grade. Out of the seventeen students, there are 10
boys and 7 girls. 70% of the students are white, 20% are African-American, and 10% are
Hispanic. 7 out of the 17 students have mild to severe ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity
disorder).
State objectives
The seventeen students in first grade will 90% accurately arrange the months of the year in
correct order from January to December. The students will 90% accurately arrange the months of
the year when asked to create a calendar of their own (from memory) at the end of the lesson.
Students will do this through practicing with song, diagrams, pictures, and group activities.
Select instructional methods, media, and materials
-Month of the year song/video on a computer (with headphones): to help students arrange the
months of the year in correct order from January to February.
-Poster
-Pinterest
-SMART Board
-Voki
Utilize media and materials
The first day students will be introduced to the months of the year through a month of the year
song provided by the teacher. The second day, students will create a class calendar using poster
boards. The third day is game day. Everyone in the class must participate in a game where the
class must get in correct order by the month of their birthdays. The fourth day students will
match pictures from each month of the year to one of the four seasons using an interactive game
on SMART Board. The fifth and final day students will be asked to create a calendar of their
own using construction paper, scissors, and markers (from memory). The months must be in
correct order from January to December. A voki at the beginning of this day saying the months
of the year will be provided.
2. Require learner participation
-The first day students will get introduced to the months of the year by individually learning a
month of the year song on a computer that goes along with a video. The month of the year song
helps students organize the months of the year in correct order from January to December. The
song/video will be pre-set on the computer each student is using.
-The second day will start by singing the month of the year song from the previous day. This day
the students are going to create a class calendar using poster boards that they themselves make.
Each person is given one month to make a poster about (some groups will have 2 people in
them).
-The third day will start again by singing the month of the year song. The activity this day is a
game found using Pinterest. The students must get into a line going around the room according
to the order of their birthdays. Anytime the students leave for recess, lunch, bathroom breaks,
etc. traveling must be in this line.
-The fourth day again starts with the month of the year song. This day the students get into small
groups and are matching real life pictures from the different months to the 4 seasons of the year.
Each picture is titled “January”, “February”, “March”, etc. and must be put into correct order
with its season. This is an interactive SMART Board game.
-The fifth day again starts with the month of the year song. Then a special Voki comes on to tell
them the correct order of the months of the year one last time. This day the students are
evaluated on what they know by asking them to cut & paste the title of each month, in order, on a
calendar they create with construction paper, scissors, and glue. The only requirement is that the
months be in correct order from January to December.
Evaluate and revise
Students will be assessed at the end of the lesson by asking them to create a calendar of their
own from memory by cutting and pasting the title of each month to their calendar they make.
The only requirement is that the months must be in correct order from January to December.
