2. Connotations
-The background has graffiti, this is connoting streets
and hip hop also it can be associated with creativity
-The colour scheme are bright and bold colours (red
and black), this is bold and are colours that some
people would see and think about this genre when
they see them
-The big gold chain can be associated and tie in with
rap and hip hop culture which is the type of music
genre Dizzee Rascal is part of
-By putting the main cover line in slanted bold writing
we think that he is different and this suggests that he
is edgy and a rule breaker
-Dizzee Rascal is an icon for hip hop so people know
from the front cover that it is a hip hop magazine, this
is why NME used him as the main cover photo
-The magazine has put Dizzee Rascals head in the top
left hand central corner (rule of thirds) this is grabbing
the readers attention
3. Connotations
-At the top of the page is a jet black text box with the name of the
magazine (NME) in bright red which makes it stand out and attention
grabbing. Also this links in with the colour scheme of the front cover.
These colour schemes will be attracting a young audience who are
interested in loud and heavy music because both of these colours are
vibrant and loud colours.
-Also on the black text back at the top the title “contents” is written in
big white letters. This makes the title clear and eye catching, also it fits in
the with rest of the writing on the page.
-Almost in the centre of the contents page is a photo of a girl by a bus.
The bus is representing the article well as it talks about going on tour
which is what most people would associate a bus with. The girl in the
photo is wearing quite dark clothes which is ties in with the rest of the
colour scheme and also helps people associate her to a genre of music
(rap/ rock) which is the tone that NME is trying to give out. The girl is
towards the right central line of the photo and the bus is on the left
central line which makes both the girl and the bus equally attention
grabbing which shows that the editors have thought about rule of thirds.
-Along the side of the contents page there are article names written in
red with the page number in black on top of a white background. The
white background is making the words on top of it stand out and legible.
The red and black colours go with the NME iconic style and colour
scheme.
-The titles of certain things on the page e.g. “Live!”, “news” and “touring
special” are all written in white, big and bold letters and on top of a
black background. The black background is connoting a dark and loud
scene which is the general tone of the magazine, also the black
4. Connotations
-This is a double cover spread of the NME magazine. The main colour I
can see on the photo page is red and a multi coloured graffiti wall
behind him, these colours connote a lively and loud tone which is the
kind of feel NME is trying to give off. Also the graffiti is representing to
some people that the genre of the magazine and article is hip-hop/rap
because people associate the graffiti with that.
-The main model of the photo page is in the very centre of the page,
this shows that the photographer and magazine editor has thought
about rule of thirds because the model is in the very middle which
grabs readers attention. Overall the model is representing and giving
off a loud and vibrant tone, he is doing this through his costume, pose
and facial expression.
-This outfit is edgy and casual which is what people would associate
with hip-hop and rap music. The rappers jacket is bright red and shiny
which fits into the NME colour scheme and also the colour red
connotes to readers that he is loud and confident with himself.
-The title “from tags to riches” is written in bold black writing and it
takes up almost half of the right page. This is very eye catching and
makes the reader want to know more. Underneath the title there is
an off white background with faded graffiti underneath. This is giving
off a streets and edgy tone however it is making it still legible to
readers.
-At the bottom of the right page is a old school radio and empty
bottles of beers. This is sort of telling a story about what the article
will be about without revealing too much. The empty and knocked
over bottle of beers is a intriguing and will make readers want to read
the article.
