General informations Slovakia is a country with many ancient towns, in which we can find original and also mediaeval buildings. A lot of places have their historical centre and we can see here also cultural sights or urban castle.
18 places in Slovakia are urban monument reservation. Bardejov and Banská Štiavnica are the towns including in the list of world cultural heritage UNESCO. The most urban ancient reservations are in region Spiš and in mining towns. Each city offers its visitors a rich variety of historic sightseeing tour.
Bratislava Bratislava is the capital city of Slovakia. Bratislava castle is dominant with its four towers. The river Danube flows under the castle. Historical centre of city called Old city is very interesting. Michael´s gate, different squares and St. Martin cathedral – the place of coronation ugrian kings belongs to Old city.
The Park of Janko Kráľ in Bratislava is very famous in Europe. It was named by popular poet from 19th century.o You can see the castle from this park.
Trnava Trnava was the first royal town. You can see the Town Tower, Town Hall, many churches and Baroque building complex of Trnava University here. You can visit many churches that make Trnava got epithet Little Rome. St.Nicholas Church
Banská Štiavnica Banská Štiavnica is in the list of the world cultural heritage UNESCO. It was mine town and even today people can find here natural mine museum. In this town you can see the Bell-tower, Town Hall and St. Katrin church from 15th century. Old castle was fortress protected town in 16th century.
Bardejov Bardejov is precious historical town and it belongs among the nicest and the most gothic towns in Slovakia. His part are urban gates built in 14th century. Wallwork of town consists of several bastions. Town hall was built at the beginning of 16th century. St.Egídia church is gothic basilica, important sacral building in Slovakia.
Levoča It is situated in eastern Slovakia in the region Spiš. Town known with famous gothic wooden altar of Master Pavol from Levoča. (St. Jakub church)
Nitra Nitra is regional and at the same time the fifth biggest city in Slovakia. Our town Vráble lies in this district too. Dominant of Nitra is the castle and a lot of sacral sights,churches,the Calvary and complex of historical buidings in Pribina square. The princes Pribina, Svätopluk and Mojmír lived in this castle. The sculpture of Cyril and Method is in front of the castle.
Other historical places Trenčín –Monarch called Matúš Čák Trenčiansky made famous the castle in this town. Spiš castle was registered to UNESCO World Heritage in 1993. Spiš castle belongs to biggest castles in Europa. It is created by renaissance and gothic buildings, that were built gradually by various monarchs.
In the town Bojnice you can visit very beautiful castle. It is our national culture memory. Palfy family was the last family living here. The castles of Slovakia are connected with many legends and stories, but about them we will speak next time.
Other monuments Vlkolínec is a little old village with 45 houses and people still live here. There are original wooden houses characteristic for Central European region and part of Slovakia in historical time. The museum Vlkolínec was written to UNESCO World Heritage List in 1993. Pribylina is beautiful culture monuments too, it is Liptov village museum and show how people lived in Slovakia in the past.
