Assure Method
Lesson Chosen: 1-Teaching the months of the year to a 1st
grade class, Special education, 10 boys, 7
girls, 70% white 20% African-American and 10% Hispanic.7 students in the class have mild to severe
ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder).
A- Analyze Learners
This lesson will focus on teaching the months of the year to a 1st
grade special education class. There are
10 boys and 7 girls. They are 70% white, 20% African American, 10% Hispanic and 7 students have mild
to severe ADHD. This group of students is very unique and will require a specific set of accommodations
to meet their needs such as scaffolding and hands on activities to keep their attention.
S- State Objectives
The 17 first grade students will recite and list in order all 12 months of the year by sorting notecards,
singing songs, and making their own calendar by the end of the unit with 70% accuracy.
S- Select methods, Media, and Materials
Method- Students will be put into groups to work in each of the three different centers: sorting
notecards, singing songs, and making their own calendar
Media- Students can use the internet to do guided research for different songs created to help in the
memorization of the months or they can create their own. They can then create a podcast of their
chosen song to be placed on the classroom computers.
Materials- Students will use cardstock, markers and other art materials to create their own calendars.
They will need computers and a microphone/headphones to create their podcast.
U- Utilize Media and Materials
Students can use all materials available in the classroom in aid them in the overall unit, such as
computers, art supplies, CD player, etc.
2. R- Require Learner Participation
Students will share their newly created calendars with the class and can also share their song if they
would like. The teacher will keep the students engaged by asking questions and prompting their
learning.
E- Evaluate and Revise
Each student will come up to the smart board where the 12 months will be listed in random order. THEY
will then place each month in the correct spot to display the 12 months of the year in the correct order.
They may use their song to assist them along with the process.
