Occupation Vs. Career: What's the Difference?
Occupations, jobs and careers are all terms that people use. They have overlapping meanings but there are key differences among them that can help you plan for each. Understanding the differences allows you to plan for both short- and long-term goals and prepare for changes in both. Understanding each can also help you decide if you focusing on your occupation or your career overall when you are planning your future.
What is an occupation?
An occupation is a group of jobs. You can also consider an occupation as a group of closely related jobs. An occupation differs from a job in that a job is a specific title you hold. For example, you might be a cardiologist for a specific hospital, which is your job. Your job title belongs to a group of closely related jobs, which are all physicians. A physician would be your occupation. Occupation is a broader term than a single job and often carries a wider meaning than one specific job. Other examples of occupations include educators, lawyers and farmers.
What is a career?
A career is a long-term path or plan you have that includes your education, experiences, jobs, occupations and hobbies that encompass you as a professional. You can also consider a career to be the professional experiences you have that lead you from one job to another. Some people also call a career a career path because it often defines how you progress as a professional. There can be multiple careers that start from the same job title. For example, a professional who starts as an apprentice editor may develop skills to become a content editor, a book editor or another job title.
A career can also refer to the known progression of a particular job. For example, educators who start as a teaching assistant may follow a path such as teaching assistant, then a substitute teacher, then a full-time teacher, then master or lead teacher, then assistant principal and end as a principal for their school. Many entry-level positions follow this pattern such as cashiers, data analysts and associate architects. Finally, a career can be how you develop as a professional when you change from one occupation to another, such as moving from teaching to writing.
Working as a teacher has many challenges in order to address the needs of our students. The first thing that the teachers must accept is that there is always room for improvement. In order to improve ourselves, we must carefully plan our career.
Kasunod….. This may happen once in our lifetimes, but it is more likely to happen several times as we first define and then redefine ourselves and our goals.
A careful planning is needed when it comes to how you would earn a living.
If planning is not implemented, it will culminate in not only a financial problem, but it might even turn into a physical, psychological and emotional problems.
The Career Planning Process is comprised of four steps… what are those?
We say that teaching is a lifetime profession and vocation. Hence, Career planning is not just making plan to obtain your PERFECT job or career, but to help you make the many adjustments there will be along the way as you learn about you and the world of teaching
As you can see career planning is more than just looking at jobs and positions and working hard. The reason most individuals do not turn their dreams into reality is,. Because they do not take these dreams and make them goals
….A goal is a dream with a deadline…….
Always remember, listen carefully,
The successful people set goals: they plan and follow the plan.
Simple, short-term goals may be done in your head but more complex …. ADD LEAVE….. I have a goal to graduate from central Luzon state university in May this year…meaning to say, usually accomplished quickly less than 1 year… Example is Buy a new Phone, Write a resume, Go job hunting, now! For the long term-goals, example… I have a goal to graduate from Central Luzon State University in 2027, another example, I have a goal of becoming an elementary Public School Teacher…meaning a long term-goals, should be written, evaluated and monitored frequently….
Simple, short-term goals may be done in your head but more complex, a long term-goals, should be written, evaluated and monitored frequently….
Why set goals? For me, goal setting is a powerful process to clarify what you want…another, for me, goals motivate you to turn your vision into a reality, Goals help us to focus our time and energy on our dreams and objectives. Goals make you accountable… lastly is ,… Goals provide a roadmap to take you from where you are to where you want to be.
Always remember, my dear students, Career Planning will help maximize your potential and satisfaction in your work. It will give you confidence that you are in charge of your career and life, and you have the power to decide, act, and do what you want to accomplish your goals. In career planning make an effort to look for mentors who can assist you along the way…
