we usually don t realize how much of our resources we are using. Fossil Fuels, Power Plants and Fracking cause many of our environmental problems that the world faces today due to our growing dependence on energy. These environmental problems include global warming, air quality deterioration, oil spills, and acid rain. Saving and producing energy from a renewable resource such as sunlight not only helps to conserve our limited resources but also translates into happiness, safety for our environment, boundless energy, and a personal benefit, such as financial savings. During the 18th century, massive quantities of fossil fuels were used to power the economy let alone the world. MHI states that During the Industrial Revolution, fossil fuels seemed to be the ideal energy source because of its seemingly endless supply. Many machines during the Industrial Revolution such as the Steam locomotives, used coalas a form of energy which would fuel the machine early on to balance the lack of firewood and charcoal. In this article about fossil fuels, it states that we continued to use coal because there was a seemingly endless supply of coal ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Feudalism In Cinderella The French invaded the Rhineland, in what is now Germany, in 1792 during the French Revolution. During this time, the French invaders pillaged towns, raped women, and destroyed entire families. While the French believed that they were liberating the Germans from the yoke of feudalism, (Large 629) they were really creating a bitter enemy of the German people who found unity in hating anything French. This new found zealotry was exemplified during the Romanticism period by writers such as the Grimm brothers. They believed that writing down these folk tales was a way of accurately representing their German culture. Due to this deep seeded belief, they allude to the French invaders of Germanyin Cinderellathrough the use of the evil stepsisters who invade Cinderella s home. When the stepsisters arrive, Cinderella is forced to work from dusk to dawn in her own house, but she is able to maintain her kindness. This image created through Cinderella s struggle can be compared to that of the German people. The portrayal of the evil stepsisters as France, Cinderella as Germany, and the Dove as the Holy Trinity, shows that the Grimm s version of Cinderella acts not only as a story to entertain audiences but as a way to represent the German s struggles against the French occupation of the Rhineland. The stepsisters that intruded into Cinderella s home are unmistakable allusions toward the French invaders of 1792. The Grimm s used some of the essential elements of nationalism when ... • 8. Reaction Between Hydrochloric Acid And Sodium Tiosulfate Reaction Order and Rate Laws Glenna Hoefs December 26, 2017 Abstract This report discusses a laboratory procedure to study the effect of reactant concentration on the rate of the reaction between hydrochloric acid and sodium thiosulfate, with the aim of determining the order of each reactant and the rate law for the reaction. For this experiment, the reactants were added to a well plate in varying concentrations. The reaction was timed by using a stopwatch and observing the production of a precipitate. The data collected during this procedure was then analyzed to determine the reaction order for each reactant as well at the rate law for the reaction. The hydrochloric acid was determined to have a reaction order of 0, while the sodium thiosulfate was determined to have a reaction order of 1. The reaction between hydrochloric acid and sodium thiosulfate was determined to be first order with respect to N2S2O3. The k constant for this reaction was calculated to be 0.1 1/s. We conclude that the concentration of hydrochloric acid does not have an effect on the rate of the reaction. The concentration of sodium thiosulfate, however, is directly proportional to the rate of the reaction. Dj Kol Herc Research Paper Clive Campbell, better known by his stage name DJ Kool Herc, is a Jamaican American DJ who often threw block parties in the early 1970 s in one of the most impoverished areas of New York City, the South Bronx . At these party s Herc created rhythmic beats by looping the breaks in songs. Later these same beats would be accompanied by rap , a rhythmic style of chanting poetry which is often presented in 16 bar measures or time frames (Thompson). Herc is often regarded as the father of hip hop musicbecause what started out as just block party music turned into a cultural movement for many young African American youths. The music in different eras represents a sort of time machine into what ideas and problems are wrong with society, thus bringing them to the attention of the masses and getting them solved. As a result, Consol is diversified and strategically projected against the risk of downturn in either profit stream. Coal Industry The coal industry has a gloomy economic forecast going forward. The U.S. Environment Protection Agency s new Clean Power Plan (a part of the Clean Air Act) causes much uncertainty for corporations like Consol. It was proposed by the EPA in June of 2014. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Prices for coal are currently down. This drop has coincided with the drop in oil prices. Originally, it was expected that these two prices would be tied together, and that the drop would be quite temporary. However, the longer that coal has been down, the more likely it looks like it is down for the count so to speak. Many analysts believe that there has been an over production of coal in the past decade and the market has been saturated as a result. With every passing month that coal s prices stay low, and the supplies keep growing, it becomes less likely that things will turn around for the better in a permanent manner. Even with the rest of the world playing catchup with the transition to zero carbon intensive energy sources, the U.S. coal exports have been extremely low. China, for instance, has imported less in recent years. At one point, they were helping to drive our export market. In response to the lower demand, many mining corporations have begun to optimize their operations. This has been done by focusing on lower mining production costs, cheaper transportation costs, and favorable exchange rates. The goal is to keep operations from further declining profit wise as the U.S. Energy Information Administration expects a 7% decrease in total coal consumption for the year 2015. Most ethnic groups tend to focus on themselves rather than taking into account the international issues that are occurring. With the advancement of society, these groups often stand by their morals instead of trying to engage in new ones and accepting the worldwide conflicts. More often than not, ethnic groups are discriminated against even after the rise of the concept All men are created equal (The Declaration of Independence). Yet, this idea is neglected especially in regards to social status and race. These people have different intentions and repeatedly are being encouraged to blend into American society and leave their values behind. In the past, equality and individual rights were portrayed in an extremely different matter which impacted people s views on freedom today. In today s generation, converging viewpoints make it difficult for an individual to speak their own mind without prejudice. During this stage, children s pleasure focuses primarily on the mouth with chewing and biting as the main sources of stimulation. Too much or too little satisfaction at this stage may cause the children to smoke or eat often as an adult. Next, children go through the anal stagefrom age one year and six months until age three. During this stage, pleasure stems mainly from bathroom activities as children deal with their want for power. In adulthood, anal fixation may cause anal retention or an extreme need for cleanliness. Advantages And Disadvantages Of Positive Displacement Pumps By allowing fluid to flow into closed cavity from a source with low pressure, trapping the fluid and then force it into a receiver which is high pressure by decreasing the volume of cavity is the positive displacement pumps work. P.D. pumps have their own advantages and disadvantages but there are a few pros and cons of these pumps that are similar to each other. Advantages of P.D. pumps A highly viscous fluid can be easily handled by a couple rotary technologies and air operated piston pumps. In centrifugal pumps their flow rate and efficiency start to drop above 500 SSU. This is due to high friction losses in centrifugal pump. However in rotary pump, the flow and efficiency will typically increase with viscosity. In addition, fluids with viscosities more than several millions SSU can ... Inherently, positive displacement pumps necessarily need safety or pressure relief pumps because the principle of operation does not include a pressure restriction. However, it is only possible using complex mass balancing in oscillating positive displacement pumps vibration free operation. Besides that, compare to centrifugal pumps, positive displacement pumps which are oscillated are less suitable for high speeds. It is also a requirement to have a pulsating flow as when the positive displacement pumps oscillate, it is a pulsation dampener. The disadvantage in more complicated and complex designs is there are fault prone constructions with valves that will cause it the stop working at some point. Other than that, in an oscillating positive displacement pumps, there will be a larger number of wear parts if it is compared with centrifugal pump. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This is also known as a hypertonic solution which explains why the egg will decrease in size. Corn syrup is a hypertonic liquid because it is very concentrated with not much water compared to the egg unlike water which is hypotonic because it contains more water than the egg. In this solution, the solute remains the egg, and the solvent is changed to corn syrup. Osmosis still plays an action because water is still passing through the membrane from high to low concentrations. Hypothesis: If the egg is placed into water, then it will increase in size since water is a hypotonic liquid because it contains more water than the egg. Day Five Egg volume: 4oz. Remaining water: 6oz. Conclusion: Osmosis took place in the egg under a variety of conditions because the membrane of the egg has tiny openings where water can pass through from high to low concentrations. On day one, it was a hypotonic solution because the higher concentration of water in the vinegar moved to the smaller concentration in the egg. This means the egg was filled with water, which resulted in the eggs increase in size. • 36. Blood Test If a simple blood test could accurately diagnose a blood concussion, researchers hope that it will one day be used on the field with trainers, coaches and parents for developing a plan of action. According to the Centers for Disease control and prevention, analysts estimate that around 1,000,000 children have to be treated in hospitals for traumatic brain injury because of playing sports. Right now, they diagnose concussions based on the symptoms of one. For example, they might have blurred vision, feel groggy, a headache, a balancing problem or vomiting. Nevertheless, the problem is that it does not allow for doctors to diagnose the severity of a brain injury accurately. Giving a child a computed tomography scan can offer a better look at... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Linda Papa said that while we can conduct many blood tests for other parts of the body such as the kidneys, the heart and the liver, we have never found a reliable blood test for TBIs. With this new system, everything could be changed. People could be tested on the field instead of having to visit the doctor, and with its 94 percent accuracy, it makes sense to use it. When Papa and her medical team conducted CT scans on 152 children and compared the results to a blood test, they learned that the blood test could still accurately identify the areas that a patient had experienced a TBI. In addition, blood testing also gave doctors an idea about the severity of the person s TBI. Despite these findings, the study did have its limitations. For example, researchers still need to test the results on a larger group of children to be certain. Should researchers uncover a method of taking the guess work out of diagnosis s, it would revolutionize the manner that we test for concussions on the game field. However, researchers want to continue with the studies on this new technology to make sure that it works. After they have discovered the results on a larger scale, they suspect that blood testing for concussions will be available over the next five year ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 39. Analysis Of The Short Story Ennis And Jack In the short story, Ennis and Jack are both described as rough mannered, rough spoken, and inured to the stoic life (Proulx 1). Ennis had a high arched nose and narrow face, was scruffy, had a caved chest, a small torso and caliper legs, possessed a muscular body and supple body made for the horse and fighting (Proulx 3). He was a high school dropoutand grew up having much of nothing after his parents died when he was just a young boy (Proulx 2). The death of his parents forced him to grow up at a young age. At the age of 19, he had a difficult time finding work and it wasn t until he came to Brokeback Mountainthat he found a summer job. He loved the rodeo life. His boots were worn to the quick and holed beyond repair (Proulx 3). Jack too was a high school dropout and was looking for summer work and came back to Brokeback Mountainfor the second year. • 40. Life And Death Among The Xerox People Summary An analysis of Cabral s Life and Death Among the Xerox People: Progression of Technology and Mechanized Life Olga Cabral s, Life and Death Among the Xerox People is an extended metaphor aiming to make relevant the effects of technological progress in society. Cabral asserts a new perspective for the audience, using the title as a connection between xerox (a copying process) and the people in the poem. Historically, the Xerox corporation began in the 1960s and has had success in progressing their copy machine and being a role model to other companies by introducing diversified labor. The scheme of the poem, however, unfolds through a comparison to the death penalty. In the 1960s, the death penalty became a topic worthy of discussion, as people began questioning the government s role in deciding the rights of citizens. Olga Cabral references both of these civil movement components throughout the poem, Life and Death Among the Xerox People , to portray how society may seem to be progressing through technology, but in fact, is making its way back down the timeline of societal progression, step by step. The hierarchy Cabral describes in the poem tends to see the workers, but not as people. Immediately as it begins, the audience gets an insight of the wrong office (1) being described when Cabral writes, not a soul knew me / but they said: Sit Down (3 4). The authority developed by the word they concentrates on a grouping of administration that directs the speaker s ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 42. The Death Of A Man s Obedience Obedience You have to make choices whether to follow the rules of not. To be obedient means to comply with an order, request, or submission to another s authority. This authority has the power to make an individual obey in ways that go against their personal and moral values. Because of this the authority can make individuals commit terrible acts without question. An example of this can be the abhorrent and inhumane acts carried out by German soldiers in WWII. All the German troops orders were from one single individual, Adolf Hitler. Why is it that man is so prone to obey and why is it hard for him to contravene? The reason for man s obedience is a mixture of social influences, authorityfigures, and their own self conscience. A person s obedience can be derived from social pressure and group minds. Most all people live their lives in groups such as with family, work groups, school peers, political groups, etc. Also most people want to belong to a group and can t stand being unaccompanied. We are group animals and tend to think as the group thinks which makes it hard for an individual to maintain their own opinions. According to Lessing, People who have experienced a lot of groups, who have observed their own behavior, may agree that the hardest thing in the world is to stand out against one s group, a group of one s peers. Many agree that among our most shameful memories is this, how often we said black was white because other people were saying it (653). A person s ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 43. Judith And Holofernes By Artemisia Gentileschi Throughout the years artists have chosen to portray the same event in the forms of paintings or sculptures, but often, due to the time period and views or values of the artist the interpretations differ and the final products are vastly different. Two primary examples of this are Caravaggio and Gentileschi who are both renowned artists of the Baroqueera and style, which encompasses the intensity of the colors, as well as the brutal subject matter that it entails. Figures 17.9 Judith and Holofernes (c. 1598), by Caravaggio and figure 17.10 Judith Decapitating Holofernes (c. 1620) by Artemisia Gentileschi both illustrate the same biblical story of Judith seducing Holofernes and decapitating him to free the people of his oppressive rule. Caravaggio and Gentileschi pick the precise moment of the decapitation and capture it with brutal realism. These pieces when glanced at have a similar resemblance, but when one looks more deeply their differences are put on display. The most apparent and most important difference that changes these pieces entirely is the way the two artists choose to depict the nature of Judith. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Judith takes ahold of Holofernes head and begins to slice but her expression is one of uncertainty and repulsiveness as she is standing away from the body. The maid stands besides her anxiously awaiting for the act to be completed. In Caravaggio painting Judith is portrayed as young and beautiful as well as more fragile and timid. Caravaggio uses an amplified chiaroscuro called tenebrism. In his painting there is a dramatic contrast between a somewhat toned down light and an intense dark. In his painting the darker shades are concentrated on Holofernes and the maid. The light is casted upon Judith, which may be more of a use of symbolism of the heroines and virtue of a young and beautiful ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 47. My Dreams Of My Superpowers Superpowers You can do anything that you set your mind to! This was a very common phrase that my parents would say to me when my siblings and I were younger. Now at the age of 17 I understand that it s supposed to inspire me to follow my dream. But that s not how the mind of my five year old self translated it. At five years old I was more focused on playing with barbie dolls and watching superhero movies. My favorite superhero was batman. He would always make sure to save the day and get the bad guys. At five years old my dreams for my future were nothing like they are now. They mostly revolved around having some type of special ability. I wanted to have telekinesis which was no doubt inspired by watching Race to Witch Mountain. Most of the movies that I watched at five years old had some type of main character who either had a superpower or was a superhero. Most of my dreams were to be like them and have some cool superpower that I could use. So when my parents kept telling me that I can do anything as long as I try, I don t think they meant that I can have any superpower I want. Looking back on it now, most of the time that my parents said that phrase was when I told them I couldn t do my homework because it was too hard. They most likely meant for that saying to inspire me to work hard and finish my homework. But at five years old I thought that if this phrase applies to homework then why can t it apply to everything else, like gaining a superpower. My family and I ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
