1. WHAT WE COULD IMPROVE
I think our radio shows (one music based and one in store) went well; we had little if any
dead air throughout them. In the music based show we spoke mostly without using our
script which gave us much more flexibility with what we could say. This meant our show
sounded more professional and made our speech more fluent and clear. We chose the
songs for our show, by picking ones we liked which fitted our radios theme and hits which
would be memorable to people. The theme we had was “high school memories” so we
picked songs for our high school years (last 5 years) that the target audience who are in the
same age group as us would remember well. We introduced most if not every song, which I
feel was a good touch and we included facts about songs we were playing to inform our
listeners. The facts we got about the songs were gathered from information websites online
(e.g. Wikipedia) however we also used a lot of our own knowledge. We also used our jingles
effectively to reduce dead air and to make our show less repetitive. This meant our show
was more enjoyable to listen to for our audience. We made our jingles on a computer
program called “Reaper”. On this software we messed around with audio altering effects
until we found a jingle we were fond of. We spoke about our radio news topics (Suarez
incident and a film review Iron man 3). I though this went well, we expressed our opinions
about the Suarez incident, informed the listeners with some of the details and gave an
overview of what happened. We researched all the information about the incident by
looking at various newspaper websites online (e.g. the daily mail, the sun). I also feel our
review of Iron man 3 was good; we expressed our honest opinions of the film, spoke in
relation to the film about the lead actor (Robert Downy Jr) and gave some interesting facts
about it. I think our show was effect for our target audience; we picked song which the
listener would not want to stop listening too, so they would stay tuned into our show. The
only aspect of our show which I feel could be improved are the few short times when we
have dead air. This was due to speaking to fast and running out of things to say. So if I could
so the show again we would pace ourselves when speaking.
I also felt our store radio show went well; the store our radio show was based for was HMV.
We didn’t speak about the music like In our other show. Instead we advertised products and
deals that the store was having, like how an official in store radio show would. We spoke in
a salesman persona, as the purpose of the radio show was to sell the stores products. We
also spoke fluently and more importantly clearly in this show, so the audience could
understand what we were saying more clearly. We picked songs which would be likely to get
played in HMV, these are songs which belong to albums that HMV would want to sell. So
through our music choices we were also selling the stores products. One of the ideas of our
show was 10 minute sales. These we designed to make the customer buy products in the
store but stay in their long enough to hear the next offer. We researched on HMV.com to
see what type of sales and offers HMV would have to make our show more realistic. Our
target audience for this show is customers of HMV, who are people who buy DVDs and CDs.
2. During our radio shows we had to use the soundboards to play our music and to turn our
microphones on and off. This was tasking as we have to plan and time everything prior to
making our show. We pre-recorded our jingles as making them on the spot would have to
be difficult. However when it came to news we could improvise about what we were going
to say. Due to my work experience at Salford city radio, I was more useful at the practical
work while Christian was more suited to the theoretical. In conclusion I believe that our
radio shows went well to a good grade standard. We produced to shows, learnt how to
make a radio show ad learned other useful skills to do with radio production.
