1. In-Store Radio Review- Topshop
Our In-Store radio show went well with very few errors; personally I believe our recording of ‘Retro
Radio’ ran a lot more smoothly since it had less obvious mistakes. Whilst we are very amateur in the
way we present ourselves- particularly myself- we are improving, this is becoming obvious when
listening back on previous recordings.
From a personal prospective I am becoming a lot more confident in the radio station and I am now
able to easily present a show with the help of my partner and limited guidance; we work well
together and have become comfortable with each other. Chat flowed easily between us and we’re
able to pick up from one another if we make mistake; since the show was not scripted it allowed us
to sound more casual and in my opinion allows the audience to believe that we get on well together.
There were a few moment of dead air where neither of us spoke, partly due to the fact we were
laughing, however we quickly picked up from where we left off. Dead air is most obvious at 32
minutes straight after ‘primodona by Marina and the Diamonds’- this is due to the fact somebody
walked in on us whilst we were presenting and we became side tract for a moment.
Since our show was aimed at women who shop in Topshop the music was very ‘indie’ and suited the
demographic in which the store caters for. General chat involved talking about in-store offers and
competitions; whilst the show being unscripted did allow us to sound more natural at times we
became quiet repetitive or we didn’t know how to word what we were saying. For example between
41-42 minutes straight after ‘I will wait by Mumford and Sons’ I completely lost track of what I was
saying and was stumbling over my words, however we were easily able to turn into a joke.
Something both of us struggle with is opening and closing a show. Whilst we did open it quite well
we could have finished off a lot better rather than cutting straight out after the final jingle.
Listening back on the show I now realise we may have not played the jingle enough; the purpose of
the jingle is to allow the audience to know what station they are listening too (and where they are
shopping). Since we did not say much about the songs or artists, it is quite obvious we do not have
much knowledge on the subject; however we did show enthusiasm for it.
Transitioning between songs went particularly well; there were a few song- such as ‘Explosion by Elli
Goulding’ that we should of spoke over the introduction since it was very quiet. There are no
obvious points when I listen back on our recording that we were cut out because we transitioned in
or out too early.
Talking through an introduction is definitely something I would change next time otherwise it sounds
a lot longer than it actually is. I would also make sure we have some sort of idea of who the show is
aimed at and where it will be played so we have more of an idea of what to speak about, that way
we will ‘fit in’ with the audience more.
