3. Historical Perspective of Career Planning
The idea of career can be traced back in the beginning of
the 20th century.
Its etymology comes from the French word “carrier”
which means a road or a race course, which in turn comes
from the Latin word “ car aria” which refers to track for
wheeled vehicles.
Career choice was almost nonexistent.
4. CAREER
Time devoted for working out of a purposeful life
pattern through the work undertaken by an
individual.
Time extended I essential life since it implies that
career is not something that happens as a result
of one event or choice.
Instead career is a life-long process.
5. WORK
The activity that produce something of value for
oneself or others.
It is not limited to activities for which we are
paid.
It may cover unpaid, volunteer activity.
Work is the way in which the concept of career is
operationally defined.
6. VOCATION – the work that an individual does because of a
calling;
PROFESSION – a career that requires specialized training
and academic preparation;
OCCUPATION – a group of task performed by an individual
in a organization.
JOB – a paid position held by one or more individuals
requiring some related attributes in a specific
organization.
7. Significance of the Planning
Career planning is not just making plans to obtain your “ perfect ” job
or career, but to help you make the many adjustment there will be
along the way as you learn about you and world of teaching.
Career planning is more than just looking at jobs and positions and
working hard.
The reason most individual do not turn their dreams into reality is
because they do not take these dreams and make them goals.
The successful people set goals; they plan and follow the plan.
Goal setting is a process and a learned skill with many parts to it.
Goal setting is as much art as it is science.
The more you understand the process and the more skills you acquire,
the better are the chances in reaching your goal.
8. Remember to set your goals the SMART
way.
Specific (well-defined and detailed)
Measurable (can evaluate progress)
Attainable (within reach)
Realistic (practical)
Time-bound (within a time frame)
Do not abandon a career goal!
