2. • Benign (non cancerous) breast conditions are unusal growths or other
changes in the breast tissue that are not cancer
• A benign breast condition refers to a lump cyst, or nipple discharge of
the female or male breast that is non cancerous
3. Common types of benign breast lumps:
• Abscess:
A breast abscess is a pocket of pus that causes inflammation and a sore
lump in the breast
• Cyst
A cyst is a fluid filled sac that develops in the breast tissue. They most
often happen in women between the ages of 35 and 50 yrs are common in
those nearing menopause
Breast cyst can be tender and lumpy, but they don’t make you more prone
to cancer
Cysts often go away by itself without treatment
4. • Fibroadenomas
These are the most common non cancerous solid breast tumors
found in women ages 15 to 35 yrs.
Fibroadenomas don’t increase cancer risk.
It is non cancerous mass made up of fibroglandular breast tissue and
connective tissue
5. • Fibrocystic breast changes:
Fluctuating hormone levels can make breasts feel lumpy, dense and
tender, especially before mensturation.
There is no real disease or disorder
6. • Mammary duct ectasia (Periductal mastitis):
Menopausal and post menopausal women are more prone to
mamary duct ectasia.
It is non cancerous breast condition causing inflammation (swelling
and thickening of milk ducts).
7. • Traumatic fat necrosis
These breast lumps from when scar tissue replaces breast tissue
thats been damaged by an injury, surgery or radiation therapy.
These lumps don’t raise cancer risk and don’t need treatment.
8. • Atypical hyperplasia:
• It is abnormal cells in the breast tissue
• They are a marker for increased breast cancer
• Intraductal Papilloma:
• These small, wart-like growth from inside the mammary duct near the
nipple
9. • Gynecomastia
This doesn’t need to be treatment unless it causes pain.
Some patient choose to have the tissue reduced surgically or with
hormones
Galactocele (milk retention cysts):
These are fluid filled masses usually caused by blocked milk duct
10. • Hematoma:
A hematoma is a blood filled mass caused by injury or a surgical
procedure of the breast
• Sclerosing adenosis:
It is excess growth of tissues in the breast
11. • Cystosarcoma phyllodes:
It is a rare types of breast tumor
The pattern of their cells resembles leaves and the name phyllodes
comes from the Greek word meaning leaf like
It can grow quickly, but they don’t spread beyod the breast.
12. Causes of benign breast disease
Changes in breast tissue (fibrocystic breast tissue)
Breast infection (mastitis)
Scar tissue from a breast injury
Hormone fluctuation, especially during menstruation, pregnancy or
menopause
Medication use, such as hormonal contraceptives and HRT
Caffeinated beverages

Dimpled, puckered or scaly breast

16. Treatment
Some benign breast conditons can cause discomfort or pain and need
treatment. Others don’t need treatment
Many benign breast conditions mimic the signs and symptoms of
breast cancer. These condition will need follow up tests and biopsy
FNAC (fine needle aspiration cytology):- this help in treatment of the
cyst as the fluid is aspirated the cyst collapsed.
Simple drain of the cyst can be performed
Surgically removal of the growth cell, cysts of the breast
Lumpectomy, chemotherapy and radiation therapy can be done
