Audience profile
1. 4) Who would be the audience for your media product?
Throughout the production of my magazine I had the intention of aiming my project at a more youthful
audience, particularly between 13 and 25 and this age range is within the middle class category in the
social class structure. Intensive research has been invested in trying to derive the most suitable
audience for my hip hop magazine. I found that the majority of people that listen to hip hop consist of
males and so this is who I intend to target with my magazine. However, I will still be focusing on the
proportion of females that listen to and enjoy reading about hip hop. Research shows that
approximately 75% of males listen to hip hop implying that the other 25% who listen to hip hop consist
of the female gender. So I will be focusing on satisfying both of their needs but my main goal will be to
look at how to keep the male population who listen to hip hop content with my magazine.
In terms of the ethnic groups I'm aiming to target my audience at, there is a wide variety of people
from different ethnic backgrounds who listen to hip hop. So I've adapted my magazine to suit the
needs and interests of people from various ethnic backgrounds but I'm hoping to mainly appeal to
those of an African-American origin as hip hop was established in countries in those areas and so
these people will feel that they can relate to this genre of music more so than others.
People from all the different social classes listen to hip hop music however those from the lower and
middle class feel that they can relate to the music genre more than people from the higher class as
many hip hop artists came from poor backgrounds and they relate their struggle to fame through their
music. I have then adapted my magazine content so that those of the lower classes can understand
and relate to it more making it a more enjoyable experience for them when reading the magazine. On
the other hand, there are also quite a few hip hop artists and songs that talk about money, power and
fame which would appeal to the higher class so there is a fairly large proportion of upper class who
listen to hip hop as well. I will be mainly looking to aim my magazine at a lower class audience but I
would also like to keep the upper class captivated as well to an extent.

The audience would be fairly well educated as they would need to be able to understand the lyrics in
hip hop songs and most of them would most likely be in college or some form of education as the
majority of people that listen to and read about hip hop are students within the teenage age range.
The lifestyle of my target audience would be fairly normal as they are of school age or maybe just a
bit older. Those that are in their early twenties would most probably be in employment and so would
be looking for some form of leisure activity e.g. reading hip hop magazines.
The purchasing habits of the audience would be well related to the hip hop magazines as they would
have similar taste to the artists featured in the magazine. For example, if an artist is wearing chains,
snapbacks and urban style clothing, it is likely that the audience would aim to impersonate these
ideas.
