United Parcel Service Mission Statement
What does your company stand for? What is it s purpose? The common answer today is to make
money. That is not always the the case because many companies stand for something much greater. Do
not make the mistake of thinking that making money is not important, it is a key piece in maintaining
the original purpose and longevity of any company. The purpose that I mentioned is typically defined
by a statement or phrase that defines the vision of a company, and is better known as the mission
statement. The mission statement is established by the strategic leadership of a company it involves
creating a vision, developing strategies and empowering individuals throughout the organization to put
those strategies in action (Parnell, 2008, p.251). This ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Essay on The New Identity of Exodus as a Myth
The New Identity of Exodus as a Myth
The story of the tooth fairy has become a part of the cultural tradition of generations. Many American
children discover the legend of the tooth fairy at an early age. Furthermore, this mythical tale explains
the meaning behind children losing their baby teeth. It marks a rite of passage between infancy and
early childhood. In the strictest sense of the definition of a myth, however, the tooth fairy does not
qualify as a mythical story. It does not have all of the essential traits. So what precisely is a myth? The
Greek word for myth is mythos , meaning story. According to Dr. Dennis Doyle, A myth is a story that
expresses the root meanings and values of a culture. Although it may seem ... Show more content on

Primordial myths distinguish the beginnings of the universe, and how it was created. Foundation
myths, on the other hand, relate the story of the origins of a people and their rituals (Doyle, 29 Aug.
2002). Therefore, the Exodus story is a foundation myth because it explains how the ancient Hebrew
community established its roots. An authentic foundation myth also serves basic functions. The
religious function of a myth explains how the people of the universe will worship and what they will
fear. The question of how the society and culture will be structured is answered in the social function.
The psychological function of a myth establishes how and why the society behaves in the ways that it
does. Finally, the historical perspective of a myth provides background knowledge to increase in a
myth s credibility. When all of these factors are combined, one attains a better understanding of a
myth (Doyle, 29 Aug. 2002).
The religious function of the Exodus story introduces the major characters that play a role in this
myth. Moses, a descendant from a long line of Israelites, becomes the main character in determining
the fate of the Israelites in Egypt. He first experiences the voice and wisdom of God in the form of a
burning bush (Ex. 3:3). While in the physical form of a fire, the Lord instructs Moses to rescue them
(the Israelites) from the hands of the Egyptians and lead them out of that land into a good and spacious
land, a land flowing

RESEARCH PROJECT PROPOSAL TITLE OF THE PROJECT: DEVELOPMENT OF A MATH
LABORATORY AT THE PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT SCHOOL {PDS} PROJECT
SUMMARY This project is being developed for the purpose of funding a math laboratory to be set up
during the 2002 2003 school year where preservice (college students) will work with at risk K 5
students at the Professional Development School (PDS) at Jackson Elementary School. Professional

The simultaneous co product of this investigation is the potential to help at risk K 5 students develop
their mathematical communication skills and math efficacy (Nicholls, Cobb, Wood, amp; Yackel,
1990) through activity based experiences. Project Plan This research study will be completed with two
parallel studies. The first study will focus on the preservice teachers enrolled in a K 8 math methods
course at Elmhurst College, EDU330 Math for Elementary and Middle School Students. The second
study will focus on the K 5 elementary students at Jackson Elementary School participating in the
math lab sessions. Jackson Elementary School is partnering with the Education Department at
Elmhurst College to form a Professional Development School (PDS) and thus a collaborative
relationship as well as vacant instructional space that provides a unique opportunity for this project. In
sum, the research project has two guiding goals mathematical efficacy and communication. The first
goal is to discern the changes in math self efficacy in both the K 5 students and preservice teachers.
The second goal is to examine if the K 5 students and preservice teachers participating in a math lab,
which is centered on reflective activities and mathematics communication skills, improve as math
communicators. Preservice teacher growth and development in mathematical teaching efficacy

Meniscus Trauma
One of the most common injuries that can occur in a person s life is an injury to the meniscus. The
meniscus is a vital part of cartilage located between the bones of the knee. It helps with stability,
mobility and also cushions the knee. There are several menisci within the knee and this along with the
variety of motions and impacts that can occur to one s knee are what cause the likelihood of injury to
increase dramatically. The various types of tears require different kinds of rehabilitation. Some of
these tears may require surgery. By understanding the injury and different types of treatment options,
an injured person will have a better chance at a full recovery.
There are two menisci in the knee. The lateral meniscus is the one further ... Show more content on

The at home treatment, R.I.C.E., is recommended with minor tears. R.I.C.E is the acronym for rest,
ice, compress, and elevate. Rest means not to overuse the injured area; keep the knee mobile, but cut
down on its use. Ice means to ice the injured area for ten minutes and then ten minutes off several
times, and repeat this pattern three times a day; these numbers may change depending on your doctor.
Compression helps diminish swelling of the injured area. Keep the injured area firmly compressed
with a wrap or compression band and make sure it is not too tight because this will restrict blood flow
and slow the healing process. The tightness of the compress should limit expansion and not cause
severe compression. The knee should be elevated at least twice a day. Raise the injured area above the
heart. In the knee, this is easily done by lying down on your back and raising your leg. Anti
inflammatory medications such as ibuprophin, advil, motrin and naproxen may be recommended, but
ask your doctor before using any medications. For more serious tears, such as moderate to large tears
in the red zone , surgery will be a likely solution. This surgery is called a meniscectomy . This is
where the doctor will remove the entire injured meniscus. For tears that spread from the red zone to
the inner two thirds of the meniscus, surgery may not help. Another option is a partial meniscectomy.
This surgery is where only a part of the meniscus is removed. Talking with your doctor will be the
deciding factor. Decisions will be made based on the meniscus ability to heal as well as the patient s
age, health, and activity

Cause And Effects Of Imperialism In China
In times of sorrow, regret, loss, and depression a movement must begin. Whether it s between you and
yourself or a nation of people. After the loss of people during the Great Depression, people and leaders
were forced to expand their economy in order to rebuild. Which became a revolution in itself, some
were faster and adapting to create a new government for themselves. Others went through challenging
times in order to create a sufficient government to last and stay true to their self s overtime. China was
slow to develop. Their system was independent in tradition and Confucius beliefs that didn t keep up
with the industrial age that was developing in other countries. The imperialistic era was not a
comforting era that conformed with independent nations. China experienced a lot of loss and rebellion
in order to re develop their nation during this time. However, Japan adapted quickly and took over
territories near and allied with other powerful nations to embark on their communistic revolution.
China had friendly relations but the reliance and trust was not beneficial. For a period of time during
imperialism, Great Britain allied with China for free trade regulations. China was in agreeance and
Britain traded Indian opium which caused drug addiction in China. China tried to stop the drug trade
and Britain came with force. The British used their victory to create the unequal treaty system, which
completely turned the tables on China (197). The First Opium War, turned China

Childhood Depression
Childhood depressive disorder often goes unnoticed and is misdiagnosed because of lack of
knowledge. This paper is an informative one that is meant to educate its readers on signs and
symptoms of such a disorder. I will also be writing about the treatments for Childhood depressive
disorder. There are therapies and prescribed medicines that help children who are depressed get
through their daily lives. I took an interest in this disorder because childhood is supposed to be the
most stress free, happy time is someone s life but for some children it is not. I m curious to know what
could cause a child to so unhappy. As a mother I want to be aware of the signs and symptoms of the
disorder because if ever my own child or a child close me ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is because the thoughts of a child who is depressed are negative and demeaning. Though the
child may be nice looking or smart, he or she won t see what everyone around them sees. If the child
is given a gift or an opportunity, he or she will view it as luck and only focus on the reasons why he or
she didn t deserve it. Depression causes one s thinking process to be completely distorted and the
world around them has nothing but negative things to offer. The social effects of Childhood
Depressive Disorder are that the child doesn t make friends. He or she does not feel a sense of
belonging amongst his or her peers. Sometimes the child doesn t even want to belong with anyone
they come in contact with. They set themselves aside from the rest of the world and could care less
about the people or things around them. Because of the nonchalant attitude of the depressed child,
family and friends often suffer also because they feel a severe disconnect from their loved one.
Marriages sometimes suffer if the husband and wife cannot deal with the attention the child requires.
Because of all the focus being put on the child others in the family, such as siblings and spouse, are
neglected. When the siblings of the child who is depressed are neglected, this can sometimes send
them into a downward spiral of jealousy

Gun Control and Self Protection Essay
Gun control is probably one of the most debatable concerns in the constitution. There are many
scenarios in which you can see the good in pro gun control and also other scenarios where con gun
control is good. Gun control should not be a plan the U.S government should take because there are
many cases in which a firearm will determine you from death or life. And the right to carry a firearm
is like the right to protect our freedom, and to self defend ourselves. Firearms are used defensively
roughly 2.5 million times per year, more than four times as many as criminal uses. This amounts to
2,575 lives protected for every life lost to a gun. (SAF) The people that are most concerned by this
issue are those that have lost someone close to them ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Firearms are your defense from criminals. If we are not to have our 2nd amendment our crime rates
will increase because criminals will invade houses more freely because they know that that citizen
doesn t have a firearm or another words protection .Also new types of crimes will probably be created
such as home invasion robberies or car hackings. Not only that but a rise in intimidation where
criminals will intimidate people to give up their valuables so they can avoid being injured by the
criminal. Also if we are not to have firearms the 5,285 children will be alive but our nation will be
enduring more violence then it already is enduring. If we are to keep our 2nd amendment we will have
better chances of surviving in a situation in which we are attacked or aggravated by a criminal. If we
are to call 9 1 1 when we are getting aggravated the police would take longer than if we had a firearm
and protected ourselves. The fastest growing group of gun owners is women. (SAF) This is probably
because 232,960 women in the U.S. were raped or sexually assaulted in 2006. That s more than 600
women every day. These were only the cases that were reported to the police. (NOW) Even though
these statistics are hard to believe there is still a women that thinks, ...I don t believe gun owners have
right. (Brady) Without guns there would probably be double rape cases then what there is now. Also a
firearm is usually only given to citizens that are responsible because that is were

Animal rights
Animals with rights must be treated as ends in themselves, they should not be treated by others as
means to achieve their ends. (Francione) An idea opposing to Immanuel Kant s beliefs. Animals are
apart of the moral community, their intrinsic worth justifies this, and causes for certain rights to be
established to uphold their worth within the community. To not respect the welfare of nonhuman
animals, and to provide special treatment for humans, goes against Peter Singer s ideas for a
harmonious community, and instead showcases speciesism. The established thought that has been
shown through the ages that certain races are more superb than others is the continuous downfall of
nations and inhibits progression. There is much disagreement ... Show more content on

435, Rachels)
This thought of treating animals with respect as we do humans, seems to be exaggerated in Rachels
article. It s not that the article is exaggerated people s viewpoints, it is just in general that people really
do feel this way when it comes to accepting animals into the moral society. It doesn t have to be to that
extreme, it just goes back to the simple rule treat others as you want to be treated . Human s don t need
to go above and beyond in living side by side with animals, there s just small things that could be
done, and thoughts that could be eliminated to help the nation move forward, as Gandhi said, the
greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated. If human
s can change and move forward, it could erase the need to; take refuge in religious and cultural
traditions but instead examine our actions and decisions in light of the actual consequences. This
entails overcoming our ignorance regarding the extent to which our lifestyle is built upon the suffering
of other people or animals and the destruction of the environment. (Francione)
This principle of utility showcases the fact that the many ideas humans have where they feel that
animals are there only for instrumental worth. Animals have intrinsic worth, they should be allowed
rights and respect, we should abolish, and not regulate, animal exploitation, you must care morally
about animals. (Francione) Just as progression has been made in

Analysis of The Road Not Taken by Robert Frost Essays
Analysis of The Road Not Taken by Robert Frost ?The Road Not Taken? (1916) tells of someone
faced with two of life?s decisions however only one can be chosen. Whichever road is taken will be
final and will determine the direction that their life takes. Frost drives this poem by a calm and
collective narrative, spoken by the traveler of the diverged roads. Who is speaking with himself trying
to convince himself of which road is the better choice. Frost wrote this poem using standard, modern
language. In line one Frost introduces the diverging roads, which are his main metaphors. Diverging
being the key word in this line because it suggests that the traveler must make a choice. Line two the
speaker expresses his grief of not being ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The exclamation point after line 13 conveys excitement, but that excitement is severed by his
admission in the following lines. ?way leads on to way, I doubted if I should ever come back?
(3.14,15). In the final stanza, lines 16 20 the tone of the poem changes completely. This is the only
stanza that begins with a new sentence, indicating that it is a stronger break from the previous ideas.
The speaker puts himself in a future situation discussing his life. What he states here seems to
contradict what he has said earlier. From his future prospective he says that the paths where different
and that he did not choose the one most traveled by. Perhaps he will in the future actually believe this
and he only wishes that he could choose in the present ?the one less traveled by.?(5.20) ?The Road
Not Taken? was structured by Frost to form four quintains. The majority of the lines contain nine
syllables. This structure is maintained through out the poem. The stanzas are arranged like that of a
thought. One continues to undermine the other, much like decision making. Our first thoughts are
always second guessed by our second and so forth until we make our final decision, which cancels out
all that was thought before. This is what Frost manages to do in the arrangement of his stanzas.
Imagery is the primary concept of this work. The two roads are each described in such a way that the
reader can easy picture the

Advantages Of Decentralization In Relation To CBA
Question One
1. There are several advantages of decentralisation in relation to CBA.
The first one is time relief. Since the number of banks owned by CBA has increased, it is impossible
for the executive management to run all units. Delegating responsibility to lower level managers
allows executive management more focus on strategic issues (Langfield Smith et al. 2015,534).
Second, since CBA is a state wide group of banks and some individual banks provide unique packaged
accounts, delegating decision making to individual bank presidents leads to timely response (Chand
2015) to problems as decisions do not need to refer up through the hierarchy and they have local
knowledge that enable them to manage effectively.
Third, CBA decentralised more decision making autonomy would provide managerial training that
bank presidents can obtain the opportunity to develop their ability in management and hence make

So it is easy to conclude that china s economic markets are sluggish and weak, for these reasons,
China should adopt this monetary strategy to deal with these series of problems, and keeping the
healthy and steady growth in economic markets. On the other hand, China wanted to increase the
monetary (Yuan) liquidity, further, wanted Yuan to become international reserve currency. Broadly
speaking, China hoped to consolidate its central position in the global economic markets. In
conclusion, pulling the healthy and steady growth internally and pushing Chinese monetary (Yuan)

devalue Yuan.
In the short term, this depreciation action will bring varying degree of positive and negative impact in
China and Global world. In the aspect of positive impact, Chinese aggregate demand will go up
considerably in the short run.
Aggregate demand is the total level of spending in the economy and consists of four elements:
consumer spending (C), private investment (I), government expenditure on goods and services (G) and
expenditure on exports (X) less expenditure on imports (M), Thus AD=C+I+G+X M (Sloman, Wride

Morality In The Lottery
When thinking of traditions, the first few that come to mind are putting up the Christmas tree, going to
the fair, and many others. Traditions intertwine between families and others as well, and even
nationwide. However, there are some traditions that we are not able to fathom. For example, in The
Lottery , there is a lottery drawn every year for a good crop season. During this tradition, one person
from the community is stoned to death as a sacrifice. Why don t people question traditions like this?
People who grow up in certain communities do things a little different than their neighboring towns,
because it is what they have known their entire life. To them, it is normal . Consistency is like a drug
due to the fact that people do not always adapt well. People often fixate on repeated circumstances and
the outcome can be detrimental. Repeating the lottery every year in their town is quite out of the
morality I have, however, it is the tradition they all are familiar with. Shockingly enough, the world

Thus, we may not know whether the findings will generalize to other people, situations, or
conceptualizations of the variables. Within particular bounds, significant findings from an
experimental study may infer a general cause, but the presence of other unmeasured variables can
limit that inference. Limitations of Survey Instruments Surveys that are distributed with time
constraints were noted by Delva, Kirby, Knapper, and Birtwhistle (2002) as problematic in that people
who struggle with real or perceived time constraints are less likely to respond to surveys because these
possible respondents feel overworked they just do not have the time to complete the survey. Surveys
often also suffer the limitation of forcing respondents into particular response categories, thereby
limiting the range of responses. Unlike an interview, where respondents can ask clarifying questions,
respondents are usually limited to the text in the survey itself for direction about how to complete it
and where to respond. Delimitations The delimitations of a study are those characteristics that arise
from limitations in the scope of the study (defining the boundaries) and by the conscious exclusionary
and inclusionary decisions made during the development of the study plan. Unlike limitations, which
flow from implicit characteristics of method and design, delimitations result from specific choices by
the researcher. Among these are the choice of objectives and

time for most people, John Ross states that a few were well off through the great depression such as
fine cigar makers, certain stock brokers and politicians. Furthermore, cigar makers worked long hours
under the hot sun for low wages even though the cigar industry was doing better than most. However,
they still pooled their money together to pay for readers. These cigar makers were often foreigners
who were illiterate or spoke a different language. A contemporary issue arose with readers or los
lectores reading to the workers the words of Zola, Dickens, Cervantes, and Tolstoy that everything
they wrote was about the great depression and specifically the lives of the workers. ... Show more

Owners sought this act as the readers taking advantage of the poor workers and taking the little money
they had. On the other hand, owners feared of workers being informed of their lives that they already
knew they had but sought the idea that knowledge equals power and attempted to maintain their

workers would forget and continue their repetitive job of rolling cigars but caused a huge backlash.
According to John Ross, workers stopped working not because of the harsh conditions or low wages
but they were denied a reader. The idea that knowledge is more powerful than money is incorporated
in the reading similarly to the reading Learning to Read and Growing in Knowledge by Frederick

Documentary Conventions
Documentary is a genre that has the ability to provide visual evidence of reality by means of filmic
treatment of actuality. Intrinsically linked to the notion of truth , it relies on the mechanical capability
of the camera to capture an image of likeness. In a dynamic and flexible genre, the possibilities are
endless and as such, are constantly being redefined. Advances in technological factors have driven the
genre s complexity, expanding boundaries and allowing filmmakers the opportunity to create more
precise and accurate visual representations of reality.
The motion camera was first conceived allowing the establishment of film production companies;
technological limits meant films were silent and generally less than a minute in length. ... Show more

It empowered films to have a newfound freedom from the problems associated with the use of a post
synchronized soundtrack. In 1961, a portable sound recording device called the Nagra III, became
available (Kudelski, 1). First used in an investigative film called Chronique d un éte (Morin Rouch,
1961) where the filmmaker posed a simple question to their subjects, Are you happy? The ability to
record both the audio and visual responses in synchrony, rather than having to manipulate sound in the
postproduction process, gave rise to new documentary styles. The device meant documentary
filmmakers could more accurately capture and portray reality and consequently, audiences were able
to experience real events, people and spaces in real time. This technological factor shaped the
documentary genre into a now reliable source of information; displaying the genres

Hannah Senesh One Two Three Summary
Hannah Senesh, author of the poem One Two Three , was a Israeli Hungarian pilot who fought for the
rebel cause during WWII. Senesh was captured by the Hungarian army while she was on a mission
with the Israeli paratroopers to rescue Hungarian Jews being deported to Auschwitz. Though she was
brutally tortured, Senesh never gave the Hungarians information about her mission in order to protect
the locations of her fellow soldiers who were still rescuing Hungarian Jews. Found guilty of treason,
Senesh was executed on November 7, 1944 by a German firing squad. While she was in prison,
Senesh kept a diary, which was published in Hebrew in 1946. Her poem, One Two Three , was written
in just days before her execution. In One Two Three , the only literal action is Senesh s counting and
pacing her tiny cell. Senesh spends the majority of the poem reflecting on the passage of time and her
impending execution. At this point, she realizes that her life is almost over and she laments the loss of
her future. Though Senesh is physically losing her life, she s also experiencing loss of control because
she is no longer in charge of her fate. For these reasons, the poem fits the anthology s theme of loss
and specifically fits within the loss of control category. Senesh argues that it s worth risking your life
to support causes you care about. In One Two Three , the meaning behind Senesh s poem is clear: she
s reflecting on her death sentence and the loss of her future. Though her purpose

The Dominican Republic Essay
The people of the Dominican Republic are knowledgeable of their past in order to know what their
future might bring. The Spanish settlers gave them their language, as well as their predominant faith.
Africans were brought to the Dominican Republic as slaves, bringing their faith, music, and art. Their
love of baseball came from the United States troops. Creativity such as music and art is a large portion
of the Dominican Republican culture and lifestyle. Their music ranges from forms such as meringue,
bachata, and salsa. These diverse forms of music are also combined with jazz, rock, and hip hop to

people of liberation because they seek to challenge all the oppressed and they embody grace by living

unrelenting optimism because they believe: God is good, with God all things are possible, and God
uses us to transform the world. As Jesus people they believe Jesus was the incarnation if God s grace.

The Food And Drug Administration
In 2000, the US Food and Drug Administration issued a health claim which states that consuming
foods containing plant sterol and stanol esters along with other low cholesterol and saturated fat foods
can reduce the risk of coronary heart disease (Jones, Vanstone, Raeini Sarjaz, St Onge, 2003). Today,
many functional foods in the form of margarines, spread, yogurt, and others, have been enriched with
phytosterols and advocated as being able to reduce the risk of coronary heart disease. Phytosterols
have been known for its cholesterol lowering effect by blocking absorption of cholesterol in the
intestines. However, there are controversies surrounding the efficacy of phytosetrol that are enriched
in foods in reducing cholesterol levels. Many studies have also demonstrated the efficacy of
phytosterol enriched foods. Vásquez Trespalacios and Romero Palacio (2014) and Amundsen, Ose,
Nenseter, and Ntanios (2002) have demonstrated the efficacy of phytosterol enriched foods in
reducing total and LDL cholesterol levels. However, there are also many studies that show otherwise.
For example, Jones et al. (2003) and Weingärtner et al. (2016) have shown that phytosterol
supplemented foods did not have any effect on total and LDL cholesterol levels. The debate regarding
the efficacy of phytosterol in functional foods is crucial as phytosterol enriched foods can potentially
be a solution to a continuous increase in population suffering from cardiovascular diseases. The

Mohammed Reza Pahlavi And The Iranian Revolution
The Iranian Revolution was the first of many popular civil insurrections that resulted in the overthrow
of an autocratic monarchy which lasted from 1977 to 1979. It consisted of non violent demonstrations
by the revolutionaries until late 1978, due to the shah s decision to violently silence demonstrators.
The shah, during the time period, was Mohammed Reza Pahlavi. He was viewed by many to be a
western puppet who implemented a variety of systems and programs that suggested westernization.
Iran was being transformed under his rule, and there were efforts to separate from Islamic culture and
religious values. However, because of Pahlavi s anti traditional changes, he saw a broad coalition of
forces formed against him. These revolutionaries ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

and gave the more financial opportunities. They also wanted democratic rights but were more
concerned with their well being. The students generally just wanted transparency. Students were very
anxious about their future and the condition of Iran. They wanted to rid Iran of corruption and
westernization. Intellectuals wanted the Khomeini to return, to change the governmental structure,
economic programs, and restore nationalism in Iran. Leftists strongly opposed the shah and were open
to the clerics guidance. Islamists, of course, listened to the clerics and wanted Islamic culture to be
reestablished in Iran. Lastly, the Shi a clerics wanted to establish an Islamic State, to cease
westernization, and to rebuild Islamic culture. All these groups supported Khomeini and wanted the
shah to be overthrown. They were not going to be satisfied with reformation alone to the shah.
Although they all evidently had personal wishes, they came together in order to depose the shah and

Vermont Civil Rights Case Study
Vermont has helped to lead the nation with many political ideas which were ahead of their time. For
example, Vermont was one of the first states to abolish slavery, in its 1777 Constitution.
http://slavenorth.com/vermont.htm Vermont had some other landmark political initiatives, such as Act
250 in 1970, which requires a permit for larger scale improvements on land. Under this law, a person
has to prove that their building project would meet environmental standards. In 1972 Vermont also
passed a beverage container deposit law, the purposes of which was to deal with littering and
encourage recycling. http://www.bottlebill.org/legislation/usa/vermont.htm And In 2000 Vermont
became the first state to adopt a statute providing for a civil union for same sex couples.
(http://www.lambdalegal.org/in court/cases/baker v vermont) A coalition supporting gay rights had
brought a case before the Vermont Supreme Court on behalf of gay couples, Baker v. Vermont. The
plaintiffs asked the Court to make sure that gay couples were not excluded from the same benefits and
protections that straight couples have. http://www.lambdalegal.org/in court/cases/baker v vermont. ...

The Study of Marine Life
It wasn t until Aristotle s time that written records of marine life was composed. Aristotle (384 BC to
322 BC) was the first to write about marine life, recording his observations made on or near the Island
of Lesbos in Ancient Greece. He recorded identifications of a variety of species ranging from
echinoderms to crustaceans to mollusks and even fish. Not only was Aristotle the first to write about
his observations of marine life, he was also the first to record his work on the anatomy and physiology
of marine animals and was the first to use a systematic taxonomy to classify these animals (Blits,
1999). It is because of his early work that Aristotle is often referred to as the father of marine biology
and comparative physiology.
The modern day study of marine life began in the 18th century. Captain James Cook (1728 1779) was
one of the first explorers to circumnavigate the world. During this time he mapped much of the
uncharted waters and also logged many descriptions of plants and animals he came across during his
extensive voyages (Cook King, 1784).
Following Captain Cook s exploration, many scientists began to study marine life more closely. One
example of such early research is the famously debated topic of the importance of subsidence in reef
growth (Fautin, 2002). Subsidence is a geological process in which landforms gradually sink as a
result of movements of the lithospheric plates of the Earth s crust and upper mantle. During his 1836
expedition on the HMS

The Effect Of Sonic Logs On The Petroleum Industry And The...
Logging is a method which has been used over a period of time to better understand subsurface
parameters and reservoir conditions. The Acoustic or Sonic log is one such method which is used in
combination with density and neutron logs in order to determine these parameters. Full waveform
acoustic logging has advanced significantly in both theory and application in recent years, and these
advances have greatly increased the capability of log analysts to measure the physical properties of
formations (Paillet et al 1992). This report focuses on the basic application of sonic logs in the
petroleum industry and the current advances made in their application. It is also explained how
porosity of the rocks are obtained from shaly formations using sonic logs.
The principle of sonic logging involves a transmitter and a receiver wherein a signal is sent from the
transmitter and the amount of time taken until it has reached the receiver is recorded. The speed of
sound in the subsurface depends on the elastic properties of the rock matrix, the porosity of the
formations, fluid content and pressure of the formation (Petroleum Transactions, Members AIME
1958). Sonic logging is carried out after the well has been drilled. Background: History of Sonic Logs
Sonic logs were first introduced in the 1920s as a part of surface seismic techniques in in oil and gas
exploration. In the beginning there was an obvious interpretation problem between the time and depth
correlation. Although the

  • 3. Essay on The New Identity of Exodus as a Myth The New Identity of Exodus as a Myth The story of the tooth fairy has become a part of the cultural tradition of generations. Many American children discover the legend of the tooth fairy at an early age. Furthermore, this mythical tale explains the meaning behind children losing their baby teeth. It marks a rite of passage between infancy and early childhood. In the strictest sense of the definition of a myth, however, the tooth fairy does not qualify as a mythical story. It does not have all of the essential traits. So what precisely is a myth? The Greek word for myth is mythos , meaning story. According to Dr. Dennis Doyle, A myth is a story that expresses the root meanings and values of a culture. Although it may seem ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Primordial myths distinguish the beginnings of the universe, and how it was created. Foundation myths, on the other hand, relate the story of the origins of a people and their rituals (Doyle, 29 Aug. 2002). Therefore, the Exodus story is a foundation myth because it explains how the ancient Hebrew community established its roots. An authentic foundation myth also serves basic functions. The religious function of a myth explains how the people of the universe will worship and what they will fear. The question of how the society and culture will be structured is answered in the social function. The psychological function of a myth establishes how and why the society behaves in the ways that it does. Finally, the historical perspective of a myth provides background knowledge to increase in a myth s credibility. When all of these factors are combined, one attains a better understanding of a myth (Doyle, 29 Aug. 2002). The religious function of the Exodus story introduces the major characters that play a role in this myth. Moses, a descendant from a long line of Israelites, becomes the main character in determining the fate of the Israelites in Egypt. He first experiences the voice and wisdom of God in the form of a burning bush (Ex. 3:3). While in the physical form of a fire, the Lord instructs Moses to rescue them (the Israelites) from the hands of the Egyptians and lead them out of that land into a good and spacious land, a land flowing ... It helps with stability, mobility and also cushions the knee. There are several menisci within the knee and this along with the variety of motions and impacts that can occur to one s knee are what cause the likelihood of injury to increase dramatically. The various types of tears require different kinds of rehabilitation. Some of these tears may require surgery. R.I.C.E is the acronym for rest, ice, compress, and elevate. Rest means not to overuse the injured area; keep the knee mobile, but cut down on its use. Ice means to ice the injured area for ten minutes and then ten minutes off several times, and repeat this pattern three times a day; these numbers may change depending on your doctor. Compression helps diminish swelling of the injured area. Keep the injured area firmly compressed with a wrap or compression band and make sure it is not too tight because this will restrict blood flow and slow the healing process. The tightness of the compress should limit expansion and not cause severe compression. The knee should be elevated at least twice a day. Raise the injured area above the heart. In the knee, this is easily done by lying down on your back and raising your leg. Anti inflammatory medications such as ibuprophin, advil, motrin and naproxen may be recommended, but ask your doctor before using any medications. For more serious tears, such as moderate to large tears in the red zone , surgery will be a likely solution. This surgery is called a meniscectomy . This is where the doctor will remove the entire injured meniscus. For tears that spread from the red zone to the inner two thirds of the meniscus, surgery may not help. Another option is a partial meniscectomy. This surgery is where only a part of the meniscus is removed. Talking with your doctor will be the deciding factor. Firearms are used defensively roughly 2.5 million times per year, more than four times as many as criminal uses. This amounts to 2,575 lives protected for every life lost to a gun. It doesn t have to be to that extreme, it just goes back to the simple rule treat others as you want to be treated . Human s don t need to go above and beyond in living side by side with animals, there s just small things that could be done, and thoughts that could be eliminated to help the nation move forward, as Gandhi said, the greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated. Frost drives this poem by a calm and collective narrative, spoken by the traveler of the diverged roads. Who is speaking with himself trying to convince himself of which road is the better choice. Since the number of banks owned by CBA has increased, it is impossible for the executive management to run all units. Delegating responsibility to lower level managers allows executive management more focus on strategic issues (Langfield Smith et al. 2015,534). Second, since CBA is a state wide group of banks and some individual banks provide unique packaged accounts, delegating decision making to individual bank presidents leads to timely response (Chand 2015) to problems as decisions do not need to refer up through the hierarchy and they have local knowledge that enable them to manage effectively. • 20. Documentary Conventions Documentary is a genre that has the ability to provide visual evidence of reality by means of filmic treatment of actuality. Intrinsically linked to the notion of truth , it relies on the mechanical capability of the camera to capture an image of likeness. In a dynamic and flexible genre, the possibilities are endless and as such, are constantly being redefined. Advances in technological factors have driven the genre s complexity, expanding boundaries and allowing filmmakers the opportunity to create more precise and accurate visual representations of reality. The motion camera was first conceived allowing the establishment of film production companies; technological limits meant films were silent and generally less than a minute in length. ... The ability to record both the audio and visual responses in synchrony, rather than having to manipulate sound in the postproduction process, gave rise to new documentary styles. The device meant documentary filmmakers could more accurately capture and portray reality and consequently, audiences were able to experience real events, people and spaces in real time. • 22. Hannah Senesh One Two Three Summary Hannah Senesh, author of the poem One Two Three , was a Israeli Hungarian pilot who fought for the rebel cause during WWII. Senesh was captured by the Hungarian army while she was on a mission with the Israeli paratroopers to rescue Hungarian Jews being deported to Auschwitz. Though she was brutally tortured, Senesh never gave the Hungarians information about her mission in order to protect the locations of her fellow soldiers who were still rescuing Hungarian Jews. Found guilty of treason, Senesh was executed on November 7, 1944 by a German firing squad. While she was in prison, Senesh kept a diary, which was published in Hebrew in 1946. Her poem, One Two Three , was written in just days before her execution. In One Two Three , the only literal action is Senesh s counting and pacing her tiny cell. Senesh spends the majority of the poem reflecting on the passage of time and her impending execution. At this point, she realizes that her life is almost over and she laments the loss of her future. Though Senesh is physically losing her life, she s also experiencing loss of control because she is no longer in charge of her fate. For these reasons, the poem fits the anthology s theme of loss and specifically fits within the loss of control category. Senesh argues that it s worth risking your life to support causes you care about. In One Two Three , the meaning behind Senesh s poem is clear: she s reflecting on her death sentence and the loss of her future. Though her purpose ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 24. The Food And Drug Administration In 2000, the US Food and Drug Administration issued a health claim which states that consuming foods containing plant sterol and stanol esters along with other low cholesterol and saturated fat foods can reduce the risk of coronary heart disease (Jones, Vanstone, Raeini Sarjaz, St Onge, 2003). Today, many functional foods in the form of margarines, spread, yogurt, and others, have been enriched with phytosterols and advocated as being able to reduce the risk of coronary heart disease. Phytosterols have been known for its cholesterol lowering effect by blocking absorption of cholesterol in the intestines. However, there are controversies surrounding the efficacy of phytosetrol that are enriched in foods in reducing cholesterol levels. Many studies have also demonstrated the efficacy of phytosterol enriched foods. Vásquez Trespalacios and Romero Palacio (2014) and Amundsen, Ose, Nenseter, and Ntanios (2002) have demonstrated the efficacy of phytosterol enriched foods in reducing total and LDL cholesterol levels. However, there are also many studies that show otherwise. For example, Jones et al. (2003) and Weingärtner et al. (2016) have shown that phytosterol supplemented foods did not have any effect on total and LDL cholesterol levels. The debate regarding the efficacy of phytosterol in functional foods is crucial as phytosterol enriched foods can potentially be a solution to a continuous increase in population suffering from cardiovascular diseases. • 30. The Study of Marine Life It wasn t until Aristotle s time that written records of marine life was composed. Aristotle (384 BC to 322 BC) was the first to write about marine life, recording his observations made on or near the Island of Lesbos in Ancient Greece. He recorded identifications of a variety of species ranging from echinoderms to crustaceans to mollusks and even fish. Not only was Aristotle the first to write about his observations of marine life, he was also the first to record his work on the anatomy and physiology of marine animals and was the first to use a systematic taxonomy to classify these animals (Blits, 1999). It is because of his early work that Aristotle is often referred to as the father of marine biology and comparative physiology. The modern day study of marine life began in the 18th century. Captain James Cook (1728 1779) was one of the first explorers to circumnavigate the world. During this time he mapped much of the uncharted waters and also logged many descriptions of plants and animals he came across during his extensive voyages (Cook King, 1784). Following Captain Cook s exploration, many scientists began to study marine life more closely. One example of such early research is the famously debated topic of the importance of subsidence in reef growth (Fautin, 2002). Subsidence is a geological process in which landforms gradually sink as a result of movements of the lithospheric plates of the Earth s crust and upper mantle. • 31. The Effect Of Sonic Logs On The Petroleum Industry And The... Logging is a method which has been used over a period of time to better understand subsurface parameters and reservoir conditions. The Acoustic or Sonic log is one such method which is used in combination with density and neutron logs in order to determine these parameters. Full waveform acoustic logging has advanced significantly in both theory and application in recent years, and these advances have greatly increased the capability of log analysts to measure the physical properties of formations (Paillet et al 1992). This report focuses on the basic application of sonic logs in the petroleum industry and the current advances made in their application. It is also explained how porosity of the rocks are obtained from shaly formations using sonic logs. The principle of sonic logging involves a transmitter and a receiver wherein a signal is sent from the transmitter and the amount of time taken until it has reached the receiver is recorded. The speed of sound in the subsurface depends on the elastic properties of the rock matrix, the porosity of the formations, fluid content and pressure of the formation (Petroleum Transactions, Members AIME 1958). Sonic logging is carried out after the well has been drilled. Background: History of Sonic Logs Sonic logs were first introduced in the 1920s as a part of surface seismic techniques in in oil and gas exploration. In the beginning there was an obvious interpretation problem between the time and depth correlation. Although the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
