Evaluation

For my final major project I have decided to create a film trailer, the genre is horror with a
paranormal theme.
The technical quality of my final product
When filming the clips for my project I used a Canon DSLR with the settings on 1080p 24
frames per second. We got all of the footage shot in one session, I’mnot very happy with
the outcome of most of the footage but we did not have enough time to re do everything.
The main negative flaws in all of the footage is the light, we filmed all the clips but 2 in a
house. This meant that there wasn’t much sunlight to brighten up the room, we used the
lights in the house but this made the clips look dull and off colour. We filmed 2 outdoor clips
which are at the start of the trailer, although we were in sunlight the clips still look slightly
off colour but I think this is to do with the settings on the camera.
Whilst filming the footage we had a sound recorder attached to the top of the camera and
used this to record the sound instead of using the sound from the camera. When it came to
the time of placing the sound into the project the audio from the sound recorder and from
the camera sounded exactly the same. I decided to erase the sound recorded audio and just
use the camera audio as it was already in sync and easier to use. I used royalty free music
and sound FX from multiple websites and YouTube. I used them throughout my project, the
music in the background of the clips to get rid of any dead air and create suspense and the
sound FX for the title cards.
When editing my project together I used Adobe Premier Pro and Adobe After Effects. I used
premier pro to put together the whole project but used after effects to create the title
cards. I did this by changing the transform option on the words which made the words fade
in an out when needed. I also used a royalty free video clip for the background of my title
cards to ensure it looked interesting and would fit with my chosen genre. I did not use
anymore videos for the trailer, the rest are all my original footage.
To ensure the trailer looked as good as real trailers I had to research a few similar trailers
and take notice of the layout. At the start of the trailer I added an approval image that is
always at the start of trailers, I then started off with happy, calmmusic to fit with the clips. I
placed plain title card to continue with the happy and calmfeel. I then inserted different
music that is eerie and changed the mood, after this the suspenseful sound FX and title
cards are placed to build up to the dramatic finish.
Production skills I have newly acquired and existing skills I have further developed
During the production of my project I have gained and also progressed. When I started this
project I knew the basic skills when using software such as Adobe after Effects and Premier
Pro. Continuously using this software has helped me understand the a lot more, for example
I have gained skills using Adobe After effects to create my title cards as I have never
produced anything like that before. I have progressed in my Adobe Premier Pro as last year I
produced a music video, so I knew how to place everything in a sequence and edit things.

Doing this has made me become a lot more confident when working with software,
especially these two.
How closely my final major project matches my original intentions
Throughout the project there are quite a few clips that do I match my original intentions,
although my final outcome is not the same as my proposal. This is because some of the
footage that we needed to filmwas slightly unrealistic and we couldn’t achieve what we
wanted to do. For example we planned for ‘Kate’ (Emma Upton) to fall down a few stairs but
because this was a health and safety hazard and she could be hurt we had to re arrange and
plan the story a little different. We also couldn’t get up into the attic so had to remove part
of the story line. This made the storyline less scary/jumpy but we tried my best to create
other little jump scares as we went along. I do think that we could have achieved the
footage we needed if we had given ourselves more time to film. We filmed all of our footage
in one day and couldn’t go back to film more as we had to edit the footage to stay on track
and not fall behind on work. Although the final outcome did not match our original
intentions I am quite happy with the outcome of the footage. I do think the title cards that
we planned to use have made the trailer looks a lot better than if we hadn’t of added them
at all.
Time management and problem solving
To ensure I finish my final major project on time I used a few different ways of time
managing. For example I used Microsoft excel to create a project schedule, I used this by
adding all the tasks I needed to do and gave myself a certain amount of weeks to complete
them. This helped throughout the weeks as when I looked at it I knew exactly what I needed
to complete. If I was slightly falling behind it helped me to manage how many weeks I could
finish it, I would then add an extra week. I also kept a production diary; this helped me in a
very similar way. I would put down what I had completed and what I was going to be doing
the next week. This helped a lot so I could keep track of what needs completing and what I
have completed.
Summary conclusion
If I were to do my project again I would definitely do a lot of things slightly different.
Footage is the main flaw in this project, I would chose a different location to film where it
had a lot more natural sun light or I would hire lightening equipment to ensure the colour
was a good as possible. I would also help the actors go over what they have to do before the
day and learn the script as there was no emotion put into what they were saying. I would
also manage my time slightly different and give myself a few more days to film the footage.
This way if we need to filmanything else or make certain changes we would have enough
time to go back and do it. I do think I gave mys4elf enough time to edit the whole project
together it’s just the music and sound FX that took a while to find as I had to search for

royalty free audio. This was time consuming as I had to fit it in with the pace of the trailer at
different points. Overall I think the project was a success and I managed my time very well, I
got both negative and positive feedback from the audience but the majority agreed it was a
success also.
