HMV In - Store Radio Show Review
1. HVM In-Store Radio Show ReviewKelsey Keighley
Our second radio show we produced was for HMV In-Store Radio.
For this radio show the target audience is quite a wide range because it’s a store, a lot of different
people that like different kinds of music shop in the store. There was no specific age range either so
we so we tried to choose a variety of different songs from film sound tracks and albums. Most songs
were tracks that are quite old such as Jon Travolta ft. Olivia Newton – The Grease Mega mix and
Guns N Roses - Sweet child O Mine but they’re really well known tracks and other were new from
the newest albums out now such as Eminem – Berzerk, this is from his new album.
The technical quality for In-store radio has to be better quality than internet radio shows but not as
high as they would need to be on commercial radio shows, this is because the audience is larger
than internet radio shows but smaller than commercial. On this radio shows I think we handled
faders better than the first radio show we did because we’ve had more practice / feedback and took
that on board. Although there was a point in the show where there was 1 – 2 seconds of dead air
(14:00 – 14:01), this because I didn’t push the faders up / down fast enough. Also while Emma was
speaking I played the song too soon (16:08) but straight away I lowered the volume until she had
finished talking. They’re the only faults I heard throughout the show, so I think we did very well
other than that.
The topics we spoke about in our show were mostly what film’s / album a few tracks were from, but
we also spoke about all the deals going on around the store. We did this because while the audience
are shopping they don’t just have music; they have information about everything in the store such as
deals they didn’t know about.
In my opinion our music and topic choice went extremely well for the radio show we had to do, and I
felt more comfortable after doing the first radio show. Although I do think we need to be extra
careful to ensure there is no dead air for our last radio show.
2. HVM In-Store Radio Show Review
Emma Upton
The second radio show we produced was our HMV in store radio show. Because HMV is an
entertainment shop anyone can shop in there so the audience wouldn’t be as niche as the audience
for our Internet Radio Show. So we had to cater for a wide range of people with different styles and
tastes, and also an audience with no set age range. We thought the best way to cater for the whole
audience would be to play music from films or new albums so it related to what HMV sells.
Again, this show didn’t really have a particular age range because anyone can shop at HMV, so we
made sure the music we played was suitable for all age ranges. For example, most of the audience
would know Skyfall by Adele because of how popular it was, so both younger and older people will
have known that song. Also, older people would probably know Guns N Roses due to their
popularity, and younger people will probably know Eminem and Avicii, so by playing a range of
music from different years I think our song choices were suitable and enjoyable for our audience.
The technical qualities of In Store shows are usually quite high standards because of a larger
audience and there is a bigger budget for the show, so we tried to make our show as professional as
possible. I think we handled the technology quite well as we are getting more used to using the
faders in the studio and being in the studio atmosphere. However we did make a couple of mistakes
during the broadcast, like at (14:00 -14:01) we had a second of dead air when we were changing
from one song to another. And also at (19:08) I was in the middle of talking and Kelsey played the
song we were going to play after I had finished talking too soon, but I think I handled the situation
well because I carried on talking and Kelsey turned the music down so I think we handled the
problem the best we could.
The topics we spoke about were based around films, albums and deals that were in store. For
example after we played the grease mega mix we spoke about the film grease and what film the
next song we were going to play was from. Then after we played Artic Monkeys we spoke about the
deals we had on albums and singles in store. So all the topics we spoke about were related to the
store and what the store sells. I think our topics catered for the audience well, as it provided them
with information about sales in store and also information about the films available too.
We kept our chat sessions quite small because its an in store radio, it didn’t need as much as much
talk as a commercial radio show but more than an internet radio show. So we tried to keep our chat
short and sweet which involves information about the store and its products. We didn’t stutter too
much, I stuttered right at the beginning of the show because I was nervous but it got easier and
better as the show went on.
For our last show I think we can make it so there is no dead air and to try and make sure we don’t
stutter.
