This document discusses the importance of font, color, and design elements in magazine layout. The ”Century font is more of an old fashioned font whereas the
“Century Gothic” is more modern. Despite this the Century font is
easier to read when in small than the Century Gothic is due to the
fact that Century Gothic is so plain.

This is an example of a more classical font which looks elegant and old fashioned.This would indicate a more
formal magazine aimed towards an older audience therefore it wouldn't suit our magazine double page spread
as we want our magazine to be aimed towards a teenage audience and so a modern font would work better.
Also a problem with this font is that it is hard to read when in small and we want the text to be clear and
informative as that is the norm forTV listing pages.

This type of font (“Comic Sans”) is a lot more childish and informal, therefore it would not be the best font to use if
we want to attract our primary and secondary audience who are all over the age of 13. Also this font suggests a
light hearted tone where as our topic is drinking and so the font wouldn’t match the context of the article.

This isa more appropriate example of a font we would use (“Calbri”).This would be more suited to our magazine as
it is sophisticated and simple while remaining modern and clear which would attract the more mature audience we
are trying to appeal to.
4. Display fonts
Display fonts are used to grab the audiences attention and so they should only be used for the title and
main cover line as they are the most important things that need to be advertised, this is a big code and
convention for every magazine.This is also done for emphasis and to make the spread seem less dull.
In the example above in one “Bodoni MT Black” is used and this would be a good display font to use as it is
thick and bold in comparison to the one below it written in “Agency FB” which would barely stand out
against the other fonts.

5. Size
Size is an important thing to get right in the magazine because different things need to
attract more attention and so more important things need to be made to be bigger and
bolder. For example it is a code and convention that the masthead or the title of the page
is bigger than the writings of articles and cover lines.This is done because some things are
more important such as the brand logo, titles and quotes. Also by doing this the magazine
seems less Samish and dull and as a result attracts a lot more attention.

6. Colour schemes
Light colours such as pinks and whites are seen as more girly and childish,
also they connote light hearted themes. For these reasons it would be best
for us to not use these colours in out magazine DPS as we want a more
mature looking page as the article itself is about the documentary which
involves serious themes.
Dark colours such as blacks and blues have a much ore dramatic effect.
They also allow mastheads and cover lines, which should be in bright
and light colours, to stand out and attract more attention.The dark
colours would be good to use for our magazine because they appear to
be more mature and attract older audiences.
7. Complimentary colours
It is also important to make sure that all the colours in the
magazine compliment each other and do not clash.This is
important as a well thought out colour scheme will make the
magazine a lot clearer, easier to read and attractive.
Some colours such as this represent
cold and mellow tones and would be
good to use for a more middle age
audience, probably female.
Some colours are hot and energetic
and provoke thoughts of action and
liveliness, therefore ae often used in
children's magazines for males.
8. Colours for genres
Darker colours (brown, black, navy) are used here.This could be because
doctor who (the show the DPS is advertising) is for a more mature audience
and has a lot more of a drama story line therefore the colours would be a bit
more darker and natural than something like an action show.
Lighter and more unnatural colours are used here such as greens, reds and
pinks.These colours are all bright and different which connotes a more child
like and playful tone, which is good as the DPS is advertising children tv
programmes such asTracy Beaker and the Gruffalo.The bright colour are
defiantly more suited towards a audience around the aged under 13 and so I
think bright colours should be avoided in my double page spread (apart from to
catch attention in titles) as they don’t appeal to my target audience.
9. Choices

HourThis is a combination of colours that would not work for my magazine and so I will not be doing this.The brown
text box is dull, not attractive and isn’t a complimentary colour to many colours and so finding a colour to go over
it for the title would be hard, as would finding somewhere on the page to put it on top of. Also the black isn’t a
very good colour to use for a masthead as it is dark and therefore doesn’t attract any attentions, however the
black does make the title look very clear and bold which is good. Overall these colours do not associate anything
to do with my topic as they are dark, dull and not lively which aren't traits commonly associated with drinking,
for these reasons I will not be using these colours.

HourThis is more the type of combination and colours I will be using in my double page spread.These colours are loud
and energetic which can connote feeling people feel while drunk and so the tone of the page will be accurate. Also
these colours are used for younger audiences (teenagers) as they are dramatic and loud however they're not to
young (10-) because they're still mature and not to light, this works well with my target audience.The colours
compliment each other well and the title is very easy and clear to read while remaining eye catching which is what
I need the title to do.
