How old are you?
12-16yr
17-20yr

For my pilot questions I asked people that were in the
same year as me so the results for this are not shocking,
for my actual questionnaire I aim to ask people from a
range of different ages. This will allow me to understand
what all ages want not just the younger people. This
means that my magazine will be appealing to all ages, not
just 17 year olds. Also as the gaps between the ages are
different amounts I could possibly add a box to fill out the
answer or ask if they’re in their 20s, 30s and so on.

Have you ever read a
regional magazine?
Yes
No
Question 2
The second question I asked was if they had ever read a
regional magazine, as regional magazine target audiences
tend to be older than the people I asked the results were not
too bad, in my final questionnaire I’ll expect more people to
answer yes as I’ll be asking a wider range of people. As 4/10
people said they had never read a regional magazine this
could possibly mean that they don’t know about any regional
magazine in their area so possibly advertising will be very
important in getting my magazine seen by people. Also I feel
that the regional magazine’s that are in circulation now aren’t
really appealing to most teenagers as they are on things such
as gardening or things to do with the kids, something that we
could change in our magazine and add more things appealing
to older teenagers

In a women's magazine,
what subgenre would
you prefer to read?
Places to go
Lifestyle
Food
Music
Fashion
Beauty
Other
The third question I asked was ‘in a women’s magazine,
what subgenre would you prefer to read’ this was a
multiple choice question but out of the 18 responses
‘places to go’ was picked 6 times, this shows that people
would prefer to read a regional magazine about women
and the other main genre would be places to visit around
Leicester such as shops and restaurants. The second most
common was fashion, this would be expected as I asked 10
female 16-18 year olds, if I was to ask older people the
answer may differ, To improve on this question I could
maybe not make it multiple choice to really narrow down
what people want.

What's the maximum
you would pay for a
women's regional
magazine?
Free
£1-1.99
£2-2.99
£3-3.99
I asked this question with the hope of finding out the
maximum people would pay for a regional magazine,
with these responses I am able to collate the results and
see that people are mostly willing to pay £2 for a
women’s regional magazine. I did this question as a free
or other selection but I feel that I should have done
multiple choice as I feel that people could write anything
so the multiple choice gives a direction towards the
price. As I asked younger people who don’t have much
money, or have money but are more likely to spend it on
something else so by asking older people I’d expect
maybe a higher average number.

What would you be most
interested in to have on a
double page spread?
Food Article
Fashion Article
Beauty Article
other
The fifth question I asked was to find out what was the
preferable article for the double page spread. I found
out that 5/10 people asked would prefer to read a
fashion article, this would be common in the age group
that I asked, but possibly older people may want
something different so in my final questionnaire when I
ask a wider range of ages I should add more choices
such as gardening, this will mean people have more
options to choose from. I asked this question to find
out what people prefer to read so this question will
help me decide what I should do my main focus on.

What do you prefer?
More images to
text
less images
more text
Equal amounts
of text to
images
This question is really helpful for me as I was able to see if people
preferred lots of text or little chunks and more images. My results were
not shocking and went along with my prediction, 9/10 people prefer to
read less and have more images on the page. This could be because of 2
reason, the first people at 16-18 stereotypically don’t like reading too
much so having massive bits of text would put them off. Or it could be
because this ages range are visual learners and prefer looking at pictures
to understand something. Having lots of pictures in common in regional
magazine’s so in my magazine I will add more pictures and break up the
text so they don’t have too much to read. If I asked an older audience
they may argue that they like more text as they like to read, but it’s about
getting the balance to please both old and young people. To improve on
this question I could have added possible examples so they could see
what I meant by more images or more text.

Do you think the use of
colour is effective in a
women's magazine?
Yes
No
The seventh question I asked was about the effectiveness of
colour. 10/10 people said colour was effective in a women’s
magazine, however I think that the question needed more of
an explanation for example examples or if ticked yes then
they had to explain why or give examples. So in my final
questionnaire I will give people more of an idea as to what I
meant and give them the option to say why or give
examples. This question is important because I wanted to
know if the colour used has an effect on the audience, now
that I know it does it means I will maybe ask what colour
scheme people would want so it’s more appealing to them.

What gender would
you like the model on
the front to be?
Female
Male
The eighth question I asked was what gender they would like the
person on the front cover to be, 10/10 women said that they would
prefer it to be a women on the cover, this wasn’t surprising as most
women magazine’s star a female on the front very rare it is to have a
male on the cover. This isn’t because they’re sexist it is because it’s a
women’s magazine, and the articles are for women and give advice
for women so having a male on the cover wouldn’t match the theme
that it’s a women’s magazine. However I don’t full agree that the
cover person has to be female because we live in a day and age
where it’s okay for men to wear makeup and want to look nice.

Where do you get most of
your Celebrity gossip or
information from?
Facebook
Twitter
Instagram
This question allowed me to find out where people get their news from. This was a multiple
choice question which allowed them to answer as many times as they wanted, this was
effective as it allowed me to find out the top 3 places people go to find out about things.
9/25 answers said that they go to Facebook or Instagram to find out their information,
followed by 5 answers for Twitter, this would not be shocking as the ages I asked are more
likely to go online to get information rather than reading a newspaper. This information
allows me to understand that people use social media more than they use a paper copy this
may be because of the price or the fact that nearly everyone in their teens is on social media
so it’s easier to get it from there. This allows me to understand that to make my magazine
more appealing to the younger generation having links to social media pages will mean the
magazine gets a bigger following. For my final questionnaire I will be asking older people so
I’d expect to see more newspapers and magazines that when I asked only people of my age
group. Overall this question was effective as I found out the most common social media
forums for people to find out things but would be better if I asked a wider target audience
age

Would you prefer a
subscription service,
buying the magazine…
Subscription
(annualy)
Single purchase
The last question I asked was how they’d prefer to pay for the
magazine, whether it was annually and have It delivered or just buy it
when they want it. The results were 10/10 people saying they’d prefer
to singly purchase the magazine this may be because the people I
asked wouldn’t be working full-time and may not have lots of money
so when they want to buy the magazine they can. I also thought that
maybe if I asked a wider target audience then maybe I would get a
different set of answers. So I could compromise and do it so you can
either singly purchase the magazine or sign up for a year subscription.
Having it so they can just purchase the copy when they want means
they can pick up a copy that they may find interesting. To improve on
this question I may ask how often they would like a magazine to be
released for example every week, month or year this will mean I can
tailor my magazine to either things happening this week or this month.
12. Overall thoughts
Overall I feel that my pilot questionnaire was affective at finding out what younger people want so in my real
one I need to make sure I ask older people too, to get their perspective and feelings about a regional
women’s magazine
I discovered that people prefer pictures and less text to anything else this will help when doing my final
piece as I am able to make a double page spread that would be appealing for my target audience. I also
discovered that people go online more so possibly having an online copy of the magazine would be needed.
To improve on my questionnaire I need to maybe add more options allowing people to choose different
things. I also need to possibly ask questions about the ancillary tasks too and ask whether they like having
ads tailored to what the articles are about or even if they don’t want any ads on the page.
