Music based programming review

Music Based Programming Review
For my radio shows I choose to do an in store radio show for the Disney store and a classic
rock show. Each was very different from one another due to the fact each one was aimed at
a different target audiences. Throughout this essay I will be reviewing both shows by
explaining what I enjoyed but also what I could improve.
Before we began making our radio shows we had to research the target audience and what
type of songs they would normally play on those types of radio shows. By doing our market
research it helped us plan our radio show and choose what songs to play and how to talk.
For example when we researched the Disney store radio we found out that their target
audience is from 3-10 which then gave us better idea on how to communicate to the target
market. We also found out that the Disney store tend to play songs from famous Disney
films which also promotes the films. The Disney store also end tend to play a lot of
advertisements informing the customers what’s on sale pushing them to buy something
from the store. Compared to a rock show the Disney store radio doesn’t tend to have
people talking due to the fact children will easily get bored and would rather listen to songs
they know then someone talking for ages. I choose songs such as Two worlds by Phil Collins
and Best of both worlds by Hannah Montana which are very famous Disney songs that all
children will know and love.
For my classic rock show I researched other types of rock shows such as Kerrang. Their
target audience ranges from 15-19 year olds and is mainly targeted at teenage boys. This
helped me with my target audience due to the fact my Classic Rock show was going to be
played at dinner time in a college which also has the same age range. However we wanted
our radio show to be aimed at both male and female students therefore we choose songs
that everyone would of heard off such as Thanks for the memories by Fall out Boy and
Thundstruck by ACDC. Both songs are very famous which is why we choose them due to the
fact people will have more off a chance of knowing. When comparing these songs to the
Disney songs you can see a massive difference. The songs chosen for the Disney show are
very easy to learn which is why children enjoy the songs. However when we look at the
sings for the classic rock show such as Thanks for the memories you can see that there’s
more guitars and drums used and more solos which is why its aimed at a older audience.
While picking the songs for both radio shows I wanted to find out information about some
of the songs I had choose. I did this by going on to the famous website ‘Wikipedia’ and
typing in the songs I had chosen to find information about. I found a lot of useful
information about the songs which I had never knew before.
After choosing the songs for both off my radio shows I had to make schedules and scripts for
both shows. I started off by making the script for our rock and Disney show on a programme

called Celtx. The programme was very easy to use and allowed us to set out a script which
was very easy to follow. After setting up our script we made a schedule in the Synergy
broadcast Radio Suit using the option tool then schedule. This only took half an hour due to
the fact we already had the script to guide us. Using the programme Synergy we created
our radio shows. Synergy was very easy to use due to the fact we dragged the songs we
wanted into a section which allowed us to set out our playlist. We also used jingles in our
radio shows to fill gaps after songs. In order to put more of ourselves into the radio shows
we made our own radio jingles.
We made our own jingles using the software reaper. We did this by recording ourselves
saying ‘you’re listening to Chloe and Olivia’s classic rock show’ and then importing the sound
clip into reaper. Also we used music tracks in order to make our jingle more interesting and
more radio like. Due to the fact that our radio show was a rock show I wanted a rock track
over my jingle to tell the audience what type of music they will be listening to. I was very
pleased with the outcome of my jingle due to the fact it fit into my radio show. For my
Disney radio show I also made a jingle due to the fact the Disney store use a lot of their own
jingles which helped me make my own. We recorded Olivia saying ‘you’re listening to
Disney’s in store radio’ and then imported the clip into reaper. The song I used over the
voice clip was a whole new world from the famous Disney film Aladdin. I choose this song
due to the fact people who shop at the Disney store will instantly recognise the song and
what film it’s from. It will also help promote the film itself bringing in more money for the
film.
After making our jingles scripts and schedules we were then ready to make our radio show.
By dragging the songs I needed into the box on the screen I was then able to begin
recording. This was called live assist which is when a DJ (me) creates a radio show using a
computerised system. Me and Olivia each took turns talking into the mic and tried to
improvise instead of reading straight from the script. We did this due to the fact we didn’t
want our radio show to come across as scripted therefore we tried to be chattier by talking
about the songs in turn and giving our own opinions on the song. This makes the audience
warm to the radio show more and makes it more interesting to listen to. This worked well
for our classic rock show unlike our Disney instore radio which didn’t require much talking.
For our classic rock show we used the control board in order to crossfade the songs so that
there was no awkward pauses. Crossfading requires the operator to fade one song out and
another one in which allows us to blend two songs together. We also used crossfading for
out Disney instore radio due to the fact in the Disney store there’s no pauses just constant
music playing and product advertising. We also changed the levels on the songs lowering
the volume of the songs when we were introducing the song and then increasing the
volume when the song was playing.
For our classic rock show we included a lot of jingles and a lot of news bulletins. We also
announced and back announced the songs and gave information about each and every

song. We included information and facts about the songs to make the audience more
interested in the song. For our news bulleting we looked on the rolling stones website for up
and coming events. We included news about the Daft punk song and festivals which are
happening around the country. This worked very well with our radio show because it
allowed people to feel more involved with the radio show itself. Another way we made
people feel more included in the radio show was by creating a competition which they could
enter by tweeting us.
Our Disney radio show was very different from our classical rock show. For our Disney show
we used a lot of bulletins informing the customers about up and coming sales. After certain
songs we announced sales in the store which were related to the son just played e.g. once
we played A whole new world we announced that all Aladdin products were half price. In
our Disney in store radio show we also announced news about up and coming films such as
the new planes movie and the new finding dory movie.
Me and Olivia both took turns throughout both our radio shows to be he presenter and to
also operate the control board. Half way through our classic rock show we stumbled due to
the fact we forgot to blend two songs together which resulted in a long pause which we
didn’t notice for a few seconds. However we quickly resolved the problem by feeling the
silence with our next song which made the radio show flow better. Also at the very end of
our Disney show I started to speak over one of the songs which were playing at the time. It’s
not very noticeable when listening back to it.
Overall I enjoyed my time in the radio room and using the control board. However if I could
back and re do both our radio shows and I would be more confident when speaking into the
MIC and also become more chatty throughout my classical rock show. I would also give
more information about each song but also I would be able to use the software and the
control board more efficiently due to the fact im more use to the technology.
