The ASSURE Method
1-Teaching the months of the year to a 1st grade class, Special ed, 10 boys, 7 girls, 70% white
20% African-American and 10% Latino.7 students in the class have mild to severe ADHD
(attention deficit hyperactivity disorder).
A – Analyze Learners
Learners are in the first grade with some special education needs. Ten of them are boys
while seven are girls. The majority of learners are white, 20% are African American, and 10%
are Latino. Seven students have ADHD.
S – State Objective
Learners will be able to recite the months of the year with 100 percent accuracy in a week
by either singing, writing, or putting notecards in order
S – Select Methods/Media/Material
o Calendar
o Song (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5enDRrWyXaw)
o Notecards with the months and weather of the months on them
o Lyrics
o Worksheets with months on them
U – Utilize Materials
Day one, use the song and have the kids sing it. Song will be written on the board and
handouts of the lyrics will be passed out. They will sing the song every morning for a week.
Day two, the students will write out the words three times.
Day Three and four, the students will order the notecards until they get it right.
Day five, the students will say/place the months in order.
R – Require Learner Participation
Ask learners if they feel they understand it better when it is in song or puzzle versus
memorizing terms. Ask learners if singing keeps them interested.
E – Evaluate and Revise
Students learned better with a catchy song instead of memorizing terms and repeating
them. Students can now recite the month of the year with 100 percent accuracy.
