The document discusses several theories related to audiences and media consumption, including:
1) The hypodermic needle theory which suggests that consumers wholly accept the information that is given to them in media, as exemplified by Orson Welles' 1938 radio broadcast causing mass panic.
2) Uses and gratifications theory which posits that people seek out specific media to fulfill personal needs related to information, identity, social interaction, and entertainment.
3) Consumer generated content which media producers benefit from as it is uploaded to their infrastructure at no cost to them, while audiences generate content to share things they find interesting or funny.
2. Audience Profile
• Primary Audience
The primary audience are the people that the
add is supposed to specifically appeal to.
• Secondary Audience
• The secondary audience are the second most
important consumer audience. The second
customer base may be for example a parent
that buys a children's product although the ad
was mainly targeting the child.
3. Hypodermic Needle
• Definition
The hypodermic needle theory is where the consumer
wholly accept the information that is given to them.
• Example
Theory was illustrated on October 30, 1938 when Orson
Welles and the newly formed Mercury Theater group
broadcasted their radio edition of H.G. Wells' "War of the
Worlds." ... The nation was in a state of chaos, and this
broadcast was the cause of it.
4. Uses and Gratifications Information
The information that I receive mainly comes
from social media sites although I will then
research this information further by using
google search engine where I can receive
multiple sources on that certain subject.
5. Uses and Gratifications Personal
Identity
I express my personal identity through images or
videos I share of myself on social media sites
and also through the content I share so
someone who follows me and keeps up to date
on my feed get a small idea of what I am like as
a person. People who are constantly up to date
with someone's feed, mainly public figures, may
develop certain behavioural traits or influenced
opinions.
6. Uses and Gratifications Integration and
Social Interaction
People can join certain groups or forums that are
based around that persons interests in which you
can meet new people and identify with others.
Personally I don’t use these as I only use sites such
as Facebook and snapchat to trade messages and
share funny images or videos. People can use social
media for a sense of belonging and use topics for
social interaction but some may end up replacing
real life companionship with companionship via
social media.
7. Uses and Gratifications Entertainment
When it comes to escapism I personally like
getting lost in a good film or discovering and
listening to music on media sites such as Netflix
and Spotify in which you can add friends via
facebook and share eachothers playlists and
songs. Sites like these are good for relaxation
and enjoyment.
8. Consumer Generated Content
• Example
• Youtube
• Facebook
• What are the advantages to media producers?
• It does not cost the media producers to generate
content but is uploaded on their infrastructure.
• Why would the audience generate content?
• People like to share the things that they are interested
in or find funny.
