1. Question 1 In what way does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of a real media product?
2. The genre of my magazine is Indie music, with an art and natural earthy approach. Through my research I noticed there were not any magazines that included those specific features all together, this confirms that I found a possible gap in the market and challenged typical conventions. For example, in the magazines I researched, such as "Losing Today", they used fonts that were sans- serif to connote sophistication and to create impact for a rebellious audience. Whereas my magazine is also combining art, I used serif fonts that were still simple but were more creative.
3. I also included a font that looked rough and faded called "Impact Label Reversed" to keep with the rebellious side. The codes and conventions of my magazine had to stay within my genres typical conventions but challenge the market when I included a more creative style. When picking my colours, I wanted to keep them calm and sophisticated but also have a rebellious feel, which is why I picked a black and white image along with blues and greens inside, these colours are also unisex and appeal to both male and female readers.
4. In comparison with other music magazines, I have used the typical conventions such as a Masthead, coverlines, issue date, bar-code, price and direct mode of address. Using direct mode address makes the reader feel more included in the magazine, I have asked questions to the readers on my cover, such as "Want to win..?". I have also used direct mode of address in my contents page such as, "We want You With us!".
5. Along with other real magazines, I have used a masthead with a meaning. “NME” was one of the magazines I researched, which stands for New Musical Express. Although this magazine is more popular and mainstream than my ideas, it still has a title people could seek the meaning of. “Losing today” and “Artrocker” are also titles, connoting rebellion, laziness, talent and fun. I wanted my magazine also to have a title that stood out, and made readers think about what it meant.
6. I also used a minimum amount of pictures, exactly like the magazines I researched, “losing today” had one single photograph on the front, covering the entire page, so I did this for my magazine too because it was straight to the point and effective.
7. I wanted my magazine to be something to read not just to look at, which magazines such as “Art Rocker” and “Losing today” do well, they include larger fewer pictures, simple layouts, and good solid areas of text. I also kept to these designs, but made the layout and details a little more creative.
