Radio programme review
1. Radio Programme Review
At the start of the Assignment we were told that we would be recording a
show for the College Radio Station ‘E6 Radio’ we were told that the Genre of
the show could be anything that we wanted it to be and the show would be
aired throughout the College at a specific time. Once we had the Assignment
we had to find a group of either 2 or 3 people to be the DJ’s on the Show that
we choose to do. In my group there were 3 people, however one person in our
group left the course leaving just 2 people. We then listened to a few radio
stations to try and get ideas for a show one of the stations we listened to was
‘BBC Radio 2 A Year in the Life’ we thought that this would be a similar show to
ours because at the time we were planning on doing a Film Soundtrack Radio
Show up until we decided on a Mix Genre Show because we used a website
called ‘Survey Monkey’ to find out what show people would prefer to listen to
and a Mix Genre show was the most popular. In the Survey that was sent out
we asked people numerous questions about the station to see if it would be a
good idea to use it. After doing primary and secondary research we decided to
change our idea to a mix genre show because it would appeal to more people.
We looked at a website called ‘songfacts’ to find out information about all of
the music we played. The target audience would be 16 – 19 year olds because
that is the main age around college.
Once we had our Music selected and Downloaded we had to start planning the
show. We needed to make schedules and scripts for what we would be playing,
what order the songs would be played and when we would actually speak. Also
we had to create our own News for the show and Jingles which are used to
promote the radio station ‘E6 Radio’ this was quite a fun task to do. We had to
create it using a Programme called ‘Reaper’. Within Reaper we had to make
the Jingles and News sound like they were being made for a real show I
thought this would be difficult as the Jingles are usually created by professional
studio singers or speakers but once I started making the Jingle and News I
found that it was a lot easier than I thought it would be. The way we made the
Jingles and News sound professional was to search through a range of music
that was downloaded for our use and find some Music that we thought would
sound good with our voices and then using the FX tools to manipulate the pitch
2. of voices and sounds etc. Once the Jingles and News had been recorded we
then had to record the show however, before we could record it we first had
to learn how to use all the Radio equipment including; Microphones,
Soundboards, the carts and finally the actually Programme used for Recording.
At first glance at all of the equipment I thought it would be really complicated
and hard to learn but it was actually quite simple once I had been shown how
to use it. The soundboards were used to control the audio levels for the whole
radio show including the microphone levels. The carts were used to place the
Pre-Recorded Jingles and news items, when we needed to use the Jingles and
News we had to simply click on them. The microphone levels were controlled
by the soundboard however we still had to make sure that we were never to
close to the microphone because if we were too close it would be too loud to
hear and wouldn’t sound professional.
After we had finished and recorded our shows and we listened back to it there
were numerous pros and cons to them. When listening to the shows there was
never really any dead air and we looked at the script as a guideline rather than
something we had to read out word for word. The good thing about this was
that we had conversations that were not in the script which made the show
seem more professional and like something you would actually hear on the
Radio. Although there were a lot of pros to the radio show there were also a
few cons to it; because we were new to using the equipment it was hard to
record the show and remember how to change the songs, play the jingles and
on top of that follow the script and speak at the same time this made
recording the show rather hard and at certain points we got confused for
example: at one point in the show we play the song ‘The Drifters – Up On The
Roof’ after the song was played I made a mistake calling ‘The Drifters’ ‘The
Beatles’ Reuben managed to think on is feet and make a Joke out of it which
then again made the show seem unscripted which works in our favour so it
was partly a good thing I made the mistake.
Between the two radio shows we recorded I personally think that the in-store
radio ‘Tesco’ was better. The reason for this was because it was an in store
radio it didn’t require much speech making it easier to focus on the radio
equipment however, a bad thing about the Tesco radio was that Reuben made
3. a mistake just as I did on the Broadcast Radio Show and I spoke too close to
the microphone making it too loud and sounding un professional.
I think both of the shows we recorded would appeal and attract our intended
target audience. The reason I believe it would is because firstly both of our
shows featured easy listening music and had a mix genre, this is a good thing
because the songs will appeal to different people giving us a wider audience. I
personally don’t think our shows were dull with no enthusiasm, the fact we
made mistakes and joked about it added a bit of humour to it which I think
people would enjoy.
If I was to record the radio show again there is numerous things I would do to
improve them. I would remember to keep an eye on the microphone levels on
the soundboards and speak at the right level to avoid distortion. I would also
try and add music in the background when the DJ’s are speaking; I think this
would help make the show sound more professional as they tend to do this on
commercial stations such as Capital.
Overall, I think we did a good job with the two radio shows, although there
were a few minor mistakes in them it was our first attempt using the radio
equipment and recording. Taking that into consideration I believe they turned
out quite well.
