“Journeying the Teacher Profession: Myself and My Career”
INTRODUCTION/OVERVIEW:
What do you see on the picture? Where do we usually use it?
Most of us love to travel or a road trip or to go any of places we want even in the mall,
market or park. There are too many possibilities of what you may experience while travelling, the
road may have not good condition like being bumpy or muddy or your car is out of gasoline so
you need to refill it. If this will happen to you, are you still decided to continue on the place you
are planning to go to?
This the concept of having a career in teaching or any professions. There are too many
factors we may consider why an individual experience obstacles on the race or road he/she is taking
to. We may say, because of his/her bad decision-making or she/he was taken by the flow of his/her
environment resulting on the career he/she don’t want to go to. Going through on the career you
want to go is a decision-making that affects your own life-long career path. That’s why we need
to think of the possibilities of undergoing on that career.
In this path you where you are now, it’s up to you if you will continue or begin to travel on
the other path or racetrack. That’s why wise decisions take long because we plan every detail –
it’s a CAREER PLANNING.
French word “carriere”
which means a road or
race course
Latin word “cararia”
which refers to track for
wheeled vehicles.
PRESENTATION/ CONTENT:
The career planning is also something to do with the decision-making.
The idea of career can be traced back in the beginning of the 20th century. Prior to this,
early practice of most individuals was to automatically adopt the occupations of their parents.
Below is a tabular presentation of the history of career planning;
1950s to
1960s
•In the Philippines, parents wanted their children to earn a degree
•Being a teacher was highly regarded in the community.
1970s
•The National College EntranceExamination (NCEE) was introduced in
order to distinguish those who wereeligible to take a degree course
fromthose who should take a vocational-technicalcourse.
1990s
•During the early 1990s, education, nursing and secretarialcourses were associated with
women.
•New courses like computer science, computer technology, management information system
and web-designing.
•The parents obliged their children to take up courses that would provide them jobs.

The Career planning process is comprised of four steps;
1. Knowing yourself (self)
Gather information about yourself (self-

b. Where do I want to be?
c. What do I want out of a job or career?
d. What do I like to do?
e. What are my strength?
f. What is important to me?
2. Exploring your options (options)

interested
a. How do my skills and interests match up
with these occupations?
b. Where are the gaps?
c. What options do I have to gain these
skills or qualify for these occupations?
d. What skills do I need?
e. Where is the work?
3. Making decisions (match)

Education and Development Program(TEDP) that seeks to conceptualize the career
path of a teacher.
NationalCompetency-Based

PERSONALIMPRESSIONS/INSIGHTS:
Career planning is very important not only because of wise decision on choosing profession
but it is a life-long process, it will affect your lifetime profession. I can use career planning for me
to decide carefully and wisely to be able to know what path is suitable on my experience. Also
career planning may help me to decide if it is the right time to make another step towards
developing our abilities and skills in my profession, considering the span of time I teach.
On my insights, it is very important that we must set goals. Career planning is also decision-
making that’s why we must set goals depending on what we want -- interest, skills that may suit
on the career we want to go and if it suits to my strength.
On my teaching profession, this is the career I want to go to, teach and to touch lives. On
the other hands, after I graduate it doesn’t mean that there will be the same goals similar to the
process on receiving my degree. I must remember to set goals the SMART way. A teacher must
develop more for the betterment of his/her teaching profession. For me, I want to set my goals on
receiving the highest degree and given that I want to be a skillfull teacher and also share new
techniques and share them with others in professional fora. But this goal can be possible if plan it
very well, the same thing you must do for us to reach the top of success and future endeavor.

  • 1. DAGDAGAN, Ric Angelo M. SpecialTopic Course (STC) BEEd4A Dr. Elsa Encabo “Journeying the Teacher Profession: Myself and My Career” INTRODUCTION/OVERVIEW: What do you see on the picture? Where do we usually use it? Most of us love to travel or a road trip or to go any of places we want even in the mall, market or park. There are too many possibilities of what you may experience while travelling, the road may have not good condition like being bumpy or muddy or your car is out of gasoline so you need to refill it. If this will happen to you, are you still decided to continue on the place you are planning to go to? This the concept of having a career in teaching or any professions. There are too many factors we may consider why an individual experience obstacles on the race or road he/she is taking to. We may say, because of his/her bad decision-making or she/he was taken by the flow of his/her environment resulting on the career he/she don’t want to go to. Going through on the career you want to go is a decision-making that affects your own life-long career path. That’s why we need to think of the possibilities of undergoing on that career. In this path you where you are now, it’s up to you if you will continue or begin to travel on the other path or racetrack. That’s why wise decisions take long because we plan every detail – it’s a CAREER PLANNING.
  • 2. French word “carriere” which means a road or race course Latin word “cararia” which refers to track for wheeled vehicles. Below is a tabular presentation of the history of career planning; 1950s to 1960s •In the Philippines, parents wanted their children to earn a degree •Being a teacher was highly regarded in the community. 1970s •The National College EntranceExamination (NCEE) was introduced in order to distinguish those who wereeligible to take a degree course fromthose who should take a vocational-technicalcourse. 1990s •During the early 1990s, education, nursing and secretarialcourses were associated with women. •New courses like computer science, computer technology, management information system and web-designing. •The parents obliged their children to take up courses that would provide them jobs. • 7. Growing in Teaching Growing in Teaching Salandanan (2007), emphasized that true teacher always search to learn more in order to further develop their abilities to teach. She cited various ways on how to grow professionally and personally and eventually last in the teaching career. PERSONAL GROWTH PROFESSIONAL GROWTH ď‚· Emulate virtues, traits and qualities of model teachers. ď‚· Attend local and national assemblies. ď‚· Read biographies and autobiographies of esteemed educators. ď‚· Internalize the Code of Ethics and moral standards mandated by the Code of Ethics for Professional Teachers. ď‚· Attend courses/sessions that focus on further development of physical feature, social graces, poise and composure, bearing and the total personality ď‚· Update oneself through enrolling in graduate courses. ď‚· Visit national learning centers. ď‚· Travel scientific, historic and cultural places to gather rich content materials. ď‚· Do extended reading and surf the internet. ď‚· Undertake individual or group researches. ď‚· Attend in-service trainings. ď‚· Conduct dialogues with model teachers. ď‚· Exchange best practices through interschool visits. ď‚· Write formal papers and articles for teacher publications. ď‚· Operate technological equipment in presenting lessons. PERSONALIMPRESSIONS/INSIGHTS: Career planning is very important not only because of wise decision on choosing profession but it is a life-long process, it will affect your lifetime profession. I can use career planning for me to decide carefully and wisely to be able to know what path is suitable on my experience. Also career planning may help me to decide if it is the right time to make another step towards developing our abilities and skills in my profession, considering the span of time I teach. On my insights, it is very important that we must set goals. Career planning is also decision- making that’s why we must set goals depending on what we want -- interest, skills that may suit on the career we want to go and if it suits to my strength. On my teaching profession, this is the career I want to go to, teach and to touch lives. On the other hands, after I graduate it doesn’t mean that there will be the same goals similar to the process on receiving my degree. I must remember to set goals the SMART way. A teacher must develop more for the betterment of his/her teaching profession. For me, I want to set my goals on receiving the highest degree and given that I want to be a skillfull teacher and also share new techniques and share them with others in professional fora. But this goal can be possible if plan it very well, the same thing you must do for us to reach the top of success and future endeavor.
