2. There were several comments made about the
genre of music that I chose which has made me
consider whether or not my magazine would meet the needs of my target
audience. Such comments as, “R&B is not for all”. “Rap, Hip Hop and Soul
normally go hand-in-hand”, this has made me think about expanding the type of
music that my magazine will cover to include some or all of the genre of music
mentioned. I will need to do more research in this area.
I asked my audience to give feedback about the different magazine names that
I came up with. There were two that they liked the most. For the name “Swish
G”those who commented liked the idea that the “G” which could stand for a
variety of different things e.g. Girl, Guys, Groove etc which would add mystery
to the name of the magazine. The majority of the audience liked the name
“Dignity”. I particularly liked the comment that one person said “The name
Dignity is quite inspirational for a magazine. It gives a positive image to a
genre of music that is often seen as negative. When I think about dignity, I
think about having pride in myself so I hope that your magazine articles is about
pride and aspirational”. Once I read this comment, I decided on the name
Dignity for my magazine, and to make sure that the article’s theme of the
magazine is about subjects that makes the audience feel proud and inspired.
3. My original proposal was to aim my magazine at
teenagers, between the ages of 16 – 25 years, who
are interested in R&B music. Having read the
feedback, I believe that I have got the right target
audience but will need to look at the cost of the
magazine to make sure that the frequency of the
release of each issue (e.g. weekly, fortnightly, monthly
etc) does not make it too expensive for this target
audience to afford the magazine. The other
comments that I received was aimed at looking at the
gender of the target audience – I will need to do more
research about the cost and gender issues raised.
4. Most of the comments received about my contents page
stated that I should make my magazine contents page as
eye catching as the cover page - as the cover page is
what attracts them to the magazine while it is sitting on the
shelf; and it is the contents page that helps make their
mind up to buy it or not. I particularly like the comment “…
I like contents pages that list contents and has pictures
linked into the main story”. One person asked about the
“theme” of the main magazine articles. This is something
that I hadn’t given much thought to. Having had some
time to think about this area, I have decided that the
theme will now be about real life, inspirational stories
about music artists. This ties in to the comment made
about the title “dignity” in that the stories should be
inspirational and make the reader feel proud.
5. The types of comments that I received about this
area were not very helpful, as the majority felt that
they did not care who published the magazine.
There was one comment that I found to be very
helpful i.e. “IPC is a consumer/digital magazine
and your magazine is aimed at R&B music.
Would IPC be the right company to publish it?”
Having read this comment, I feel that I need to do
some more research into this area i.e. find out the
name of publishers of my genre of music
magazine, and decide on who will publish it and
why I chose them rather than other companies.
