The Dobrovat church

  2. 2. <ul><li>The Monastery of Dobrovăţ is located a t 25 km from Iaşi , in the middle of a forest . </li></ul><ul><li>The church is the last foundation of the great Moldavian ruler: Steven the Great (Romanian - Ştefan cel Mare). </li></ul><ul><li>He had begun to build the church in 1503 and his son, Bogdan the third, finished it in 1504. Later on, a n other son of Steven the Great, Petru Rareş , painted the church . </li></ul>The tower was built in the XVIIIth century. It is 30 m high and has three floors: the first was the dwelling of the watchmen, the second was a small chapel and the third becalmed the bell .
  3. 3. <ul><li>The church has no towers , but it had a roof “in waters”. </li></ul><ul><li>It has four halls: the “ pronaos ”, the grave room, the nave – “ naos ” and the altar . </li></ul><ul><li>The walls are thick and backed by strong buttresses. </li></ul>From an architectonic point of view , this monument is built in Moldavian Style, with Gothic influences. It is made of stone and it has a rectangular plan, rounded in the eastern part, where the altar is situated .
  4. 4. <ul><li>This are the ornaments on the walls, on the outside. </li></ul><ul><li>The church’s windows are in broken arch. </li></ul>
  5. 5. <ul><li>The door is built in Gothic style, one can see here the broken arch. </li></ul><ul><li>In the past, the church was painted, but in time the painting has faded. </li></ul>The students of Ion Creanga school in front of Dobrovăț church in July 2008
  6. 6. This is the inscription above the door, that tells us the time and the person who built the church. The inscription is written in Slave language.
  7. 7. <ul><li>In these photos one can see the inside of the church: the sculpture around the doors, the thickness of the walls. </li></ul>

  9. 9. The votive picture: you can see the third founders - Steven the Great, Bogdan the Third and Petru Rares; they are offering the church to Jesus Christ.
