There are several types of wooden churches in Slovakia, with the oldest being Roman Catholic churches built in the Gothic style in the 15th century. Examples include the churches of Hervartov and Tvrdošín. Lutheran churches have a distinctive floor plan in the shape of a Greek cross, with five such churches existing in Slovakia like the one in Hronsek. Greek Catholic churches were built between the 17th-19th centuries and there are 27 surviving examples, such as the Church of St. Michael the Archangel in Nova Sedlica and the Church of St. Nicholas the Bishop in Ruská Bystrá. All the wooden churches were constructed entirely from wood without nails.
