The document provides feedback on two magazine covers - a college magazine and music magazine - created by a student. For the college magazine, the color scheme was effective but the photo could be improved by ensuring the full subject is shown. Feedback on the music magazine praised the simpler colors and design. The music magazine cover photography showed more detail and thought. The contents pages also received feedback, with the music magazine contents page using techniques like split sections that showed improvement over the college magazine. The document discusses the software and new skills learned in creating the magazines, such as using InDesign and Illustrator.

College & Music Magazine Design Critique

2. College magazine – Cover
page colour scheme
A lot of use of black
Not sure what message
that you are trying to get
across
Colour scheme works well.
Definitely achieved the
„studenty‟ look
College magazine – Cover
page photography
More thought needs to be
put into the subject of the
photo – you‟ve got half of
someone in it.
Good use of photography,
make it looks like you caught
the student studying without
her knowing.
Music magazine – Cover page colour
scheme
I don‟t like dark colours that you used in
the other magazine, but I like the
colours in this.
Attracted by the simplicity of the design
Love the design of the magazine‟s
name
The front cover is not for me, it is more
for the younger generation. I don‟t
know any of the bands, but it looks
good.
It looks like you have put a lot more
thought in the overall design of the
magazine and it shows.
Music magazine – Cover page
photography
I can see a lot more detail and
thought has been put into your
work.

these colours contrasted

9. Software that I was already use to and used to create
the front cover:
Photoshop – used for creating layers on both of the
magazines. As I was already familiar with software
due to my work in graphics design, I was able to
transfer my knowledge and skills over to my media
coursework. I was happy with the outcomes of both
magazine designs. My main concern was using
equipment that I was not familiar with e.g. the
college‟s camera. Getting the right lighting effect
was essential for me to attract my audience. I
believe that my music magazine shows a great
improvement within this area.
10. New software that I learned about during the development of
my magazines were:
Adobe Indesign – used to create both of the content pages
for the music and college magazine. I was happy with my
first attempt with making the college‟s contents page, as I
need to learn about positioning the text, and deleting the
background from the original image. I continued to use
these skills in my music made, but was also able to create
boxes, retain the original tones and colours while enlarging
the image without making it look like a „stretched affect‟;
how to put borders around text; and how to change a colour
image into black and white and adjust the contrast and
tone.
Adobe Illustrator – used to create the masthead for the music
magazine but not for the college. In the college magazine I
just used ordinary text to create it. In the music magazine I
decided to learn about this new software, and you can see
that I have made great improvement in the impact that the
masthead has for readers of the magazine. I learned how to
stretch the tail-end of letters e.g. the letter “y” to help create
a border/ underline for the name of my magazine and how
to add two colours to a single letter.
