3. HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE OF CAREER
PLANNING
The idea of career can be traced back in
the beginning of the 20th century. Its
etymology comes from the French word
“carriere” which means a road or a race
course, which turn comes from the Latin
word “cararia” which refers to track for
wheeled vehicles.

15. Working as a teacher has many
challenges in order to address the needs
of our students. The first thing that the
teachers must accept is that there is
always room for improvement. In order
to improve ourselves, we have to
carefully plan our career.
16. Planning a career can be defined as
choosing life’s important paths. It is a
lifelong process, which includes choosing
an occupation, getting a job, growing in
our job, possibly changing careers and
eventually retiring. This may happen
once in our life times but it is more
likely to happen several times as we first
define and then redefine ourselves and
our goals.
17. As a whole, career planning encompasses
establishing career objectives and
determining appropriate educational and
developmental programs to enhance and
enrich the knowledge, skills and
attitudes required to achieve short- or
long term career objectives. A careful
planning is needed when it comes to how
you would earn a living.
18. If planning is not implemented it will
culminate in not only a financial problem
but it might even turn into a physical,
psychological and emotional problems.
The career planning process is comprised
of four steps.
19. 1.SELF
Gathering information about yourself
(Self Assessment)
* Interests, values, roles, skills/aptitudes,
preferred environment, developmental needs, your
realities
2. OPTIONS
* Explore the occupations in which you are
interested
*Get more specific information after you narrow
down your options
20. 3. MATCH
During this phase of the process, you will:
• Identify possible occupations
• Choose both a short term and a long term option
4. ACTION
You will develop the steps you need to take in
order to reach your goal, for example:
• Investigating sources of additional training and
education if needed
• Developing a job search strategy
• Writing your resume
• Preparing for job interviews
23. We say that teaching is a
lifetime profession and
vocation. Hence, career
planning is not just making
plans to obtain your “perfect”
job or career, but to help you
make the many adjustments
there will be along the way as
you learn about you and the
world of teaching.
24. As you can see career
planning is more than just
looking at jobs and positions
and working hard. The reason
most individuals do not turn
their dreams into reality is
because they do not take
these dreams and make them
goals. A goal is a dream with
a deadline. The successful
people set goals; they plan
and follow the plan.
25. Goal setting is a process
and a learned skill with
many parts to it. Simple,
short-term goals may be
done in your head, but
more complex, long term
goals, should be written,
evaluated and monitored
frequently.
26. Harvard's graduate students were asked if they have set
clear, written goals for their futures, as well as if they
have made specific plans to transform their fantasies
into realities.
The result of the study was only 3 percent of the students had
written goals and plans to accomplish them, 13 percent had goals
in their minds but haven't written them anywhere and 84 percent
had no goals at all.
Think for a moment which group you belong to.
27. After 10 years, the same group of students
were interviewed again and the conclusion of
the study was totally astonishing.
The 13 percent of the class who had goals, but did not write
them down, earned twice the amount of the 84 percent who
had no goals.
The 3 percent who had written goals were earning, on
average, 10 times as much as the other 97 percent of the
class combined.
30. A well thought out goal can anticipate barriers that
would stop you. Barriers that come up often cause
an individual to leave behind a goal. Its like running
into a wall, and then you run away from it.
Suppose you want to go from a classroom teacher to
a principal. Before you act and pursue this goal ask
yourself.
“Why do I want to achieve this
goal? Why is this important to me?”
31. Career planning will help
maximize your potential and
satisfaction in your work. It will
give you confidence that you are
in charge of your career and life
and you have the power to
decide, act, and do what you
want to accomplish your goals. In
career planning make an effort
to look for mentors who can
assist you along the way.
