Theory- Audience
James Pateman
Audience Profile
• Primary Audience
– Teenagers (15-24),
predominantly male but many
female also, teens engage
because they feel some level of
relateability, it was also one of
the first teen dramas to dive
into the bigger issues
teenagers face.
Secondary Audience
– Young adults (25-44), mostly
women with some men taking
interest, they maybe watching
to get a view of how their kids
act or just what teenagers in
general get up to and what
lifestyles they lead.
Audience Profile
• Primary Audience
– Teenagers (15-24)
would be the main
audience, typically men
that like sci-fi dramas.
• Secondary Audience
– Young adults (25-44)
would be an equally as
good main audience
both men and women
would typically watch it.
Audience Profile
• Primary Audience
– Teenagers (15-24),
fairly evenly based on
gender but typically
girls would watch it.
• Secondary Audience
– Young adults (25-44),
would watch it,
typically male.
Hypodermic Needle
• Definition
– Hypodermic needle is where the media ‘injects’
certain information which the audience accepts
with no hesitation.
• Example
– Say if a muslim or other minority stab someone
newspapers and other forms of media brand them
as a ‘terrorist’ whereas if a white person stabbed
someone it is simply classed as a stabbing.
Uses and Gratifications Information
We use media in
many different ways
and interpretations
but we mostly use it
to learn something,
ie. How to make a
cake, check our
health, keep upto
date on global news,
or keeping up with
the latest trends.
Uses and Gratifications Personal
Identity
• Another way we
use media is to
engage with
people who share
the same views or
ideals as you do,
or who you
personally feel
attached or
similar to ie a
celebrity,
character, public
figure or actor/ess
Uses and Gratifications Integration and
Social Interaction
• Yet another way
we use media is by
interacting social
on different media
sites, we may do
this via twitter,
forum, Q&A.
Uses and Gratifications Entertainment
• The main use of media
is entertainment, we
take pleasure
consuming and
enjoying media in a
variety of different
ways.
Consumer Generated Content
• Example
– YouTube is a prime example of user generated content as it
doesn’t actually create the content themselves users create it.
• What are the advantages to media producers?
– They get free content for their site made by users, they also do
not have to promote the content as individual users do it
themselves, all while making money off the free content they
are given via ad revenue
• Why would the audience generate content?
• The audience generate their own content as a way of
expressing themselves through the media platforms
available to them such as Instagram, Pinterest, Tumblr and
YouTube. They also may develop content because if you
have a certain amount of view or subscribers you get a
small percentage of the ad revenue given to youtube by
company promoters.
