2. What is your gender?
The first question I asked
in my survey was the
gender of the people
answering the quiz. I felt
it was important to find
out as I wanted my
magazine to be
appealing to both
males and females. I
was lucky enough to
have an equal amount
of both males and
females to give me
feedback regarding my
magazines.
3. What age are you?
The second question i
asked was for the age of
people answering the
questions in my survey. I
wanted to know the age
range of people
answering so as to relate
to the age group that I
am targeting. The
majority of people that
answered my survey
were roughly fourteen
and above, which is the
target age for my
magazine.
4. If you saw a magazine in a shop what
would convince you to buy it?
I asked the question of
what would convince
readers to buy the
magazine if they saw it in
a shop so as to know
what I should include on
my title page. The results
of this survey showed that
it was the main image
that would convince the
target audience to by
the magazine. For this
reason i have my main
artist as the single image
on the cover so as to
draw fans of him
immediately into wanting
to read, and therefore
purchase the magazine.
5. If a magazine offered competitions to win
concert tickets would you enter?
I asked this question to
find out whether or not it
was worth including a
competition in my
magazine, and
advertising the fact that
there was one included.
Due to the feedback i
received i felt it would be
beneficial to include the
offer of a chance to win
tickets to the UK’s hottest
festival. I feel as though
the inclusion of this offer
will be beneficial in
regards to making
people more inclined to
buy my magazine.
6. What colour scheme would most appeal to
you?
I wanted to ask people
what colour scheme they
thought would bestbe
appropriate for my
magazine. The colour
scheme they chose was
red+white+black which is
one that fits in with the
genreIhave chosen for
my magazine. I offered
options which were
thought common
featured on magazines
of the indie rock genre. I
have taken this into
account and this colour
scheme will be featured,
if not on the cover, but
within my magazine.
7. What would you prefer a double page
spread to be on?
I wanted to know what
people would most
appreciate as the article for
my double page spread.
The answer strongly sided
for an article on an artist
with a new album out. Due
to the results of this
feedback this is what Ihave
based my article to be on.
As there were also quite a
few votes for it to be about
an up and coming
artist,Ihave included both
elements into the article.
For this reason my article is
based on an upcoming
artist with a new album out,
therefore based on the
results it would be an article
that people would want to
read.
8. How much would you pay for a music
magazine?
I asked this question to get
an understanding as to
roughly how much people
would pay for a music
magazine. The majority of
people voted the price of
£2-£3. This is what I was
expecting, my magazine is
not suited towards a vastly
upper class target market
who may perhaps spend
more on a magazine. The
price range that received
the highest votes is too the
price range for most music
magazines of my genre that
are currently out on the
market.
9. What title is best for a music magazine of
the indie genre?
I was very unsure as to
choosing a title for my
magazine and putting
this question into my
survey helped make my
decision much easier. I
offered four names white
I had come up with and
was lucky enough to
have results in which one
of them was quite highly
favoured. The
conventions for music
magazines of this genre
regarding the title are
quite simple, there is
usually one word or if
more than word words it
is just the initials that are
used. Examples of this
would be the magazine
‘NME’.
10. would you rather the magazine had one main
image on the cover, or featured a few different
images of artists on the cover also?
Whilst deciding how I would
lay out my magazine cover
the inclusion of this question
in my survey helped me a
great amount. It clarified
my original plans to only
include one image of the
main artist. This too is often
thought common on the
majority of magazines,
although many that I
looked at for inspiration did
include small images at the
edge of the cover possibly
to promote an exclusive
article or simply to inform
the reader of another artist
featured in the magazine
from just a quick glance at
the cover.
11. How would you rather know what artists are
included in the magazine?
It is evidently important that
at a quick glance the target
audience are able to know
if their preferred artists have
features in a magazine. I
therefore took the answer I
received in this survey,
altering it slightly, and put it
into use. I do have mention
of the featured artists on the
cover, however I have also
added an element known
as a ‘band index’ in my
contents page. This is a
section featured in the left
third of the contents page
containing a list of all artists
mentioned of featured in
the magazine. Therefore it is
easy for the target audience
to be able to know what
artists are included in the
magazine.
