1. ASSURE Method
A- Analyze Learners
Teaching the months of the years to a 1st grade class, Special
education, 10 boys, 7 girls, 70% white 20% African-American and 10%
Hispanic. Seven students in the class have mild to severe ADHD
(Attention Deficit Hyper Disorder).
S- State Objectives
My first grade class,will recite the months of the year to me, organize
flash card (note cards) of the months in order with the class and one-on-one,
be tested on spelling.
After learning songs, creating flashcards (writing month & drawing
pictures with coordinating colors to remember the month by) learning how
to spell each month (worksheets & songs), doing activities (worksheets
putting the months in order), practicing flashcards in groups, learning
holidays and traditions of each month and also learning weather conditions
for the month,my class will know the months of year with 100% accuracy
after 2 weeks of in class work.
S- Select Methods, Media and Methods
I will teach the 12 months of the year to my students using;
calendars, songs (youtube), pictures, student made individual
flashcards, worksheets and class discussion. I will create and use a
calendar interactive bulletin board with all of the student and teachers
birthday's.

U- Utilize Media and Materials
I will begin the lesson by showing the students the 12 months of the
year from various calendars to start off the lesson. We will then discuss the
weather patterns for that month, and any holidays or traditions that fall
during the month. While discussing the weather and holidays I will include
pictures and activities for each month. In order to memorize the months we
will learn a song together to help the students memorize the song. While
singing the song I will point to the months from the class bulletin board to
help with the chronological order. I will pass out 12 flash cards with the
months previously written and have the students decorate them with
pictures and colors to help memorize the order and spelling of the month.
The students will have group time to work on the flash cards that they
made.
R- Require Learner Participation
The students will be required to participation in the class discussions
and singing of the song. Each student will be responsible for their flash
cards, studying them and bringing them back to school the following day.
Each student will take turns coming to my desk and saying the months and
also placing their flash cards in order.
E- Evaluate and Revise
During the class activities each day I will have the class work on
activity worksheets and on their flashcards in groups while I have students
come to my desk and practice spelling and saying the months in order. I
will collect the notecards grade them and laminate them for the students to
3. use as flashcards. I will evaluate the students on the spelling at the end of
the two weeks with a spelling test.
