Fonts and colours
1.
2. MEANING BEHIND FONTS
Font FontArial Black
This font is bold with thick
lettering and harsh edges.
Gives a standard appearance it
would be used for a masthead
because it would stand out
clearly and be eye-catching for
the audience.
Arial Rounded MT Bold
This font has a softer
appearance with the use of the
rounded edges, it would be
less effective as a masthead,
however it would be used in a
genre such as Pop.
3. The use of scripted fonts such as these, convey an elegant and
sophisticated appearance to a magazine. These fonts are only suitable to
specific genres e.g. Classical, Jazz. The text is also difficult to read and
isn't bold so for a masthead wouldn’t be as clear.
4. Bold fonts (such as the ones bellow) are use for mastheads and main
cover lines for magazines as they stand out and clear for the audience to
read. Different fonts will be used for other cover lines, but the main cover
line will be in a bold text to show its importance.
5. Hand lettering fonts convey a
personal and human touch to a
magazine. They would be used
most likely in editorial letters to
convey a personal aspect to the
writing or in an advise piece or
letter from a reader being
included in the magazine.
However, different styles of
hand writing fonts can only be
used for specific genres. For
example a joined up font would
be more appropriate for a
magazine with an old female
audience, where as a printed
lettering would be more suitable
for a younger audience.

6. SIZE
The size of a font is very important, especially for the
masthead. The text needs to be large and bold for
the audience to be able to read it. If the text is small
it wont give the right impact.

7. COLOUR
The colour scheme of a magazine allows you to
indicate the genre, the age range of the
audience and the gender the magazine is
aimed at.
Calm, relaxing,
cool
Harmonious
Danger, edgy,
rebellious
Different colours will convey different meanings
bellow are examples of the connotations that
some colours can have.
8. Teen
Pop
ROCK NATION
When choosing the colour scheme for a magazine the colours used must match the genre and target audience of the magazine that is being
created. For a Pop magazine you would want to use bright eye-catching colours and due to the fact the target audience is mainly teenaged
girls pinks and purples are used. On the flip side Rock magazines with use dark and grungy colours to match the style of the music and the
people the magazine is targeted to.

9. Possible colour
schemes and fonts
for my magazine
Bebas Neue
Code
Porter
The gold, black and white would
work effectively together as it
would give and expensive and
flashy appearance to the
magazine, which matches with
how the R&B genre is based a
lot around material things.
The simple and classy black,
white and grey colour scheme
could work well with the
magazine as it would work well
with images within the
magazine and of colours would
work well, without contrasting
them.
Black and white are two
colours that are simple and
easy to work with, adding red
to that will add a stronger
sense of colour that will grab
the readers attention. There
are magazines that use this
colour scheme already,
however it would be interesting
to see what alternative looks I
could create using these
colours,
This colour scheme could
create a new and unique look,
the brighter colours would
attract the readers attention
and stand out against other
magazines.
