Theory – Audience
Josh Bailey
Audience Profile
• Primary Audience
– Teenagers (Male/15-24) who
enjoy action and superheroes
• Secondary Audience
– Adults (Male/24-44) who grew
up reading the comics and also
might take kids to go see
Audience Profile
• Primary Audience
– Adults (Male&Female/24-44)
Raunchy comedy aimed at adults
with the right jokes for that
demographic
• Secondary Audience
– Teenagers (Male&Female/15-24)
A show that is obviously not
meant for this age group but is still
watched nonetheless
Audience Profile
• Primary Audience
– Children (Male&Female/0-14)
That like to watch animated comedy
films with an easy-to-follow story
• Secondary Audience
– Teenagers and Adults
(Male&Female/15-44)
who enjoys video games and watches
the movie with their children
Hypodermic Needle
• Definition
– Where an audience is affected by the media in use
and they believe what is being told
• Example
– During the second world war, Germany produced
many black and white films to show their power
to their enemies with the intention making them
fear the Nazis. The U.S, in return used the movie
industry to produce a negative image of Germany.
Uses and Gratifications Information
Information – My phone has installed, a news
app that shows me all the latest news and gives
me the option to show what aspect of the news
I want pinned to see first. It also alerts me of
breaking news.
Media also lets the audience learn in general, by
stating something the audience might not know,
they can go research it and educate themselves.
Uses and Gratifications Personal Identity
Personal identity – In some cases I can see that
some characters in media and I share common
traits. So seeing a character I relate in a film, in a
difficult situation makes me wonder what I
would do in those circumstances.
Depending on what the media contains and the
attitude it expels, it can have an impact on the
audiences behaviour in real life.
Uses and Gratifications Integration and
Social Interaction
Integration and social interaction – With access
to the media you enjoy. You can instantly relate
to the people, thus the fan base that also enjoy
said film or game. This kind of acceptance
highlights the good side of media and brings
people together.
Social media allows people from all around the
world to be connected at all times.
Uses and Gratifications Entertainment
Entertainment – Watching a film brings you out of
the real world and into an experience with a true
narrative other than being sat down and bored. This
escapism can help people with life problems and
make them forget things they wanted forgetting.
Using media to relax is universal. Whether people
prefer music, film, books, video games. People use
it to escape.
Consumer Generated Content
• Example
– When people post things on social media, such as
people posting an image on Instagram.
• What are the advantages to media producers?
– Their media grows and expands its customer base,
they become popular and start making money off
what they create/upload
• Why would the audience generate content?
– They have potential to become famous via the
content they share and make a living out of that
– Share their opinion and give insights of their life.
