African American Shortcomings In America
Of course, those Korean immigrants were only fighting for their own economic survival in America,
too. Yet the assertion was understandable: during the 1970s and 1980s, deindustrialization, which
brought unemployment to the middle class, would only exacerbate the conditions of Los Angeles most
impoverished. The few remaining jobs it left to the slums had been seized and hoarded by Korean
immigrants. In the reality of the situation, however, African Americans, despite their efforts and an
ongoing movement for civil rights, were simply incapable of achieving the same level of
entrepreneurial success of Korean Americans during this time period. The reasons for their
shortcomings in Koreatown, in addition to lacking higher education and professional job experience
many Korean immigrants had at their disposal, were primarily due to the deeply ingrained institution
of prejudice against African Americans. African Americans were helplessly vulnerable to racism
regardless of how hard they worked, they would struggle to compete with other minority groups.
Nevertheless, African Americans continued to criticize Korean Americans as they accumulated the
capital and social mobility necessary to move out of Koreatown. The neighborhood had proved itself a
valuable tool for Korean entrepreneurial ventures, but it still remained a poor urban slum. Besides
thriving Korean businesses, historians Nancy Abelmann and John Lie discovered that Koreatown was
home to the highest crime rate in all of Los Angeles, and a median household income which was half
the California state average and even lower than that of South Central Los Angeles. Other than to keep
families perpetually wary, the district s poor and dangerous conditions served to question Korean
businesses for their seemingly nonexistent contributions on the surrounding community. While Korean
merchants certainly could have helped raise Koreatown out of poverty, they instead escaped with their
families to wealthy suburbs as soon as they had acquired enough capital. These suburban homes might
have marked the first milestones for Korean immigrant families, but more importantly, they justified
African American claims of stolen economic opportunity and further developed

1800 s Locomotive Headlamp
The artifact shown in class is an 1800 s locomotive headlamp. The headlamp on the locomotive had
several purposes. One of the most important purposes was to make it easier for the driver to see in
front of the train and make sure they were not approaching any obstacles. The headlight was also used
to alert anyone ahead that the train was coming. There were several attempts and prototypes of the
locomotive headlamps. One that was used for some time after the civil war was a large box that was
almost two feet by two feet, with glass in the front. It was sometimes decorated to make it more
visually appealing, but it did not last. The one that became the most popular was much smaller and
round. To identify the headlamp engine numbers were stamped out of the metal and ... Show more

In the late 1800s many locomotive companies began using electric headlamps instead of oil lamps.
There were multiple problems that came with using the electric lights instead of oil. It was very
difficult to supply electric power when the train was in a station (Presentation Magazine). The light
was extremely bright and made it hard for the drivers of others trains to see when they were arriving at
the station. In the early 1900 s the arc lamp was invented and made it much easier for other train
drivers to see and it allowed people to safely cross. The headlamp shown in class was made using
black metal, possibly iron, with a glass plate in the front which allows the light to pass through it. The
glass is on a hinge so it could be opened and closed. The artifact relates to what we are learning
because the locomotive industry became one of the largest and most important industries in America
for a long time during and after the civil war. The trains were used to transport supplies to the troops
all throughout the war, and after the war they were used as transportation for people. There were many
investors in the trains that made huge amounts of

Comparing Dantes Inferno And Chaucer s Canterbury Tales
Dante s Inferno and Chaucer s Canterbury Tales are both tremendously significant literary works that
are still relevant to this present day. Dante s Inferno depicts one pilgrim being led into the depths of
Hell at the hands of a guide named Virgil. As the two descend into Hell, it becomes apparent that
Dante has strong religious opinions that influence his placement of several individuals into the various
levels of Hell. One thing he makes obvious in his works is that hypocrisy and fraudulence are
revolting characteristics. This piece of literature has the tone of darkness and warnings. Because Dante
was exiled from his native country of Florence by people who possessed these characteristics, it only
seems fair that these people have their own special places in Hell. Chaucer s Canterbury Tales,
however, tells many pilgrim s tales as a means to pass time during their voyage to Canterbury. The tale
has a lighter tone to it, yet still has some of the same views and convictions as Dante s; such as the
disapproval of hypocrites and the drawing attention to fraudulent religious figures. Chaucer s tale has
a slightly more entertaining means of delivering a message while ... Show more content on

According to poets. Org, like most Florentines during his lifetime, Dante was affected by the Guelph
Ghibelline conflict, a political division of loyalty between the Holy Roman Emperor and the Papacy.
On June 11, 1289, he fought in the ranks at the battle of Campaldino on the side of the Guelphs,
helping to bring forth a reformation of the Florentine constitution. (poets.org) After being sent to
Rome by the Pope, Dante learned of his exile from his native city after the Black Guelphs took over
and implemented their own government. Dante never returned to Florence. He died in 1321 in

On the other hand one single employee can take care of Large corporations an professional users .
(One single person can be responsible of 90% of the companie s revenue) So , we have two solutions :
first , to find the best employee and put him in charge of the professional users and large corporate
accounts and use the other 9 employees to cover DIYs . The second solution is to make a cost benefit
analysis to determine if having 9 employees that generate only 10% of the companie s revenue is
profitable (Pareto principle) . So , we think that the company should let go to the DIYs clients and
maybe use this employees to find new bigger customers. On this manner, the company would focuss
only in professional users and large corporate accounts , this would generate much more profit and
reduce cost of unnecessary employees and time.
* Finally , the time zones problem . 40% of the companie s clients are located on a different time zone
so , the customer service is not available at certain time . For this , we think that the best solution is to
change the employees working hours. The employee that will be in charge of Professional users and
Large corporate accounts will be working from 10:00 to 9:00 , on this way , the large corporate s
accounts needs will be covered . The other 9 employees will continue with a normal schedule from

The Pros And Cons Of Bullying
In this world of negativity, I believe that you should stay positive. When I was in elementary school, I
used to get bullied for being bigger than all the other kids. I didn t understand why was I getting
bullied, but I was still nice. I did what I was supposed to do to maintain good grades and pass all my
classes. Staying positive in a world full of mean people can take you as far, as you allow it too.
Being bullied made me feel like I wasn t good enough. I was called names for being fat and not
dressing like everyone else. Being in elementary school, you don t think that dressing a certain way or
looking a certain way is a big deal. I tried looking like everyone else but my family was struggling so
that was an epic fail. Both my parents we on drugs but I didn t think it would affect me this bad. I was
depressed as a chill but I still got up for school to face those bullies. With drug addicted parents and
having to face bullies on a daily basis on push me hard to keep up good grades. I knew I had someone
that I could trust. By the time I hit middle school, I was still going to through the same situation. I
thought there I had no one to turn to since talking to my parents, my teachers and friends didn t do me
much justice. I finally met two people who helped change things for me. Mrs. V was a school
counselor and Ms. Pam was a lady who worked in the nurse s office. Mrs. V and Ms. Pam was the
light at the end of my dark tunnel.

investigation ends after District Attorney Ray Gricar decided the case warranted no criminal charges.
Shreffler reported to the grand jury that Thomas Harmon, who headed the campus police, told him to

You Have No Friends by Farhad Manjoo
Journalist, Farhad Manjoo, in his article, You Have No Friends, emphasizes the social and networking
benefits Facebook has to offer. Manjoo s purpose is to convince people that have not joined the
networking giant that the benefits of joining Facebook outweigh the arguments to avoid it. He adopts a
cogent tone in order address any concerns of the Facebook holdouts. Manjoo opens his article by
reciting a message that Mark Zuckerberg posted to the company s blog, which stated that Facebook
had reached its 150 millionth member. It was a quintessential moment for the social networking giant,
because it demonstrated the popularity and prominence in how people network and stay connected
with one another. For comparison purposes, Manjoo states, If Facebook were a country, it would be
the eight most populated in the world, just ahead of Japan, Russia and Nigeria (Manjoo, 2009). He
estimates that Facebook will grow to nearly 300 million people by this time next year in order to show
the continuing popularity and growth of Facebook (Manjoo, 2009). Manjoo was correct in his
estimation in terms of growth and has continued since the time of publication of the article. In fact, as
of January 2014, the number of monthly individual Facebook users surpassed 1.3 billion ( Facebook
statistics, 2014). These numbers are significant because it shows a shift in how people interact with
one another and that the majority of people with access to the internet use Facebook. In order to find

Batman And Greek Mythology
Myths are everlasting stories that have been passed on for decades. Usually, these stories contain
special significance depending on culture and religion. Although there are several types of mythology,
Greek mythology is one of the most popular. It was created by the ancient Greeks to serve as a basis
for their religious beliefs and cultural practices. Greek myths consist of gods and goddesses, which
obtain unique superpowers that permit them to control nature in all of its forms. Furthermore, ancient
mythology has inspired contemporary culture by linking similar characteristics to new characters and
improved stories. Modern day society has reimagined mythology through superheroes that save the
world from villains and crime. Some superheroes have special powers either from birth or from
scientific experiments, while others become heroes by training and with the help of modern
technology; however, these modifications do not disregard the fact that modern folklore developed
from ancient tales. For instance, Batman is the modern interpretation of Achilles because they are an
archetype, share several characteristics, and demonstrate the evolution of mythology.
To start off, Batman is a modernized version of Achilles. In other words, the Batman character serves
as an archetype of Greek mythological hero, Achilles. According to Literary Devices, An archetype,
also known as a universal symbol, maybe a character, a theme, a symbol, or even a setting. Many

First They Killed My Father By Loung Ung
There is a thin line between living and surviving. In the memoir, First They Killed My Father by
Loung Ung, it is evident that one s ability to live a comfortable life is often times thwarted by factors
that force many to try and survive. Cambodian born American human rights activist, Loung Ung, is a
survivor of the Cambodian genocide that took place from 1975 to 1979. While under the influence of
Cambodia s new communist government, the Khmer Rouge, around 1.5 million men, women, and
children died from exhaustion, starvation, and disease. As the daughter of an old democratic
government official, Ung and her family were forced to abandon their old life in hopes for survival. A
reoccurring theme within Ung s memoir is that suffering, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
To prevent the possible negative effects of Keav s death on his family, Ung s father used their grief to
encourage their chances towards survival. This is shown later in chapter eleven when Ung s father
says, We all have to forget her death and continue...We don t want the chief to think that we can no
longer contribute to their society. We have to save our strength to go on. Keav would want us to go on;
it is the only way we will survive (Ung, Pg. 100). Ung s father used their mutual loss to promote their
survival. Although it is not blatantly expressed, Ung s father had to comprehend his own suffering in
order to seek out strategies that would be beneficial to their survival as a family. Yet, even with his
own suffering Ung s father found it within himself to encourage his family because he knew that
without his encouragement they each would not have been able to survive that situation. Not only did
Ung s father help them to recover after Keav s death, but he also helped them to each develop the
emotional strength they would need for future reference. After the death of her close friend, Pithy, Ung
wrote, In a panic I get up and run after Kim and Chou out of the shelter, away from Pithy. Away from
her screaming mother. Away from the sorrow that threatens to take residence in my heart (Ung, Pg.
197). With the death of her loved ones continuously lingering in the back of her mind, Ung pushed
herself to move on for purposes of survival. Without

The Health Of Poor People
The health of poor people is affected most around the world. Studies suggest that the health of any
individual is badly imfluenced by low socioeconomic status of that person. There is a social gradient
in health that runs from top to bottom of the socioeconomic spectrum. The social gradient in health
means that health inequities affect everyone (WHO 2014).

Absolut poverty: it is when someone has no sufficient resources and money to cover their basic needs.

Literary Analysis Of Woman In A Purple Coat
For this analysis, I will be using Woman In A Purple Coat by Henri Matisse (1937), oil on canvas.
1937 was a turbulent year globally. From the Hindenburg blimp exploding, to the Japanese invasion of
China, and the disappearance of Amelia Earhart. Many events happened that year that would forever
alter the course of history. Henri Matisse, an eclectic soul, would make his mark upon 1937 as well
with Woman In A Purple Coat. This piece would cause all who came before and after him to rethink
how they would make their legacy, as Matisse moved the bar to previously unobtainable heights
through this work. The first thing you notice in Matisse s painting is the purple coat that Lydia
Delectorskaya, his lover of many years, is wearing. This coat, an exotic Moroccan costume, with its
bold and vivid color, jumps right out at its viewers. While Lydia reclines for her pose, the vase of
flowers and fruit on the table in the foreground become apparent to the audience. As do the bold
shapes and patterns that are on the walls, with their incredibly bright colors, outlined with thick lines.
The lines Matisse used creates a certain symmetry within the frame. His perspective lines give order
and dimension to an otherwise visually busy art work. Henri used bold, thick lines to create definition,
even using the back end of the brush to scrape away paint to leave exposed canvas to create his
effects. Matisse was a pioneer within his profession. He was often criticized for his lack of

Bullying Play Character Analysis
I am in a playroom with many toys all around. Of all the toys that are in the room, the four year old
goes straight for the big semi truck. Why would I be sitting for twenty minutes just to watch this little
boy? Well, it is interesting seeing the imagination of a young child go wild.
The little boy with his black and red mickey mouse pants and a white t shirt. He runs over to the semi
truck, instead of just racing it he sits right on top of it. Since he is about three feet and five inches his
legs have to bend in order to move the truck. He starts to make car sound and pushes the truck to the

makes a voice for the kid named David. No hitting, David now the other character, Okay mommy
Since he has no one to play with at home his age he just creates different characters that are about his
age and makes different scenarios.
He finally sees me watching him and he runs right up to me. He doesn t say anything he just hugs me
and then goes back to playing. But while he is about to go back he asks his character, Do you need to
go potty? then in another voice he says, yes. Then he leaves and goes to the bathroom, but his mother
tells him not to bring the toy in with him. But he starts to argue that he needs to go with him. Then his
bottom lip comes out and he shrugs his shoulder. Since he sees that it will not work he says, Okay I
put it back.
In watching this boy I have seen things that I have never seen with other children before. I feel like he
understands the reasons for us telling him things more than we give him credit for. We think he does
not understand but he surely does. By reenacting different scenarios of him getting in trouble and the
response that he gave was very impressive. Kids his age are smarter than we think they

Criteria For A Nobel Prize
Criteria for a Nobel Prize in Leadership Alan Weber (2009) wrote an article for the Washington Post,
that focused on the criteria that one might use to suggest a nominee. In his article, Weber offered that
candidacy for the prize should not be base upon achievement broadly defined, or abstract qualities that
can be attributed to leaders, but clear and undeniable moral authority (Weber, 2009, para.1). Cook
(2009) added that he would choose a nominee who has pretty much transcended his or her own ego,
and who sees humanity as interconnected in a vast system to which we all, ultimately, are contributing
(Cook, 2009, para.4). While these points provide a good starting point for selection the development
of selection criteria, I have demined that any individual who would be a candidate for a Nobel Prize in
Pauline Leadership should be characterized by the following the following:
Demonstrated Christ Centered Core Values
Unwavering Sense of Mission and Purpose
Alignment of Character, Ethics, and Actions (Bradberry Greaves, 2012)
Servant Orientation

Humility
Self Discipline (Lee, 2003)

Attraction In Cross-Sex Relationships Essay
Can you be friends with someone you like? The dynamic of cross sex friendships is an interesting area
of study and one of which has little data. Moreover, research on this narrow subject is rather limited
and comes from fairly old studies. The idea that men and women cannot be just friends, is due to the
idea that there must be some aspect of physical and or romantic involved. As Reeder discussed
traditional societal norms and expectations of male female relationships have played a role in how we
view cross sex friendships today. The literature on cross sex friendships has explored the role of
attraction and the impact it has on the dynamics of cross sex relationships. This literature review will
investigate the role of attraction on cross sex relationships and whether attraction hinders being friends
with someone you like. Further, exploring the various common themes among the literature on
attraction in cross sex friendships: the definition of attraction is subjective and there are different types
of attraction, attraction tends to confuse the definition of the relationship, men perceive attraction
more than women and lastly, attraction indeed is a challenge but not necessarily detrimental. It is
hypothesized that attraction creates a significant challenge for those involved in a cross sex
relationship. Therefore, once attraction becomes an issue in the relationship, the possibility of the
relationship lasting is questionable. The following five studies support the

The Berlin Conference Of 1885 Sought To Regulate European
The Berlin Conference of 1885 sought to regulate European colonization and trade in Africa and was
how the European powers avoided conflict between one another over African resources. This meeting
of European powers is referred to as the beginning of the scramble for Africa. No African could have
expected what was to come post 1855. The aggression and exploitation that followed, described
vividly in Heart of Darkness, has now adapted into more humane mechanisms due to criticism against
brutality in the nineteenth century. Today, the imperialism Africa faces is hidden behind government
sanctions, lies about cooperation and reciprocal benefits instead of mass killings. Although the degree
of exploitation is similar, the manner in which China ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The actions of Kurtz and other Europeans are extremely similar to actions taken today in regard to
their untamed greed. Like the Europeans, India and China have no consideration for the people
already inhabiting the area and are establishing complete dominance over Africa. However, in current
times, there is less blatant aggression and much of the invasive actions are hidden behind false
cooperation. Today, China attempts to lawfully purloin African resources with an extremely self
promotional strategy. The country aims to maintain access to Africa s sought after natural resources,
regardless of the detrimental consequences for Africa. Some argue that the increase in exporting that
China creates will help Africa s economy develop, however these specific resources can hurt the
economy long term. This is seen in examples such as Nigeria and Angola, Sub Saharan Africa s two
largest oil exporters. Oil and mining are not labor intensive industries, therefore while these natural
deposits may create impressive growth figures, they do not translate into widespread job creation. In
fact, an economy solely based upon large oil and mineral reserves distorts the local currency. The
prices of other exports then increase and it makes them hard to sell overseas, a phenomenon labeled
the Dutch disease. Without careful management, something China has not provided, the oil and
mineral revenue will

Nucleosome Formation Executive Summary
SUMMARY: This five year career development plan (CDP) is an integrated research, education, and
outreach program which is concerned with the molecular dynamics and electronic structure studies of
nucleosomes, which are complexes of DNA and proteins in chromatin which account for 75 90% of
the packing of genomic DNA in mammalian cells. This CDP has four main goals:
1. To make a fundamental advance in the computational modeling of nucleosome stability.
Understanding the base pair sequence dependence of the propensities for nucleosome formation has
been a long sought goal in cell biology as nucleosome stability is thought to be an important
component of transcriptional regulation. In particular DNA methylation and histone acetylation, which

To capture important components of nucleosome formation, such as the propensity of nucleosomes
not to form for A tract sequences. There have been recent attempts to model DNA with empirical force
fields such as CHARMM and AMBER, but the computational complexity associated with modeling
nucleosome structures has so far restricted these simulations to short segments (18 bp) with specific
histone DNA interactions have been ignored. This study will merge different computational
approaches to resolve results obtained through experimental studies which ultimately should be
linked, forming a consistent theory;
3. To serve or otherwise address the needs of disadvantaged individuals majoring in STEM disciplines
by implementing a culturally relevant Peer Led Team Learning (PLTL) model for introductory 200
level courses in Mathematics, Chemistry and Biology. This study will also investigate and evaluate the
success of PLTL interactions and small group activities and evaluate the program s effectiveness for
improving student performance, retention and increasing participation of non traditional students. The

Sweat Zora Neale Hurston Analysis
Love s Negative Influence in Life
Love, a beautiful feeling one can experience in life. It brings happiness in one s life. When someone is
in love, we think it will have positive effect and bring happiness in individual s life. However, this is
not the case for main characters of Faulkner s A Rose for Emily , and Zora Neale Hurston s Sweat .
Both short stories reveal that the effect of love can be negative, even deadly. Delia Jones of Sweat by
Zora Neale Hurston, and Emily Grierson of A Rose for Emily by William Faulkner, are unclear
between love and hatred with no clear answer, towards the direct male influence and control in their
lives. The male dominance in their lives has created lots of problems in their lives; however, they

The relationship of Delia Jones makes sense to reader as it is an image of some of marriages in today s
world. In the short story, Delia Jones has faced various hardships with her terrible husband. Sykes is
mean, unfaithful, and cruel man. He always beats Delia just for no reason. Two months after the
wedding, he had given her the first brutal beating (Hurston 733). He always thinks of his wife as an
ugly and skinny. Therefore, He has a love affair with another woman named Bertha. This upsets Delia
because Sykes only lovea Bertha because she is fat, and hate her, because she is skinny. As she carries
on her laundry business and church activities, he returns to the arms of the mistress whose curves
excite him more than his wife s spare strength (Ryan 72). The actions of Sykes Jones destroy the
motivation and desire of her way of living. She later starts defending herself by beginning to voice
against her husband. Delia starts defending herself and home when she yelled, that ole snaggle toothed
black woman you runnin with ain t comin heah to pile up on mah sweat and blood. You ain t paid for
nothin on this place, and Ah m gointer stay right heah till Ah m toted out foot foremost (Hurston 733).

Essay on The Doctrine of the Mean in Aristotles Politics
The Doctrine of the Mean in Aristotle s Politics.
Examining the texts of Aristotle s Nicomachean Ethics and Politics side by side, one is bound to find
parallels between his reasoning with regard to the individual and to the state. In Nicomachean Ethics
Aristotle discusses happiness, virtue, and the good life on an individual level and lays out necessary
provisions for the good life of a person. He maintains that virtue is a necessary element of happiness: a
man will be happy if he has virtues of justice, courage, and temperance, each constituting a balance
between the extremes. But this requirement of virtue for the happy life goes beyond the individual
level, as we see it in Politics . There, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Therefore, the mean relative to us is not one, and is not the same for everyone .
With respect to this, Aristotle states that virtue seeks the mean relative to us, and this is how each
science produces its product well : by focusing on what is intermediate and making the product
conform to that. A well made product will be that to which nothing can be added or taken away
without making it worse, since it assumes that excess or deficiency ruins a good result, while the mean
preserves it. And just like good craftsmen focus on an intermediate when they produce a product, one
should aim at intermediate in regard to virtue.
Thus we see that virtue is to be achieved by concentrating on the optimal mean between the extremes
of deficiency and excess. But the discussion of virtue would be incomplete if one did not investigate
its role with respect to the object possessing virtue and its effect on that object. Since Aristotle defines
virtue as a state that decides the optimal mean relative to us, he asserts that every virtue causes its
possessors to be in a good state and to perform their functions well; the virtue of eyes, e.g., makes the
eyes and their functioning excellent, because it makes us see well , and this is argued to be true in the
case of all objects. At this point, the role of virtue with respect to the object is apparent: something
will be functioning at the best level only if it reaches an

What Is The Theme Of Escape From Camp 14
Everyone has someone who will help in every situations. Who care about you. And you thought of

Wild Lands Policy Summary
Will new government policies that designate areas as Wild Lands hurt local economies? According to
the first article or testimony I read which was titled Testimony before the House Natural Resources
Committee Hearing on The Impact of the Administration s Wild Lands Order on Jobs and Economic
Growth by Mike Lee, Yes. He not only believes that it will hurt local economies but that it is illegal.
He states that under the U.S. Constitution, Congress has the sole authority to regulate federal lands.
For public lands, Congress delegates that authority to the Interior Secretary in a series of federal laws,
including the Bureau of Land Management Organic Act or the Federal Land Policy and Management
Act (FLPMA). For wilderness designation, Congress ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This article talks about the Wilderness Act that was passed in 1964, the enactment of the Federal Land
Policy and Management Act (FLPMA) in 1976, and the Wild Lands Policy in 2010. She discusses the
history of these acts and policies. The article describes how these acts and policies passed and the
different litigation that came from them. The Wild Lands Policy is described in detail in section V. The
article first describes the three ways the new Wild Lands Policy was to work. The first way was it
affirmed that the agency should consider wilderness values as an integral component of its multiple
use mission, identifying lands with wilderness characteristics (LWC) in its mandatory section 201
inventories. Second, the Policy directed BLM to use its section 202 land use planning authority to
consider designating appropriate LWC as Wild Lands, that is, lands that the agency would protect in
amended RMPs by avoiding impairment to their wilderness characteristics. Third, for project level
decisions in areas not yet inventoried under the new framework, the Policy instructed BLM to
inventory apparent wilderness characteristics, and then discuss the proposed project s effects to them
as well as measures to minimize those effects in a NEPA analysis. (Brumfield, v.44, I1) The article
then describes each area in its own section, section A is Inventory, section B is Land Use Planning,
and section C is Project Level Decisions. In section VI the Death and Afterlife of the Wild Lands
Policy is discussed in detail. She talks about how the policy sparked immediate protest and legal
challenges. In April 2011 the opposition to the Wild Lands Policy took full effect. There was a
congressional rider put into place that prohibited the use of funds to implement the policy. Then

Pathological Gambling In The Uk
According to national surveys, 73% of British adults wagered on gambling activities (including
National Lottery) in 2010 [2]. In some instances, this behaviour can become problematic and is
characterised by persistent gambling that precedes gambling related harms [6]. Whilst personal
accounts of disordered gambling behaviour and harms related to specific gambling products have
garnered a large amount of media exposure and research interest in the UK, the provision and
understanding of treatment seeking behaviour has received less attention. Conservative estimates
indicate that approximately 1% of the UK population report gambling behaviour that warrants a

Stereotypes And Perception Of A Worldview
Introduction In our first class we discussed that a worldview acts as a filter through which we
understand and perceive phenomena (Koltko Rivera, 8). This discussion was very important, as
understanding the meaning of the term worldviews laid the foundation on which the following classes
could be built upon. We don t see things as they are, we see them as we are (Koltko Rivera, 3) was the
statement that stood out most for me, it explained how we are each shaped by our own personal
experiences and therefore we each have our own unique way of viewing the world. Stereotypes play a
huge part in our worldview, they aren t necessarily a bad thing but they aren t exactly good either.
Stereotypes are a widely believed, oversimplified idea or belief of a particular type of person, people
or thing (Online Oxford dictionary). As people living in South Africa, we come into contact with
people from other cultures on a daily basis, so it is of vital importance that we are able to identify
stereotypes as stereotypes, and challenge and change them if the need be. I think worldviews are an
amazing thing, as much as it can be a conflict causing issue, it also allows us to gain knowledge and
helps us understand and empathize with other people. Engaging with different people with different
worldviews allow us to change the filters through which we view phenomena and see them in a new,
different light. Gender Worldviews Before this class, I had considered feminism to be a bad thing.

Acidity The Natural Way
Acidity The Natural Way Stomach acids are essential for the digestion of food. Increased secretion of
acids in the stomach gives rise to acidity. Acidity is manifested by several uncomfortable symptoms
such as burning and pain in the chest and stomach; nausea; bitter taste in mouth; vomiting and
discomfort in the stomach. Acidity, been one of the commonest digestive complaints. At some point in
our lives, we have all suffered from these symptoms. Acidity is generally stimulated by consumption
of spicy foods, junk food, carbonated drinks, fried foods, chocolates, stress or lack of sleep. Obesity,
pregnancy and other medical conditions may also give rise to acidity. Irrespective of the reason,
acidity can prove to be an uncomfortable experience. There are several natural remedies that work
wonders in keeping acidity at bay and also in providing relief from acidity. Though, chronic acidity
complaints may require proper medications. Some of natural remedies are as follows: Bananas They
prove to be an effective antidote for acidity, as it has a high pH value. More the pH value, lesser are
the symptoms of acidity. Banana further, enhances the production of mucous by the stomach lining
which reduces the harmful effects of acidity. The high fibre content of banana decreases the recurrence
of acidity. Apart from banana, watermelon and cucumbers too are effective against acidity.

Manifestations Of Sacred Reality
Manifestations of Sacred Reality Throughout every type of religion or faith based belief system, there
are overlapping characteristics that all work to validate the religion. Two of these elements universally
presented in any religion are the aspect of a sacred reality and the manifestations of such in
hierophanies. Sacred reality collectively validates the religion, giving it some deeper meaning on a
spiritual level. Hierophanies are manifestations of sacred reality, meaning they are physical objects
through which the sacred presents itself (Livingston 43). Different types of hierophanies further break
down sacred reality into categories to understand it. These include sacred persons, sacred time, sacred
places, and sacred objects (43). Specifically, sacred persons and places exemplify different aspects of
sacred reality that have personally impacted my life through my Christian faith. Sacred reality, as
stated before, acts as a means of validating a religion on a spiritual level. It can be broken into four
distinct characteristics that all coincide to show the extraordinary qualities of the sacred, (CITATION
FROM BOOK). The first characteristic is that sacred reality is specially distinctive, or set apart from
the world. This suggests that a spiritual world exists completely set apart from the physical, human
world. Most religions worldwide believe in some aspect of an afterlife or some journey to a stage of
enlightenment where this sacred reality exists, separate from

The Organizational Culture Of The Beef Industry
1. Introduction When the Beef industry took a hit about ten years ago, one company who was able to
stabilize itself in the rocky market was KBJ Beef Processing Equipment. The question now that they
have successfully implemented a new system into stabilizing their business, is how do they begin to
thrive in it? Currently, the system they have implemented is much more effective than the prior. One
key to the new system was the idea of reduced roles. This was key strategy because it allowed the
company to consolidate and focus on themselves rather than worry about the market. Instead of
panicking, they looked inward to discover the key to surviving in a sinking market. 2. What are the

main reason Suede implemented this structure was because the efficiency of the company was not

Supply Of Supply Chain Management Essay
Supply Chain Management involves the process of managing, monitoring, controlling and constantly
coordinating supply related activities among manufacturers, suppliers, wholesalers, retailer and the
consumers. All this is done while integrating supply management with demand management, not only
within but also across companies. Since all the processes involved in managing supply chain activities

Historical Analysis
Christopher Marlowe born in Canterbury, England his exact birth date is not known which why it is
based when he received his baptism in 1564. Marlowe was a poet and playwright who was very
prominent in the dramatic renaissance in the 16th century. Marlowe was a University graduate with a
bachelor s of arts. He tried to obtain his Masters, but the University gave him a hard time in doing so.
His first plays were performed in the late 1580 s and were quite successful in Elizabethan Theatre.
Near the end of his life, Marlow got in trouble with the law when he was accused of a crime; the crime
being atheism and blasphemy. He was later killed during a fight in 1593 by Ingram Frizer when he
stabbed him in the forehead. Marlowe was a very young playwright for his time. Because he died at
age 29, his literary career lasted less than six years. Dr. Faustus was his most popular written work
which ensured his legacy for centuries to come. His influences and inspirations for the tragedy of
Faustus were based on older German legends. The origin of Faustus came from a Latin term which
meant fortunate or lucky. It was also rumored that Faustus was the brother in law to the devil. The
play was written in blank verse and pros, which became popular by Marlow himself. Marlow s work is
the first time the tale was told in play form because it took the legend and used it to it

Borders of life and lands Gregory
Boca Chica is municipality of the Dominican Republic, located upon the island of Hispaniola in the
Gulf of Chiriquí. The history of conflict between the Dominican side of the island (influenced by
Spanish colonial rule) and the Western Haitian side is long standing, dating back to the 1880 s. Upon
the modern day landscape there is an imaginary line which divides Hispaniola into a land of two
countries. One side of which is Haiti and the other the Dominican Republic. It is on the Dominican
side where Gregory focuses his ethnography.
Through anecdotal interviews bureaucratic and social borders are described, which not only exclude
and disempower the Haitian residents of the country, but which also also alienate citizens of
Dominican descent due to their financial state. Dominican parents are required to register the birth of a
child at office of Civil Registry so as to be issued with a birth certificate. When the child reaches the
age of eighteen, this certificate can than be exchanged for an adult cédula , which is required for
voting, securing formal employment and obtaining licenses and other documents. However, many

Communication Is The Way Of A Nurse s Role
Reflective Essay
Communication is the way in which people can send and receive messages. The Directions Service
believes that there are arguably three components of communication; verbal, non verbal, and para
verbal. It would seem that verbal and non verbal are separate and defined methods, which
subsequently links into the third component of communication, being the para verbal method. This
refers to the tone, pacing and volume of our voices , which arguably links into both of the earlier
methods.
Over 60% of our communication is non verbal, which consists mainly of body language conditions
such as eye contact, posture, facial expressions, and gestures. An important aspect of a nurse s role
according to Lavender, is to develop clarity as senders of communication messages and in the
development of sensitive comprehension as receivers , meaning both parties must be able to
understand the information being sent and a nurse must receive information so that the wellbeing of
others is in constant consideration in a professional manner.
In the assessment, guided role play videos were recorded to determine how different communication
approaches affected behaviour change. Two skills of communication were explored; persuasive
communication and eliciting communication.
The persuasive approach is executed with instruction and advice being told to a patient and urging
them a certain direction. In reverse, eliciting communication consists of open questions used to guide

continues to add comedy by saying, All right Joey, be nice. So does he have a hump, a hump and a
hair piece? Then, with concern in her voice, Phoebe Buffay asks, Wait, does he eat chalk? Because I

The group of friends encounter many difficulties when trying to be successful in the city, and go
through numerous awkward situations too. The plot of the sitcom Friends is one of the main reasons
that the sitcom lasted a long time. An article titled 5 Generic TV Sitcom Plots That Will Never Die
claimed that the five generic TV sitcom plots that will never die are working together, when friends
and relatives become involved, pregnancy problems, annoying friends, and when the one that got
away returns ( 5 Generic TV 1). Friends includes every single one of these situations. The friends
Phoebe and Monica work together in a restaurant. This causes problems for Monica because Phoebe
slows the cooking process down. Monica eventually has to figure out a way to fire Phoebe which
causes tension throughout the sitcom. Tension also arose between Chandler and Joey when Joey found
out that Chandler had kissed on of his sisters. Even more tension came about when Joey discovered
that Chandler did not even know the name of the sister he kissed. Another awkward situation included
in the sitcom is when Ross and Rachel face pregnancy problems. When Rachel and Ross had a fling,
Rachel became pregnant. They had been in a relationship before, but found out that their combination
could never work. Because the two were

Chinese and Japanese Immigrants and the California Dream...
In the 1850 s, Chinese immigrants began entering California in search of gold and the California
dream. They had heard that California was the new frontier, a frontier that would provide them with
the opportunity for economic riches. Young and ambitious, many of these Chinese immigrants quickly
married in their homeland and set out for the gold rush, promising to return (with wealth). Likewise,
in the 1880s, when the state of California was undergoing rapid economic transformation, Japanese
immigrants just as young and ambitious as their Chinese counterparts set out for America where they
had heard the streets were paved with gold. But little did these Chinese and Japanese immigrants
know that what they would discover in California ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Often, these store owners provided rice, noodles, and vegetables not available in Euro American stores
and supplemented the workers diet with vegetables grown by local Chinese truck gardeners and meat
from pigs, ducks, and chickens raised by Chinese farmers (Chan 1991). While such an association
between early store owners and the Chinese laborers can hardly be called a community, their
relationship filled a vital social and economic niche that was often lacking for most early non white
immigrants.
Japanese immigration into California followed quite a different pattern. Needing cheap labor in order
to maximize their profits, Hawaiian sugar plantation owners sent agents abroad to recruit workers.
Consequently, some 39,000 Japanese went to work in sugar plantations on three year contracts only to
later discover the strains and hazards of working in what historians of Hawaii have labeled industrial
plantations an efficient, large scale system that enabled the yield per acre to increase from just under
6,600 pounds in 1895 to almost 8,700 pounds in 1900 (Cole 1973). But in 1900, the Organic Law
made Hawaii a formal U.S. territory, ending the entry of contract laborers while declaring all contracts
null and void in Hawaii. As a result, labor recruiters from the mainland descended on Hawaii to lure
the Japanese workers away with the prospect

Folk Music Research Paper
Folk Rock music is my favorite genre to listen to, such as the Lumineers, Mumford and Sons, and
Judah and the Lion. Folk Rock music is a blend between folk music that is blended with rock and pop;
it was created in the 1960 s when it started out with two different artists, Bob Dylan the Band, and the
Byrd s. The folk revival of the 1960s is often the starting point of fascination with the style for many
contemporary folk fans. One big effect of the 60s folk revival was that it marked the beginning of
folksingers, on a large scale, writing their own material. Since in folk rock, most are
singer/songwriters, instruments that are typically used are electric guitar, electric bass and drums.
Some bands, such as Judah and the Lion, will also add ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Country music is interesting to me since it is a genre where a bunch of different genres originated
from such as folk rock, the similarity of the style to folk rock and bluegrass, and also that most
country artists write and sing their own pieces. Country music was developed right here in the USA
down in the south in the 1920 s, being that was the first ever recording. It is also one of the firsts of
popular modern American music. In the 1930 s and 1940 s before the television was invented, it was
common that American families would sit around a radio to listen to entertainment, and one of the
most popular programs was a live country show called the Grand Ole Opry . It was based out of
Nashville, which we all know as the home of country music. Back then people would listen to what
was called Western music which would have a bunch of clicks and clacks and sound like a horse like
beat and would have singing cowboys. In the early 1950 s another kind of country music developed
and it was known as bluegrass, and the later in the 1960 s country rock began to appear since the
country genre was being beat out by rock bands (and this is also when my favorite, Folk Rock,
became about.) During this time is also when other genres began to come about such as Folk Rock and
Country Pop. Instruments that are typically used in the country genre are pretty much all string
instruments such as the acoustic guitar, the banjo, the mandolin, and even the

Possible Solutions To Desalination In California
California is having a drought and the Carlsbad plant thinks they have a way to fix this problem.
Desalination is there solution to fix there drought in California . Desalination is when you take ocean

better ways to get drinking water. each day, 56 million gallons of pacific ocean seawater will be turned
into drinking water for San Diego County. The Carlsbad company is taking 100 million gallons each
day from the ocean. 100 million gallons of ocean water is a lot for each day. There isn t enough

Depression Is A Mood Disorder Which Prevents Individuals
Depression is a mood disorder which prevents individuals from leading a normal life, at work socially
or within their family. Depression also known as Major Depressive Disorder (MMD) is a common and
serious medical illness that negatively affects how you feel, the way you think and how you act, but it
s mental disorder is characterized by a pervasive and persistent low mood that is accompanied by low
self esteem and by a loss of interest or pleasure in normally enjoyable activities. Depression affects an
estimated one in 15 adults in any given year. And one in six people will experience depression at some
time in their life. Depression can strike at any time, but on average, first appears during the late teens
to mid 20s. Women are more ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Dysthymia may also be related to substance use. People with this type of chronic depression may
abuse drugs or alcohol in trying to relieve their hopelessness and other unpleasant symptoms.
Dysthymia in children may sometimes be related to anxiety disorders, learning disorders, attention
deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), conduct disorder, and mental retardation.
A combination of genetic, chemical, biological, psychological, social and environmental factors likely
contributes to the disorder. Depression is often a signal that certain mental, emotional and physical
aspects of a person s life are out of balance. Depression can affect anyone even a person who appears
to live in relatively ideal circumstances. Several factors can play a role in depression such as genetics,
personality, biochemistry and environmental. The causes of clinical depression are likely to be
different for different people. Personal factors, such as complicated life situations, a tragic family
history, childhood traumas, living in stressful environments for a long time, and other similar life
circumstances can lead to depressive conditions. Feldman 2E (2013) mentions that an assessment test
for depression called PHQ 9 was created to help create a general sense of degree of depression a
person was experiencing. The questions were based on your average mood in the last two weeks on
how often you been bothered by a certain problem.

to work out recommendations for the removal of NTBs and for further work in exploring the topic.
It was agreed that the efforts should be concentrated on the four core parties of the Stability Pact, i.e.
Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH), Croatia and Macedonia. A first version of the study was
presented and discussed at a Trade Policy Forum held on 17/18 January 2001 in Geneva. On this
occasion it was decided to complete the study by adding the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (FRY),
including Montenegro, and to up date the facts about the four core parties on the basis of input to be
provided by the countries concerned.
The present final report addresses all the objectives listed in the TOR. Following a brief examination
of the meaning of the term NTB and its handling in trade agreements (chapter II) and a succinct
presentation of the main efforts and projects dealing with such measures in the region (chapter III), the
main emphasis of the report is on the findings and conclusions of the study (chapter IV) and on the
country sheets (chapter V). Chapter IV covers all the countries examined and presents a summary
assessment of relevant basic facts about their economic and trade policy frameworks, general
observations made during the elaboration of the study, and findings concerning NTBs. This is
followed by a set of general conclusions and recommendations. The country sheets in

Evolution of Horror Essays

The Evolution of Horror For centuries, stories of monsters, demons and other unholy abominations
have brought fear to the hearts of audiences in commercially convenient doses. Noel Carroll, Ph.D., in
his article The Nature of Horror , argues that the existence of monsters and supernatural entities alone
do not define a horror novel or film for monsters inhabit all sorts of stories, such as fairy tales, myths,
and odysseys, that we are not wont to identify as horror (Carroll). One can therefore infer that the
absence of such creatures in either media can absolutely still yield a work in the Horror fiction genre.
The genre of Horror draws its roots from many sources. It has, ... Show more content on

It is so cold, Eleanor thought childishly; I will never be able to sleep again with all this noise coming
from inside my head; how can these others hear the noise when it is coming from inside my head? I
am disappearing inch by inch into this house, I am going apart a little bit at a time because all this
noise is breaking me; why are the others frightened? (Jackson 128). Eleanor is Hill House s main
victim; therefore, she can be seen as the women in distress who so often appears in many other Gothic
Horror novels. As the story progresses, one might detect hints of romance between Eleanor and
Theodora; Jackson leaves this facet of the story as vaguely as she does the others, however, and never
elaborates on it. Romance, in itself, is another key factor in establishing Gothic Horror literature.
Though eighteenth century Gothic Horror laid the foundation of Modern Horror, as we know it today,
much of what we are used can be attributed to influences by horror authors in the nineteenth century.
It was during this century when Gothic Horror transformed into the genre of Horror. Horror exploded
with popularity with the publication of Frankenstein (1818) by Mary Shelley. It was during this time
that Horror authors began to incorporate the five human senses to help their audience to imagine the
physical manifestation of fear itself. The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1886) by Robert

ASB 4413 INTERNATIONAL STRATEGIC MANAGMENT
A Report Analysis on the Circular Economy using innovative ideas and different case studies of
manufacturing and service sector.
CONTENTS
Executive summary
Introduction
Definition
A Circular economy as a regenerative system in which resource input and waste, emission, and energy
leakage are minimized by slowing, closing, and narrowing material and energy loops. This can be
achieved through long lasting design, maintenance, repair, reuse, remanufacturing, refurbishing, and
recycling. (Martin Geissdoerfer a, 2017)
Concept
We can state that in Circular economy utilizing old merchandise and utilizing crude material which is
as waste, and it can be replicated and reused by reusing the item by utilizing the imaginative thoughts
remembering that it doesn t influence the earth. This will help everyone to spare cash and it will give
steady employment to individuals to work more in up and coming future. As we probably are aware
we are in the new time of the business world as individuals are presently moving from paper cash to
plastic cash and it is the change time frame for the world economy. Along these lines, same applies to
our items as they require some change on the grounds that the entire world is moving towards the
cutting edge world. Looking beyond the current [take, make and dispose] extractive industrial model,
the circular economy is restorative and regenerative by design . (1.macarthur, 2017) The circular
economy can be explained as using raw materials, recycle it and use new technologies to make more
efficient so that our product can be sustained for long period of time. While we are performing these
task, we can generate more jobs and we require more employees as we are in producing phase, so we
need more and more employees to perform the job. This sector works perfectly because we are
recycling the waste and reproducing it by using different ideas, procedures and technologies to make
our product perfect. (1.macarthur, 2017)

  • 2. African American Shortcomings In America Of course, those Korean immigrants were only fighting for their own economic survival in America, too. Yet the assertion was understandable: during the 1970s and 1980s, deindustrialization, which brought unemployment to the middle class, would only exacerbate the conditions of Los Angeles most impoverished. The few remaining jobs it left to the slums had been seized and hoarded by Korean immigrants. In the reality of the situation, however, African Americans, despite their efforts and an ongoing movement for civil rights, were simply incapable of achieving the same level of entrepreneurial success of Korean Americans during this time period. The reasons for their shortcomings in Koreatown, in addition to lacking higher education and professional job experience many Korean immigrants had at their disposal, were primarily due to the deeply ingrained institution of prejudice against African Americans. African Americans were helplessly vulnerable to racism regardless of how hard they worked, they would struggle to compete with other minority groups. Nevertheless, African Americans continued to criticize Korean Americans as they accumulated the capital and social mobility necessary to move out of Koreatown. The neighborhood had proved itself a valuable tool for Korean entrepreneurial ventures, but it still remained a poor urban slum. Besides thriving Korean businesses, historians Nancy Abelmann and John Lie discovered that Koreatown was home to the highest crime rate in all of Los Angeles, and a median household income which was half the California state average and even lower than that of South Central Los Angeles. Other than to keep families perpetually wary, the district s poor and dangerous conditions served to question Korean businesses for their seemingly nonexistent contributions on the surrounding community. While Korean merchants certainly could have helped raise Koreatown out of poverty, they instead escaped with their families to wealthy suburbs as soon as they had acquired enough capital. These suburban homes might have marked the first milestones for Korean immigrant families, but more importantly, they justified African American claims of stolen economic opportunity and further developed ... One of the most important purposes was to make it easier for the driver to see in front of the train and make sure they were not approaching any obstacles. The headlight was also used to alert anyone ahead that the train was coming. There were several attempts and prototypes of the locomotive headlamps. One that was used for some time after the civil war was a large box that was almost two feet by two feet, with glass in the front. It was sometimes decorated to make it more visually appealing, but it did not last. The one that became the most popular was much smaller and round. To identify the headlamp engine numbers were stamped out of the metal and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the late 1800s many locomotive companies began using electric headlamps instead of oil lamps. There were multiple problems that came with using the electric lights instead of oil. It was very difficult to supply electric power when the train was in a station (Presentation Magazine). The light was extremely bright and made it hard for the drivers of others trains to see when they were arriving at the station. In the early 1900 s the arc lamp was invented and made it much easier for other train drivers to see and it allowed people to safely cross. The headlamp shown in class was made using black metal, possibly iron, with a glass plate in the front which allows the light to pass through it. The glass is on a hinge so it could be opened and closed. The artifact relates to what we are learning because the locomotive industry became one of the largest and most important industries in America for a long time during and after the civil war. The trains were used to transport supplies to the troops all throughout the war, and after the war they were used as transportation for people. • 4. Comparing Dantes Inferno And Chaucer s Canterbury Tales Dante s Inferno and Chaucer s Canterbury Tales are both tremendously significant literary works that are still relevant to this present day. Dante s Inferno depicts one pilgrim being led into the depths of Hell at the hands of a guide named Virgil. As the two descend into Hell, it becomes apparent that Dante has strong religious opinions that influence his placement of several individuals into the various levels of Hell. One thing he makes obvious in his works is that hypocrisy and fraudulence are revolting characteristics. This piece of literature has the tone of darkness and warnings. Because Dante was exiled from his native country of Florence by people who possessed these characteristics, it only seems fair that these people have their own special places in Hell. Chaucer s Canterbury Tales, however, tells many pilgrim s tales as a means to pass time during their voyage to Canterbury. The tale has a lighter tone to it, yet still has some of the same views and convictions as Dante s; such as the disapproval of hypocrites and the drawing attention to fraudulent religious figures. Manjoo s purpose is to convince people that have not joined the networking giant that the benefits of joining Facebook outweigh the arguments to avoid it. He adopts a cogent tone in order address any concerns of the Facebook holdouts. Manjoo opens his article by reciting a message that Mark Zuckerberg posted to the company s blog, which stated that Facebook had reached its 150 millionth member. It was a quintessential moment for the social networking giant, because it demonstrated the popularity and prominence in how people network and stay connected with one another. For comparison purposes, Manjoo states, If Facebook were a country, it would be the eight most populated in the world, just ahead of Japan, Russia and Nigeria (Manjoo, 2009). He estimates that Facebook will grow to nearly 300 million people by this time next year in order to show the continuing popularity and growth of Facebook (Manjoo, 2009). Manjoo was correct in his estimation in terms of growth and has continued since the time of publication of the article. In fact, as of January 2014, the number of monthly individual Facebook users surpassed 1.3 billion ( Facebook statistics, 2014). • 10. Batman And Greek Mythology Myths are everlasting stories that have been passed on for decades. Usually, these stories contain special significance depending on culture and religion. Although there are several types of mythology, Greek mythology is one of the most popular. It was created by the ancient Greeks to serve as a basis for their religious beliefs and cultural practices. Greek myths consist of gods and goddesses, which obtain unique superpowers that permit them to control nature in all of its forms. Furthermore, ancient mythology has inspired contemporary culture by linking similar characteristics to new characters and improved stories. Modern day society has reimagined mythology through superheroes that save the world from villains and crime. Some superheroes have special powers either from birth or from scientific experiments, while others become heroes by training and with the help of modern technology; however, these modifications do not disregard the fact that modern folklore developed from ancient tales. For instance, Batman is the modern interpretation of Achilles because they are an archetype, share several characteristics, and demonstrate the evolution of mythology. To start off, Batman is a modernized version of Achilles. In other words, the Batman character serves as an archetype of Greek mythological hero, Achilles. We have to save our strength to go on. Keav would want us to go on; it is the only way we will survive (Ung, Pg. 100). Ung s father used their mutual loss to promote their survival. Although it is not blatantly expressed, Ung s father had to comprehend his own suffering in order to seek out strategies that would be beneficial to their survival as a family. Yet, even with his own suffering Ung s father found it within himself to encourage his family because he knew that without his encouragement they each would not have been able to survive that situation. Not only did Ung s father help them to recover after Keav s death, but he also helped them to each develop the emotional strength they would need for future reference. After the death of her close friend, Pithy, Ung wrote, In a panic I get up and run after Kim and Chou out of the shelter, away from Pithy. Away from her screaming mother. • 14. Literary Analysis Of Woman In A Purple Coat For this analysis, I will be using Woman In A Purple Coat by Henri Matisse (1937), oil on canvas. 1937 was a turbulent year globally. From the Hindenburg blimp exploding, to the Japanese invasion of China, and the disappearance of Amelia Earhart. Many events happened that year that would forever alter the course of history. Henri Matisse, an eclectic soul, would make his mark upon 1937 as well with Woman In A Purple Coat. This piece would cause all who came before and after him to rethink how they would make their legacy, as Matisse moved the bar to previously unobtainable heights through this work. The first thing you notice in Matisse s painting is the purple coat that Lydia Delectorskaya, his lover of many years, is wearing. This coat, an exotic Moroccan costume, with its bold and vivid color, jumps right out at its viewers. While Lydia reclines for her pose, the vase of flowers and fruit on the table in the foreground become apparent to the audience. As do the bold shapes and patterns that are on the walls, with their incredibly bright colors, outlined with thick lines. The lines Matisse used creates a certain symmetry within the frame. His perspective lines give order and dimension to an otherwise visually busy art work. Henri used bold, thick lines to create definition, even using the back end of the brush to scrape away paint to leave exposed canvas to create his effects. Matisse was a pioneer within his profession. He was often criticized for his lack of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Criteria For A Nobel Prize Criteria for a Nobel Prize in Leadership Alan Weber (2009) wrote an article for the Washington Post, that focused on the criteria that one might use to suggest a nominee. In his article, Weber offered that candidacy for the prize should not be base upon achievement broadly defined, or abstract qualities that can be attributed to leaders, but clear and undeniable moral authority (Weber, 2009, para.1). Cook (2009) added that he would choose a nominee who has pretty much transcended his or her own ego, and who sees humanity as interconnected in a vast system to which we all, ultimately, are contributing (Cook, 2009, para.4). While these points provide a good starting point for selection the development of selection criteria, I have demined that any individual who would be a candidate for a Nobel Prize in Pauline Leadership should be characterized by the following the following: Demonstrated Christ Centered Core Values Unwavering Sense of Mission and Purpose Alignment of Character, Ethics, and Actions (Bradberry Greaves, 2012) Servant Orientation Leads by Example Humility Self Discipline (Lee, 2003) Equipping or Developing Others (Lee, 2003) Lasting Concern for the Broader Community Influence and Impact Explanation of the First Nobel Laureate As Lutheran Pastor, it should not be a surprise that I have chosen the 16th Century Reformer Martin Luther as the first Nobel Laureate in Pauline Leadership. • 18. Attraction In Cross-Sex Relationships Essay Can you be friends with someone you like? The dynamic of cross sex friendships is an interesting area of study and one of which has little data. Moreover, research on this narrow subject is rather limited and comes from fairly old studies. The idea that men and women cannot be just friends, is due to the idea that there must be some aspect of physical and or romantic involved. As Reeder discussed traditional societal norms and expectations of male female relationships have played a role in how we view cross sex friendships today. The literature on cross sex friendships has explored the role of attraction and the impact it has on the dynamics of cross sex relationships. This literature review will investigate the role of attraction on cross sex relationships and whether attraction hinders being friends with someone you like. Further, exploring the various common themes among the literature on attraction in cross sex friendships: the definition of attraction is subjective and there are different types of attraction, attraction tends to confuse the definition of the relationship, men perceive attraction more than women and lastly, attraction indeed is a challenge but not necessarily detrimental. It is hypothesized that attraction creates a significant challenge for those involved in a cross sex relationship. Therefore, once attraction becomes an issue in the relationship, the possibility of the relationship lasting is questionable. The following five studies support the ... The aggression and exploitation that followed, described vividly in Heart of Darkness, has now adapted into more humane mechanisms due to criticism against brutality in the nineteenth century. Examining the texts of Aristotle s Nicomachean Ethics and Politics side by side, one is bound to find parallels between his reasoning with regard to the individual and to the state. In Nicomachean Ethics Aristotle discusses happiness, virtue, and the good life on an individual level and lays out necessary provisions for the good life of a person. He maintains that virtue is a necessary element of happiness: a man will be happy if he has virtues of justice, courage, and temperance, each constituting a balance between the extremes. But this requirement of virtue for the happy life goes beyond the individual level, as we see it in Politics . There, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Therefore, the mean relative to us is not one, and is not the same for everyone . With respect to this, Aristotle states that virtue seeks the mean relative to us, and this is how each science produces its product well : by focusing on what is intermediate and making the product conform to that. A well made product will be that to which nothing can be added or taken away without making it worse, since it assumes that excess or deficiency ruins a good result, while the mean preserves it. And just like good craftsmen focus on an intermediate when they produce a product, one should aim at intermediate in regard to virtue. Thus we see that virtue is to be achieved by concentrating on the optimal mean between the extremes of deficiency and excess. But the discussion of virtue would be incomplete if one did not investigate its role with respect to the object possessing virtue and its effect on that object. Since Aristotle defines virtue as a state that decides the optimal mean relative to us, he asserts that every virtue causes its possessors to be in a good state and to perform their functions well; the virtue of eyes, e.g., makes the eyes and their functioning excellent, because it makes us see well , and this is argued to be true in the case of all objects. At this point, the role of virtue with respect to the object is apparent: something will be functioning at the best level only if it reaches an ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Wild Lands Policy is described in detail in section V. The article first describes the three ways the new Wild Lands Policy was to work. The first way was it affirmed that the agency should consider wilderness values as an integral component of its multiple use mission, identifying lands with wilderness characteristics (LWC) in its mandatory section 201 inventories. Second, the Policy directed BLM to use its section 202 land use planning authority to consider designating appropriate LWC as Wild Lands, that is, lands that the agency would protect in amended RMPs by avoiding impairment to their wilderness characteristics. Third, for project level decisions in areas not yet inventoried under the new framework, the Policy instructed BLM to inventory apparent wilderness characteristics, and then discuss the proposed project s effects to them as well as measures to minimize those effects in a NEPA analysis. (Brumfield, v.44, I1) The article then describes each area in its own section, section A is Inventory, section B is Land Use Planning, and section C is Project Level Decisions. In section VI the Death and Afterlife of the Wild Lands Policy is discussed in detail. She talks about how the policy sparked immediate protest and legal challenges. • 26. Stereotypes And Perception Of A Worldview Introduction In our first class we discussed that a worldview acts as a filter through which we understand and perceive phenomena (Koltko Rivera, 8). This discussion was very important, as understanding the meaning of the term worldviews laid the foundation on which the following classes could be built upon. We don t see things as they are, we see them as we are (Koltko Rivera, 3) was the statement that stood out most for me, it explained how we are each shaped by our own personal experiences and therefore we each have our own unique way of viewing the world. Stereotypes play a huge part in our worldview, they aren t necessarily a bad thing but they aren t exactly good either. Stereotypes are a widely believed, oversimplified idea or belief of a particular type of person, people or thing (Online Oxford dictionary). As people living in South Africa, we come into contact with people from other cultures on a daily basis, so it is of vital importance that we are able to identify stereotypes as stereotypes, and challenge and change them if the need be. I think worldviews are an amazing thing, as much as it can be a conflict causing issue, it also allows us to gain knowledge and helps us understand and empathize with other people. Engaging with different people with different worldviews allow us to change the filters through which we view phenomena and see them in a new, different light. Manifestations Of Sacred Reality Manifestations of Sacred Reality Throughout every type of religion or faith based belief system, there are overlapping characteristics that all work to validate the religion. Two of these elements universally presented in any religion are the aspect of a sacred reality and the manifestations of such in hierophanies. Sacred reality collectively validates the religion, giving it some deeper meaning on a spiritual level. Hierophanies are manifestations of sacred reality, meaning they are physical objects through which the sacred presents itself (Livingston 43). Different types of hierophanies further break down sacred reality into categories to understand it. These include sacred persons, sacred time, sacred places, and sacred objects (43). Specifically, sacred persons and places exemplify different aspects of sacred reality that have personally impacted my life through my Christian faith. Sacred reality, as stated before, acts as a means of validating a religion on a spiritual level. It can be broken into four distinct characteristics that all coincide to show the extraordinary qualities of the sacred, (CITATION FROM BOOK). The first characteristic is that sacred reality is specially distinctive, or set apart from the world. This suggests that a spiritual world exists completely set apart from the physical, human world. • 42. Chinese and Japanese Immigrants and the California Dream... In the 1850 s, Chinese immigrants began entering California in search of gold and the California dream. They had heard that California was the new frontier, a frontier that would provide them with the opportunity for economic riches. Young and ambitious, many of these Chinese immigrants quickly married in their homeland and set out for the gold rush, promising to return (with wealth). Likewise, in the 1880s, when the state of California was undergoing rapid economic transformation, Japanese immigrants just as young and ambitious as their Chinese counterparts set out for America where they had heard the streets were paved with gold. But little did these Chinese and Japanese immigrants know that what they would discover in California ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Often, these store owners provided rice, noodles, and vegetables not available in Euro American stores and supplemented the workers diet with vegetables grown by local Chinese truck gardeners and meat from pigs, ducks, and chickens raised by Chinese farmers (Chan 1991). While such an association between early store owners and the Chinese laborers can hardly be called a community, their relationship filled a vital social and economic niche that was often lacking for most early non white immigrants. Japanese immigration into California followed quite a different pattern. Needing cheap labor in order to maximize their profits, Hawaiian sugar plantation owners sent agents abroad to recruit workers. Consequently, some 39,000 Japanese went to work in sugar plantations on three year contracts only to later discover the strains and hazards of working in what historians of Hawaii have labeled industrial plantations an efficient, large scale system that enabled the yield per acre to increase from just under 6,600 pounds in 1895 to almost 8,700 pounds in 1900 (Cole 1973). But in 1900, the Organic Law made Hawaii a formal U.S. territory, ending the entry of contract laborers while declaring all contracts null and void in Hawaii. As a result, labor recruiters from the mainland descended on Hawaii to lure the Japanese workers away with the prospect ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 43. Folk Music Research Paper Folk Rock music is my favorite genre to listen to, such as the Lumineers, Mumford and Sons, and Judah and the Lion. Folk Rock music is a blend between folk music that is blended with rock and pop; it was created in the 1960 s when it started out with two different artists, Bob Dylan the Band, and the Byrd s. The folk revival of the 1960s is often the starting point of fascination with the style for many contemporary folk fans. One big effect of the 60s folk revival was that it marked the beginning of folksingers, on a large scale, writing their own material. Since in folk rock, most are singer/songwriters, instruments that are typically used are electric guitar, electric bass and drums. Some bands, such as Judah and the Lion, will also add ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Country music is interesting to me since it is a genre where a bunch of different genres originated from such as folk rock, the similarity of the style to folk rock and bluegrass, and also that most country artists write and sing their own pieces. Country music was developed right here in the USA down in the south in the 1920 s, being that was the first ever recording. It is also one of the firsts of popular modern American music. In the 1930 s and 1940 s before the television was invented, it was common that American families would sit around a radio to listen to entertainment, and one of the most popular programs was a live country show called the Grand Ole Opry . It was based out of Nashville, which we all know as the home of country music. Back then people would listen to what was called Western music which would have a bunch of clicks and clacks and sound like a horse like beat and would have singing cowboys. In the early 1950 s another kind of country music developed and it was known as bluegrass, and the later in the 1960 s country rock began to appear since the country genre was being beat out by rock bands (and this is also when my favorite, Folk Rock, became about.) During this time is also when other genres began to come about such as Folk Rock and Country Pop. Instruments that are typically used in the country genre are pretty much all string instruments such as the acoustic guitar, the banjo, the mandolin, and even the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Evolution of Horror Essays Joshua An 71811473 Writing 39B 18 April 2013 The Evolution of Horror For centuries, stories of monsters, demons and other unholy abominations have brought fear to the hearts of audiences in commercially convenient doses. Noel Carroll, Ph.D., in his article The Nature of Horror , argues that the existence of monsters and supernatural entities alone do not define a horror novel or film for monsters inhabit all sorts of stories, such as fairy tales, myths, and odysseys, that we are not wont to identify as horror (Carroll). One can therefore infer that the absence of such creatures in either media can absolutely still yield a work in the Horror fiction genre. The genre of Horror draws its roots from many sources. It has, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I am disappearing inch by inch into this house, I am going apart a little bit at a time because all this noise is breaking me; why are the others frightened? (Jackson 128). Eleanor is Hill House s main victim; therefore, she can be seen as the women in distress who so often appears in many other Gothic Horror novels. As the story progresses, one might detect hints of romance between Eleanor and Theodora; Jackson leaves this facet of the story as vaguely as she does the others, however, and never elaborates on it. Romance, in itself, is another key factor in establishing Gothic Horror literature. Though eighteenth century Gothic Horror laid the foundation of Modern Horror, as we know it today, much of what we are used can be attributed to influences by horror authors in the nineteenth century. It was during this century when Gothic Horror transformed into the genre of Horror. Horror exploded with popularity with the publication of Frankenstein (1818) by Mary Shelley. It was during this time that Horror authors began to incorporate the five human senses to help their audience to imagine the physical manifestation of fear itself.
