Cooperative Cation Binding Catalysis For Direct Generation...
Abstract In this study, the concept of cooperative cation binding catalysis was elegantly applied for
direct generation of two contiguous tertiary and quaternary stereogenic centers. Using a highly
accessible chiral oligoethylene glycol (oligoEG) as a cation binding catalyst, asymmetric Mannich
reaction of α thiocyanato cyclic ketones as Mannich donors was performed with α amido sulfones as
the bench stable imine precursors in the presence of potassium fluoride as the base, affording α
thiocyanato β amines possessing tetra substituted C SCN centers. The salient features of this process
include (a) a transition metal free and operationally simple procedure, (b) direct use of α amido
sulfones as bench stable precursors of sensitive imines, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In particular, chiral compounds with β amino α thiocyanate moieties are rarely explored in the
medicinal chemistry area because of their synthetic difficulty,[5] although they are versatile precursors
for the synthesis of β aminothiols,[6] β aminosulphonic acids,[7] and 2 iminothiazolidines,[8] present
in some stereoselective catalysts, and many biologically and pharmacologically active compounds. To
the best of our knowledge, only three related publications have been reported to date.[9,10] In 2013
Sala et al.[10a], and Babu and Parquette[10b] independently reported the asymmetric synthesis of β
amino α thiocyanate compounds via the desymmetrization of meso aziridines with TMSNCS using
combined Ca(II)/Mg(II) VAPOL phosphate salts and chiral dimeric yttrium salen complexes as
catalysts. Quite recently, Nakamura et al. also reported the same transformation using chiral

Analysis Of Longitude By Dava Sobel
Longitude by Dava Sobel was a book that explained in great detail the struggle to find longitude at sea
and way it was so necessary. Sobel talked about the tragedies that followed with not finding longitude
at sea and then the discoveries and trials that had occurred to find a final solution. Throughout the
book, you understand the urgent need to find longitude why it was so hard, and what it really took in
order to come to the final discovery. As you read through this paper you will get an understanding of
the topics Sobel talked about in her book such as, the shipwrecks and tragedies that occurred without
longitude at sea, the two competing methods to find longitude and the man who discovered it. The

There were many cases like these that inevitably made the problem of not knowing how to find
longitude into an all out panic to solve it. Shipwreck after shipwreck, it became hard to ignore the
issue at hand, so Parliament took action. In 1714, after countless merchants and seamen demanded
help to find a solution Queen Anne put into action the Longitude Act, which was accompanied by
three sets of money prizes. The first prize was in the amount of £20,000 and you had to come close to
at least a half of a degree of a great circle. The second prize was in the amount of £15,000 and you had
to be in two thirds of a degree, and finally, the third prize was £10,000 and that had to be within one
degree. Along with the Longitude Act in order to figure out if methods that were proposed and
explained were accurate, they created a Board of Longitude. The Board of Longitude was made up of
many people like scientists, naval officers, and government officials but there were also ex officio
members on the board as well. The board was given the ability to give out funds and grants to help
competitors further their discoveries and help better them in order to discover a method of finding
longitude. They also were able to find the accuracy of the discoveries that they were presented by
sending them on trial runs and testing them on ships as they went on voyages but only from Great
Britain to any of the

The Importance Of Internet Privacy
The purpose why internet privacy be invented is because the scientists hoped that the hardware,
software and data in its network system can be protected from accidental and malicious damage,
alteration, disclosure. Also wanted its system can be continuous and reliable Running, network service
is not interrupted, etc. But as for today, there are still lots of aspects like viruses and rogue software
are unchecked. The causes of virus and rogue software s rampant are both human factors and systemic
vulnerabilities.
In today s Internet world, Internet security seems to be considered an outdated idea. Instead of making
security a priority, technology companies see it as an added way, not as a security measure. This can
be referred to now there are many unsound places in the construction of Internet security. But at the
same time, some technology companies and the government set special legal restrictions on them, but
also can reflect its sound aspects.
Obviously, legislation is the most effective and direct way to limit cybercrime and improve cyber
security. In the original, there was no law that would prevent cybercrime from taking place. The
company collected data about people s internet access, assembled it into detailed profiles, and sold it
to advertisers or others without a request for permission. So it is best to see the support that appears on
the web and the minimum privacy standards that are turned off. The article states that the Obama
administration has called

Romanticism In The Open Boat
The beginning of American literature was only in the late seventeenth century during the Puritanism
Era. Even then works primarily focused on religious studies and had not developed continuous themes
of their own. As the country began to grow older through the colonial and revolutionary periods,
American literature grew into what it was by the nineteenth century. Within the Antebellum period,
writers had taken on romanticism, transcendentalism, and realism, creating writings with defined
purposes and overarching themes which could be used to develop claims and commentary on the state
of the nation. The Antebellum period was one full of uncertainties, tensions, political unrest, and the
imminent threat of division. The foundations of America provided basic themes that permeate
literature through the American Civil War freedom, sacrifice, and death.

Harry tries to locate the diadem and Ron and Hermione who had gone missing. Thinking that the
diadem had not been seen in living memory, he speaks with the Grey Lady and surmises that Tom

seeing the diadem in the Room of Requirement and meets up with Ron and Hermione, who had
disappeared in order to retrieve Basilisk fangs from the Chamber of Secrets to destroy the next two
Horcruxes. They re enter the Room of Requirement, and Ron remembers all about the house elves in
the kitchens. He does not feel that it is right to order them to die. With a clatter, Hermione drops all the
basilisk fangs she is holding, and she and Ron share a deep, meaningful kiss, completely forgetting
that Harry is there and that there is a war going on. After being reminded, they search the Room of
Hidden Things, a version of the Room of Requirement that students have used to hide things like

Greek Mythology And Its Impact On Modern Society
Greek mythology has been passed down over many generations and has led to many great tales of
heroes and gods. One of these heroes was Odysseus. Although Odysseus is best known as a warrior in
the Trojan War, he is also known for leaving an impact on modern society and committing acts of
heroism.
Odysseus lived an exciting life full of adventure and hardship. Odysseus was the son of King Laertes
and Anticlea. While being educated by the centaur Chiron Odysseus showed many characteristics of
greatness including great strength and courage (Odysseus). One time he showed this was during a
hunting trip with his father and uncle during which he killed a wild boar thus saving the adults he was
with. When Odysseus was of age he was passed down the rule of Ithica, also around this time he
began to think of marriage. Like many other men of Greek mythology he desired the hand of Helen,
the beautiful daughter of King Tyndareus of Sparta (Odysseus). Even though this was unlikely to
happen due to the poorness of Ithica, Odysseus tried none the less. When Odysseus went to Sparta as a
suitor he displayed his cunning personality, for this he quickly became famous. The King took notice
of this and and accepted advice from him concerning how he can be sure of Helen s safety. Odysseus
advised Tyndareus to make all the suitors swear an oath to protect Helen and the man she married
(Odysseus). They all agreed and a man named Menelaus became the husband of Helen. To show
gratitude King

The Bad Seed And We Have Always Lived In The Castle Analysis
Relationships in The Bad Seed and We Have Always Lived in the Castle
In the two novels, Children play the role of killing and sense no guilt concerning the breathes they
have taken. In The Bad Seed, Christine preferred murdering herself but not her daughter, Rhoda, and
declined to inform anybody of her murderous acts, with the outcome that Rhoda might now continue
killing any person who gets involved with her and anything she needs. On the other hand, in We Have
Always Lived in the Castle ends with Merricat and Constance once more living a secretive and
isolated existence in what is presently left of a Blackwood house. The child who has devoted many
murders has a family associate who roles as her protector. The two novels We Have Always Lived in
the Castle and The Bad Seed depicts how a family member save and protect the young murderous;
thus it is crucial to explore and understand the relationship between Rhoda and Christine, as well as
that of Constance and Merricat.
In The Bad Seed, Rhoda and Christine Penmark are two major characters with a family relationship in
the play. According to Willam, the author, Rhoda had attained maturity at a quicker rate than other
kids (35). She was capable of manipulating Christine and making convincing explanations and
arguments for her activities. Conversely, Rhoda was as well had feedbacks for everything and very
cunning. Christine was a young feminine under her thirties. She was highly devoted to her household

Illegal Trafficking Is A Source, Transit, And Destination...
According to the United Nations Office of Drugs and Crime, Bangladesh is a source, transit, and
destination for human trafficking involving women, men, and children (1). Bangladeshi men and
women are lured into work under false pretenses within their own country or into neighboring
countries (2). A large proportion of cross border trafficking in Bangladesh is due to migration in
search of employment. Most are subjected to forced labor or forced prostitution (3).
Thousands of unreported children are trafficked from Bangladesh to other countries every year (2).
Children who are taken by traffickers often come from impoverished or isolated regions. The parents
are promised that their children will have a well paid job or a nice marriage (4). Impoverished and
desperate, they trust the offers, which ultimately lead their children to be exploited through trafficking
(7).
3) If this is a destination country and/or if there is internal human trafficking, which forms of
trafficking are common in this country? (If you think that there are no forms of trafficking happening
within this country, provide citations about that and some reasons why it is not happening. The reasons
don t have to be proven, but they must be plausible.)
Within the country, trafficked people are subjected to sex trafficking, domestic servitude, or forced
and bonded labor (7).
Girls are commonly trafficked into sexual exploitation or bonded servitude. The sexual exploitation of
boys is a fast growing issue in

Pros Of Eugenics
As a trained nurse in the slums and tenements of New York I had been brought face to face with
conditions that made the so called sacredness of motherhood a term of unspeakable irony. Pregnant
women drunken husbands hungry children, children born to a heritage of disease, filth, crime this was
the order of that day. As one pregnancy followed another, a family sank deeper into the mire. And
always denied contraceptive knowledge by their doctors, these women were driven to other means. On
Saturday evenings, they lined up before the office of a cheap abortionist, each waiting her turn. You
would tell us nothing, they seemed to reproach me (I knew nothing to tell them), and here we are. All
too often wrecked health and death followed. Weighed ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Birth control was seen as preventing events such as abortion and the cycle of poverty if used
responsibility. It gave power back to women. Conversely, the eugenics movement is tainted with the
distrust of women. A distrust that women would be unable to be responsible over their bodies and the
need for strict control over women through legislation such as forced sterilization. While eugenicists
may have supported birth control, they did not view it as an effective enough practice to prevent the
birth of unfit children into American society. Eugenics wanted a long term solution to the problem of
unfit children, not a short term

Pandas might be one of the most dangerously endangered animals in the world right now, but the good
news is that there are plenty of them to be found in new game Big Panda videi slot. The developers of
the game Amatic like always have stayed true to the Chinese origins of pandas by setting the 5 reels
and 50 paylines against bamboo, known for being the favourite food of these delightful creatures.
Right in the middle of the bamboo is a 20 window grid packed with stacked symbols offering multiple

What becomes immediately clear is that Big Panda looks the part, but can this Amatic title match this
with exciting gameplay? The following review reveals all!

encrusting the top of the screen. The background of the game is a made of solid colours, which just
looks great on the eyes. Finally, the symbols on offer include the big pandas themselves, Chinese

Legal Advice Regarding Discharge Of Contracts
This assignment will involve giving legal advice regarding discharge of contracts, a term which
indicates a contract has terminated. A contract can end in many ways yet only two will be covered in
this scenario namely performance and breach. Discharge by performance occurs when the parties have
performed all their obligations. The latter may occur when a party fails to perform obligations or fails
to achieve the terms and conditions set out in the contract. Breach can be of two types actual, where
the party has not performed and anticipatory where one party states that performance will not take
place. A breach of contract can also occur due to substantial performance and part performance. The
former taking place when the conditions ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In order for the breaching party in this case LCL to be liable, it is vital to distinguish whether the
condition is a mere representation or a term. This will depict whether the party is liable. If it s a mere
representation this will generate a claim for misrepresentation rather than a breach of contract. In
Birch v Paramount Estates it was specified that the greater the significance attached, the more likely it
is a term.
The construction work portrays an expressed term of the contract as it was incorporated in the
contract. This constitutes a breach of contract as LCL have failed to accomplish the term outlined in
the contract. Due to this, Mr Jones is entitled to recover damages as he has to arrange another
company to complete the building work. The compensation Mr Jones is entitled to is namely quantum
meruit as some of the terms incorporated in the contract were accomplished. The purpose of this is
that it will put Mr Jones in a position which he would have been in, if the contract had been
performed. This is known as expectation interest . .
As the breach is repudiatory meaning that a term has not been fulfilled, then the non breaching party
in this case Mr Jones can either terminate or affirm the contract. By affirming the contract they will
accept the performance of LCL. In Sumpter v Hedges the builders failed to perform all the obligations
set out in the contract known as part

History, Principles And Value Of Infant Observation
Introduction To quote child analyst Esther Bick, one may have to sit with children for a long time
completely in the dark about what is going on, until something suddenly comes up from the depth that
illuminates it. (Bick 1962, p.632). Infant observation is a powerful tool when working with children
that helps clarify what it is that comes up from the depth . This paper will briefly outline the history,
principles and value in infant observation. I will then further examine my own experience of infant
observation of four year old S. My observations of S had recurring themes of perfectionism, obsessive
compulsive behaviours and avoidance. S was extremely shy and constantly sought teacher approval.
By examining attachment theory, the emotions of shame and guilt, containment, the drive to know,
mental pain and false self, I was able to psychoanalysis S s unconscious thoughts and feelings which
were conveyed in her behaviour.
History of Psychotherapy and Infant Observation Sigmund Freud is known as the founder of
psychotherapy. Freud was interested in the emotional relationship between the past and the present,
and the feelings it generated. Subsequently Abraham (1924), Klein (1928), Fairbairn (1952) among
others, further developed Freud s work of the emotional life. They examined the earliest relationships
of infancy and the processes these set up within the developing mind. Winnicott (1949), Bick (1968)

The Key Features Of Stuttering
Key Features of Stuttering
Stuttering is a speech disorder that occurs when the fluency of speech is involuntarily interrupted
(Belyk et al., 2014). According to scientific literature, typical symptoms of stuttering include
prolongations of speech sounds, sound and syllable repetition, fast tempo, lengthy pauses, intrusion of
irrelevant sounds, the use of interjections, and physical signs of struggle (Andrade et al., 2014).
Additionally, stutterers can develop secondary behaviours including negative perceptions leading to
avoidance of certain social situations (Maguire et al., 2004). Negative emotional responses can cause
debilitating cognitive and social impacts (Andrade et al., 2014). Stuttering typically develops in
childhood and the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Additionally, Watson is male and his mild condition presented itself in childhood. Despite the trend for
spontaneous recovery, Watson has yet to experience partial or complete recovery. Overall, many of the
typical symptoms of stuttering are present in Watson s case.
Aetiology
Despite the intensive efforts in the scientific community, the aetiology of stuttering remains largely
unknown. Suspected factors of influence include dopamine hyperactivity, disordered sensory
feedback, linguistic deficits, anticipation of speech difficulties, generalized motor deficits, speech
specific motor deficits, environmental factors, and genetic factors (Max et al., 2004). Currently, it is
widely agreed upon that genetic factors have a substantial role in the aetiology of stuttering. Studies in
twins have shown an increased rate of stuttering in monozygotic twins than in dizygotic twins 77%
prevalence versus 32% prevalence (Felsenfeld et al., 2000). In addition to genetic factors,
environmental factors include birth events, traumas or illnesses, stress, and peer influences (Felsenfeld
et al., 2000).
On the contrary, Michaela believes that both genetics and environment play a rather minimal role in
stuttering. Scientific literature suspects that genetics have a profound influence on stuttering.
However, a family history for Watson was conducted, and revealed a lineage absent of stuttering.
Watson has not displayed any symptoms of

John Brown Research Paper
Hello Everyone,
John Brown was a revolutionary abolitionist who felt very strongly about ending slavery. He was born
in 1800 and died in 1859. His birthplace was Torrington, Connecticut. He belonged to a very loving
family with very strong anti slavery beliefs. He tied the knot twice and brought forth 20 children from
those unions.
Brown had several business endeavors that failed. In 1842 he filed bankruptcy. He began working as a
conductor with the Underground Railroad in order to support the abolitionist cause. He also started the
League of Gileadites, which was organized to aid runaway slaves fleeing to Canada. He later moved to
a free black farming community in New York.
In 1856, at the age of 55, Brown and his sons moved to Kansas Territory, John Brown accompanied by
a small army of his four sons and two other men set out along the Pottawatomie Creek and brutally
murdered five men and boys whom they believed were promoting slavery. Later on Brown raided

The Emigration Of The United States
While the United States were determined to expand across the North American continent by
exercising Manifest Destiny, there were a huge number of immigrants arriving into the nation. The
sudden increase of immigrants entering the country led to disputes over who was American and who
was a foreigner. Native born Americans, specifically the nativist group strongly opposed the massive
influx of immigrants coming from all different countries because the nativists were anti foreign and
anti Catholic. These people were trying to form a distinction and limitation on who was an American
citizen with rights. In the 1850s, the Know Nothing Party emerged as a reaction to the migration of
European immigrants. The Know Nothing Party was a secret organization amongst members but
slowly became known to the public as another political party. This political party resolved to limit
foreigners and Catholics from participating in politics or holding any form of power in society. Thus,
the Irish immigrants were mainly targeted because of their religion. Discrimination of the Irish based
on religion demonstrates that British prejudices about the Irish and Catholics carried over into the
New Republic.
In the United States, like most immigrants, the Irish were doing all the low pay, manual, and
unprofessional jobs. The nativists were worried that the Irish immigrants were tarnishing the image of
urbanized country America was establishing at the time. The social status of the Irish was

Multiple Sclerosis is considered an autoimmune disease in which the body s immune system attacks
its own tissues. [1] In the case of MS, this immune system malfunction destroys myelin (the fatty

Bizzozero Staining Procedure
An experiment Evaluating whether PCNA supports the classification of Bizzozero (1894) tissues
tissues placed in three categories, reflecting their replicative potential.
Introduction
The aim of this experiment was to utilise PCNA and staining procedures to determine whether
different tissue cell samples proliferate. Tissue which exhibited brown stains prove cell proliferation
and mitotic divisions, this would suggest it being the in the first group of Bizzozero s grouping of
tissue types. Tissue samples which showed no brown staining meant no cells had proliferated and
therefore were of a different tissue type that do not regenerate while present in the body. The PCNA
protein is present during cell division/mitosis therefore, its presence suggests that cell proliferation is
occurring or has occurred. An area can be stained using brown diaminobenzidine (DAB) by using an
antibody that is against the PCNA protein. A primary antibody then attaches to the PCNA molecule,
and a secondary antibody (horse radish peroxidase) attaches to the primary antibody. A ... Show more

Tissue sample B showing no brown staining visible:
Tissue sample C showing minimal brown staining:
Conclusion
The three different tissue types exhibit differing levels of cell replication. Proliferation did not take
place in tissue sample A compared to Tissue sample b having very minimal cell proliferation. The
experiment conducted supports Bizzozero s 1894 article which illustrates that based on where the cells
originate from, the cell proliferation will differ.

Glorification Of Violence Analysis
The glorification of violence is present in both epics and has value to their respective societies. Using
his lance first, the Cid got his hand on the sword, he killed so many Moors you could not have counted
them, the blood was streaming from the arm above his elbow. The violence of their battles showed the
value in their society of how fighting for your Lordan honorable act was and that it is expected that
violence will occur. The bishop, don Jerónimo, the mitered man of merit, when he had finished his
hand to hand combats, he could not count the number of Moors he d killed. The glorification of
violence is a value of the Cid society that even a clergyman had been involved in the gruesome part of

The Cid had wanted to protect his daughters, however, his conflicting value of loyalty caused a
problem with his other value of the first submission. Whatever is left, give to my wife and daughters;
ask that they pray for me by day and by night, and if I live, I ll give them enough yet to see them
wealthy. The Cid would give his daughters riches so they could live comfortably without having to
worry about anything. The second submission is the relationship between a husband and his wife.
Seeing him approach, doña Jimena threw herself at his feet: Grace, O Campeador! Bless the hour you
girded on sword! You ve saved me many a sore trial, my Lordand now you see me here with both your
daughters. The value of a wife respecting their husband is never more prevalent than this when the
wife literally falls at the feet of her husband. This shows the role women play during medieval
Spanish. The third and final submission is the widow to male relative submission. In the case of the
Cid, he is leaving to go to war and he wants someone to watch over them when he s away. I leave you

Radiation Exposure for Astronauts
My science fiction article is taking the success of Apollo 11 , the first time of human landing on the
moon, as the background. That year, 1969, is also during the Cold War between the governments of
the Soviet Union and the United States. And this victory, neither convinced Soviet Aeroflot of their
lagging behind in the space race, nor explained well the flaws of collected pictures the NASA
presented during the mission. Hence, Leonid Brezhnev, the General Secretary of the Central
Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, hurriedly and secretly sent their first made
manned spacecraft, Search 1 , with three astronauts to the moon for investigation in September of the
same year. Even though Soviet s astronauts are shielded from various forms of ionizing radiation, they
unfortunately did not pass through the Van Allen Radiation Belts due to an overtime stay in that area
caused by a large solar flare ever. The strong space radiation fried up all the astronauts and they did
not manage to return. For a solid and sound interpretation of scientific aspects in the sci fi article, this
research paper, related to the topic of radiation exposure for astronauts, is generated to introduce the
nature, source, forms, and harms of space radiation, and reveal the real plight astronauts would
encounter during space travel. It is as well aiming to present

Bethan Gray Essay
Bethan Gray is an award winning Welsh designer that has an unusual but impressive family origin.
Her ancestors originate from an ancient Rajasthani clan that spent many hundreds of years journeying
across Arabia and Persia before choosing to remain in the Celtic region of Wales. This very heritage
wove its way into being some of Bethan Grays s main influences and inspirations, which pull ideas

Essay on Sir Gawain and the Green Knight as Modern Fantasy
Sir Gawain and the Green Knight as Modern Fantasy
Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, written by an unknown author in the 14th century, can be called a
timeless work of poetry. It exudes a certain fantastic quality that, despite its age of over 500 years, still
appeals to modern audiences. Because of this application to all eras, would it be reasonable to state
that this poem could be classified with modern fantasy fiction? Because of the similarities in plot and
style with so much modern fantasy, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight could be placed in the same
category with that genre, though the uses of doing so are questionable.

From when the Green Knight is beheaded and proceeds to pick up his head, give a wicked grin, and
say essentially, I ll see you in a year, (ll. 423 456) it is clear that magic will play in integral part in the
narrative. The confirmation of enchantment by Morgan le Faye (ll. 2446 2462) finishes the plot as it
began it: in a state of magical unreality. Such enchantment is typical of modern fantasy, particularly
from writers of modern fairy tales. Indeed, Ellen Datlow and Terri Windling have essentially made
their careers editing compilations of these tales, such as the popular Snow White, Blood Red and its
several follow ups. To increase the fairy tale style feel of the story, the Green Knight is called an elf
(ll. 680, 2461) and faery. (l. 240) There is clear indication that this can easily be called a fairy tale.
Stylistically, the visual and concrete nature of the poem lends itself to modern comparison as well. The
delightful accounts of the changing of the seasons are in part to indicate the passage of time, but also
add mood to the whole of the piece. Present day fantasy writer Patricia McKillip has been critically
lauded for lush imagery and stories described as atmospheric... and filled with rich imagery. Clearly
the descriptions are an important part of the style that makes modern

Pros Of Drinking And Driving Research Paper
Driving in other countries is fun and exciting, but it also comes with a completely different set of rules
and conditions. If people don t understand the country they are visiting, it can be deadly. So, these 7
tips have been put together to ensure that we keep everyone safe this summer. #1 Don t drink and
drive We know you re here to have a good time, but don t let having a good time stand in the way of
doing the right thing. Before you get behind the wheel of the car or any vehicle, ensure you are sober
enough to do so. If not, put the keys down! #2 Road Trips Road trips allow tourists to see more of the
vast landscape that Australia has to offer, but it s not a short distance from one place to another. Be
sure to check petrol regularly ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
To avoid head on collisions and other potential accidents, ensure you follow the direction of the other
cars. #4 City driving Inner city Melbourne is quite daunting, especially if you re not used to driving in
such a confined space with so many surrounding cars, people, bikes and public transport. In this case,
it s probably best avoided and easier to travel on foot, or by public transport. #5 Wildlife Animals can
jump out at you from nowhere when driving in rural Australia. Kangaroos have been known to cause
accidents on our roads, so be sure to take it slow, to keep yourself and the animals safe. Not only this,
but any damage to a rental car will cost you a lot of money, especially if you haven t taken out travel
insurance for your stay in our country. #6 There will be Bugs Summer is the time of year when all the
bugs come out, and with this comes a very dirty car. As you drive they splatter on the window, leaving
quite the mess and at times obscuring vision. It is in your best interest to ensure that your windscreen
wipers are in great working order, as well as making sure there is enough windshield washer fluid.
Trust me, you re going to need it. #7

Essay on Moral Luck
The case of moral luck was introduced by Williams Bernard and developed by Thomas Nagel in their
articles respectively. Both raised the question whether luck can influence the judgment of morality. In
this essay, the definition of moral luck and four kinds of moral luck by Williams and Nagel will be
discussed through several case examples, and then followed with some arguments from Judith Andre,
Donna Dickenson and David Enoch and Andrei Marmor who disagree with the concept of moral luck.
Let take a simple example from Nagel s paper to acquire a brief understanding on the idea of moral
luck. Driver A and B were both drunk when driving home. Drive A passed the red light and killed a
child who was passing the street while driver B got home ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The second type of luck, circumstantial, was described as luck in one s circumstances the kind of
problems and situations one faces , (Nagel, p.28). The drunken drivers example belongs to the third
type of luck: resultant luck. To many philosophers, the third and fourth type of luck is accountable for
one which deals with the causes and effects of action, as Nagel explains, luck in how one is
determined by antecedent circumstances, and luck in the way one s action and projects turn out. ,
(Nagel, p.28). The commonality of these four categories of luck is the idea that one cannot be more
culpable or estimable for anything than one is for that fraction of it which is under one s control. It
seems irrational to take or dispense credit or blame for matters over which a person has no control, or
for their influence on results over which he has partial control. (Nagel, p.28).
Williams also delivers the idea of agent regret which, to him, matters to the person in the unlucky case
more than any extrinsic moral judgments. Agent regret is defined as thought being formed in part by
first personal conceptions of how one might have acted otherwise , (Williams, p.27), and required a
first personal subject matter and not yet merely a particular kind of psychological content, but also a
particular kind of expression , (Williams, 27). Hence, even if the driver A is morally treated as equal as
driver B, the agent regret of guilt may follow him to the

Review of Aristotle s Nichomachean Ethics
Aristole s Nichomachean Ethics is a critically acclaimed piece of literature that has laid the framework
for philosophy as we know it today. It is considered to be a historical piece that was the first to address
ethics in a unified, clear, and concise manner. The book was translated by F. H. Peters with an
introduction by Hye Kyung Kim. Aristotle was one of the great early philosophers who ventured to
speak to humans about how they conducted themselves as they related to others; however, some of
Aristotle s ideologies were debated by his counterparts for hundreds of years. Aristotle s plethora of

The need to explain the sensory pleasure or to question it as it relates to happiness points to some of
the teachings of Plato. Plato was not a believer in empiricism, and one of his main works, The
Allegory of the Cave, demonstrates how he believed that ones perception is their reality. In this
writing, Plato uses prisoners to represent the human race; the cave to represent the world as
experienced through our senses; This raises the age old question of how goodness and happiness
merge and direct human activity. Plato s rationalist ideas conflicted with some of Aristotle s
ideologies, but Plato s influence was the impetus for Aristotle s philosophy. Aristotle s assertions about
ethics quickly became the foundation that molded other philosophers that emerged throughout the
centuries. They have also played out in the media, on the silver screen, and in publications. When
evaluating the movie, All The President s Men, we are able to see how the struggle with media ethics
parallels Aristotelian ideologies as expressed in Nichomachean Ethics. The movie is a conglomeration
of ethics, morals, emotions, vices and virtues. All The President s Men presents the classic
circumstances for the proper implementation of prudent ethical behavior. The main characters are
journalists at the Washington Post who have the daunting task of investigating a break in that

In the 21st century, significant researchers, organizations and policy makers are advocating the
abolishing of sexual slavery to be a prime goal on the global agenda (Bernat Winkeller, 2010;
Griffiths, 2010). Much literature suggests that there is exponential growth in sex slavery (Hocking
Muthu, 2012; Kotnik, et al., 2007; Smith, 2011; Teshome, 2011), however some authors such as Bales
and Griffiths (2010) point out the rising feminist view has contributed to only exposing an ever

However, such explanations tend to overlook the fact that current sanctions make these statements of
little use. Unfortunately, the legal definition and parameters of sex slavery in Australia that does not
capture what many researchers declare as modern day slavery (Hoyle, Bosworth, Dempsey, 2011).
Despite the evidence of these findings, the Australian Criminal Code states that sexual slavery needs
to consist of the evidence of utter control over a women s physical body resulting in capitulation, in
which subtle signs are not considered sufficient evidence (Hocking Muthu, 2012). In other words,
current legislation refuses to recognize sex workers in debt bondage to be considered sexual slaves.
However, abolitionists and anti prostitution advocates argue that prostitution is the pull factor by the
destination country that leads to sex trafficking and inevitably sex slavery and exploitation (Hoyle, et
al., 2011; O Brien, 2011). Supporting this argument is Carson s (2011) analysis on policies showing
that the influence of neoliberalism in Australia such as the emphasis on sexual liberalism, consumer
choice on lifestyle and non government intervention, has a direct correlation to sexual exploitation
(Carson, 2011). Carson (2011) suggests that Australian legislative framework seeks to accommodate

Body Paragraphs:
II: Basic Information on the Issue
A: According to Encyclopedia Britannica, race is determined by physical and personality traits,
intellect, morality, and culture ( Racism ). Racial discrimination is discriminating someone based on
their race or religion ( Racism/Color Discrimination ) or prejudice against an individual or group of
people of a different race because of the belief that one s own race is superior ( Racism ).
B: Problems associated with racism range from social problems to financial problems. Social
problems include alcohol or drug use/abuse and emotional withdrawal. Some emotional problems
include depression, feeling isolated, feelings of guilt and blaming oneself. Body aches, headaches, and
stress problems are some physical problems ( Impacts and Consequences ). Racial discrimination can
also cause people to quit jobs or school, lose concentration, and have a negative impact on grades and
important records. Finally, people can also suffer financially, such as decreases in academic/job
opportunities, loss of jobs, incomes, and/or benefits ( Impacts and Consequences ). III: Impact of the

The Importance Of Poverty In Schools
Minorities could be scoring almost 15 points lower then non minority cohorts for multiple reasons,
which includes the following.
Poverty could be considered one of the obvious reasons for this gap in IQ scores for example, schools
in poverty stricken areas could receive less funding and opportunities for more money then schools in
areas that aren t affected by poverty. Less funding means less everything pretty much that a school
needs (books, computers that chance of having good staff to teach these kids). Without being given
some of these tools that schools need to succeed, could greatly affect the kids in it and obviously will
affect their intelligence level at some stage. I have some friends that are teachers, in the Bronx as well
as areas in Westchester like White Plains, etc. They could tell you first hand there are clear differences
in every aspect of a school in the south Bronx in comparison to a White Plains school district.
To be culturally biased is the phenomenon of interpreting and judging phenomena by standards
inherent to one s own culture. In regards to this specific testing, one would assume that just because
one is a minority and could possibly live in a poverty stricken neighborhood that they might
automatically already be considered to have a low IQ, which is not always the case.
After looking through the WISC IV, there are most certainly aspects of it that could be culturally
biased. For example, the Vocab section can be easily seen as a grey

Our Constitution: Does it need to be reformed? In 1780 one person proposed an idea to reconstruct our

there was no whole as a nation only sovereignty for the states. In 1787 the Framers changed the future

Many things to be amended to change, add on, or reword. One thing that has a huge aspect in our

amount of power Congress possesses compared to states; the power produces lack of trust and hate

Argumentative Essay On Antiheron
A hero is someone who always is brave and fearless in the face of danger. He is not flawed and is
admired for his heroic deeds by everyone while an antihero is one who lacks the conventional
attributes of a hero. When we look at the definition of heroes, most people cannot relate to it. We
make mistakes sometimes whereas traditional heroes do not make mistakes, and they are perfect. We
compromise on certain issues even if it will not benefit everyone; traditional hero do not compromise,
yet they want to make everyone happy by making the right decision while defeating evil vices. Most
people cannot relate to traditional heroes because at some point in their lives, they have made mistakes
and compromised on certain situations. The popularity of antiheroes benefits the society because
everyone feels included in heroic acts in different ways.

To be or not to be well educated: A Narrative Response to Alfie Kohn s What does it mean to be well

Alfie Kohn s essay What does it mean to be well educated? begins on a personal note using his wife as

indeed a refreshing way to initiate thought into a subject not often considered. Today not everyone

Nevertheless, something is imbibed. Education in a good school does seem to show in the kind of
person you become and whether anything is remembered or not the molding influence is indelible.
Secondly good education when put to use is much handier when compared to a lower grade of
education. Kohn s question of consensus set me rapidly agreeing with him. Levels of education do
vary between countries, states, and even the past and present. What is well educated in one country
may not be up to standard in another (2003, par. 9). Today a person with a doctorate in India is well
respected and highly valued in his/her country but when the same person wishes to teach in America
or Britain he/she must acquire a teaching certification as most of the time local credentials are not
accepted.
The next stage of Kohn s reasoning involved ruling out what might not be considered as being well
educated. Being well educated does not depend on the number of hours spent in class, how well
prepared for a career one is, test scores, or rote learning (2003, pars. 12 15). Although intelligent
students do get good test scores this does not happen all of the time as there are several smart students
who do not seem to perform well. Also, and in this as in the previous point I completely agree with
Kohn, memorizing everything that is just a click away on the internet does not necessarily translate
into being considered well educated.

Environmental Scan
The concept of environmental scanning is important because of the short term and long term success
of a company. This tool helps companies scan, monitor, evaluate, and forecast the internal and external
parts of the company. In order to obtain an accurate assessment of the internal and external variables
of a company, the business managers would have to use a SWOT analysis to develop awareness to
different of the company. For example, the company could want to measure consumer behavorior,

Taking a Look at Pediatric Cancer
As established in the National Cancer Institute, Cancer is the leading cause of death worldwide for
children and adolescents in America, accounting for more than 91,250 children that lose their lives to
this disease (National Cancer Institute). Cancer is not considered a terminal illness, but more of a
chronic illness because of the intense treatment that the individual has to endure. As a result of this
treatment the chances of survival for children suffering from pediatric cancer has increased around 80
percent. The increment in the survival rate has made it possible for many parents to not have to go
through the acceptance that they are about to lose their child to a terminal illness, but have coping
strategies that will make them adapt to the fear of the reoccurrence of that illness. This illness has a
great impact on the patient as well as the family because not only do they have to adapt to this illness
physically, but also mentally. Research has shown that there are both short term and long term effects
that come into effect when the child is both in treatment and also years after the treatment. The type of
cancers that these adolescents have to endure range from leukemia, brain tumors and other cancerous
tumors that have appeared in recent medical studies. These tumors can either be benignant, an acute
case that is non cancerous or malignant, a cancerous case that will need intense treatment over an
extended period of time. While many would say there is more of a

Healthy Racial Identity Development Among Older White Youth
Healthy racial identity development among older white youth is a bit more complex. Often, white
students must come to understand that society attaches meaning to their whiteness and that they have a
choice about how to be white in a multicultural society.
The American Civil Rights Movement was a movement of the people. Black and white, male and
female, Jew and Christian, rich and poor ordinary people who came together across differences to
advance this nation s core value of equality and demand an end to the discrimination against African
Americans.
Each year at the Civil Rights Memorial Center in Montgomery, Alabama, we welcome thousands of
visitors, many of them students on school sponsored trips. Among our goals is ensuring today ... Show

She went on to get her master s degree there in 1935. Academically, she was in the top five percent of
her graduating class. She was a public school teacher, a librarian in Montgomery s Carnegie Library
and later served as the director of research at the Montgomery Public Library.
Juliette Morgan was a woman of wealth, status, education and connections. She was an aristocrat of
Montgomery society. On the surface, she appeared to be the definitive Southern belle.
One seemingly insignificant thing about Morgan s life separated her from her privileged friends. She
had severe anxiety attacks. These attacks prevented her from driving her own car so, to get to work,
she rode the city buses in Montgomery. On those buses, she saw white bus drivers use the tone and
manners of mule drivers in their treatment of Negro passengers. She watched them threaten and
humiliate black men and women who paid the same 10 cent fare she paid.
From Socialite to Social Activist
In 1939, 16 years before the famous Montgomery Bus Boycott, Morgan began writing letters to the
Montgomery Advertiser, the city s local newspaper, denouncing the horrible injustices she witnessed
on the city buses. In these letters, she said segregation was un Christian and wrong, and the citizens of
Montgomery should do something about it. The response was immediate: Morgan lost her job at a
local bookstore.
One morning as she rode the bus, Morgan watched a black woman pay her fare and then leave

London 1908, Machinery Hall Essay

London 1908, Machinery Hall
This image represents the entrance to Machinery Hall of the 1908 Franco British Exhibition in
London. The original is one in a series of 3.5 x 5.5 inch postcards, printed by Valentine Sons Ltd. The
Machinery Hall covered 125,000 square yards. In this image it looks very elaborate, garish, and
reminiscent of Gothic architecture. The flags seen on the top of the building are French and British.
There are decorations looking like lanterns around the perimeter of the building. Within the context of
the fair, the pavilion was vast yet not imposing.
The London 1908 Exposition was located on an area of agricultural land in Shepherd s Bush, West
London, which provided 140 acres of land, close to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the Machinery Halls, heavy industry was represented by displays on mining, iron and steelwork,
armaments manufacture, shipbuilding, pumping and motive power machinery, electricity generation,
as well as textile and printing machinery. Many displayed objects were instruments of war such as a
gun carried on the backs of three dummy men. Warship firms displayed models of their scouts,
destroyers, armed cruisers and torpedo boats. War relics included an astrolabe of 1578, the barge of
the great Napoleon, the flat bottomed boats which the French used when they captured Algiers, and
some of the small cannons used on the gunwales of eighteenth century warships.
Numerous modern inventions were also featured. The steel and iron industry displayed flywheels, and
suction producers, while railway companies made a model of a Scenic Railway outside. The place of
honor in the French hall was taken by the great Pont à Mousson blast furnace. The London Electricity
Companies demonstrated modern cooking with electric range and kettles, and showed sewing
machines.
One of the great luxuries in the building was a free rest room, in the middle of which was a pleasant
fountain. The Franco British Exhibition: illustrated review commented on this idea: Remembering the
general comfortless ness of the grounds, it was a stroke of real genius to put that oasis of rest in the
centre of the grim and dour Machinery Halls.
The exhibition lasted from May 14 to October 31, 1908. The

Taking His Firearm As Well
He inched his way over to the second guard and bent down, taking his firearm as well. After he stood
back up, he let two more rounds go in the ceiling as he yelled for everyone to be quiet and stay down.
He took a deep breath and swallowed hard as the hair on the back of his neck began to stand up. If he
made one false move, one mistake could ruin this entire mission so he had to be careful, keep his eyes
open, and be quick. He ran up to the counter, yelling for the bank tellers to get on the ground as he
pointing the barrel at one of them, instructing her to get up and give him $10,000. She seemed
reluctant when she looked around at the other tellers who were cowering in fear so he let another
round go at the ceiling and pointed the barrel back down at her, yelling that she had better hurry up
because he was getting tired of shooting the ceiling. The teller got up, walked over to the safe, and
opened it as tears began to stream down her cheeks. A blinking number popped up on the screen,
started at one, and began to climb as the blond haired woman began putting money in a bag. The
number stopped at $7,000 and Osiris yelled at the teller, telling her that he hoped she didn t think he
wouldn t shoot her and she gasped as she began putting more money in the bag. Osiris turned around,
looking at the door as he began to hear police sirens then turned back to her, telling her to move faster.

The Anchoring Theory Of Lightness Perception

An analytical discussion on the Anchoring Theory of Lightness Perception
Gilchrist et al. (1999)

Abstract
The ability to perceive lightness is a key component in completing everyday tasks. However, due to
the variations in illumination and context, lightness perception theories fail to fully explain lightness
perception for all situations. The anchoring theory of lightness perception (Gilchrist et al., 1999)
successfully provides a theory that explains the accurate yet systematic inaccuracies of human
lightness perception under vast conditions (Murray,2013). These conditions are governed by
frameworks, which are groupings of surfaces that belong to each other more or less as determined by
5 factors; Depth, Orientation, Penumbrae, Junctions and Grouping (Gilchrist et al, 1999). However, as
anchoring occurs independently within each framework, other theories have been founded which
suggest that the human visual system uses the Gestalt laws of perceptual grouping to group regions
into factions, known as frameworks, where all regions in the single framework are expected to be
illuminated uniformly (Bressan, 2006).

From deciding whether to clean the car to recognising a particular brand, lightness is a key aspect in
everyday life. Yet, the process of how humans perceive lightness cannot be understood solely by one
theory of lightness perception. Currently, The Anchoring Theory of

  • 2. Cooperative Cation Binding Catalysis For Direct Generation... Abstract In this study, the concept of cooperative cation binding catalysis was elegantly applied for direct generation of two contiguous tertiary and quaternary stereogenic centers. Using a highly accessible chiral oligoethylene glycol (oligoEG) as a cation binding catalyst, asymmetric Mannich reaction of α thiocyanato cyclic ketones as Mannich donors was performed with α amido sulfones as the bench stable imine precursors in the presence of potassium fluoride as the base, affording α thiocyanato β amines possessing tetra substituted C SCN centers. The salient features of this process include (a) a transition metal free and operationally simple procedure, (b) direct use of α amido sulfones as bench stable precursors of sensitive imines, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In particular, chiral compounds with β amino α thiocyanate moieties are rarely explored in the medicinal chemistry area because of their synthetic difficulty,[5] although they are versatile precursors for the synthesis of β aminothiols,[6] β aminosulphonic acids,[7] and 2 iminothiazolidines,[8] present in some stereoselective catalysts, and many biologically and pharmacologically active compounds. To the best of our knowledge, only three related publications have been reported to date.[9,10] In 2013 Sala et al.[10a], and Babu and Parquette[10b] independently reported the asymmetric synthesis of β amino α thiocyanate compounds via the desymmetrization of meso aziridines with TMSNCS using combined Ca(II)/Mg(II) VAPOL phosphate salts and chiral dimeric yttrium salen complexes as catalysts. Quite recently, Nakamura et al. also reported the same transformation using chiral imidazoline−phosphoric ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Analysis Of Longitude By Dava Sobel Longitude by Dava Sobel was a book that explained in great detail the struggle to find longitude at sea and way it was so necessary. Sobel talked about the tragedies that followed with not finding longitude at sea and then the discoveries and trials that had occurred to find a final solution. Throughout the book, you understand the urgent need to find longitude why it was so hard, and what it really took in order to come to the final discovery. As you read through this paper you will get an understanding of the topics Sobel talked about in her book such as, the shipwrecks and tragedies that occurred without longitude at sea, the two competing methods to find longitude and the man who discovered it. There were many cases like these that inevitably made the problem of not knowing how to find longitude into an all out panic to solve it. Shipwreck after shipwreck, it became hard to ignore the issue at hand, so Parliament took action. In 1714, after countless merchants and seamen demanded help to find a solution Queen Anne put into action the Longitude Act, which was accompanied by three sets of money prizes. The first prize was in the amount of £20,000 and you had to come close to at least a half of a degree of a great circle. The second prize was in the amount of £15,000 and you had to be in two thirds of a degree, and finally, the third prize was £10,000 and that had to be within one degree. Along with the Longitude Act in order to figure out if methods that were proposed and explained were accurate, they created a Board of Longitude. The Board of Longitude was made up of many people like scientists, naval officers, and government officials but there were also ex officio members on the board as well. The board was given the ability to give out funds and grants to help competitors further their discoveries and help better them in order to discover a method of finding longitude. They also were able to find the accuracy of the discoveries that they were presented by sending them on trial runs and testing them on ships as they went on voyages but only from Great Britain to any of the ... • 4. The Importance Of Internet Privacy The purpose why internet privacy be invented is because the scientists hoped that the hardware, software and data in its network system can be protected from accidental and malicious damage, alteration, disclosure. Also wanted its system can be continuous and reliable Running, network service is not interrupted, etc. But as for today, there are still lots of aspects like viruses and rogue software are unchecked. The causes of virus and rogue software s rampant are both human factors and systemic vulnerabilities. In today s Internet world, Internet security seems to be considered an outdated idea. Instead of making security a priority, technology companies see it as an added way, not as a security measure. This can be referred to now there are many unsound places in the construction of Internet security. But at the same time, some technology companies and the government set special legal restrictions on them, but also can reflect its sound aspects. Obviously, legislation is the most effective and direct way to limit cybercrime and improve cyber security. In the original, there was no law that would prevent cybercrime from taking place. The company collected data about people s internet access, assembled it into detailed profiles, and sold it to advertisers or others without a request for permission. So it is best to see the support that appears on the web and the minimum privacy standards that are turned off. The article states that the Obama administration has called ... When Odysseus went to Sparta as a suitor he displayed his cunning personality, for this he quickly became famous. The King took notice of this and and accepted advice from him concerning how he can be sure of Helen s safety. Odysseus advised Tyndareus to make all the suitors swear an oath to protect Helen and the man she married (Odysseus). They all agreed and a man named Menelaus became the husband of Helen. According to the United Nations Office of Drugs and Crime, Bangladesh is a source, transit, and destination for human trafficking involving women, men, and children (1). A large proportion of cross border trafficking in Bangladesh is due to migration in search of employment. Most are subjected to forced labor or forced prostitution (3). Thousands of unreported children are trafficked from Bangladesh to other countries every year (2). Children who are taken by traffickers often come from impoverished or isolated regions. Pros Of Eugenics As a trained nurse in the slums and tenements of New York I had been brought face to face with conditions that made the so called sacredness of motherhood a term of unspeakable irony. Pregnant women drunken husbands hungry children, children born to a heritage of disease, filth, crime this was the order of that day. As one pregnancy followed another, a family sank deeper into the mire. And always denied contraceptive knowledge by their doctors, these women were driven to other means. A contract can end in many ways yet only two will be covered in this scenario namely performance and breach. Discharge by performance occurs when the parties have performed all their obligations. The latter may occur when a party fails to perform obligations or fails to achieve the terms and conditions set out in the contract. In order for the breaching party in this case LCL to be liable, it is vital to distinguish whether the condition is a mere representation or a term. This will depict whether the party is liable. If it s a mere representation this will generate a claim for misrepresentation rather than a breach of contract. In Birch v Paramount Estates it was specified that the greater the significance attached, the more likely it is a term. The construction work portrays an expressed term of the contract as it was incorporated in the contract. This constitutes a breach of contract as LCL have failed to accomplish the term outlined in the contract. Due to this, Mr Jones is entitled to recover damages as he has to arrange another company to complete the building work. The compensation Mr Jones is entitled to is namely quantum meruit as some of the terms incorporated in the contract were accomplished. As the breach is repudiatory meaning that a term has not been fulfilled, then the non breaching party in this case Mr Jones can either terminate or affirm the contract. • 15. History, Principles And Value Of Infant Observation Introduction To quote child analyst Esther Bick, one may have to sit with children for a long time completely in the dark about what is going on, until something suddenly comes up from the depth that illuminates it. (Bick 1962, p.632). Infant observation is a powerful tool when working with children that helps clarify what it is that comes up from the depth . This paper will briefly outline the history, principles and value in infant observation. I will then further examine my own experience of infant observation of four year old S. My observations of S had recurring themes of perfectionism, obsessive compulsive behaviours and avoidance. S was extremely shy and constantly sought teacher approval. By examining attachment theory, the emotions of shame and guilt, containment, the drive to know, mental pain and false self, I was able to psychoanalysis S s unconscious thoughts and feelings which were conveyed in her behaviour. History of Psychotherapy and Infant Observation Sigmund Freud is known as the founder of psychotherapy. Freud was interested in the emotional relationship between the past and the present, and the feelings it generated. Subsequently Abraham (1924), Klein (1928), Fairbairn (1952) among others, further developed Freud s work of the emotional life. They examined the earliest relationships of infancy and the processes these set up within the developing mind. Suspected factors of influence include dopamine hyperactivity, disordered sensory feedback, linguistic deficits, anticipation of speech difficulties, generalized motor deficits, speech specific motor deficits, environmental factors, and genetic factors (Max et al., 2004). Currently, it is widely agreed upon that genetic factors have a substantial role in the aetiology of stuttering. Studies in twins have shown an increased rate of stuttering in monozygotic twins than in dizygotic twins 77% prevalence versus 32% prevalence (Felsenfeld et al., 2000). In addition to genetic factors, environmental factors include birth events, traumas or illnesses, stress, and peer influences (Felsenfeld et al., 2000). On the contrary, Michaela believes that both genetics and environment play a rather minimal role in stuttering. Scientific literature suspects that genetics have a profound influence on stuttering. He also started the League of Gileadites, which was organized to aid runaway slaves fleeing to Canada. He later moved to a free black farming community in New York. In 1856, at the age of 55, Brown and his sons moved to Kansas Territory, John Brown accompanied by a small army of his four sons and two other men set out along the Pottawatomie Creek and brutally murdered five men and boys whom they believed were promoting slavery. • 19. The Emigration Of The United States While the United States were determined to expand across the North American continent by exercising Manifest Destiny, there were a huge number of immigrants arriving into the nation. The sudden increase of immigrants entering the country led to disputes over who was American and who was a foreigner. Native born Americans, specifically the nativist group strongly opposed the massive influx of immigrants coming from all different countries because the nativists were anti foreign and anti Catholic. These people were trying to form a distinction and limitation on who was an American citizen with rights. In the 1850s, the Know Nothing Party emerged as a reaction to the migration of European immigrants. The Know Nothing Party was a secret organization amongst members but slowly became known to the public as another political party. This political party resolved to limit foreigners and Catholics from participating in politics or holding any form of power in society. Thus, the Irish immigrants were mainly targeted because of their religion. Discrimination of the Irish based on religion demonstrates that British prejudices about the Irish and Catholics carried over into the New Republic. In the United States, like most immigrants, the Irish were doing all the low pay, manual, and unprofessional jobs. The nativists were worried that the Irish immigrants were tarnishing the image of urbanized country America was establishing at the time. The social status of the Irish was ... Bizzozero Staining Procedure An experiment Evaluating whether PCNA supports the classification of Bizzozero (1894) tissues tissues placed in three categories, reflecting their replicative potential. Introduction The aim of this experiment was to utilise PCNA and staining procedures to determine whether different tissue cell samples proliferate. Tissue which exhibited brown stains prove cell proliferation and mitotic divisions, this would suggest it being the in the first group of Bizzozero s grouping of tissue types. Tissue samples which showed no brown staining meant no cells had proliferated and therefore were of a different tissue type that do not regenerate while present in the body. The PCNA protein is present during cell division/mitosis therefore, its presence suggests that cell proliferation is occurring or has occurred. An area can be stained using brown diaminobenzidine (DAB) by using an antibody that is against the PCNA protein. That year, 1969, is also during the Cold War between the governments of the Soviet Union and the United States. And this victory, neither convinced Soviet Aeroflot of their lagging behind in the space race, nor explained well the flaws of collected pictures the NASA presented during the mission. The confirmation of enchantment by Morgan le Faye (ll. 2446 2462) finishes the plot as it began it: in a state of magical unreality. Such enchantment is typical of modern fantasy, particularly from writers of modern fairy tales. Indeed, Ellen Datlow and Terri Windling have essentially made their careers editing compilations of these tales, such as the popular Snow White, Blood Red and its several follow ups. To increase the fairy tale style feel of the story, the Green Knight is called an elf (ll. 680, 2461) and faery. (l. 240) There is clear indication that this can easily be called a fairy tale. The commonality of these four categories of luck is the idea that one cannot be more culpable or estimable for anything than one is for that fraction of it which is under one s control. It seems irrational to take or dispense credit or blame for matters over which a person has no control, or for their influence on results over which he has partial control. (Nagel, p.28). Williams also delivers the idea of agent regret which, to him, matters to the person in the unlucky case more than any extrinsic moral judgments. Agent regret is defined as thought being formed in part by first personal conceptions of how one might have acted otherwise , (Williams, p.27), and required a first personal subject matter and not yet merely a particular kind of psychological content, but also a particular kind of expression , (Williams, 27). Poverty could be considered one of the obvious reasons for this gap in IQ scores for example, schools in poverty stricken areas could receive less funding and opportunities for more money then schools in areas that aren t affected by poverty. Less funding means less everything pretty much that a school needs (books, computers that chance of having good staff to teach these kids). Without being given some of these tools that schools need to succeed, could greatly affect the kids in it and obviously will affect their intelligence level at some stage. I have some friends that are teachers, in the Bronx as well as areas in Westchester like White Plains, etc. They could tell you first hand there are clear differences in every aspect of a school in the south Bronx in comparison to a White Plains school district. To be culturally biased is the phenomenon of interpreting and judging phenomena by standards inherent to one s own culture. In 1780 one person proposed an idea to reconstruct our government; Alexander Hamilton proposed a general convention to frame a new constitution (Beard 3). The Article of Confederation was failing and the several men wanted a change to form a stronger national government. Some states excelled under the Article of Confederation while others struggled, there was no whole as a nation only sovereignty for the states. In 1787 the Framers changed the future of the United States of America and formed the constitution; which we still currently use. It took 9 states to ratify the constitution; 9 who believed in the best for the people. Still to this day we run our government off of a document made over ... The states if they agreed upon it could amend this if they were to call a convention. The Failure to specify rights of privacy is another flaw (2). The constitution does not specify many things but rather only idealizes the general idea. Framers made the constitution this way. From these flaws and broad controversy s leads us into prevents us from a rise of a powerful faction. While realizing several things do need to change in the constitution, there should not be a brand new constitution. If we specified everything there would be fewer factions which become dangerous in our democracy (Madison 5). Another thing that should be addressed is the amount of power Congress possesses compared to states; the power produces lack of trust and hate towards Congress. The reason on why people hate Congress so much is because the amount of taxes that the citizens of the United States have to pay toward the national government, some states don t even see back the money they have to invest towards the ... • 40. Argumentative Essay On Antiheron A hero is someone who always is brave and fearless in the face of danger. He is not flawed and is admired for his heroic deeds by everyone while an antihero is one who lacks the conventional attributes of a hero. When we look at the definition of heroes, most people cannot relate to it. We make mistakes sometimes whereas traditional heroes do not make mistakes, and they are perfect. We compromise on certain issues even if it will not benefit everyone; traditional hero do not compromise, yet they want to make everyone happy by making the right decision while defeating evil vices. Most people cannot relate to traditional heroes because at some point in their lives, they have made mistakes and compromised on certain situations. The popularity of antiheroes benefits the society because everyone feels included in heroic acts in different ways. Antiheroes are more relatable to the people than traditional heroes. To be or not to be well educated: A Narrative Response to Alfie Kohn s What does it mean to be well educated? Alfie Kohn s essay What does it mean to be well educated? begins on a personal note using his wife as an example to substantiate his hypothesis. Nevertheless, something is imbibed. Education in a good school does seem to show in the kind of person you become and whether anything is remembered or not the molding influence is indelible. Secondly good education when put to use is much handier when compared to a lower grade of education. Kohn s question of consensus set me rapidly agreeing with him. Levels of education do vary between countries, states, and even the past and present. What is well educated in one country may not be up to standard in another (2003, par. 9). Today a person with a doctorate in India is well respected and highly valued in his/her country but when the same person wishes to teach in America or Britain he/she must acquire a teaching certification as most of the time local credentials are not accepted. The next stage of Kohn s reasoning involved ruling out what might not be considered as being well educated. Being well educated does not depend on the number of hours spent in class, how well prepared for a career one is, test scores, or rote learning (2003, pars. 12 15). Although intelligent students do get good test scores this does not happen all of the time as there are several smart students who do not seem to perform well. Also, and in this as in the previous point I completely agree with Kohn, memorizing everything that is just a click away on the internet does not necessarily translate into being considered well educated. ... Taking a Look at Pediatric Cancer As established in the National Cancer Institute, Cancer is the leading cause of death worldwide for children and adolescents in America, accounting for more than 91,250 children that lose their lives to this disease (National Cancer Institute). Cancer is not considered a terminal illness, but more of a chronic illness because of the intense treatment that the individual has to endure. As a result of this treatment the chances of survival for children suffering from pediatric cancer has increased around 80 percent. The increment in the survival rate has made it possible for many parents to not have to go through the acceptance that they are about to lose their child to a terminal illness, but have coping strategies that will make them adapt to the fear of the reoccurrence of that illness. This illness has a great impact on the patient as well as the family because not only do they have to adapt to this illness physically, but also mentally. Research has shown that there are both short term and long term effects that come into effect when the child is both in treatment and also years after the treatment. The type of cancers that these adolescents have to endure range from leukemia, brain tumors and other cancerous tumors that have appeared in recent medical studies. One seemingly insignificant thing about Morgan s life separated her from her privileged friends. She had severe anxiety attacks. These attacks prevented her from driving her own car so, to get to work, she rode the city buses in Montgomery. On those buses, she saw white bus drivers use the tone and manners of mule drivers in their treatment of Negro passengers. She watched them threaten and humiliate black men and women who paid the same 10 cent fare she paid. From Socialite to Social Activist In 1939, 16 years before the famous Montgomery Bus Boycott, Morgan began writing letters to the Montgomery Advertiser, the city s local newspaper, denouncing the horrible injustices she witnessed on the city buses. In the Machinery Halls, heavy industry was represented by displays on mining, iron and steelwork, armaments manufacture, shipbuilding, pumping and motive power machinery, electricity generation, as well as textile and printing machinery. Many displayed objects were instruments of war such as a gun carried on the backs of three dummy men. Warship firms displayed models of their scouts, destroyers, armed cruisers and torpedo boats. War relics included an astrolabe of 1578, the barge of the great Napoleon, the flat bottomed boats which the French used when they captured Algiers, and some of the small cannons used on the gunwales of eighteenth century warships. Numerous modern inventions were also featured. The steel and iron industry displayed flywheels, and suction producers, while railway companies made a model of a Scenic Railway outside. The place of honor in the French hall was taken by the great Pont à Mousson blast furnace. The London Electricity Companies demonstrated modern cooking with electric range and kettles, and showed sewing machines. • 48. The Anchoring Theory Of Lightness Perception Word count: 1613 An analytical discussion on the Anchoring Theory of Lightness Perception Gilchrist et al. (1999) Isabel Villafuerte 695563 Melbourne University Abstract The ability to perceive lightness is a key component in completing everyday tasks. However, due to the variations in illumination and context, lightness perception theories fail to fully explain lightness perception for all situations. The anchoring theory of lightness perception (Gilchrist et al., 1999) successfully provides a theory that explains the accurate yet systematic inaccuracies of human lightness perception under vast conditions (Murray,2013). These conditions are governed by frameworks, which are groupings of surfaces that belong to each other more or less as determined by 5 factors; Depth, Orientation, Penumbrae, Junctions and Grouping (Gilchrist et al, 1999). However, as anchoring occurs independently within each framework, other theories have been founded which suggest that the human visual system uses the Gestalt laws of perceptual grouping to group regions into factions, known as frameworks, where all regions in the single framework are expected to be illuminated uniformly (Bressan, 2006). (Words 154) From deciding whether to clean the car to recognising a particular brand, lightness is a key aspect in everyday life. Yet, the process of how humans perceive lightness cannot be understood solely by one theory of lightness perception. Currently, The Anchoring Theory of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
