Waltham Motors Division Case
Managerial Accounting Case Waltham Motors Division
Answer 1: Breakeven point
If Waltham Motors Division sells 13,326 units, it will breakeven. But why Waltham incurred net
losses when it sold more than 13,326 units in May? The unfavorable cost variances (see answer 2
and 3) and Waltham s high operating leverage were major reasons for its financial problems.
Waltham s operating leverage is 3.85 times, which indicates that the operating income is very
sensitive to changes in sales.
Answer 2: Total cost per unit
The budgeted cost per unit is $42.93, and the actual cost per unit is $49.51. When figuring the cost
per unit, we include all the cost, including selling and administration costs. The actual cost per unit

* Manufacturing costs for the actual output produced were higher than budgeted direct material by
$1,400, direct manufacturing labor by $22,000, variable manufacturing overhead by $9,756, and
fixed overhead by $1,200.
To gain further insight, we subdivide the flexible budget variance for direct cost inputs into more
detailed variances as following:
Price variance * The $4,200 favorable direct materials price variance could be because of skillful
negotiation skills of purchasing manager on direct materials, a change to a lower price supplier,
a decrease in market price of direct material, and potentially lower quality materials. * The $5,600
unfavorable direct manufacturing labor price variance could be because of an increase in market
price of direct labor or, poor negotiation skills of purchasing manager or human resource manager
on direct labor costs.
Efficiency variance * The $5,600 unfavorable direct materials efficiency variance and the $16,400
unfavorable direct manufacturing labor efficiency variance could be because of unskilled workers,
poor production schedule, or poor machine maintenance.
We also subdivide the variable costs overhead variance and fixed costs overhead variance into more
detailed variances as following:
Variable overhead variance * The unfavorable $9,756 variable manufacturing overhead variance
arises probably because of the difference

Art As An Obscenity
Art as obscenity and the argument
What defines something as obscene? More over, what does the term obscenity mean? The
interpretation of the word has differed in communities; styles and scenes whether it is unacceptable
or favorable a great deal of arguable queries have arisen not only in the art community but most of
the population. Obscenity is a constitutionally unprotected form of speech (About Us Art Law
Library: Obscenity. Avaliable at: http://ncac.org/resource/art law library obscenity) although
obscenity may be examined cautiously by few, the issue around the interpretation is deliberated
in today s court system regularly. The Hicklin or also known as the Roth test first declared a
legal examination in 1868 to be conducted for obscenity, the court held that all material tending to
deprave and corrupt those whose minds are open to such immoral influences was obscene,
regardless of its artistic history. (Ducat, C.R. (2008) p.540) It was also decided that to be declared
obscene one must or ones work must lack serious literary, artistic, political, or scientific value
(Waxman, O. (2016) Time) The later decision to retire the Hitchin law reasoning stated by Justice
William, J. Brennan JR settled that the opinion of obscenity is utterly without redeeming social
importance (West s Encyclopedia of American Law, edition 2. The Gale Group) which in response
to that meant it was no longer protected by the First Amendment. 1996 The Supreme Court

How Did Alfred Hitchcock Turn Into Blockbuster Films
Alfred Hitchcock s journey to international filmmaking stardom started small but ended with him
being considered the best director of the 20th century. Alfred directed many films throughout his

A Report On Aluminum Recycling
Aluminum recycling is the process by which scrap aluminum is reprocessed to be used in products
after its initial production. Aluminum producers and recyclers in the aluminum industry work with
individuals, businesses, and communities to enable both curbside and industrial recycling
programs. For most aluminum products, the metal is not consumed during the products lifetime,
but it is simply used making it easy to recycle without losing its intrinsic properties. Used beverage
container (UBC) recyclingis the most recognized of the aluminum recycling programs. However,
end of life recycling of certain products like building parts and cars allows for the production of
recycled materials like window frames, wire, tubing and electronic parts. The following is step by
step process of aluminum recycling:
Collection of Scrap Aluminum
Drinks cans, aluminum foil trays, and aerosol cans are collected from homes, streets and garbage
collection centres by hired individuals or business people who major in aluminum collection. They
are sometimes mixed with steel cans. The scrap aluminum is then collected together and then it is
transported to the treatment plant.
Sorting
The mixed metals (aluminum and steel cans) are taken to a materials recovery facility where they
are cleaned, sorted into different metal streams and later compressed into bales. This step is very
important in ensuring that the aluminum is separated from other metals. It is important to point out
that drink cans

Authenticity In Life Of Pi
In our everyday lives, the words that come out of our mouths are our natural understanding to
communicate with each other. Words explain the necessities and response we seek out for.
Needless to say, human life deeply revolves around an orbit of personal and collective narrative
interpretations that explain our ways of life the principles of storytelling if you will. The Life of
Pi, written by Yann Martel, is about a young boy that goes on a life changing journey on the
Pacific Ocean in the account of a first person narrative. At the end of the novel, Pi is questioned by
two Japanese officials that confront him about the fate of the boat. The reader should understand
that the stories are emphasized and tackled from the viewpoints of not only Pi, but as well as the

The Mountain Meadows Massacre
In September of 1857, roughly 120 members of the Baker Fancher party a California bound wagon
train from Arkansas decided to set up camp in Mountain Meadows, Utah Territory. The newly
arrived settlers were denied water access and grazing land by the LDS throughout Utah, and thus
welcomed the lush pastures and pristine streams of Mountain Meadows. However, unbeknownst to
them, an increasingly malevolent Mormon presence planned on retributive bloodshed. On
September 7, a branch of Mormon militia known as the Nauvoo Legion disguised themselves as
Paiute Indians and, along with the alleged aid of several actual Paiutes, attacked the Baker Fancher
party. Despite being significantly outnumbered by the Mormon Native war party, the settlers... Show

Those moving from big cities to smaller cities like College Station could have trouble adjusting to
the lifestyle and surrounding environment at first. Since College Station and Bryan cities are
mainly the second home to thousands of college students, therefore, city planners did not focus
much on the entertainment aspect for the people that live here. The main entertainment that college
students would be able to enjoy around here is going to the cinema during the weekends. Unlike

After observing and collecting the demographic data using U.S. Census, we then compared the
data to the city of Austin s demographic data. By comparing the City of College Station and
Bryan to the city of Austin, urban planners would be able to determine whether Dave and Buster s
would be successful if they open a new location here. The reason that Austin was used as the
standard measurement was because there is a Dave and Buster s in Austin that is successfully
attract people from a variety range of age.
First, we looked at the areas population. Based on the U.S. Census collected in 2010, the total
population in the city of College Station is 93,857 people and the total population in the city of
Bryan is 76,201 people. Compared to Austin, the combined population of both the City of College
Station and the City of Bryan is approximately six times the Austin s population. Based on this
factor alone, we could say that the Dave and Buster s does have the potential of being successful in
the areas of College Station and Bryan. However, other factors should be taken in consideration
before making any final decision.
The second factor that we used is the age groups among the cities. Looking at different age groups
in the community is critical because businesses are often provide services to only a certain amount
of age groups. For example, it is not appropriate to have an amusement park in a community where

Analysis Of The Book The Of Wyoming
In the northern part of Wyoming there is a park that holds a long history, both good and bad.
Stories of spirits come from the park and one of the stories is centered around one of the hotels
in the park. Whispers of a poorly wronged soul who wanders the hotel and while normally a
peaceful spirit, she is still capable of violence. Though we will discuss this later. In the frigid
Winter, the year of which escapes my knowledge, a young manand few of his friends stayed at the
hoteland left with an experience they ll never forget or never want to recall.
The young man, who we ll call Smith to protect his identity, recounted to me the following tale
of the Winter vacation that, as he said, could not even have gotten worse. At the time Smith was
a very healthy lad of 26 who was spending his winter break with his four friends (I ll use alternate
names for them as well). The first of his friends was a tall well built man we ll call Jack, he, like
Smith, was a healthy young man though Jack was a few months shy of Smith s age. As well as
physical strength, Jack was also highly intelligent, reading a complex math problem like a child
would their children s book. Smith s next friend was a beautiful young woman who ll be referred
to as Jane. Jane was a nature enthusiast who chose to go to Yellowstone for Winter break. She
also cared deeply for Smith, as did many Girls, though Jane s feelings were the strongest and purest
for him. His last friend was a man we ll say is called John.

The Cholera Spread In London In The 19th Century
The cholera has been the most terrifying disease spreading in London in the middle of nineteenth
century, which is an infection caused by strains of the bacterium Vibrio cholerae. In the
summertime of 1854 London was known as one of the most advanced and fashionable cities in
the world with almost 2.5 million people living there. Because of the overpopulation, the city was
having a difficult time to provide basic needs for the residents. According to Johnson (2006) the
biggest existing problem within the city at that time was its lack of waste removal system. The
human trash was piling up from the houses to the rivers and drinking water, which has led to the
perfect conditions for a number of diseases and more precisely that is when the cholera... Show

After interviewing more people who had relatives died, Snow find out that many people drank
water from Broad Street Pump on their way to work or school. Johnson (2006) says, Many Soho
residents who lived closer to other pumps one on Rupert Street and another on Little
Marlborough opted to walk an extra few blocks for the refreshing taste of Broad Street`s water. It
was colder than the water found at the rival pumps; it had a pleasant hint of carbonation (p.30).
He also discovered that there was not a single death recorded among the workers at Lion
Brewery on Broad Street. They were rarely seen to drink water from the pump because of the
liquor they received as a part of their wages (Johnson, 2006, p.142). Another important
observation Snow has made is about the death of the widow Susanna Eley who used to live in
Broad Street, but after a while she moved to Hampstead (Johnson, 2006, p.143). By asking her
sons Snow found out that she drank the Broad Street water as she loved it taste and even more,
she had it delivered to the new house. After collecting all this information Snow had strong
evidence that the source of the cholera outbreak was exactly the Broad Street pump. He came up
with a plan how to deal with the cholera outbreak and went to the Board of St. James Parish where

Slide 1: Introduction/Pocahontas face
Pocahontas and John Smith may be the most famous and best known part of history of the original

This is a very important time in the history of our country, and we have little documentation

This means a significant part of the curriculum is out of reach for many of these immigrants.
Classical literature such as Shakespeare, Homer, and Faulkner, to name a few, have become the
customary literature books used in schools. American education, in many cases, has denied our
diverse population the use of these great books. Many students struggle with classical literature
because it is irrelevant in their lives. Classical literature must be taught with student s diversity in
mind. If a person is not from the Dominant Culture, he or she will have little or no interest in the
great books described above since these books were written for and by this culture.
Motivating the diverse culture of students in today s schools requires sparking their interest. Social
historian Elizabeth Ewen wrote it is what we are excited about that educates us. (Rose, 106) Mike
Rose became interested in the classics, or great books, through Jack McFarland, a high school
teacher. Mr. McFarland influenced Rose through accepting him, developing a relationship with him,
and being understanding. With such diversity in our schools, educators must have a basic
understanding of their students background and skill levels in order to better explain and teach the
students of different backgrounds within their classrooms.
Diversity in our society is here to stay. Therefore educational systems need to find innovative ways

The Ethical Theory Of Ethical Egoism
Ethical egoism is defined roughly by stating how people do things or react to what is in their best
interest. This theory gets its meaning because the word egoism derives from the Latin term ego ,
meaning I in English (Moseley). The motivation of ethical egoism depends on how the situation
will act upon one s self interest. In this paper, I am going to defend and explain that babies are
born with moralityof the ethical egoismtheory. Ethical egoismstands out from the rest of the
ethical theories, due to the fact, that it focuses on the individual and how it will benefit them
and only them. People who do not go out of their way to help others unless it benefits them are
known as, ethical egoists. People following the ethical egoism theory typically are looking out
what is better for them. For example, a person invites her friend to go to the store late at night
because she is afraid to go alone since crime is high in the area, she is thinking of her own safety
first not so much her friends safety. Is being an ethical egoist a bad morality? The answer to the
question is simply, no. We in fact are born as an ethical egoist. As babies, we are after our own
self interest, not others, because we do not know any better at such a young age. In a way we all
have a part of ethical egoism in our morals since we all start out as an ethical egoist when we are
born. We are not taught to act in our own self interest it just comes natural. When babies cry

study hall is needed is, that it s good for making up missed work. If people get their missed work

Residence Fellow Personal Statement
I want to be a residence fellow because of the experiences I have had in residence. In my
personal experience, being unbiased is very important to being a Residence Fellow. In my year
in residence I had issues with my roommates, but my RF was friends with my roommates. Due to
this connection, I feel that when it came to finding a solution the RF was not unbiased and did
not hear my side of the story. I want to be a residence fellow to help solve people s issues in an

Social And Cultural Events In The 20th And 21st Century
Education has been affected greatly by social and cultural events of the 20th and 21st centuries.
Because education follows the moves of society, the need for new skills in life and in the
workplace change and students can be career and college ready. This, however, has not always
been the case. The first of two main cultural and social events focused on are the events that led up
to the Brown vs. the Board of EducationSupreme Court case, which resulted in the desegregation of
schools. The second are the effects that the Great Recession had on the education system. In the
1940s the Civil Rights Movement began gaining strength and the country began moving slowly to
desegregation. In 1947, in the face of much opposition, Jackie Robinson became the first African
Americanbaseball player. When he traveled to the south he was denied access into hotels,
restaurants, and other venues because of this race. Because Robinson was in the army the armed
forces became desegregated in 1948 and eventually led to the elimination of segregated schools
(Schwartz, 2003). During this era African American students were in separate but equal schools
although many black schools suffered from poor facilities and a lack of funding and other
amenities that were provided at white schools. Black students were often bussed great distances to
attend school. In 1952, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People
(NAACP) lawyers represented the case Brown vs. the Board of education. This case dealt with
the right of a black child to attend an all white school close to her home instead of being bussed
across town to the all black school. Initially, the ruling was in favor of the Board of Education, but
the adverse effects of separate but equal schooling on the black community were clearly shown
(Schwartz, 2003). African Americans were also held back by not having the right to vote. A
literacy exam was required to be passed in order to vote. Because of their schooling restrictions,
many African Americans were illiterate, which denied them of the right to vote. A workshop for the
United Nations drew several community members and teachers from the south (Horton, Freire,
1990). One member who attended

What s Merica Without Meat
A man and his son make their way through the dark on a cool fall morning. The fog lies over the
hills like a thick blanket. The man and his son talk about the things that have happened in recent
times and share memories from years past, too. The morning continues, and as time passes, the two
realize that this will be an experience to remember for many years to come. Countless generations
throughout the ages have shared the tradition of hunting. Before the time of modern weapons were
used to kill animals, people hunted. Back in the cavemen days people used sticks and stones to
kill their food for their families. People had no option to hunt, it was the only way their families

Through the efforts of state agencies and conservation groups like Whitetails Unlimited, wildlife
officials estimate today s whitetail population to exceed 30 million. Even though deer hunting can
be helpful, there are some things that need to be looked at and something done about it. To make
sure deer hunting is safe for everyone and done legally, we need to look at what s happening right
now to help, and the causes and effects of deer hunting.
Deer hunting might be known as a sport, but what people don t know is that deer hunting is
really helping the environment and supplying for un wealthy families that can t afford beef
from the stores. Overabundance in deer cost society lots of money due to loss of crops, plants,
and wildlife. Also large herds of deer cause huge numbers of motorist accidents every year
(Whitetail Deer Facts, Info, And Photos). Crops are needed to feed the millions of people on this
earth and without the killing of deer populations most of the crops in the U.S will be eaten or
destroyed by large herds of deer. Most people argue that hunting of deer is not needed due to the
meat and resources in our stores. Our own government places millions of people on the poverty
sector, many of these people hunt and fish because it s a necessity. Most wild game that is shot is
eaten (CSA Why we need hunting). Not all families can afford to buy meat from the stores. Many

In The Story of The Stone(зґ…жЁ“е¤ў) written by Cao Xue qin, we can find another important
function of the dreams which is to reveal the destines of the characters. The Stone was later on
translated as The Dream of the Red Chamber. It could be understood that the whole fiction was

Many scholars tried to identify each sentence to a specific person in the book so that this song
could reveal all the destines of the characters in the book. However, I think it would be a little bit
unreasonable since all the big families in the book finally fade. Thus, I think this song is more
like a general description of the end rather than a specific depiction. While we could still find
some specific depiction that we could be sure of: for example, we know that those indebted for
tears have already (gone) to exhaust their tears is Lin Dai yu. The author used an image of birds
flying back to trees and left behind a void to depict the destines of the Jia s family, which later
also come true in the book where Jia s corrupted and everyone left the mansion. Jia s dream, as a
clue to the final resolution of the story, carried a foreshadowing to what would happen in following

How Does Shakespeare Use Ethos In Julius Caesar
Everyone argues at one point, but the thing we don t realize is that we are using techniques
created hundreds of years ago. The non fiction play The Tragedy Julius Caesar was written by
William Shakespeare, it was initially a play but later turned into a book. In the play, a group of
conspirators create a plan to assassinate the soon to be ruler Julius Caesar. After they murder Julius
Caesar, Brutus and Cassius put together a funeral that the people of Rome attended. At the funeral
two good friends of Caesar, by the names of Brutus and Antony, spoke to the crowd about what will
happen to Rome next. They both use Aristotle s persuasive techniques of ethos, pathos, and logos in
their speeches. Ethos is the persuasion through ethics, pathos is... Show more content on

Pathos is an appeal that twists people emotions. The first example of pathos is during Caeser s
funeral, Antony states When that the poor have cried, Caesar hath wept: Ambition should be
made of sterner stuff (cite). This quote exemplifies pathos because the term cried symbolizes
negative emotion. Hearing this brings out saddened feelings of the people in the audience
because their new leader was murdered. In this quote the underlying message Antony is trying
to convey is that Caesar is weak because the poor are crying; however, Caesar is weeping. The
words Antony uses makes the crowd lean towards Antony because he is playing with their
emotions. There are many examples of pathos in Antony s speech, but one he concludes with is
Bear with me; My heart is in the coffin there with Caesar, And I must pause till it come back to
me (cite). This quote is an example of pathos because it is changing the way the people think of
Antony. This draws the people towards Antony s side because he is convincing the people that he
will always be by Caesar s side and will forever love him, and the people also loved him. Overall,
through the two quotes, one can see Antony appealing to the audience s emotions, to manipulate the
audience to side with him politely. Antony also uses the mode of persuasion Logos, which is the
appeal to convince an audience through logic. During Antony s speech at the beloved

Ice skating can be a difficult sport to learn because there are many steps to learn before you can
even think about going into a competition. To be able to start you will need a pair of professional
ice skates, ice skating nylons, a ice skating dress or clothes suited to practice in like loose
sweatpants and a long sleeves. First, you need to learn the basics of ice skating. You need to be able
to balance on the ice without holding onto the wall, falling, and wobbling side to side. In order
to move on to the next step you have to skate smoothly with ease so you will look professional to
the judges. At the beginning you will most likely fall a lot, especially if you are not used to

You two will keep doing that until you are able to do it on your own without the help of your
instructor. Before you start to make your routine, you will have to choose a song that will match
perfectly with your routine in the making. It may sound hard to pick the perfect song for a
routine that is not even made up yet, but for the first part all you have to do is find a song that
you will be able to skate and dance to. The most important rule you should remember while you
are picking you song is that the song has to be absolutely clean or else the judges will either
deduct points from your score or you will be disqualified it will most likely be the latter. Once
you picked out a song give it to your instructor to listen to and see if they approve of your choice
of music. The second part is that your instructor will either be able to make up a routine to go
along with the music you had chosen or they will tell you to choose a different song. Another
option is that they can choose a song for you to skate to. The reason why the last two options are
there is because your instructor may not like the music you had chosen since before they even
listen to the music you chosen they are already figuring out what will be put in your routine and
how it will be put together. Next, you will begin practicing your routine in parts before you

Collonization Of Australia And Indigenous Australian People
Identify the primary factors which led to the colonisation of Australia and Indigenous Australian
peoples and explain the theories of race which supported this process.
This essay identifies the primary factors which led to the colonisation of Australia and Indigenous
Australian peoples while explaining how race theories were used to justify colonising Australia.
Many factors led to the colonisation of Australia including British Imperialism, but the penal
colony was very important so the British pushed on, whether they had the right to or not. Race
was a theory and using sources, this essay explores different opinions and perspectives of the race
theories. The Indigenous Australian people were on the lower end of the Great Chain of Being and
therefore, were treated as inferior to the Europeans.
British colonialism emerged from rapid political, social and economic change and this affected the
development of technology and a strong sense of national pride and identity which led the way for
the British Empire to be a global power. Due to the Industrial Revolution, the majority of the
population lived in the city which created poor living conditions and overcrowding. With low
economic rates, many people were pushed into theft to feed their families and in turn, the crime
rates rose significantly. Many convicts were sentenced to transportation and were sent, and
sometimes sold, to work as labourers in South American colonies. Due to the American War of

The Positive And Social Changes During The Industrial...
Imagine waking up at 4:30 in the morning and working until 9:00 at night starting at the age of 10
every single day until you die in your 20s from illness. This was the reality for the thousands of
workers during the Industrial Revolution, a time of innovation spanning the 18th and 19th
centuries, which brought significant changes to society. Changes during this time impacted society
in both positive and negative ways. While the Industrial Revolutioncreated conveniences and
comforts for some people in society, the costs outweighed the benefits because people suffered
tremendously under the burden of such rapid technological growth.
Filthy living conditions in industrial cities harmed the inhabitants. Due to the rapid growth of
industrialization, cities experienced a population increase of a few hundred thousand every few
decades as people looked for work. (Document 14) The crowded conditions could not properly
support so many people. In 1829, an English poet named Robert Southey described the British city
of Manchester by saying Imagine this multitude crowded together in narrow streets, the houses all
built of brick and blackened with smoke: frequent buildings among them as large as convents,
without their antiquity, without their beauty, without their holiness. Southey goes on to say how
work surpassed even the importance of the church. [W]hen the bell rings, it is to call the wretches
to work instead of their prayers. (Document 16) Witness accounts of the conditions

Black Plague Dbq
The Renaissance was an important event in human history that caused us to realise how
important being individual is. When the black plague occurred, it made people think that there
may not be a god because of how tragic it was. Many important people such as Leonardo Da
Vinci began making art and literature that were less religious and more in this world. Also the
city states had changes that were necessary for the Renaissance. Without the changes Europe
experienced we would still be under the rule of the church and be forced into a certain religion
instead of being free thinking individuals. Black Death: The Black Plague was a dreadful event
that caused suffering in Europe, however it was also a wake up call for humanity. Many people
believed that the pandemic was because the gods were angry at humanity for... some reason?
After the bodies piled up on the street and pits were made to put them in instead of graves
people wondered if the gods really cared about them. Another thing the black plague caused is a
new class which was the middle class. Serfs and peasants were dying and the demand for them

Two Negative Impacts Of Transnational Corporations On...
Explain TWO negative impacts of transnational corporations on developing countries.
Introduction
The purpose of this report is to explain why the impacts of transnational corporations on
developing countries are important to understand. Transnational corporations are large companies
that have a head office in one country and subsidiary offices in other countries. They affect all
countries; however, they affect developing countries on a much larger and damaging level. This is
because developing countries are poorer, many people have a lower standard of living, and the
resources available and the amount to hire an employee is significantly lower that one of a
developed country. The two negative impacts caused by transnational corporations that will be
discussed in this report are sweatshops and life expectancy. These impacts are important to
understand because they educate us on how the world of trade is influenced by sweatshops, and
how sweatshops effect an individual s life.
Globalisation
The impacts of globalisation are happening around us every day, with or without us realising it.
Globalisation is the breakdown of traditional barriers between nations, and a trend towards faster
and cheaper movement around the world of people, goods, money and information.
As shown in the figure, many different factors are impacted and impact globalisation. Economic
globalisation consists of the growth and development of international trade. This is the process of

M.C. Escher Essay
M.C. Escher occupies a unique spot among the most popular artists of the past century. While his
contemporaries focused on breaking from traditional art and its emphasis on realism and beauty,
Escher found his muse in symmetry and infinity. His attachment to geometric forms made him one
of modernism s most recognizable artists and his work remains as relevant as ever.
Escher s early works are an odd mix of cubism and traditional woodcut. From these beginnings,
one could already note Escher s fondness for repetition and clean shapes. While simple and
exploratory, these works were the signs of a nascent art career.
Beginning in the mid 1930s, Escher s work turned very pointedly to the style we associate with him
today. Some of his most ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Something that recurs references itself. The reflection in a mirror of a mirror is recursive: the
reflected mirror is reflecting its own image and doing so indefinitely. You ve also likely seen the
Droste effect when using camcorders hooked up to a TV or a computer: when the camcorder is
looking at the screen, you can see an infinite series of screens generate themselves, since the
camcorder is recording the same image that it s sending to the screen. The game Portal is a great
example of recursion, when two portals could be opened side by side in a narrow space and looking
in either one produced an infinite series of the same image.
Escher combined recursion and pattern repetition in a unique way. Some of the works featuring
this combination exhibits some complex mathematical and physical ideas, but to the casual viewer
the works are sublime. The swans image above features this sort of combination. Note that the
swans are tiled very precisely, with the same distance from adjacent swans and swans in the next
row. Note also that they are in a closed loop, which is one construct made possible with recursion.
The above image is an example of the Mandelbrot set. The Mandelbrot set, along with other sets, is
an example of a fractal. Fractals are fundamentally based on the idea of infinite recursion. If you
zoom in to a particular spot in the fractal, you ll perhaps see a different arrangement of patterns,

which Afghan groups would receive the aid. No Americans were allowed to enter Pakistan

2002 became the most violent years of the country s post war period. Assassinations, lynchings,
kidnappings, theft, drug trafficking, prison uprisings, among other acts of violence, spread like
wild fire across the nation. The steps taken by Guatemala helped greatly at first but ultimately are

My Experience In Math
I believe everyone is capable of learning math. Everyone has struggled with something in life, and
I always had a struggle with mathematics. When I used to live in Illinois I didn t really struggle a
lot in math till I got into the fourth grade. I was in a class with fourth and fifth graders, we
would always do assignments and take tests and I always made bad grades on it. It always took
me a while to understand things and I wasn t engaged in math so I always got distracted. Also i
thought about other things that were not related to the teachers lessons. I always lacked
confidence in myself because I always failed at doing something when it came to math. I never
believed in myself and I could never see myself exceeding in math in the future. After a while,
my teacher started noticing me struggling on every assignment. They put me in a extra class to
get me help. I didn t want to be in that class because I wanted to be taught in the same class as
my friends, so it made me a little upset at everything. Whenever I went to the class they would
walk me through the math to the point where I got it. Over a period of time I started
understanding Fourth grade math a little bit and I was improving. I wasn t the best but I still
showed improvement. I could still tell I didn t have much confidence in myself because every
time I took a test I always change my answer and was never too sure if I was right or wrong. After
fourth grade I moved to Texas. Everything was so different,

Ward-Perkins The End Of Civilization Analysis
The disintegration of the Roman Empire, in a context comparing the range of the Empire in the
first and second century C.E. to the late fourth century C.E., is an interesting historical event to
tackle. Many historians have written works tackling this event, the most notable of these
historians is Edward Gibbon, and from him, others developed further ideas. Bryan Ward Perkins
is a historian who developed his ideas about the decline of Rome through his predecessors and
supplies compelling evidence to back up his theory that the Germanic invasions led to the fall of
Rome. There are, however, colleagues of Ward Perkins that do not share in his perception of
events. Ward Perkins monograph, entitled The Fall of Rome and The End of Civilization, was
written in 2005. In his work, Ward Perkins provides an introduction to the Roman Empireand
explains how the idea that Rome fell is viable. Through an eclectic style of writing, Ward Perkins
cites evidence that isn t written; rather he cites artifacts containing little to no writing. Through this
use of this evidence Ward Perkins argues that after the Western Roman Empire
disintegrated, the
previous Roman values of knowledge and conspicuous consumerism diminished from all classes to
simply the upper class.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Heather presents the Huns as a primary component and the Germanic tribes as a secondary
component to the collapse of Rome. The primary component of the collapse, Heather argues, are the
Huns because the insecurity they generated in central and eastern Europe forced various barbarian
peoples across the Roman frontier. From this point of view, if it were not for the Huns, the
Germanic people may not have invaded the Roman Empire. Unlike Ward Perkins, Heather
expresses that as the Germanic tribes evaded the Huns, they became stronger and were able to take
control of land within the Roman

My Passion In My Life
At this point in my life, it is my job to figure out what I have a passion for. While doing so, I
frequently reflect on one of the most famous quotes by Alexander Hamilton, Those who stand for
nothing fall for anything. This past spring I gazed out the window admiring the earth as it sat
peacefully below me. This inspiring moment happened on my first flight to San Jose, Costa Rica. I
frequently think back to this trip, as it developed the personality I have today. As we arrived at the
airport in Atlanta I immediately felt agitated from the large crowd and their loud voices. This
perplexing place came straight out of the children s shows The Jetsons, with the high speed trains
and dazzling advertisements. I could not wait to see the tropical paradise that waited for me, with
toucans and monkeys going from treeto tree and all kinds of exotic birds chirping at each other.
Once we arrived, I stepped off the bus to our first hotel. I could not help but feel overwhelmed
with disappointment. The tropical paradise I expected did not exist. Instead, with sidewalks so
heavily damaged you could barely walk on them, power lines so packed and hanging down so low
you could reach up and grab them. And the one thing that bothered me the most, the streets and
yards were littered with trash. I was not unappreciative, I just expected more from a country known
for preservation.
This place is disgusting, my friend Emily stated as we walked through town. On my third day, I
finally felt

Betrayal In Swing Kids, A Film Directed By Thomas Carter
Betrayal is it right or wrong? Is it supporting your country, or turning against your friends? In
Swing Kids, a movie directed by Thomas Carter, betrayal plays a big part of what affects the
main characters and their decisions going forward. This coming of age movie takes place during
the height of Nazi Rule, where three swing kids named Peter, Arvid, and Thomas try to avoid
getting influenced by the Hitler Youth to become part of them, but as the movie continues,
Thomas and Peter end up becoming HJs, and Thomas is fully committed whereas Peter is forced
to be one everyone is trying to find out where they belong. Arvid does end up committing suicide,
and Thomas breaks away from the Swing Kids but Peter is left torn between his two friends that...

A key example is right after Peter becomes and HJ, and he sees Thomas is there as well. Thomas
says, Did you think I was going to let you have all this fun by yourself? You d have done the
same thing. We can t let them split us apart HJ by day, swing kid by night, which proves how
Thomas stays loyal to his friends in the beginning of the movie. However, because of the
behavior and personality that he has, it is hard to stick on one side for too long and he is easily
influenced and persuaded. Another scene in the movie was when Thomas and Emil fight in the
HJ school boxing ring. After Thomas says, Let s see how you do when you re not fighting a
cripple, he tries his hardest to fight for Arvid although Thomas betrayed him. With this in mind,
Thomas stands up for Arvid although he was the one without a real reason to join the HJs like
Peter. This is due to the fact of how Thomas is like a pendulum, always going back and forth
from side to side. Even though Emil does end up beating Thomas, he does get in the last words,
which are, It don t mean a thing if it ain t got no swing. In particular, this quote shows how
Thomas gets back at Emil for being a real traitor, when in fact Thomas is a traitor as well, so he
acts like a hypocrite himself for calling someone else

Compare And Contrast To A Locomotive In Winter
To begin with, To a Locomotive in Winter , written by Walt Whitman and Emily Dickinson s I
like to see it lap the Miles are fairly different poems. In To a Locomotive in Winter , the author
writes about a locomotive and represents it in rather a positive way, using strong and vivid
figurative language. While reading the poem, it is apparent that, in general, the speaker while
talking about a locomotive implies American technological progress and, obviously, supports it.
That is shown through the establishment of a link between science and poetry. Even though I like to
see it lap the Miles written by Emily Dickinsonis also about a locomotive and within the poem,
poetry and science are connected, still, the author s approach differs from Whitman s manner.
Evidently, it is possible to notice some negative implications. Specifically, the speaker may be afraid
of the ongoing technological progress in America and does not support its connotations. During the
1870s, America underwent an impressive technological progress and in To... Show more content on

The author compares it to a horse and other animals but does not directly name the train and by
means of figurative language and poetic devices creates a distinct image for the reader and enables
to experience the feelings of the narrator. Dickinson s manner slightly differ from the manner of
Whitman even though their themes are corresponding. In particular, while Whitman observes a
train with admiration and respect to its strength and force, it is possible to notice that Dickinson
views a locomotive as a ravenously hungry creature. The train perpetually consumes during the
traveling. Furthermore, it does not require human help to feed itself and that becomes obvious in
the third line, And stop to feed itself at tanks (Dickinson). Probably, Dickinson symbolically implies
the technological progress in America which have already begun gather

The Marketing Strategy Of Nike

These areas are very well polished in Nike. The owners know the correct trigger points of every
class of consumer, and thus, the motivating push is given to the exact point. Emotional branding is
used by Nike in several instances and this has been one of the vital areas of its operations. Nike s
position in the market is such that consumers upon hearing the name of Nike are sure that they
shall be getting state of the art products. Though there is no scale of comparison to say that Nike is
better than the competitors, yet the marketing strategy of Nike is such that consumers and buyers

Examining the Existence of Dark Matter in the Universe Essay
Why is the night sky dark? For thousands of years this question has been asked. Astronomers are
continually growing closer to the answer but still no one has yet found an answer that is efficient
enough. While scientists steadily collect data, they are hoping to find some clue as to realize that
the answer may be because of something that is too mind blowing for us to comprehend. There is
perhaps no current problem of greater importance to astrophysics and cosmology than that of dark
matter. The controversy is centered on the conception that there may exist an enormous amount of
matter in the universethat cannot be detected from the light that it emits. The evidence of dark
matter is from the motions of astronomical objects,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Astronomers have figured out that dark matter is present due to the unusual bending of light in
places where nothing but empty space exists as well as the unusual movement of stars and
galaxies that can not be accounted for. The dark matter problem arose because of a difference in
the masses of galaxies and larger cosmic structures. The components of these systems stars and
gas is in the description of galaxies. Gas and galaxies in the case of galaxy clusters move about but
do not escape. They are restricted because they are watched over carefully by the gravitational pull
from the rest of the system. The laws of physics tell us how much mass has to be nearby to
counterbalance the motions. This will result by preventing the dispersal of the system. Doubtfully,
the tally of mass that astronomers actually observe falls relatively short compared to further away.
Dark matter is the only explanation that scientists can come up with for the difference between
these totals.
Albert Einstein of the 1900s was able to calculate up a formula to show that we can more
accurately describe gravity s action at a distance as a warp in the fabric of space time, produced
by any combination of matter and energy (64). With that being said, it opened up many minds in
the world of astronomy which made it more capable for astronomers to gather up a better
understanding of what this blank substance referred to as dark matter is actually

In watching this video, I learned that I as a consumer am often moved by love marks or brands
that go beyond the usual to satisfy a deeper need within myself or my imagination. For instance,
over the past few months I have become increasingly intrigued by Revlon s new global
marketing campaign, Love Is On . I went further to research this brand and their strategy. The
phrase L O V E I S O N is present in the brand name, Revlon, furthermore the brand has remixed a
classic song called Addicted to Love to go along with their commercial. Now repetition and
popular influence has been utilized in this advertisement. Aside from that, Revlon, has used this ad
campaign to associate the brand with a relatable emotion, love . They go beyond the typical
definition of love to describe the progressing stages of innocence, flirting, and passion accompanied
with quick and bright images/motions reenacting these emotions. Revlon accomplishes all this
while displaying their products fluently (lipstick, mascara, etc.) in each love scene within the 1
minute commercial. Revlon has utilized a popular song, repetition, brand associations, unique
emotions, bright images, and tied it into a relatable experience for all women the progression of
love! The link to this video is as follows: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4h1prqrjRlw. In

  • 2. Waltham Motors Division Case Managerial Accounting Case Waltham Motors Division Answer 1: Breakeven point If Waltham Motors Division sells 13,326 units, it will breakeven. But why Waltham incurred net losses when it sold more than 13,326 units in May? The unfavorable cost variances (see answer 2 and 3) and Waltham s high operating leverage were major reasons for its financial problems. Waltham s operating leverage is 3.85 times, which indicates that the operating income is very sensitive to changes in sales. Answer 2: Total cost per unit The budgeted cost per unit is $42.93, and the actual cost per unit is $49.51. When figuring the cost per unit, we include all the cost, including selling and administration costs. The actual cost per unit exceeded the ... To gain further insight, we subdivide the flexible budget variance for direct cost inputs into more detailed variances as following: Price variance * The $4,200 favorable direct materials price variance could be because of skillful negotiation skills of purchasing manager on direct materials, a change to a lower price supplier, a decrease in market price of direct material, and potentially lower quality materials. * The $5,600 unfavorable direct manufacturing labor price variance could be because of an increase in market price of direct labor or, poor negotiation skills of purchasing manager or human resource manager on direct labor costs. Efficiency variance * The $5,600 unfavorable direct materials efficiency variance and the $16,400 unfavorable direct manufacturing labor efficiency variance could be because of unskilled workers, poor production schedule, or poor machine maintenance. We also subdivide the variable costs overhead variance and fixed costs overhead variance into more detailed variances as following: Variable overhead variance * The unfavorable $9,756 variable manufacturing overhead variance arises probably because of the difference ... • 3. Art As An Obscenity Art as obscenity and the argument What defines something as obscene? More over, what does the term obscenity mean? The interpretation of the word has differed in communities; styles and scenes whether it is unacceptable or favorable a great deal of arguable queries have arisen not only in the art community but most of the population. Obscenity is a constitutionally unprotected form of speech (About Us Art Law Library: Obscenity. Avaliable at: http://ncac.org/resource/art law library obscenity) although obscenity may be examined cautiously by few, the issue around the interpretation is deliberated in today s court system regularly. The Hicklin or also known as the Roth test first declared a legal examination in 1868 to be conducted for obscenity, the court held that all material tending to deprave and corrupt those whose minds are open to such immoral influences was obscene, regardless of its artistic history. (Ducat, C.R. (2008) p.540) It was also decided that to be declared obscene one must or ones work must lack serious literary, artistic, political, or scientific value (Waxman, O. (2016) Time) The later decision to retire the Hitchin law reasoning stated by Justice William, J. Brennan JR settled that the opinion of obscenity is utterly without redeeming social importance (West s Encyclopedia of American Law, edition 2. The Gale Group) which in response to that meant it was no longer protected by the First Amendment. 1996 The Supreme Court announced it was adding ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

It was colder than the water found at the rival pumps; it had a pleasant hint of carbonation (p.30). He also discovered that there was not a single death recorded among the workers at Lion Brewery on Broad Street. They were rarely seen to drink water from the pump because of the liquor they received as a part of their wages (Johnson, 2006, p.142). Another important observation Snow has made is about the death of the widow Susanna Eley who used to live in Broad Street, but after a while she moved to Hampstead (Johnson, 2006, p.143). By asking her sons Snow found out that she drank the Broad Street water as she loved it taste and even more, she had it delivered to the new house. Plotz writes: One wonderful, terrible thing about modern capitalism is that companies don t care. You are not a person. You are a wallet (70). When we talk about our privacy, what exactly do we mean? What kind of private information do we want to keep private from the public eye? For different people it is different information. As David Plotz in his essay Privacy is Overrated writes the privacy crusade is built on a foundation of hypocrisy paranoia, economic know nothingism and bogus nostalgia (68). • 16. Multiculturalism in the United States Essay Colleges and universities should emphasize the diverse culture we live in. This position can be validated through the passages written by Mike Rose s Lives on the Boundary and Adrienne Rich s What Does a Woman Need to Know. The following two quotes exemplify Mr. Rose s and Ms. Rich s point of view illustrating this topic. A quote from Mike Roseaffirms We are in the middle of an extraordinary social experiment: the attempt to provide education for all members of a vast pluralistic democracy. Classical literature such as Shakespeare, Homer, and Faulkner, to name a few, have become the customary literature books used in schools. American education, in many cases, has denied our diverse population the use of these great books. Many students struggle with classical literature because it is irrelevant in their lives. Classical literature must be taught with student s diversity in mind. If a person is not from the Dominant Culture, he or she will have little or no interest in the great books described above since these books were written for and by this culture. Motivating the diverse culture of students in today s schools requires sparking their interest. Social historian Elizabeth Ewen wrote it is what we are excited about that educates us. (Rose, 106) Mike Rose became interested in the classics, or great books, through Jack McFarland, a high school teacher. Mr. McFarland influenced Rose through accepting him, developing a relationship with him, and being understanding. • 17. The Ethical Theory Of Ethical Egoism Ethical egoism is defined roughly by stating how people do things or react to what is in their best interest. This theory gets its meaning because the word egoism derives from the Latin term ego , meaning I in English (Moseley). The motivation of ethical egoism depends on how the situation will act upon one s self interest. In this paper, I am going to defend and explain that babies are born with moralityof the ethical egoismtheory. Ethical egoismstands out from the rest of the ethical theories, due to the fact, that it focuses on the individual and how it will benefit them and only them. People who do not go out of their way to help others unless it benefits them are known as, ethical egoists. People following the ethical egoism theory typically are looking out what is better for them. For example, a person invites her friend to go to the store late at night because she is afraid to go alone since crime is high in the area, she is thinking of her own safety first not so much her friends safety. Is being an ethical egoist a bad morality? The answer to the question is simply, no. We in fact are born as an ethical egoist. As babies, we are after our own self interest, not others, because we do not know any better at such a young age. In a way we all have a part of ethical egoism in our morals since we all start out as an ethical egoist when we are born. We are not taught to act in our own self interest it just comes natural. • 22. Social And Cultural Events In The 20th And 21st Century Education has been affected greatly by social and cultural events of the 20th and 21st centuries. Because education follows the moves of society, the need for new skills in life and in the workplace change and students can be career and college ready. This, however, has not always been the case. The first of two main cultural and social events focused on are the events that led up to the Brown vs. the Board of EducationSupreme Court case, which resulted in the desegregation of schools. The second are the effects that the Great Recession had on the education system. In the 1940s the Civil Rights Movement began gaining strength and the country began moving slowly to desegregation. In 1947, in the face of much opposition, Jackie Robinson became the first African Americanbaseball player. When he traveled to the south he was denied access into hotels, restaurants, and other venues because of this race. Because Robinson was in the army the armed forces became desegregated in 1948 and eventually led to the elimination of segregated schools (Schwartz, 2003). During this era African American students were in separate but equal schools although many black schools suffered from poor facilities and a lack of funding and other amenities that were provided at white schools. Black students were often bussed great distances to attend school. In 1952, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) lawyers represented the case Brown vs. the Board of education. This case dealt with the right of a black child to attend an all white school close to her home instead of being bussed across town to the all black school. Initially, the ruling was in favor of the Board of Education, but the adverse effects of separate but equal schooling on the black community were clearly shown (Schwartz, 2003). African Americans were also held back by not having the right to vote. A literacy exam was required to be passed in order to vote. Because of their schooling restrictions, many African Americans were illiterate, which denied them of the right to vote. A workshop for the United Nations drew several community members and teachers from the south (Horton, Freire, 1990). One member who attended ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Pathos is an appeal that twists people emotions. The first example of pathos is during Caeser s funeral, Antony states When that the poor have cried, Caesar hath wept: Ambition should be made of sterner stuff (cite). This quote exemplifies pathos because the term cried symbolizes negative emotion. Hearing this brings out saddened feelings of the people in the audience because their new leader was murdered. In this quote the underlying message Antony is trying to convey is that Caesar is weak because the poor are crying; however, Caesar is weeping. The words Antony uses makes the crowd lean towards Antony because he is playing with their emotions. There are many examples of pathos in Antony s speech, but one he concludes with is Bear with me; My heart is in the coffin there with Caesar, And I must pause till it come back to me (cite). This draws the people towards Antony s side because he is convincing the people that he will always be by Caesar s side and will forever love him, and the people also loved him. This essay identifies the primary factors which led to the colonisation of Australia and Indigenous Australian peoples while explaining how race theories were used to justify colonising Australia. Many factors led to the colonisation of Australia including British Imperialism, but the penal colony was very important so the British pushed on, whether they had the right to or not. Race was a theory and using sources, this essay explores different opinions and perspectives of the race theories. British colonialism emerged from rapid political, social and economic change and this affected the development of technology and a strong sense of national pride and identity which led the way for the British Empire to be a global power. Imagine waking up at 4:30 in the morning and working until 9:00 at night starting at the age of 10 every single day until you die in your 20s from illness. Changes during this time impacted society in both positive and negative ways. While the Industrial Revolutioncreated conveniences and comforts for some people in society, the costs outweighed the benefits because people suffered tremendously under the burden of such rapid technological growth. Introduction The purpose of this report is to explain why the impacts of transnational corporations on developing countries are important to understand. Transnational corporations are large companies that have a head office in one country and subsidiary offices in other countries. They affect all countries; however, they affect developing countries on a much larger and damaging level. This is because developing countries are poorer, many people have a lower standard of living, and the resources available and the amount to hire an employee is significantly lower that one of a developed country. The two negative impacts caused by transnational corporations that will be discussed in this report are sweatshops and life expectancy. These impacts are important to understand because they educate us on how the world of trade is influenced by sweatshops, and how sweatshops effect an individual s life. Globalisation The impacts of globalisation are happening around us every day, with or without us realising it. • 38. American Regime Research Paper The Negative Effects of American Regime Change Operations Since its inception, the United States has tried to expand its global reach. The US has lead many to believe that through its attempts, the world s most powerful country is spreading diplomacy. However, the approach to diplomacy that the US has often taken is one that can be considered sinister if not barbaric. These actions are called regime change operations which is defined as the transition from one political regime to another, especially through concerted political or military action. American regime change operations in Iran, Afghanistan, and Guatemalahave shown that despite the perceived good the US thinks it s doing, these operations create a far greater risk than any possible... In an operation called Operation Cyclone , the CIA sent money and weapons to Afghan freedom fighters called Mujahideen (The Soviet Invasion of Afghanistan and the U.S. Response, 1978 1980). However, all of the money and weapons went to Pakistan who would then decide which Afghan groups would receive the aid. No Americans were allowed to enter Pakistan which was ruled by military dictator Zia al Huq whose main goals were building nuclear weapons and creating an Islamic state. During the 1980s, America gave $6 billion in aid to Pakistan. Between 1981 and 1987, the US gave $1.3 billion to Mujahideen (The Soviet Invasion of Afghanistan and the U.S. Response, 1978 1980), all of which was matched by Saudi Arabia. Similarly to the coup in Iran, the regime change operation of Afghanistan also created negative effects. For example, in 1980 the US placed a grain embargo on Russia which increased tensions between the US and Russia even more. Also, the coup led to the Afghanistan Civil War from 1989 1996. When I used to live in Illinois I didn t really struggle a lot in math till I got into the fourth grade. I was in a class with fourth and fifth graders, we would always do assignments and take tests and I always made bad grades on it. It always took me a while to understand things and I wasn t engaged in math so I always got distracted. Also i thought about other things that were not related to the teachers lessons. I always lacked confidence in myself because I always failed at doing something when it came to math. I never believed in myself and I could never see myself exceeding in math in the future. After a while, my teacher started noticing me struggling on every assignment. They put me in a extra class to get me help. I didn t want to be in that class because I wanted to be taught in the same class as my friends, so it made me a little upset at everything. Whenever I went to the class they would walk me through the math to the point where I got it. Over a period of time I started understanding Fourth grade math a little bit and I was improving. I wasn t the best but I still showed improvement. Ward-Perkins The End Of Civilization Analysis The disintegration of the Roman Empire, in a context comparing the range of the Empire in the first and second century C.E. to the late fourth century C.E., is an interesting historical event to tackle. Many historians have written works tackling this event, the most notable of these historians is Edward Gibbon, and from him, others developed further ideas. Bryan Ward Perkins is a historian who developed his ideas about the decline of Rome through his predecessors and supplies compelling evidence to back up his theory that the Germanic invasions led to the fall of Rome. There are, however, colleagues of Ward Perkins that do not share in his perception of events. Ward Perkins monograph, entitled The Fall of Rome and The End of Civilization, was written in 2005. In his work, Ward Perkins provides an introduction to the Roman Empireand explains how the idea that Rome fell is viable. Through an eclectic style of writing, Ward Perkins cites evidence that isn t written; rather he cites artifacts containing little to no writing. Through this use of this evidence Ward Perkins argues that after the Western Roman Empire disintegrated, the previous Roman values of knowledge and conspicuous consumerism diminished from all classes to simply the upper class.... While doing so, I frequently reflect on one of the most famous quotes by Alexander Hamilton, Those who stand for nothing fall for anything. This past spring I gazed out the window admiring the earth as it sat peacefully below me. This inspiring moment happened on my first flight to San Jose, Costa Rica. I frequently think back to this trip, as it developed the personality I have today. As we arrived at the airport in Atlanta I immediately felt agitated from the large crowd and their loud voices. This perplexing place came straight out of the children s shows The Jetsons, with the high speed trains and dazzling advertisements. I could not wait to see the tropical paradise that waited for me, with toucans and monkeys going from treeto tree and all kinds of exotic birds chirping at each other. Once we arrived, I stepped off the bus to our first hotel. I could not help but feel overwhelmed with disappointment. The tropical paradise I expected did not exist. Instead, with sidewalks so heavily damaged you could barely walk on them, power lines so packed and hanging down so low you could reach up and grab them. And the one thing that bothered me the most, the streets and yards were littered with trash. I was not unappreciative, I just expected more from a country known for preservation. However, because of the behavior and personality that he has, it is hard to stick on one side for too long and he is easily influenced and persuaded. Another scene in the movie was when Thomas and Emil fight in the HJ school boxing ring. After Thomas says, Let s see how you do when you re not fighting a cripple, he tries his hardest to fight for Arvid although Thomas betrayed him. With this in mind, Thomas stands up for Arvid although he was the one without a real reason to join the HJs like Peter. Even though Emil does end up beating Thomas, he does get in the last words, which are, It don t mean a thing if it ain t got no swing. Compare And Contrast To A Locomotive In Winter To begin with, To a Locomotive in Winter , written by Walt Whitman and Emily Dickinson s I like to see it lap the Miles are fairly different poems. In To a Locomotive in Winter , the author writes about a locomotive and represents it in rather a positive way, using strong and vivid figurative language. While reading the poem, it is apparent that, in general, the speaker while talking about a locomotive implies American technological progress and, obviously, supports it. That is shown through the establishment of a link between science and poetry. Even though I like to see it lap the Miles written by Emily Dickinsonis also about a locomotive and within the poem, poetry and science are connected, still, the author s approach differs from Whitman s manner. • 49. Examining the Existence of Dark Matter in the Universe Essay Why is the night sky dark? For thousands of years this question has been asked. Astronomers are continually growing closer to the answer but still no one has yet found an answer that is efficient enough. While scientists steadily collect data, they are hoping to find some clue as to realize that the answer may be because of something that is too mind blowing for us to comprehend. There is perhaps no current problem of greater importance to astrophysics and cosmology than that of dark matter. The controversy is centered on the conception that there may exist an enormous amount of matter in the universethat cannot be detected from the light that it emits. The evidence of dark matter is from the motions of astronomical objects,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Astronomers have figured out that dark matter is present due to the unusual bending of light in places where nothing but empty space exists as well as the unusual movement of stars and galaxies that can not be accounted for. The dark matter problem arose because of a difference in the masses of galaxies and larger cosmic structures. The components of these systems stars and gas is in the description of galaxies. Gas and galaxies in the case of galaxy clusters move about but do not escape. They are restricted because they are watched over carefully by the gravitational pull from the rest of the system. The laws of physics tell us how much mass has to be nearby to counterbalance the motions. This will result by preventing the dispersal of the system. Doubtfully, the tally of mass that astronomers actually observe falls relatively short compared to further away. Dark matter is the only explanation that scientists can come up with for the difference between these totals. Albert Einstein of the 1900s was able to calculate up a formula to show that we can more accurately describe gravity s action at a distance as a warp in the fabric of space time, produced by any combination of matter and energy (64). With that being said, it opened up many minds in the world of astronomy which made it more capable for astronomers to gather up a better understanding of what this blank substance referred to as dark matter is actually ...
