infections may be underlying causes of the disease. There are many theories and studies are being
conducted to determine whether bacteria or viruses are playing some role in the development of AD
and other forms of dementia.
To understand how microbes may be involved in AD, we first must look at what physically happens to
the brain with this disease. There are two distinct aspects involved in Alzheimer s disease; beta
amyloid plaques and tau tangles. Beta amyloid plaques are formed when the amyloid precursor protein
(APP) which is present in the membrane of neurons (alz.org) is cleaved off by beta and gamma
secretases (Chen et al., 2001). In a normal brain, alpha secretase does the cleaving and the body

bored with his typical day to day life and decides to spend his life savings on a yearlong trip around

little princes mainly out of a sense of guilt rather than an actual desire to help. Expecting it to be a

segregation. Maya and her older brother Bailey are only three and four when they are sent to their

The qualitative article being appraised is by Martin and Woods (2012) using the CASP tool qualitative
framework (CASP 2013). These tools have been validated to ensure that studies can be assessed in a
consistent way assessing the trustworthiness of the research article (Aveyard, 2014)
Qualitative research can often be labelled as biased and anecdotal however Anderson (2010) argues
that when carried out rigorously it can be unbiased, in depth and creditable, in fact becoming a leading
research method for evidence based nursing. White (2006) explains that when the research is based on
people s perceptions then qualitative research is appropriate, it aids in developing an understanding for
peoples understanding, feelings values and opinions. Qualitative research seeks to develop
explanations for social trends/events, thus encouraging detail and depth whilst creating openness
(Bamberger, 2000). In addition IVONNE (2004) reasons that qualitative research gives brand new
insights by providing differing ideas on current practices. On the other hand, Abawl (2008) highlights
that data collection can be very time consuming, open to interpretation and consequently influenced
by researcher bias.
CASP sets out a series of questions that can be used to critically appraise qualitative research, and help
to identify if the article contains bias, is relevant and creditable.

Mrs Midas Critical Commentary
The poem, Mrs Midas is written from the perspective of the wife of King Midas; a character from
Ovid s Metamorphoses . In the myth, King Midas was granted a wish where everything he touched
turned to gold. Mrs Midas is part of a tradition of the feminist revisionist writing of mythology and
fair tales. Duffy trivialises the myth by transplanting it to a modern, middle class, suburban setting. In
the poem, Duffy uses a wide range of literary devices and conveys a large array of emotions which
help to bring out the central themes of the poem.
In stanza one Duffy depicts a conventional, middle class domestic setting; where the speaker, Mrs
Midas is cooking vegetables and begins to unwind with a glass of wine . The quote, glass of wine
emphasises the middle class, suburban setting and highlights revisionist element of the poem. Duffy
writes stanzas one retrospectively, It was late September . Duffy uses this quote to set the scene but
more importantly to indicate the fact that the event has already happened. This conveys the idea that
the poem is being told as a story. In stanza one Duffy personifies the kitchen, with the line, its steamy
breath gently blanching the windows . The quote emphasises that the kitchen is coming to life. Also
the use of the simile, like a brow helps to convey the kitchen as a living thing. The word gently is used
